Mental Health And Online Learning - Systematic Review Dataset, Stephanie L. Moore Phd, George Veletsianos, Michael Barbour

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

While there has been a lot of debate over the impact of online and remote learning on mental health and well-being, there has been no systematic syntheses or reviews of the research on this particular issue. In this paper, we review the research on the relationship between mental health / well-being and online or remote learning. Our review shows that little scholarship existed prior to 2020 with most studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. We report four findings: (a) pandemic effects are not well-controlled for in most studies; (b) studies present a very mixed picture, with variability around how mental …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite, is a major cause of waterborne infection, worldwide. While the trophozoite form of this parasite induces pathological symptoms in the gut, the cyst form transmits the infection. Since Giardia is a noninvasive parasite, the actual mechanism by which it causes disease remains elusive. We have previously reported that Giardia assembles cholesterol and GM1 glycosphingolipid-enriched lipid rafts (LRs) that participate in encystation and cyst production. To further delineate the role of LRs in pathogenesis, we isolated LRs from Giardia and subjected them to proteomic analysis. Various cellular proteins including potential virulence factors-e.g., giardins, variant surface …

Integrins As Therapeutic Targets For Sars-Cov-2, Timothy E. Gressett, Danielle Nader, Juan Pablo Robles, Tione Buranda, Steven W. Kerrigan, Gregory Bix

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus of the genus Betacoronavirus. Its genome is composed of four structural proteins known as spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N), of which E, M, and N are integrated into the viral envelope. The S glycoprotein, which protrudes from the surface of mature virions as a spike, is essential for virus attachment, fusion, and entry into the host cell. While the relationship between the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and the angiotensin- converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor has been readily established, the S1 subunit also …

The Giant Axon Of The Squid: A Simple System For Axonal Transport Studies, Joseph A. Degiorgis, Marcus Jang, Elaine L. Bearer

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The squid giant axon has a long history of being a superb experimental system in which to investigate a wide range of questions concerning intracellular transport. In this protocol we describe the method used for dissecting the axon to preserve its viability in vitro, and the technique for injecting exogenous materials into the living axon. Now that the squid genome is emerging, and the CRISPR/cas9 system has been successfully applied to knock-out squid genes, the giant axon will resume its place in the scientific pantheon of powerful experimental systems in which to address biological questions pertaining to all eukaryotes.

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after trauma, but contributory factors are incompletely understood. Increases in plasma von Willebrand Factor (vWF) with concurrent decreases in ADAMTS13 are associated with renal microvascular thrombosis in other disease states, but similar findings have not been shown in trauma. We hypothesized that molecular changes in circulating vWF and ADAMTS13 promote AKI following traumatic injury. VWF antigen, vWF multimer composition and ADAMTS13 levels were compared in plasma samples from 16 trauma patients with and without trauma-induced AKI, obtained from the Prehospital Air Medical Plasma (PAMPer) biorepository. Renal histopathology and function, vWF and ADAMTS13 levels were …

Oblivion: Autopsy Findings Of A 31-Year-Old Man With Sudden Cardiac Arrest, A Case Report Of A Sequalae Of Kawasaki Disease, Maria Eugenia Zuluaga Ruiz, Desiree Ann Marshall, Daniel Fernando Gallego

Pathology Research and Scholarship

A 31-year-old man presented to the hospital after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Despite optimal therapy, the patient passed away. His medical history included febrile rash at age 2. At autopsy, there was aneurysmal dilation and severe coronary artery stenosis by atherosclerotic plaques and myocardial fibrosis. These findings were presumed to be due to complications of Kawasaki disease, given the remote history of severe febrile rash as a toddler and the presence of chronic coronary artery injury, recanalization, and thrombosis with ischemic heart disease leading to sudden cardiac collapse and death.

Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma With Wwtr1-Camta1 Fusion In The Parotid Gland Presenting As Bell's Palsy, Landon J. Kunzelman, Shweta Agarwal, Nathan Boyd, Cory J Broehm

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare tumor of endothelial differentiation most commonly arising in soft tissue, liver, and lung, following a variable clinical course. Most cases are characterized by a t(1;3)(p36;q23-25) resulting in WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion. Only five epithelioid hemangioendothelioma have been previously reported arising in the salivary glands. None have presented as Bell's palsy. In the current case, a 37-year-old female presented with a longstanding complaint of pain and fullness in the right preauricular region and progressive episodes of Bell's palsy and facial nerve weakness. Surgical resection showed a tumor comprised of atypical cells with occasional intracytoplasmic vacuoles in a fibromyxoid …

CONTEXT.—: Pathology studies using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have focused on neoplasms, while studies in inflammatory pathology are rare. We previously demonstrated a CNN that differentiates reactive gastropathy, Helicobacter pylori gastritis (HPG), and normal gastric mucosa.

OBJECTIVE.—: To determine whether a CNN can differentiate the following 2 gastric inflammatory patterns: autoimmune gastritis (AG) and HPG.

DESIGN.—: Gold standard diagnoses were blindly established by 2 gastrointestinal (GI) pathologists. One hundred eighty-seven cases were scanned for analysis by HALO-AI. All levels and tissue fragments per slide were included for analysis. The cases were randomized, 112 (60%; 60 HPG, 52 AG) in the …

Cultural Identity Central To Native American Persistence In Science., Nizhoni Chow-Garcia, Naomi Lee, Vanessa Svihla, Claira Sohn, Scott Willie, Maija Holsti, Angela Wandinger-Ness

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Native Americans are the least represented population in science fields. In recent years, undergraduate and graduate level summer research programs that aimed to increase the number of Native Americans in science have made some progress. As new programs are designed, key characteristics that address science self-efficacy and science identity and provide supports for Native American students' commitment to a scientific career should be considered. In this study, we used sequential mixed methods to investigate the potential of culturally tailored internship programs on Native American persistence in science. We analyzed surveys (n = 47) and interviews (n = 4) …

Magnetic Microscopy And Search For Exotic Interaction Detection With Color Centers In Diamond, Nathaniel Ristoff

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers have been used extensively for the measurement of magnetic fields in applications of geology, biology, medicine, and fundamental physics. In regard to fundamental physics, NV centers offer a unique opportunity to test potential velocity dependant spin-spin interactions as well as velocity-spin interactions at the micron scale. In regards to magnetic materials, NV centers offer a platform to investigate magnetic properties of nanoparticles in an individual, but highly parallelized measurement. In this work, an experiment is proposed to measure a potential fundamental interaction between spins, mediated by an integer spin boson. These velocity dependent interactions will couple …

From Logic To Realism To Brighter Future For Humanity, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This collection of published papers at International Journal of Neutrosophic Science actually began with just a simple request by Dr. Broumi Said, the editor of IJNS, to us, to submit an article for his new journal. Then we submitted a series of new articles discussing various applications of Neutrosophic Logic, a new kind of logic as developed by one of us (FS). We explore a wide range of subject, from Godel’s incompleteness theorem, to possible technocalypse and neutro-futurology, and also additional sections. Hopefully you will find these articles interesting for better understanding of nature.

Linguistic Graphs And Their Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2022

Linguistic Graphs And Their Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The authors define the notion of directed linguistic graphs and linguistic-weighted graphs.

The second chapter discusses all types of linguistic graphs, linguistic dyads, linguistic triads, linguistic wheels, complete linguistic graphs, connected linguistic graphs, disconnected linguistic graphs, and linguistic components of the graphs. Further we define the notion of linguistic subgraphs of a linguistic graph. The third chapter also introduces the notion of Linguistic Cognitive Maps (LCMs) analogous to Fuzzy Cognitive maps (FCMs). We also propose Linguistic relational Maps, which are analogous to Fuzzy Relational Maps. These models find applications in problems whose data is unsupervised, but the values are linguistic.

Linguistic Geometry And Its Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2022

Linguistic Geometry And Its Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The authors venture to define the notion of linguistic geometry in this book.

It is pertinent to keep on the record that linguistic geometry differs from the classical geometry.

Many fundamental concepts and notions of classical geometry are not valid or extendable in the case of linguistic geometry.

We discuss in dept the linguistic variables, graphs and geometry essential for social information networks.

And then develop the new notion of linguistic geometry and its related properties.

The concept of linguistic social information geometric networks is also developed.
