Portfolio Assessment Of Writing In The Third Grade, Linda S. Trader Jan 1995

Portfolio Assessment Of Writing In The Third Grade, Linda S. Trader

Graduate Research Papers

The whole language instructional concept focuses on children creating meaning through the language processes. One of the many aspects of this instructional concept is the close relationship between instruction and assessment. In assessing children's involvement in the language processes, descriptive, or qualitative techniques, need to be used as a collaboration between the teacher and the individual child. From assessing their growth and instructional needs, children with the support of their teacher can set further goals for instruction. This process of setting goals, striving to reach them, assessing growth and instructional needs, and reestablishing goals is an ongoing process. Several assessment …

Family Reading And Emerging Literacy, Julie W. Mcclure Jan 1995

Family Reading And Emerging Literacy, Julie W. Mcclure

Graduate Research Papers

Family involvement with children's learning experiences has been thought to contribute to their success or failure in learning to read. There are many ways families can nurture children's literacy such as making printed materials available, reading aloud to children, providing writing materials, and responding to children's reading and writing activities {Teale & Sulzby, 1986). Such experiences not only foster children's literacy but also provide a bridge to their school involvement. Children who are not successful readers in school often have not been exposed to reading and writing at home (Heath, 1980). It is especially important then, that schools reach out …

In this project, the writer will extend play opportunities supported by literature experiences and related language activities.

Tillie’S Christmas: Exposition Of A Children’S Book, Jeanne Anderson Jan 1995

Tillie’S Christmas: Exposition Of A Children’S Book, Jeanne Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

TILLIE'S CHRISTMAS: EXPOSITION OF A CHILDREN'S BOOK, by Jeanne Anderson. In preparation for writing the children's book, Tillie's Christmas, this study explores the craft of writing in general, as well as the process of writing children's books in particular. Since the resulting book intentionally reflects Christmas traditions as celebrated by second-generation German immigrants on the Iowa prairie in 1900, this paper researches those customs. To confirm the commonality of such ethnic experiences on the Iowa prairie in 1900, several interviews with second-generation German immigrants are included in the study.

Pre-Instructional Student Conceptions Of Natural Selection And Evolution And Their Relationship To Cognitive Level, Terence John Coleman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between cognitive level and misconceptions regarding the concepts of natural selection and evolution in twenty-eight ninth grade students prior to instruction in tenth grade biology. In addition, the study examined the nature of student misconceptions. There were three major questions which guided the study: (a) What knowledge do ninth grade students possess regarding the concepts of natural selection and evolution prior to instruction in tenth grade? (b) What are the specific misconceptions that ninth grade students possess regarding the concepts of natural selection and evolution? (c) To …

Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads Jan 1995

Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study evaluated the improvement of indoor air quality and energy savings achieved, by an original solar ventilation system installed at test sites exhibiting elevated radon levels. Conventional residential energy conservation measures that limit air exchange rates between the indoors and outdoors have been shown to increase concentrations of radioactive radon decay products as well as other indoor air contaminants. Growing concern about radon lung cancer risks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and the "sick building syndrome" have increased demand for improved indoor air quality. Due to added heating and cooling loads, ventilation generally incurs substantial installation and operational costs. All commercially …

The points considered include (a) the needs of single parents and their families; (b) the attitudes of the single parents and their families towards church; (c) the attitudes of the church members toward single parents and their families; and (d) barriers that may influence single parents to be churched or unchurched. The study included the United Methodist Churches within the Waterloo District in the state of Iowa. The target population were single parents with children 18 years and younger …

Justifications Of Intentional Aggression In Sport, Joseph Kwame Mintah Jan 1995

Justifications Of Intentional Aggression In Sport, Joseph Kwame Mintah

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which athletes in selected contact and semi-contact sports commit intentional acts of violence during competition. A second purpose was to determine how athletes justify or rationalize the use of intentional violent behavior. The subjects (N = 85) for this study were all male athletes from one mid-western University (age 18-42): football athletes (n = 31), basketball athletes (n = 12), wrestling athletes (n = 14) and soccer athletes (n = 28). Subjects responded to a modified form of the Bredemeier Athletic Aggression Inventory (BAAGI) and a researcher generated questionnaire …

The study was double-blind and placebo controlled. Subjects ingested a capsule containing ephedrine HCl (75 mg/70 kg body weight) on one test date and alternately ingested a placebo capsule on the opposite test date. Subjects then sat quietly for 60 min while measurements of heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiographic response were taken at 20 min intervals. A sample of blood was taken from …

The Effects Of Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (Mtbe) On The Hexadecane Mineralization Potentials Of Microbial Consortia, Christopher Matthew Horan Jan 1995

The Effects Of Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (Mtbe) On The Hexadecane Mineralization Potentials Of Microbial Consortia, Christopher Matthew Horan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The environmental fate and biological effects of the fuel oxygenate methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is of concern because, among other factors, it is highly soluble (4.8g/100g H2 0) in water. Therefore, ground and surface water contamination may occur through accidental spills and leaks from underground storage tanks. Little is known about the biodegradability and ecotoxicity of MTBE. Continuous culture technique was used to enrich for MTBE degrading consortium or single species of microorganisms. Radiorespirometry was used to confirm that continuous culture enrichments would metabolize MTBE to carbon dioxide. Radiorespirometry was also used to measure the effects of MTBE on …

The Impact Of Follow-Up Discussion On Student Learning From Channel One, Gary Arthur Borlaug Jan 1995

The Impact Of Follow-Up Discussion On Student Learning From Channel One, Gary Arthur Borlaug

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Channel One, a news and features program delivered via satellite to over 40% of junior and senior high school students in the United States, has been the subject of persistent scrutiny regarding the educational value of its daily 10-minute presence in schools. Channel One’s curriculum includes three major components: (a) current events; (b) social issues such as drug abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, prejudice, and so on; and (c) commercial advertisements. Previous studies have been conducted to examine the impact of the current events and advertisement components but not of the social issues component.Studies designed to measure how much students learned …

Is The Error-Reaction Time Correlation In Category Verification Tasks Evidence Of Fuzzy Limits In Categories?, Sergio Chaigneau Jan 1995

Is The Error-Reaction Time Correlation In Category Verification Tasks Evidence Of Fuzzy Limits In Categories?, Sergio Chaigneau

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis attempts to review evidence supporting a positive error-reaction time correlation in category verification tasks. All reviewed models predict that categorization errors will increase when the time needed to make a membership judgement increases. This is explained either as a result of the structure of categories (e.g., as another manifestation of category fuzziness), or as a product of the category verification process (e.g., attributed in general memory models to the random nature of the retrieval process). Two specific models that attempt to explain the correlation were tested. One that assumes the correlation is the result of incomplete or inconsistent …

Influence Of Children's Prior Knowledge On Reading And Writing Poetry, Sharon A. Beach Jan 1995

Influence Of Children's Prior Knowledge On Reading And Writing Poetry, Sharon A. Beach

Graduate Research Papers

School programs that are based on literature across the curriculum are being implemented in many schools. In order for children to become literate, they need to engage in the reading process more than in reading class. Children's literary experiences can be extended in other curricular areas, such as the social studies and science. By doing so, children can naturally experience the contributions of the different genres of literature within the functions of language.

Archaeology: Puzzle Of The Past: An Exhibit Design, Kristine Eyheralde May 1994

Archaeology: Puzzle Of The Past: An Exhibit Design, Kristine Eyheralde

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Archaeology: Puzzle of the Past is a design for a museum exhibit to better explain archaeology to the public. Its purpose is to change the audience's perspective from one of object orientation to visualization of archaeology as a process. The exhibit utilizes a chronological and concrete approach to move the visitors through the major steps in the archaeological process -- including survey, excavation, labwork, and interpretation -- as they occur within the parameters of a fictitious archaeological site. In addition, interactive exercises are designed to be included within each area to reinforce the message.

Theoretical Concepts Of Evil In Counseling, James Kimsey Jan 1994

Theoretical Concepts Of Evil In Counseling, James Kimsey

Graduate Research Papers

Evil can harm an individual in many ways, including psychologically, and, therefore, may be a factor that needs to be addressed in counseling. Many human conditions or problems could be seen as either evil or caused by evil. This is important to children and to people who work for them. This paper is an investigation regarding the origins of evil. Three theoretical approaches based in psychology will be reviewed: Freudian, Behavioral, and Third Force. Implications for school counselors will be briefly treated.

Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni Jan 1994

Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Computers have become an integral part of the education system, and computer literacy is an important asset for any college student. Many students find that their exposure to computers at the high school level was not satisfactory. Thus they hesitate to enroll in computer enhanced mathematics or science courses at the college level. This paper discusses some of the avenues for secondary science instructors to incorporate computers into their current curriculum. It also examines computer use to enhance students' understanding of science and mathematical concepts.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Middle Schools: A Reflective Essay, Cody J. Vincent Jan 1994

A Preferred Vision For Administering Middle Schools: A Reflective Essay, Cody J. Vincent

Graduate Research Papers

Minnie Pearl, a traditional performer with the Grand Old Opry, summed up the purpose of this paper many years ago with part of her act. In it, she was cavorting with the audience about the special attributes her boss had in regards to leadership. It was quite amusing in that many of the things she joked about hit home in so many ways. The one thought she finshed [sic] with, however, seemed to sum up the entire routine and perhaps those problems associated with decision making and leadership itself, "His aim was high, but he had no ammunition."

Religious Minorities And The Establishment And Free Exercise Clauses, Steven J. Drahozal Jan 1994

Religious Minorities And The Establishment And Free Exercise Clauses, Steven J. Drahozal

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Nowhere is the battle over sacred and secular waged with such intensity and frequency as in the schools of this country. It is, therefore, entirely fitting that a discussion of issues in education include the separation of Church and State. The ever increasing number of decisions handed down by the Supreme Court attest to the fact that the legal issues of separation of Church and State are multiple and complex. When dealing with these issues in a short paper, we must be clear on the issues being discussed. This paper shall focus on two main issues: the fact that "separation …

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom Jan 1994

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom

Iowa Journal of Communication

The search for self-actualization that once drew Henry David Thoreau to the woods of Walden now prompts thousands of men to pack up emotional baggage for a weekend's commune with other men in the great outdoors. As participants in the so-called "men's movement" of the 1990s, their object is to "know deeply who you are as a man. Realize you are not alone" (Stanton 116). The men's movement is more accurately a coagulation of equal rights activism, consciousness-raising, academic men's studies, and mythopoetic "Wild Man" ritualism. The trends share a groping toward self-understanding, as well as recognition of the need …

A Personal Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Bonnie Lenz Jan 1994

A Personal Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Bonnie Lenz

Graduate Research Papers

To develop a vision for administration of the elementary school, one must first articulate one's vision for the school itself. In considering the role I might take as a principal, I must begin by questioning the school's purpose, structure and direction. Sergiovanni (1992) advanced the view that schools exist for a purpose, and leadership behaviors or organizational structures that do not enhance that purpose are ineffective and meaningless. Our purpose is to educate students. Does the school's structure support and its leadership point in the direction of offering the best possible education to all children?

Public Education And Shared Values, Darryl D. Hansen Jan 1994

Public Education And Shared Values, Darryl D. Hansen

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In our society, parents are primarily responsible for teaching morality to their children. Parents may delegate certain teaching roles to religious or public institutions, but they cannot escape the responsibility for the outcome of that teaching. Our public institutions must look to the family for the authority to teach morality and the content of that morality. Unfortunately, the prevailing idea in education is relativism. There are no universal moral values we can all agree upon, so we don't teach any.
