Intrapersonal Communication And Well-Being, James Abbott

Theses and Dissertations

This research explored the experience of self-talk (intrapersonal communication) among subjects of varying well-being, considering multiple characteristics of self-talk such as tone, content, timing, and subject awareness. The research questions were: (R1) How is intrapersonal communication used and experienced by those with higher and lower levels of self-assessed well-being? (R2) To what extent are subjects of varying well-being states aware of their intrapersonal communication?

Twenty semi-structured personal interviews were conducted with individuals of varying well-being and other characteristics such as age and occupation. The subjects ranged in age from approximately twenty-one to eighty. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and …

North Dakota K-12 Principals' Perceptions Of Arts Integration In Schools, Roger Allen Abbe

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to research integration of the arts into other areas of the curriculum as a teaching tool in North Dakota’s K-12 classrooms. Emphasis was placed on the perceptions of North Dakota’s K-12 principals relating to integration of the arts, the current state of arts programs in North Dakota’s K-12 schools, and principals’ perceived barriers to integration of the arts. Attention was also given to the degree to which teachers in North Dakota’s K-12 schools currently integrate the arts into lesson plans as a tool to enhance and reinforce learning in other areas of the curriculum. …

Changes In Student Wellness Behaviors After Enrollment In Health Advocacy Courses At Und, Shelby J. Kary May 2007

Changes In Student Wellness Behaviors After Enrollment In Health Advocacy Courses At Und, Shelby J. Kary

Theses and Dissertations

Peer/health advocacy programs are used in the college and university setting to promote health education for students. Carns, Carns, and Wright (1993) found 83% of colleges and universities used undergraduate students in peer education programs. According to Mellanby, Rees, and Tripp (2000), "Peer-led education may be more effective, resulting in greater positive changes in health behaviour, than adult-led interventions" (p. 543). In the spring of 2005, Dr. Alan Allery, Director of Student Health Services at the University of North Dakota (UND), envisioned implementing a peer advocacy program at UND. A review of peer/health advocacy programs at other universities revealed that …

Literature Review; Culturally Competent Care For Native Americans With Mental Illness, Pamela V. Merrifield

Theses and Dissertations

There is a great n eed f or cu 1t urally competent nurse practitioners within the health care system H . . · owever, the literature 1s lacking regarding the utilization of services or the health-seeking behaviors of Native Americans with mental illness. There is increased morbidity and mortality afflicting racial and ethnic populations. Poor health of these populations may be attributed to poverty, lack of health care access, and cultural competence of health care providers (Geiger, 2001 ). As diversity increases within the general population, health care providers have a greater responsibility to become culturally competent to provide better …

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman May 2007

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

Gathering information on North American bird populations calls for long-term monitoring programs covering extensive geographic region to provide basic information on distribution, habitat use and availability, abundance, and changes in abundance. Information regarding population size, distributions and trends is of critical importance to conservation planners, managers, and biologists concerned with widespread degradation of ecosystems, alteration and loss of habitats, and understanding the effective conservation of a species. In accordance with the recommended monitoring of bird populations, especially species of high conservation concern, I undertook a study of the long-billed curlew (Numenius americanus parvus; hereafter LBCU or curlew). The LBCU were …

Pain Recall In Primary Dysmenorrhea, Robyn A. Drach Mar 2007

Pain Recall In Primary Dysmenorrhea, Robyn A. Drach

Theses and Dissertations

A fundamental issue hindering research in the area of primary dysmenorrhea is the lack of a gold standard for the diagnosis and assessment of dysmenorrhea. The current study seeks to further the research in the area of memory for menstrual pain and proposes a method of assessment for dysmenorrhea. In addition, this study provides preliminary data for the development of a measure specific to dysmenorrhea. Women with painful menstruation and women with low pain during menstruation were assessed twice, during menstruation and two weeks later, using three different assessment instruments. Participants (N=43) ranged in age from 18 to 24. In …
