Modeling And Simulation Of Damage In The Brazilian Indirect Tension Test Using The Finite-Discrete Element Method, Jeremiah C. Leyba
Modeling And Simulation Of Damage In The Brazilian Indirect Tension Test Using The Finite-Discrete Element Method, Jeremiah C. Leyba
Civil Engineering ETDs
The Brazilian indirect tension test is used to investigate possible correlations between progressive damage and associated permeability changes. The test offers ease of replicability with a damage behavior known to lead to fracture openings as a tool for interpreting the indirect tensile strength of concrete and rocks. This behavior can lend insight into the nature of tensile damage and fracture progression in association with changes in permeability. The nature of these brittle materials is known to exhibit rapid failures in the Brazilian indirect tension test and require a method to retard the progression of damage for the possibility of acquiring …

Cultivation of microalgae has the potential to provide lipid-derived feedstocks for conversion to liquid transportation fuels. Lipid extracts from microalgae are significantly more complex than those of traditional seed oils, and their composition changes significantly throughout the microalgal growth period. With three-acyl side chains per molecule, triglycerides (TAGs) are an important fuel precursor, and the distribution of acyl-chain composition for TAGs has significant impact on fuel properties and processing. Therefore, determination of the distribution of microalgal TAG production is needed to assess the value of algae extracts designed for fuel production and to optimize strain, cultivation, and harvesting practices. Methods …

Assessment Of Hydrotreatment For Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Biocrudes From Sewage Sludge, Microalgae, And Pine Feedstocks, Tanner Schaub
Assessment Of Hydrotreatment For Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Biocrudes From Sewage Sludge, Microalgae, And Pine Feedstocks, Tanner Schaub
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Bulk property measurement, simulated distillation, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) are utilized for direct description and comparison of the chemical composition of raw and hydrotreated biocrude samples from pine, microalgae (Chlorella sp.), and sewage sludge. With hydrotreatment, the nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur content as well as viscosity, density and moisture content of all biocrudes decreased to yield a more desirable product. For non-upgraded/raw biocrudes, simulated distillation and GC-MS data reveal that microalgae and sewage sludge biocrudes are comprised of a high proportion of n-alkanes which distill between 260°C …

Ft-Icr Ms Analysis Of Blended Pine-Microalgae Feedstock Htl Biocrudes, Tanner Schaub
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) is utilized for the direct comparison of the chemical composition of biocrudes generated from the hydrothermal liquefaction of 100% pine, 100% algae, 75:25 pine:algae, and 50:50 pine:algae feedstocks. Analysis reveals that the heteroatom class composition within the 72:25 and 50:50 pine:algae biocrudes is a composite of the two parent feeds (i.e., pine and algae) with a lower relative abundance of Ox species and a higher relative abundance of nitrogen-containing species than the pine biocrude. Alternatively, the biocrude blends have a lower relative abundance of nitrogen-containing species where N>2 than the …

Characterization Of Biocrude Oil Produced From Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Wastewater-Treatment Microalgae In A Pilot-Scale Continuous Flow Reactor, Catherine Brewer
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Algae-derived biofuels have attracted significant interest due to the superiorities of not competing with land for food production, abilities to clean contaminated water, higher growth rates, and strong CO2-mitigation abilities. In the last two decades, most researches have focused on hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of whole, wet algal biomass in batch reactors. To develop commercial scale operations, a significant technological shift from batch to continuous reactor systems is inevitable. In this study, char-free biocrude oil production from HTL of wastewater treatment (WWT) microalgae in a pilot-scale continuous flow reactor (CFR) were reported. Results showed the CFR system was able to run …

Fabrication And Modification Of A Pilot-Scale Continuous Flow Reactor For Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Wet Biomass, Catherine Brewer
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Currently, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wet biomass for biofuel production shows significant advantages over other thermos-conversion techniques, owing to higher productivity and quality of biocrude oil, no need of feedstock dewatering, and higher adaptability to the existing infrastructure of petroleum refinery. To investigate the feasibility of scaling up of HTL reaction, in this study, a pilot-scale continuous flow reactor (CFR) was built up and modified for HTL of biomass slurry under water subcritical conditions. A novel dual high-pressure filters system was introduced in this CFR system, with the functions of HTL solids removal and self-refreshing. Commissioning work was carried out …

We provide a direct and detailed comparison of the chemical composition of petroleum crude oil (from the Gulf of Mexico), shale oil, and three HTL biocrudes (i.e., clean pine, microalgae Chlorella sp., and sewage sludge feedstocks). Ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) reveals that HTL biocrudes are compositionally more similar to shale oil than petroleum crude oil and that only a few heteroatom classes (e.g., N1, N2, N1O1, and O1) are common to organic sediment- and biomass-derived oils. All HTL biocrudes contain a diverse range of oxygen-containing compounds when compared to either petroleum crude or …

High Lipid Low Lipid Algae Htl Mass Energy Balances, Catherine Brewer
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of high-lipid microalgae Nannochloropsis salina (N. salina) and low-lipid microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria (G. sulphuraria) were run under subcritical conditions (310-350 °C and 10-17 MPa) in a 1.8 L batch autoclave system. HTL mass and energy balances for both species were compared for under different reaction operating conditions to predict the optimum reaction conditions for new algae strains based on their feedstock composition. Bio-crude oils and chars were characterized by bomb calorimetry, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Under the optimized conditions, 59 wt.% and 31 wt.% of the bio-oil yields …

Free Fatty Acids, Tri-, Di- And Monoacylglycerol Production And Depth-Related Cycling In The Northeast Atlantic, Tanner Schaub
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
We present the identification and vertical distribution of suspended particulate lipids comprised of C, H and O which have the potential to sequester carbon from the upper ocean when associated with sinking particles. Lipids have been shown to be valuable in a host of environments to detail both the sources and processing of organic materials in the oceans. Here we present this level of information, enabled by direct-infusion, high resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). We present the water column distribution of free fatty acids, tri-, di- and monoacylglycerols from the surface layer to abyssopelagic depth …

Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Algae Grown On Brackish Dairy Wastewater, Catherine Brewer
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) is a thermochemical process that uses subcritical water (270-350 °C and 8-18 MPa both as a solvent and a reaction medium to convert organic biomass constituents into energy-rich bio-crude oil. HTL is most suitable for conversion of wet feedstocks including algae. In this study, we compare the oil yields and energy recoveries from the HTL of a microalgal polyculture used to remove excess nutrients from brackish dairy manure effluent. The biomass was cultured from a sample taken from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility (BGNDRF), Alamogordo, NM in a photo bioreactor system. …

Metabolic response to four suboptimal cultivation temperatures was explored in Nannochloropsis salina, with an emphasis on fatty acid and lipid metabolism. Cultures were cultivated in controlled environmental photobioreactors. Physiological performance, characterized by growth rate and photosynthetic output, were reduced at all three cold stress temperatures (5 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees Celsius, 15 degrees Celsius). However, biomass productivity and overall growth for cultures at 20 degrees Celsius was like that of those grown at the optimal temperature (25 degrees Celsius). Fatty acid productivity was elevated at all suboptimal temperatures, and both total fatty acid and eicosapentaenoic acid content were statically elevated …

Impact Of Iron Porphyrin Complexes When Hydroprocessing Algal Htl Biocrude, Tanner Schaub
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
We apply Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) for direct characterization of iron-porphyrins in hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) biocrude oils derived from two algae: Tetraselmis sp. and cyanobacteria. The iron porphyrin compounds are shown to cause catalyst bed plugging during hydroprocessing due to iron deposition. Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was utilized for iron quantitation in the plugged catalyst beds formed through hydroprocessing of the two HTL biocrudes and identifies an enrichment of iron in the upper five centimeters of the catalyst bed for Tetraselmis sp. (Fe=100,728 ppm) and cyanobacteria (Fe=115,450 ppm). Direct infusion FT-ICR MS analysis …

Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
The oceans have substantial potential for climate change mitigation due to their capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. A crucial role has marine organic matter. By using novel direct-infusion-Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry, we report here that within an open Atlantic Ocean hundreds of distinct sulfur-containing lipids (S-lipids) exist which are 95% not recognized pointing to huge gap of knowledge on the S-lipid ecological role. We found that the upper ocean is dominated by unsaturated S-lipids (Mw>600 Da). Their depth-related transformations cause incomplete degradation/transformation and depth accumulation of the more refractory saturated compounds with reduced Mwï¾455 Da. We …
