Impact Of Television And Video Programs On Math Learning, Xin Wang
Impact Of Television And Video Programs On Math Learning, Xin Wang
Graduate Research Papers
The primary purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to present a review of the literature of video animation and study its role in math education; and (2) to conduct a preliminary study of a new video animation math program. The study is motivated largely by a rampant fear of math in American schools and the need to reduce this fear by integrating technology in the teaching of math. The study addresses the following questions: (1) could television and video help to improve elementary students' ability to understand and increase their interest in learning math? (2) is there a way …
Lessons From Intelligence: Integrating Psychometric, Triarchic, And Mi Theories, Larry F. Herzog
Lessons From Intelligence: Integrating Psychometric, Triarchic, And Mi Theories, Larry F. Herzog
Graduate Research Papers
As intelligence theory evolves, educators integrate new approaches with educational practice. In this review, the history of intelligence theory is probed. Implications of traditional psychometric theory, the triarchic theory of Robert Sternberg, and the multiple intelligences theory of Howard Gardner are cited. Utilizing the published literature and personal observation, the author concludes that future educators will have the benefit of a broader viewpoint of the construct of intelligence than is presently the case.

Knowing And Programming With Style, Debra J. Jordan, Sherril L. York
Knowing And Programming With Style, Debra J. Jordan, Sherril L. York
National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs
In a world where youth programs compete for participants administrators and programmers constantly strive for new and creative programming ideas as well as new ways of offering traditional programs. The state of the art in youth programming demands that youth service workers be in tune with the people who are being served, and not merely the programs which are being provided. This includes understanding differences - cultural, regional, personal, etc.
Program administrators and leaders need to recognize that everyone has differences which are neither good nor bad - they are simply different. Too often value and worth are attributed to …

Iowa Waste Reduction Center Book Gallery
Pollution prevention can be defined as: "The use of materials, processes, or practices that reduces or eliminates the creation of pollutants or wastes at the source.” (EPA) Pollution prevention represents a shift away from the old school of thought, “pollution control,” in which waste was not dealt with until after it was generated. Through pollution prevention, we look at the processes that generate the waste to see if we can avoid creating a waste in the first place, or at least reduce the hazardous nature of the waste. When this is not possible, the next best solution to prevent wastes …
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Populations derived from crosses of elite genotypes are commonly used in plant breeding programs. Knowledge of the genetic variation among individuals and their progenies within F2 populations is essential for effective selection of important traits. The genetic variation and number of effective factors affecting the expression of quantitative traits within 30 F2 maize (Zea mays L.) populations were determined by different methods suggested for study of F2 populations. Estimates of heritability and number of effective factors varied among F2 populations for each trait, primarily because of the differences in trait expression between parents of crosses and the environmental effects upon …

Maria Lactans And Some Visual Predecessors In Egypt, The Ancient Near East And Greece, M. C. Ewald
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Several semesters ago I participated in a class on the art and archaeology of ancient Egypt. As an art history course it, focused on the images now available from that magnificent civilization. These images conveyed not only the incredible pomp and splendor afforded state religion and ceremony, but also whispered of the sweet joy abundant in private life as well. Flipping through my textbook early on in the semester, my attention was captured by an extraordinary example encompassing both "types" of images. The subject of my fascinated gaze was a statue of a child-pharaoh, Pepy II, seated on his mother's …
The Effects Of Gender Bias On Instructional Computing, Mei-Lin Chen
The Effects Of Gender Bias On Instructional Computing, Mei-Lin Chen
Graduate Research Papers
Technology has brought great empowerment and influence to the human environment throughout modern history. Computers are appearing to play an important role in our society in a variety of functions (Bannon and Marshall, 1988). Many activities in our daily lives such as shopping and banking have been dramatically affected by computer usage (Arenz and Lee,1989; Henry, 1993).
Extending The Science Curriculum Through Children's Literature, Barbara L. Kranz
Extending The Science Curriculum Through Children's Literature, Barbara L. Kranz
Graduate Research Papers
Adolescents have an inherent curiosity about science. Therefore, the role of the teacher is to capitalize on this intellectual trait through developmentally appropriate activities and projects and then relate that learning to the real world. Some students, though, are being turned away from science topics when they are placed in content area textbooks and their scientific aptitude is judged by their ability to comprehend the text. The reading level of these texts may be too difficult for many of the students (Kantor, Anderson, & Armbruster, 1983). Content textbooks break concepts into formal clusters of information that do not encourage reader …
How Computers Should Be Used In Early Childhood Programs, Deborah S. Mcquigg
How Computers Should Be Used In Early Childhood Programs, Deborah S. Mcquigg
Graduate Research Papers
This review was done to determine how computers should be used in early childhood programs. Chapter I focuses on the introduction to the review. Chapter II is a review of the literature. It describes the positive and negative effects of computer use in early childhood programs. Positive effects are increased motivation, positive attitude, and academic achievement. Computers provide collaborative experiences with peers, and help develop social interaction. Computers encourage creativity, exploration, and experimentation. Negative effects are that computers are abstract, and children are not, and young children lack the requisite skills. There is a lack of quality software. Children find …
Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion
Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion
Graduate Research Papers
Chapter I was implemented in 1965 as a federally funded supplemental program to assist disadvantaged children in becoming better readers. Since that time changes have occurred in reading instruction and assessment. Traditionally, instruction focused on phonics to decode and question and answer tests to assess comprehension. Today, teachers stress phonics less and use authentic assessments to evaluate comprehension. This study sought to determine if retellings would improve comprehension of expository text following instruction in the conventions of expository text. Five, third grade, Chapter I students (four girls and one boy) rendered a pre-instruction retelling, followed by instruction in the conventions …
Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy
Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy
Graduate Research Papers
Acts of student violence in the schools are increasing (Chance, 1990; Crosby, 1993; Rich, 1992; Urben, 1986), especially in the larger cities in the United States (Hellman & Beaton, 1986). These acts of violence include violence toward other students as well as toward the school personnel and property. In this paper I will discuss selected aspects of violence in the schools. More specifically, I discuss the prevalence of violence in the schools, school based interventions and implications for the practice of school psychologists.
Enhancing The Language Arts Program In Grade Six Through Picture Book Experiences, Carrie R. Mayer
Enhancing The Language Arts Program In Grade Six Through Picture Book Experiences, Carrie R. Mayer
Graduate Research Papers
Educators need to facilitate the reading and writing connection to expand their students' capacity to express themselves in written form. The connections made between the comprehension-composition processes enhance children's emerging literacy (Atwell, 1987; Calkins, 1983; Calkins, 1991; Graves, 1990; Hansen, 1987; Murray, 1986; Rosenblatt, 1978). Calkins believes that reading and writing are inseparable. Moss (1977) relates that opportunities to read quality literature can influence children's writing abilities.
Learning Centers To Facilitate A Multi-Age, Heterogeneous-Grouped Classroom, Kimberly Kvigne
Learning Centers To Facilitate A Multi-Age, Heterogeneous-Grouped Classroom, Kimberly Kvigne
Graduate Research Papers
Grouping by grade levels in school can facilitate subject matter and skill-driven curriculum centered on textbooks. Child centered programs focus on nurturing the potential of each child (Anderson, 1987). If schools are to offer all students equity and excellence, they must view all students as worthy and capable of learning. These three goals for educational programs can promote equity and excellence: (1) Students must be challenged to learn as much as they are capable of learning. (2) The personal-social development of students is an integral part of the program. Academic achievement must never be at the cost of personal development. …

At a workshop on whole language, attended recently by the writer, Andrea Butler, teacher, author and researcher, told of her recent research study of parent expectations. In the study, parents of very young children were given a survey to determine their expectations of their infants' language development. The parents' responses indicated that they all expected their children to learn to speak. Most of the parents believed their children would learn to read though many had reservations. Many of the parents hoped their children would learn to write but had concerns about this aspect of their children's development. This uncertainty associated …
Teaching, The Communication Discipline, And The Research Community, David Zarefsky
Teaching, The Communication Discipline, And The Research Community, David Zarefsky
Iowa Journal of Communication
Professor Antczak refers to the tension between teaching and research in the public research university. My experience is in a private research university. Private institutions face at least as serious a tension, and their experience might offer insight about how to make that tension productive rather than harmful. A private research university has the same commitments to advancing knowledge and insight, and to graduate education, as does the public university, but it also has a strong commitment to undergraduate education. It has to; often more than 50 percent of its budget is derived directly from undergraduate tuition. Since the cost …
Predictable Pattern Books With Beginning Readers In A Chapter 1 Classroom, Susan E. O'Brien
Predictable Pattern Books With Beginning Readers In A Chapter 1 Classroom, Susan E. O'Brien
Graduate Research Papers
In school reading programs, students need opportunities to engage in the language processes. They need experiences that are meaningful to them and ones in which they find success. Children can enhance their literacy with an abundance of quality literature experiences and exposure to a print rich literary environment (Meek, 1982). One means of supporting beginning readers in breaking the written language code is to provide opportunities in the instructional program to experience language patterns over and over, such as are found in predictable pattern books. These works provide a source of support for children while they are trying to make …
Retelling Experiences To Strengthen Comprehension Abilities In A Chapter I Reading Program, Judy R. Gorder
Retelling Experiences To Strengthen Comprehension Abilities In A Chapter I Reading Program, Judy R. Gorder
Graduate Research Papers
Language arts programs in the elementary school are moving toward holistic strategies. Goodman (1986) explains "Language is easily learned when it is whole, real and relevant, when it makes sense and is functional, when it is encountered in the context of its uses, when the learner chooses it" (p. 26). Retelling of stories, or whole units of meaning, used as a teaching strategy, is in keeping with the holistic approach to teaching the language arts.
