Pathology Research and Scholarship
Developments in genomics are profoundly influencing medical practice. With increasing use of genetic and genomic testing across every aspect of the health care continuum, patients and their families are increasingly turning to primary care physicians (PCPs) for discussion and advice regarding tests, implications, and results. Yet, with the rapid growth of information, technology, and applications, PCPs are finding it challenging to fill the gaps in knowledge and support the growing needs of their patients. A critical component in expanding PCP genomic literacy lies in the education of physicians in training and in practice. Although a framework for developing physician competencies …
An Empirical And Theoretical Analysis Of Leadership In Two Egalitarian Horticultural Societies, Edmond Seabright
An Empirical And Theoretical Analysis Of Leadership In Two Egalitarian Horticultural Societies, Edmond Seabright
Anthropology ETDs
Leadership is a central subject of interest in anthropology and the evolutionary social sciences more generally because of its ubiquity in human societies as well as its role in the evolution of cooperation, social complexity, and social hierarchy. Explaining the variation in the form and functions of leadership across different societies and settings remains a major challenge for social scientists. Although it is often associated with social hierarchy, here I argue that leadership can and does evolve even in egalitarian settings where leaders cannot hope to fully make up the burdens and expenses associated with their service. I further show …

Does Proactivity Drive Use? Understanding Growth In Chat Reference Services, David A. Hurley, Adrienne Warner
Does Proactivity Drive Use? Understanding Growth In Chat Reference Services, David A. Hurley, Adrienne Warner
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Libraries that implement trigger-initiated proactive chat reference services see substantial increases in the number and complexity of reference transactions. However, it is not clear if this growth is a result of something inherent to proactivity, or other factors such as increased awareness of the service. To investigate this, we compare usage during periods with and without proactivity in databases in which our chat reference service is established. Steep and immediate increases when proactivity is enabled and sharp declines when it is disabled suggests that proactivity itself is driving the changes. We recommend human computer interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX) …

Keeping Your Cool: Thermoregulatory Performance And Plasticity In Desert Cricetid Rodents, Richard W. Ramirez, Eric A. Riddell, Steven R. Beissinger, Blair O. Wolf
Biology ETDs
Small mammals in hot deserts often avoid heat via nocturnality and fossoriality and are thought to have a limited capacity to dissipate heat using evaporative cooling. Research to date has focused on thermoregulatory responses to air temperatures (Ta) below body temperature (Tb). Consequently, the thermoregulatory performance of small mammals exposed to high air temperatures is poorly understood, particularly responses across geographic and seasonal scales. We quantified the seasonal thermoregulatory performance of four cricetid rodents (Neotoma albigula, N. lepida, Peromyscus eremicus, P. crinitus) exposed to high Ta, at four sites …

Pushing At The Seams: French Zines & Bricolage As A Liberatory Act, Shayna M. Davidson
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis examines the contemporary literary value posed by independently produced French fanzines. French fanzines represent a convergence of textual and graphic narratives, echoing la bande dessinée in many senses. I argue that the liberty of form and expression utilized by the fanzine creator permits a more nuanced iteration of life-writing. The circulation of texts amongst informal economies based in social networks suggests that creators are able to explore narratives of self-hood that do not conform to neoliberal market-oriented categories of identity. Furthermore, the influx of digitally stored and distributed French fanzines confounds their traditional categorization as ephemeral text-objects; as …

Lived Experiences Of Parents With Transgender And Gender Expansive Children, Mary Kathryn Brammer
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Parents of transgender and gender expansive (TGE) children can be recognized as a marginalized community often not represented or visible in the context of Westernized society. They experience significant challenges that impact their job as primary caregivers and burden their ability to raise healthy and happy TGE people. This research, guided by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis methodology and Queer theory, aimed to discern parents of TGE children’s subjective and collective experience raising a TGE child in New Mexico, understand how they experience a support group each participant has attended at least one time, and recognize the significance of these experiences for …

"When The Tide Is Out, The Table Is Set": Shellfish Harvesting Throughout The Holocene At Labouchere Bay, Southeast Alaska, Mark R. Williams
Anthropology ETDs
“When the tide is out, the table is set” is a familiar saying among Native communities on the Northwest Coast of North America. This phrase encapsulates traditional ecological knowledge passed down for generations concerning intertidal marine resources. Recent archaeological excavations of shellfish gathering camps at Labouchere Bay confirm that ancient people may have followed similar principles throughout the Holocene (c.9,500 -2,500 years ago). For millennia, shellfish have been a highly reliable food source that helped support sedentary fisher-hunter-gatherer settlements. Although shellfish habitats represent highly predictable foraging opportunities, optimal foraging strategies must be carefully managed to avoid overharvesting. Collecting just enough …
Brazil's Orthodox Church Rising: Living Authentic Tradition In Brazil's Middle Class, Anastasia M. Theodoropoulos
Brazil's Orthodox Church Rising: Living Authentic Tradition In Brazil's Middle Class, Anastasia M. Theodoropoulos
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation examines middle-class religiosity in Brazil through an analysis of the birth of a new religious organization, the Brazilian Orthodox Church. I investigate how the performance of “authentic tradition” (tradição verdadeira) orients and authenticates new middle-class subjectivities. In considering the unprecedented recent boom of middle classes worldwide, I explore how and why members of the growing Brazilian middle class, whose livelihoods are increasingly oriented around international finance capital and foreign corporate marketing, locate sources of the authentic beyond given, national boundaries. Through participant observation and interviews with middle-class congregants, I analyze how aligning with the “authentic tradition” …

Land Rich, Cash Poor: Hispanic Subsistence Agri-Culture On Acequia Farms Of Northern New Mexico, 1880-1950s, José A. Rivera Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
Acequia-based agriculture in Hispanic northern New Mexico originated with the arrival of settlers from the central valley of Mexico in the late sixteenth century and later following the Camino Real into the upper Río Grande and its tributaries. The high desert environment required irrigation for food production and survival. Land parcels in the rural villages of northern New Mexico were small, and crop yields were limited to home consumption on a subsistence basis, an economy that lasted well into the territorial period and statehood of New Mexico. Despite a wage economy introduced with the arrival of the railroad around 1880 …
Multicarrier Modulation Using Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Amir Raeisi Nafchi
Multicarrier Modulation Using Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Amir Raeisi Nafchi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The focus of the research was to investigate the application of the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFRFT) in communication systems. We investigated the compactness of the Gauss-Hermite like eigenvectors of the DFRFT and showed how a multi-carrier modulation system could benefit from it. This led to identifying an affine DFRFT. We proved the circular convolution property for the proposed DFRFT. Using this affine transform, we were able to design an orthogonal frequency division multiplexer (OFDM) communication system. In the process of implementing the OFDM, we developed a method for fast computation of the DFRFT using the chirp-z transform. Using the …

Research regarding medical students’ trust and willingness to follow presented curriculum is currently lacking. The student-school trust dynamic may offer insight into the academic performance, study methods, and clinical confidence of future physicians. This may provide invaluable information to medical educators concerning students’ perception of best practices when creating and presenting material to optimize reception and engagement.
The initial phase included a survey to gauge student trust in the curriculum and institution related to board exam preparation. Analysis of responses prompted an exploration into the following themes: trust in institutional education vs. third-party resources, resolving discrepancies between these resources, and …

The COVID 19 Pandemic caused both disruption and innovation in medical schools. We highlight an innovative elective that occurred because of the pandemic. Students in training to become health professionals wanted to understand the new COVID Vaccines. Two faculty members, one from the School of Medicine and one from the Collage of Pharmacy, stated a weekly virtual elective seminar called COVAX Scholars to provide training on COVID 19 vaccines starting in November of 2020. Students quickly became involved in the leadership of this program and many extra-curricular activities evolved from this program.
Students researched and gave presentations on subjects of …

Background: Learning methods utilizing the active learning model greatly improve learning and retention of complex information. With the COVID-19 pandemic, medical schools had to transition to a remote teaching format. Remote learning can be just as effective as traditional learning but requires effort from institutions to address technical challenges and faces difficulties providing higher cognitive skill development. This study attempts to examine medical students’ understanding of foundational principles of active learning and their perceptions of how well active learning facilitates learning in a remote vs in-person format.
Methods: A survey was emailed to the UNM School of Medicine Class of …

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, 220,000 New Mexicans were diagnosed with diabetes in 2017 and diabetes was the 6th leading cause of death in the state. Overall, Santa Fe County fairs above average in terms of managing diabetes among its population. Diabetes-related deaths are lower in Santa Fe County compared to the state’s average with 16.9 and 26.0 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively. However, on closer inspection, certain sections of Santa Fe County are disproportionately underrepresented within these generally “positive” numbers. One such community is Agua Fria Village on the south side of the city of Santa …

Teaching during the COVID 19 (CV-19) era came with many difficulties mandating that instructors adjust to emergency remote learning. Early attempts at remote learning were soon replaced by evidence-based approaches to online learning to meet the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learners reeling under strained conditions. Due to the psychomotor-heavy content of physical therapy (PT) classes, a partial return to campus was allowed after 3 months although didactic content remained online. A full return to campus was permitted after a further 9 months enabling faculty to return to pre-CV-19 teaching strategies. However, the PT faculty reflected on lessons learned …

Power dynamics can have negative consequences within learning environments. For example, attendings who do not speak up when a harmful comment is made to a medical student can reduce trust in the learning environment and a sense of belonging for that student. Understanding and analyzing power can build skills for navigating such dynamics and decrease potential for unintended harm. This session will provide participants the opportunity to 1) reflect on power, including their position within hierarchies and the social identities they hold, and 2) recognize in which situations they may or may not be power holders, which can inform how …

Goals of the 2019 UNM SOM curriculum revision include reducing the students repeating Phase I for academic reasons to less than 5% and those delaying Step I to less than 10%. To address these, we introduced two interventions into Clinical Morphology (CM), the foundational anatomy course taken by first year UNM medical students. Interventions included competence-based heterogeneous (CBH) student group formation and reciprocal peer teaching (RPT). These interventions applied independently have been shown to elevate the lowest performing students without negatively impacting higher performing students (Donovan, 2018 & Pizzimenti, 2016). CM is designed around classroom and lab-based active learning sessions …

Nursing house supervisors oversee hospital operations during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, yet many feel disconnected from others in the nursing leadership team. These individuals work as the sole leader on duty, having limited interaction with the daytime leaders and often lack formal leadership development. This quantitative, quasi-experimental study explored the effects of implementing a formal educational and team building program on the perception of the supervisor’s leadership skills as well as collaboration with the leadership team. The Leadership Practices Inventory and the Collaborative Behavior Scale – Shortened were the two surveys administered to assess the effects of this program. …

Multiple Sclerosis is a long lasting disease where the immune system attacks parts of the nerves, which result in slowing down of signals from the brain to various parts of the body. It is hard to predict one’s journey with MS, but can decrease life expectancy up to 14 years. Symptoms vary from person to person and can include heat sensitivity, fatigue, pain, cognitive dysfunction, and tremors. Unfortunately we do not know the cause of MS however genetics, infectious agents like viruses, and environments with lower Vitamin D levels can be contributing factors (Files et al., 2015; Forwell et al., …
