Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani Jan 1992

Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent research suggests that physical fitness level may influence hearing sensitivity to noise (Ismail et al., 1973; Manson, Alessio, Huchinson, & Cristell, 1992). Frequency-specific changes in hearing acuity resulting from noise overexposure have been detected in human subjects using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) (Whitehead, Lonsbury-Martin, & Martin, 1992). A decrease in DPOAE amplitude was reported at frequencies at which behavioral thresholds were reduced following a noise exposure (Harris, 1990; Lonsbury-Martin & Martin, 1990; Martin, Probst, & Lonsbury-Martin, 1990). The purposes of this study were to: 1. Examine the relationship between physical fitness level and susceptibility to a temporary noise-induced …

A Survey Of Certain Food And Alcohol Related Behaviors And Selected Psychosocial Characteristics Of Adult Female Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse, Kristine Kay Ama

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to describe certain food and alcohol related behaviors and selected psychosocial characteristics of adult female survivors of child sexual abuse. Respondents answered items regarding eating behaviors, alcohol use, psychosocial characteristics, and demographic information. Results of this study are based on the responses to 45 surveys gathered from support groups located throughout Eastern Iowa.

The offenders with the highest reported percentages included in the survey were fathers, strangers, male cousins, stepfathers, brothers, and uncles. Sexual abuse was found to occur most often between the age ranges of 6-10 and 11-15.

The demographic information regarding relationship …

The Effects Of Ingested Carbonation On Oxygen Transport And Ventilation In Trained Distance Runners, Stacy Jean Ingraham Jan 1992

The Effects Of Ingested Carbonation On Oxygen Transport And Ventilation In Trained Distance Runners, Stacy Jean Ingraham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of consumption of carbonated beverages on maximal aerobic capacity, as measured by maximal oxygen consumption (VO2MAX), and respiratory physiology, as measured by ventilation frequency (f), ventilatory equivalent for oxygen and carbon dioxide (O2VE, co2VE), expired minute ventilation (VE), carbon dioxide output (VCO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and tidal volume (VT).

Thirteen male high school, collegiate and post collegiate distance runners from the local community performed two maximal treadmill tests exactly one week apart, following two different fluid ingestion treatments. The subjects were randomly assigned to a carbonated beverage or noncarbonated …

Anaerobic Power Gains Through Plyometrics: Comparison Of College Basketball Players Performing Drills At The Beginning Versus The End Of Practice, Benton Adam Miller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of plyometric training performed either before or after practice on selected power measurements for NCAA Division I male basketball players.

Sixteen subjects were split into two groups of eight players each. The groups were split up by a matched pairs method, based on preseason estimates of playing time for each player by the coaching staff. All subjects were pretested (Week 0) on four selected measures of power. Each subject was measured on vertical jump, with a no-step and a two-step approach, standing long jump, and the 30-yard (27.3 m) dash. …

A Review And Modification Of Wilson And Herrnstein's Integrated Theory Of Criminality As It Pertains To Serial Murder And Serial Rape, Karen Bower Mead Jan 1992

A Review And Modification Of Wilson And Herrnstein's Integrated Theory Of Criminality As It Pertains To Serial Murder And Serial Rape, Karen Bower Mead

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis presents a review and modification of Wilson and Herrnstein's integrated theory of criminality in an effort to explain serial murder and serial rape. The crimes of serial murder and serial rape are described as offenses which appear to be unprovoked and "senseless" and as well are predatory and repetitious in nature. The objective of this thesis is to further understand and explain the occurrence of these particular criminal offenses through the integration of existing theories of behavior.

Wilson and Herrnstein's theory is discussed and modified specifically to address the criminality exhibited by serial murderers and serial rapists. Their …

Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke Jan 1992

Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

After reviewing the criticism on Pulitzer Prize winning American author Annie Dillard's writing, I offer a close analysis of the imagery in these of Dillard's early works: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974), Holy the Firm (1977), and Teaching a Stone to Talk (1982). The analysis reveals how Dillard employs oppositions to expose the contradictions inherent in nature and, therefore, in God. Each of the three chapters covers one volume. In Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard's spiritual quest manifests itself in a study of nature. For Dillard, learning to see requires being prepared for visions of violence and horror as well …

North American Social Values In Costa Rican Corporate Advertising, Nuria Estrada Jan 1992

North American Social Values In Costa Rican Corporate Advertising, Nuria Estrada

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The objective of this study was to explore the possibility of using global advertising in the United States and Costa Rica. The researcher used content analysis to study words and images related to social values presented in 375 North American and 125 Costa Rican corporate advertisements during the decade 1980-1990. The social values found in these samples were classified according to the categories of the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). Specifically, the researcher used what Rokeach called terminal values which are more socially oriented than personal values. A Chi-square statistical test was used to determine if differences between North American and …

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann Jan 1992

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a response to Aldo Leopold's 1949 call for a new, wholistic environmental ethic. Leopold's call stemmed from his concern over the increasing degradation of the environment as a result of a utilitarian approach which judges nature as good only insofar as it is good for human economic and recreational benefit. This thesis is aimed at the development of a wholistic, non-utilitarian environmental ethic grounded in the philosophy. of Immanuel Kant. The thesis begins with a brief review of the utilitarian environmental ethic which Leopold opposed and some of the consequences it has wrought in the natural world. …

A Pretension Of Place: The Industrialization Of Corn Belt Agriculture, 1940-1965, Philip Jeffrey Nelson Jan 1992

A Pretension Of Place: The Industrialization Of Corn Belt Agriculture, 1940-1965, Philip Jeffrey Nelson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study concerns both the causes and effects of the industrialization of Corn Belt agriculture during and after World War II. Although industrialization is certainly a fully cultural phenomenon, with a multiplicity of competing and augmenting causal agents involved in its genesis, industrial processes are the most salient and identifiable bases of modern economies. In their application to the Corn Belt's agricultural structure, techniques of industrial farming revolutionized almost every aspect of the agricultural experience. Farm size, machinery, power sources, capitalization, supplies, and populations have all changed in response to an almost single-minded adherence and adoption of a mechanicalchemical based …

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley Jan 1991

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([3H] GA1, [3H] GA4) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [3H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (KD= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …

Earthworm Day, Kenneth W. Thompson, Deborah K. Thompson Jan 1991

Earthworm Day, Kenneth W. Thompson, Deborah K. Thompson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Using live animals in the elementary science classroom fosters enthusiasm and encourages curiosity. The earthworms discussed in this article, commonly called night crawlers, are easy to find in Iowa in moist garden soil or around lawns. Earthworms are often used as fishing bait and, because of this, are readily available at reasonable prices from commercial bait dealers or backyard entrepreneurs. Besides their availability and low cost, earthworms are relatively hardy and easily handled by elementary students. For these reasons, and because of the very important role earthworms play in the environment, they were selected to be the focus of the …

The Development Of A Concrete Interlocking Partition Walling Unit, Haldane L. Johnson Jan 1991

The Development Of A Concrete Interlocking Partition Walling Unit, Haldane L. Johnson

Graduate Student Work

This research aimed to develop a better method of erecting internal partition walls for the Jamaican housing industry. An interlocking concrete block wall unit was considered appropriate because it used local materials and required semi-skilled labor to erect.

A timber mold was made to manually produce the 4 x 4 x 8 inch block. The concrete mix used had a cement to aggregate ratio of 1:7.5 and a sand to gravel ratio of 1:2 and a water cement ratio of 0.753. The average compressive strength of the block determined after three days was 351.56 psi. This translates into an expected …

Free Will And Knowledge Before And After The Fall, David J. Tietge Jan 1991

Free Will And Knowledge Before And After The Fall, David J. Tietge

Draftings In

There are certain ambiguities that impede a definitive reading of Paradise Lost, and this seems to be accepted as an occupational hazard for most scholars and students who undertake the task of coming to an intelligible understanding of the poem. Many of these interpretive problems result from personal convictions, a love or hate of Milton, or a need to approach the work from specific critical perspectives. In Milton's attempt to clarify human and cosmological origins, he seems to have (out of necessity) made the reading such that it requires us to push our intellectual and philosophical capacities to the …

Prefatory Note, Theodore Hovet Jan 1991

Prefatory Note, Theodore Hovet

Draftings In

One of the most consequential results of the past twenty years of feminist theory and literary criticism has been the dismantling of traditional norms of what constitutes the self and individual identity. Carol Gilligan, Mary Field Belenky, and Elizabeth Abel - to name only the most widely read - have demonstrated that the American ideal of developing an individuated, authentic, and autonomous self does not rest on universal psychological and moral principles but is primarily a "fiction" created by masculine discourse.

The following critical essays focus on four of the most memorable individuals in American literature - Isabel Archer from …

Focus Area Two: Increasing Family Involvement In The Child's Development [Goodwin], Myrna J. Goodwin Jan 1991

Focus Area Two: Increasing Family Involvement In The Child's Development [Goodwin], Myrna J. Goodwin

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

A child's education begins with the family at the child's birth. Then during the hospital stay both child and mother are nurtured by the medical staff. Schools could begin their interest in the child's education if an educator visited the newborn's home to deliver ideas on learning in the home.

When the mother and child leave the hospital and arrive at their home, the environment (along with heredity factors) begins to shape the child's future. Physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs will be accommodated in varying degrees. If the baby's basic physical needs are met, that's good; but if the physical …
