The Heirs Of Malintzin: Gendered Hierarchies In The “Spiritual Conquest” Of Sinaloa, Latin American And Iberian Institute, Jason Dyck May 2022

The Heirs Of Malintzin: Gendered Hierarchies In The “Spiritual Conquest” Of Sinaloa, Latin American And Iberian Institute, Jason Dyck

LAII Events

After his death in 1594, Jesuits hailed Gonzalo de Tapia as a proto-martyr of their missions in northwestern New Spain. They did not do the same for María, Tapia’s Indigenous translator who died together with him on the same day in Tovoropa. In this talk, I offer a reconstruction of María’s life by piecing together references to her in Jesuit letters, anuas, relations, and manuscript histories. Questioning the gendered hierarchies of mission histories, I argue that María’s life highlights the important yet often overlooked roles Indigenous women played as lay missionaries in the evangelization of Sinaloa in the late sixteenth …

Tungsten-Enhanced Breast Cancer Metastasis To The Bone Is Associated With Alterations In The Bone Niche., Cameron J. Chock, Alicia Bolt May 2022

Tungsten-Enhanced Breast Cancer Metastasis To The Bone Is Associated With Alterations In The Bone Niche., Cameron J. Chock, Alicia Bolt

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

The objective of this thesis project was to investigate the effects of tungsten on breast cancer metastasis to the bone niche, using the 4T1 orthotopic breast cancer model. Oral tungsten (15 ppm) exposure did not affect primary tumor growth. However, following tungsten exposure there were marked changes in the bone niche, including increased metastasis of 4T1 tumor cells and increased osteolysis. Further analysis of the bone niche indicates that enhanced metastasis is associated with a pro-tumorigenic immune suppressive environment, including increased number of granulocytic myeloid derived suppressor cells and increased gene expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β and the activated …

Ontogenetic Niche Shift As A Driver Of Community Structure And Diversity In Non-Avian Dinosaurs, Katlin M. Schroeder May 2022

Ontogenetic Niche Shift As A Driver Of Community Structure And Diversity In Non-Avian Dinosaurs, Katlin M. Schroeder

Biology ETDs

As some of the most charismatic megafauna to ever walk the earth, the physiology, morphology, growth and evolution of non-avian theropods has been studied exhaustively, yet little is understood about their roles in ecosystems as juveniles. For carnivorous megatheropods, which exceed 1,000kg in mass yet hatched from eggs of limited size, the likelihood of utilizing different prey through ontogeny was high, simply by proxy of the immense difference in size between adults and juveniles. We found these ontogenetic niche shifts, evidenced by significantly different dental microwear in Tyrannosaurids, to have excluded dinosaurian mesocarnivores from Mesozoic communities. The few dinosaurian mesocarnivores …

A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Attention Bias For Facial Expressions Of Emotion, Joshua W. Maxwell May 2022

A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Attention Bias For Facial Expressions Of Emotion, Joshua W. Maxwell

Psychology ETDs

The progression of affective science in the last few decades has brought with it a sub-field concerned with whether task-irrelevant facial expressions of emotion guide selective attention against our will. Such attentional bias is intuitively plausible, yet numerous recent studies were unable to observe it, motivating a meta-analysis (Chapter 2). Although the overall effect of 2.4 ms from 152 cases (g = .0823) was significantly greater than zero, its small size indicates a barely detectable phenomenon with no practical significance. A plausible explanation for this lack of attentional bias for emotional faces was tested in Chapter 3; even infrequently …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Health care delivery shifted and adapted with the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Stroke care was negatively affected across the care continuum and may lead to poor community living outcomes in those who survived a stroke during the ongoing pandemic. For instance, delays in seeking care, changes in length of stays, and shifts in discharge patterns were observed during the pandemic. Those seeking care were younger and had more severe neurologic effects from stroke. Increased strain was placed on caregivers and public health efforts, and community-wide lockdowns, albeit necessary to reduce the spread …

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Does Not Attenuate Methamphetamine-Induced Expression Of Conditioned Place Preference In Female And Male Rats, Nicole C. Reyna May 2022

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Does Not Attenuate Methamphetamine-Induced Expression Of Conditioned Place Preference In Female And Male Rats, Nicole C. Reyna

Psychology ETDs

Despite the need, there are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological treatments for methamphetamine use disorders. Cue-induced craving during drug withdrawal remains a significant contributor to high relapse rates. Thus, understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of cue-induced drug-seeking behavior is critical. Previous research indicates that the selective 5-HT2A antagonist M100907 attenuates the acquisition of methamphetamine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in male and female adult rats. The present study examines the effects of M100907 on expression of methamphetamine-induced drug-seeking behavior using a biased CPP design in adult male and female Long Evans rats (PND 95-112). During conditioning, rats were administered either saline or …

Cost-Effective Use Of The Protein S Algorithm In Thrombophilia Testing, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, John V. Mitsios, Richard A. Marlar

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: One of the most complex risk factors for the laboratory assessment of thrombophilia is Protein S (PS). The testing algorithm for PS employs the plasma-based assays of free PS antigen, total PS antigen, and PS activity creating a complex diagnostic scheme that can lead to misdiagnosis if incorrectly used, and a potential waste of resources and money.

CONTENT: This paper compares the recently published evidence-based algorithm from the International Society for Hemostasis and Thrombosis (ISTH) with several commonly performed nonevidence-based testing schemes, to demonstrate the efficiency of the evidence-based algorithm for diagnostic efficiency with improved patient care and increased …

Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields May 2022

Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Existing literature has established that laboring people with obesity have poorer intrapartum outcomes compared to their lower weight counterparts, including elevated c-section rates which increase with increasing BMI. People with obesity are at increased risk for complications related to surgical birth so optimizing chances for vaginal delivery is of utmost importance yet professional guidelines about labor management are lacking. Research has established that people with obesity have longer times in labor especially early labor, need more labor stimulating medications and have physiologic changes that alter the labor process compared to lower weight people. Literature on the impact of midwifery care …

(Un)Matched: Racialized Narratives Of U.S.-Based Japanese Men, Masculinity, And Heterosexuality In Online Dating Apps, Keisuke Kimura

Communication ETDs

In this study, I documented and examined U.S.-based Japanese men’s narratives about their day-to-day experiences in and across online dating contexts. Through the analysis of narratives, I critiqued how multilayered differences (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and more) working with dominant social structures affect their everyday experiences within the spectrum of power, privilege, and marginalization in the transnational space. Specifically, the overarching purposes and goals of this study were to better understand U.S.-based Japanese men’s online dating experiences and to critique the relationalities of how Japanese men’s narratives (i.e., micro-level context) and their beliefs/attitudes within and between cultural communities …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Kidney transplant (KT) recipients face post-transplant health issues. Immunosuppressive agents can cause hyperlipidemia, hypertension, post-transplant diabetes, and glomerulopathy. Post-transplant weight gain and decreased activity are associated with poor quality of life, sleep, and cardiometabolic outcomes. This study will test the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally tailored diet and exercise intervention for KT patients delivered immediately post-transplant using novel technology. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and physical rehabilitation therapist will examine participants' cultural background, preferences, and health-related obstacles (with consultation from the transplant team) to create an individualized exercise and meal plan. The RDN will provide medical nutrition therapy via …

Hepatitis C Screening, Confirmation, And Referral Improvement Project, Maria E. Mcmahon

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Hepatitis C is an illness caused by the blood-borne Hepatitis C virus (HCV), and usually becomes a chronic condition. Left untreated, HCV can lead to severe liver disease and liver failure. Newer treatments are effective and well tolerated, but most people with chronic HCV are not accessing treatment due to several factors that will be discussed. The primary objectives of this quality improvement project were to improve the treatment cascade, provide education to providers and patients, and facilitate screening, virus confirmation, and referral to treatment, in a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Speaker Diarization And Identification From Single-Channel Classroom Audio Recording Using Virtual Microphones, Antonio Gomez May 2022

Speaker Diarization And Identification From Single-Channel Classroom Audio Recording Using Virtual Microphones, Antonio Gomez

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Speaker identification in noisy audio recordings, specifically those from collaborative learning environments, can be extremely challenging. There is a need to identify individual students talking in small groups from other students talking at the same time. To solve the problem, we assume the use of a single microphone per student group without any access to previous large datasets for training.

This dissertation proposes a method of speaker identification using cross-correlation patterns associated to an array of virtual microphones, centered around the physical microphone. The virtual microphones are simulated by using approximate speaker geometry observed from a video recording. The patterns …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Convalescent plasma, collected from donors who have recovered from a pathogen of interest, has been used to treat infectious diseases, particularly in times of outbreak, when alternative therapies were unavailable. The COVID-19 pandemic revived interest in the use of convalescent plasma. Large observational studies and clinical trials that were executed during the pandemic provided insight into how to use convalescent plasma, whereby high levels of antibodies against the pathogen of interest and administration early within the time course of the disease are critical for optimal therapeutic effect. Several studies have shown outpatient administration of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) to be …
