Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Iowa fens are small, mineorotrophic peatlands maintained by shallow groundwater. Eighteen fen sites located across northern Iowa were mapped and radiocarbon dated to assess the timing of initial peat accumulation. The radiocarbon ages span the Holocene, ranging from 1,240 to 10,900 B.P.; however most fens postdate 5,000 yr B.P. The dominance of late-Holocene ages suggests that Holocene climatic change may have strongly influenced the record of peat accumulation. During the mid-Holocene Iowa was warmer and drier than at present, and peat was degraded or accumulated slowly in fens. The range of ages also implies that the commencement and subsequent rate …

Ecoregions And Subregions Of Iowa: A Framework For Water Quality Assessment And Management, Glenn E. Griffith, James M. Omernik, Thomas F. Wilton, Suzanne M. Pierson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Ecoregion frameworks are valuable tools for inventorying and assessing environmental resources, for setting resource management goals, and for developing biological criteria and water quality standards. In a collaborative project between the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we have refined boundaries of the EPA's five ecological regions of Iowa and defined six subregions of the Western Corn Belt Plains ecoregion within the state. Lists of candidate stream reference sites have been developed to date for the seven largest regions, and the sites were visited and evaluated by Iowa DNR and U.S. EPA personnel …

Post-Natal Survival Of Raccoons In Relation To Female Age And Denning Behavior, Jonathan J. Judson, William R. Clark, Ronald D. Andrews
Post-Natal Survival Of Raccoons In Relation To Female Age And Denning Behavior, Jonathan J. Judson, William R. Clark, Ronald D. Andrews
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
We measured post-natal survival of radio-collared raccoons 1-5 months old in southwest Iowa, 1988-1989. We compared survival of young nurtured by yearling and adult females and related den site selection to survival functions using proportional hazards models. Adult females used upland and farmstead habitats note frequently than yearlings, whereas yearling females used lowland habitats note frequently. Tree cavities and beds on the ground were used most frequently. Adult females denned in buildings 13% of the time and in holes in the ground 9.5% of the time, whereas yearlings frequently tested with litters in beds on the ground (31%). Microhab1tat characteristics …

Evaluation Of Implanted Radio Transmitters In Pheasant Chicks, Dean E. Ewing, William R. Clark, Paul A. Vohls
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
We studied game-farm pheasant (Phasianus colchicus Linneaus) chicks implanted with miniature transmitters to determine if surgery and implantation affected growth, behavior, or survival. Transmitters (weighing 1.2 g) were implanted subcutaneously in the interscapular region in day-old chicks. In Experiment 1, biological effects on chicks with transmitters implanted were compared with data from a control group. In Experiment 2, the effects of anesthesia only, anesthesia with an implanted transmitter, and implanted transmitter only were compared with a control. We measured responses of weight gain, survival, and pecking behavior in each experiment. In Experiment 1, we found no significant differences in weight …

Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann

Because verbalization is our primary mode of communication we are more adept at manipulating and more facile in saying what we want to say and refraining from saying what we don't want to say than through other communicative modes. Art is a less customary communicative vehicle for most people and therefore less amenable to control. Unexpected things may burst forth in a 1 picture ••• sometimes totally contrary to the intentions of its creator. This is one of the most exciting potentialities in art therapy. Unexpected recognitions often form the leading edge of insight, learning, and growth. (Cook, 1991, p. …
The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber
The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber
Graduate Research Papers
Humans have relied on their five senses--sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell--for purposes of communication within their environment. The most crucial of all the senses is that of touch. Touch is a basic human need and is the first form of communication humans experience (Jones, 1994). According to Colton (1983), touching is necessary throughout the lifespan. As humans mature, their reaching and touching needs change. Infants and 1 children progress from relying on their parents to being more independent and self-sufficient. The process of maturation is an important component to personal growth and development and manifests different touch needs. Buscaglia …

Candidate stories for this project were reviewed through the application of several sets of filtering criteria developed by the author and based on tests described in the literature, to determine which stories would be used. The accompanying document includes nine stories from six continents, as rewritten by the project author. With each mythological flood story is a short narrative describing the background of the story, its cultural roots, or anything else that would bring life and interest to the retelling. This anthology will …
Commons Components Of Literature-Based Reading Programs, Lola M. Willrich
Commons Components Of Literature-Based Reading Programs, Lola M. Willrich
Graduate Research Papers
Literature-based reading instruction is replacing traditional basal programs in many classrooms. This instructional concept focuses on providing quality literature from the different genres to develop a print-rich environment in which children can find meaningful reading experiences. These literature experiences provide structures, or whole units, in which readers can create their own meaning. In such a print-rich environment, readers can be energized to extend the reading experience by engaging in related expressive action, a connection between the comprehension and composition processes, and by interacting with others concerning the ideas and feelings generated in the reading process. These experiences can lead to …

Silky Ears And Secret Letters, Denise Larae Kuethe-Strudthoff
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this graduate project was for the writer to finish Silky Ears and Secret Letters, a chapter book for readers in grades three through seven. The main character in the story is Marcie Hargate, a sixth grader who does not fit in with her peers and who endures her classmates' taunting. Marcie's only friend is her basset hound, Rutherford. Rutherford is Marcie's confidante; and when she starts to receive letters signed by "Ghost Girl," the basset hound is the first to know. The letters from Ghost Girl worry Marcie because Ghost Girl often suggests in her letters that …
Aspects Of Cultural Literacy In Elementary Reading/Literature Textbooks, Linda Neilsen
Aspects Of Cultural Literacy In Elementary Reading/Literature Textbooks, Linda Neilsen
Graduate Research Papers
In his 1987 book, Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to know E. D. Hirsch, Jr. contended that current elementary textbooks contain very little of the traditional literature which students need to know. For this research, nine elementary reading/literature textbook series were analyzed for their use of seven types of traditional literature: fable, fairy tale, folktale, legend, myth, nursery rhyme, and tall tale. It was found that less than ten percent of the reading selections in the selected textbook series would fit the criteria to be considered traditional literature entries. Furthermore, it was found that, in the selected series, textbooks …

Planning A School Technology In-Service For Kindergarten Through Secondary School Teachers, Ancillary Staff, And Administrators, Joan R. Hammelman
Graduate Research Papers
The increasing demand for technological literacy in our global economy affects all areas of schools. The principle of technological literacy, or more specifically, technological knowledge and skills, permeates every aspect of school systems. It crosses all administrative lines, enters office and classroom settings, affects quality of educational delivery, and can help raise the potential level of life-skills for both educational professionals and students to incomprehensible new heights (Presley & Freitas, 1990). This project will deal with raising the level of technological literacy for educational professionals which should eventually result in increased levels of technological literacy of the students.
Nonverbal Communication In The Work Place As Perceived By Men And Women, Judith Lou Loonan
Nonverbal Communication In The Work Place As Perceived By Men And Women, Judith Lou Loonan
Graduate Research Papers
In order to understand the issue of nonverbal communication in the workplace as perceived by men and women, the work history of men and women and how they arrived at the present point of communication must be looked at. It must also be established what the meaning of nonverbal communication is. This research will provide a guide to establish these two points. After World War II, and especially within the past 20 years, more and more women have entered the work force. "It is estimated that by the year 2000, the percentage of women will grow to 50% of the …

The Effect Of Booktalking On Fiction Circulation Statistics, Melinda J. Quinn
Graduate Research Papers
Five monthly booktalk programs were presented to the eighth grade reading classes at BGM School. Circulation statistics for first semester of 1992 when these students were in seventh grade were compared to the circulation statistics for the same semester of their eighth grade year in 1993 to determine if the booktalks made a significant difference in this group's reading habits.
An analysis of the data using the chi-square test indicated no significant difference at the .05 level in the circulation statistics for paperback books, hard bound books or total volumes. It seemed, though, that the students reacted positively to the …

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two organizational strategies (outlining and mapping) in sixth grade social studies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine if the effectiveness of these strategies was dependent upon student learning preference; sequential or global. The effectiveness of the two organizational strategies was determined by comparing differences in group mean scores, using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA repeated over one factor (organizational strategy used). The study was replicated a second time. Students were asked to read and study information on the Canadian province, Nova Scotia, using the strategy: outlining and mapping, …

Voices Unspoken And Unheard, Daniel Joseph Holman
Voices Unspoken And Unheard, Daniel Joseph Holman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Art critic Donald Kuspit proposes for the future an art which is symbolic spiritual art, a communicative extension of silent painting, it must dramatize (respiritualize, revitalize) the forms it uses to make them spiritually convincing. It does this by fusing their eternal character with a worldly content that is shown to have mystical import, inner meaning. This interaction and reconciliation generates spiritual atmosphere. (Kuspit 319)
His proposal describes the direction of my work in the series of prints, Voices Unspoken and Unheard, images of a society dehumanized through pain and isolation. The stimulus for making this work originates in what …
A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk
A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The problem to be studied for this thesis was that of whether the usual statement calculus is a suitable formal system for every many-valued logic in a particular collection of logics. The logics in question are those that fall between the usual two-valued logic and a modified form of the Lukasiewicz-Tarski three-valued logic.
Since this betweenness relationship was an original concept and appeared nowhere in the literature, the first goal in the research plan was to define this relationship precisely. Preliminary concepts included truth value mapping and forgivingness of logics, concepts that, like betweenness, are original to this paper and …
