Gender Differences In Internal Medicine Grand Rounds - Speakers At A Local Academic Hospital, Parisa Mortaji, Eileen Barrett Sep 2018

Gender Differences In Internal Medicine Grand Rounds - Speakers At A Local Academic Hospital, Parisa Mortaji, Eileen Barrett

HSC Education Days

Despite increasing numbers of female medical students and junior physicians in America, women are still underrepresented in leadership in medicine. Many theories have been proposed to explain this, and gender bias has been shown to be a contributing factor. Within academic hospitals, grand rounds provides an opportunity for dissemination of clinical knowledge. Exposure to female presenters is thus critical to allow for female trainees to establish relationships and witness role modeling opportunities. The aim of this study is to assess whether gender differences exist in Internal Medicine grand rounds presenters at an academic hospital. We hypothesize that the proportion of …

Clinical psychology interns come into their internship training with a varying degree of coursework and clinical training. The internship year, similar to residency in the medical field, is a time for interns to move towards independent practice thus being able to think critically and independently when assessing for and making diagnoses. As such, the development of clinical reasoning skills has become a crucial competency for interns to develop during their internship year. Understanding the clinical reasoning of interns will assist with evaluating the internship curriculum and training experience while also paving the way for considering innovative learning practices to facilitate …

Mental Health In Medical School:Students Share Their Stories, Jessie Medina, Elizabeth Lawrence Sep 2018

Mental Health In Medical School:Students Share Their Stories, Jessie Medina, Elizabeth Lawrence

HSC Education Days

This project was inspired by the suicide of a PGY II Internal Medicine resident. Medical students, residents, and physicians are reluctant to disclose or seek help for their own mental health concerns.Physicians and trainees suffer in silence because of the fear of being stigmatized, concerns about medical licensing and credentialing, and the challenges of accessing confidential care. In the aftermath of our colleagues’ suicide, we were motivated to provide a forum for students to discuss their personal struggles with mental illness. Although matriculating medical students are less depressed, less burned out, and have higher quality of life scores than their …

Oxygen And Silver-Oxygen Defects In Ge2se3 Electrochemical Metallization Bridge Memristors, Jau-Tzuoo Chen Sep 2018

Oxygen And Silver-Oxygen Defects In Ge2se3 Electrochemical Metallization Bridge Memristors, Jau-Tzuoo Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations of oxygen and silver defects in a crystalline model of amorphous Ge2Se3. We studied defects arising from atomic oxygen and dioxygen, as well as interstitial silver and silver displacing germanium, following Campbell's conjecture on the mechanism of dendrite formation. For oxygen defect concentrations below 2%, we show that O2 dissociates in Ge2Se3, oxygen atoms are immobile, and oxygen atoms do not cluster. Within this model, the most preferred oxygen defect in intrinsic Ge2Se3 is Ge-O-Ge bridge. We conclude that oxygen defects …

A Biomechanical Comparison Of A Low-Profile Mesh Plate Contrasted With Tension Band Wiring Treatment Of Olecranon Fractures And Osteotomies, Jasmin Regalado Sep 2018

A Biomechanical Comparison Of A Low-Profile Mesh Plate Contrasted With Tension Band Wiring Treatment Of Olecranon Fractures And Osteotomies, Jasmin Regalado

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Olecranon fractures are common upper extremity injuries caused by direct trauma to the elbow. Open reduction and internal fixation is the current standard for olecranon fractures that exceed a 2 mm fragment displacement. The tension band wire (TBW) technique is the current standard of care for treating olecranon fractures due to its positive clinical results. However, the complication rate due to prominent hardware is reported to be upwards of 50\%. This research aims to biomechanically test and compare the stiffness and fracture gap of the traditional TBW technique to a low-profile titanium mesh plate (TMP) for chevron-type fractures and osteotomies …

Beryllium And Indium Activation Measurements Of Total Neutron Yield From A Pulsed Photoneutron Source, Kristina K. Brown

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

A pulsed photoneutron source consisting of a beryllium sphere and a 5 MeV endpoint 30 ns bremsstrahlung beam emanating from the Mercury pulsed-power source was assembled and tested in October 2017 at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. [1]. The objective of this experiment was to verify the feasibility of using a pulsed power source to create a large number of photoneutrons in a short period of time, leveraging the low photoneutron production threshold of 9Be to maximize neutron production. Several diagnostics were deployed to characterize the source and target, including indium and beryllium activation detectors that measured …

The Curious Policy Implications Of In Re Semcrude: Do Crude Oil Markets Need A Volcker Rule?, Joseph A. Schremmer Sep 2018

The Curious Policy Implications Of In Re Semcrude: Do Crude Oil Markets Need A Volcker Rule?, Joseph A. Schremmer

Faculty Scholarship

In the summer of 2008 the nation's largest and fastest growing midstream crude oil purchaser, SemCrude, declared bankruptcy. SemCrude's demise was not the result of a bear market but of its taste for risky options trading. The bankruptcy pitted the competing liens of thousands of unpaid oil and gas producers and royalty owners who sold their crude oil to SemCrude at the wellhead against those of SemCrude's lenders and the claims of downstream purchasers. The Bankruptcy Court for the Federal District of Delaware found none of the producers' lien rights to be perfected under applicable law and awarded priority to …

I Am My Hair, And My Hair Is Me: #Blackgirlmagic In Lis, Teresa Y. Neely Phd

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Chapter 5 in Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in LIS. Using intersectionality as a framework, this edited collection explores the experiences of women of color in library and information science (LIS). With roots in black feminism and critical race theory, intersectionality studies the ways in which multiple social and cultural identities impact individual experience. Libraries and archives idealistically portray themselves as egalitarian and neutral entities that provide information equally to everyone, yet these institutions often reflect and perpetuate societal racism, sexism, and additional forms of oppression. Women of color who work in LIS are often placed in …

A Derivation Of Fluidic Maxwell-Proca Equations For Electrodynamics Of Superconductors & Its Implication To Chiral Cosmology Model, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati Sep 2018

A Derivation Of Fluidic Maxwell-Proca Equations For Electrodynamics Of Superconductors & Its Implication To Chiral Cosmology Model, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Mario Liu described a hydrodynamic Maxwell equations [3] and, also discussed potential implications of these new approaches to superconductors which were made after Tajmar’s paper [4]. In this paper, we present for the first time a derivation of fluidic Maxwell-Proca equations. The name of fluidic Maxwell-Proca is proposed because the equations were based on modifying Maxwell-Proca and Hirsch’s theory of electrodynamics of superconductor. It is hoped that this paper may stimulate further investigations and experiments in superconductor. It may be expected to have some impact to cosmology modeling too, for instance we consider a hypothetical argument that photon mass can …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Earlier identification of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to identify neurobehavioral (NB) outcomes associated with PAE in infants.

METHODS: This manuscript evaluates NB outcomes at 6.33±1.12 months of age in 93 infants (39 PAE and 54 No-PAE) recruited prospectively into the ENRICH cohort. PAE was assessed by prospective repeated TLFB interviews and a panel of ethanol biomarkers. NB outcomes were evaluated by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-III), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Infant Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ-R), and Infant Sensory Profile (ISP).

RESULTS: Mean maternal age at enrollment was …

Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler Aug 2018

Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler

Architecture and Planning ETDs

In New Mexico and much of the American Southwest, ensuring clean, reliable, and sustainable drinking water supplies is one of the most significant planning challenges. One option to create more diverse and reliable water supplies is potable water reuse. There are two types of potable water reuse: indirect and direct potable reuse (IPR and DPR). Planned potable water reuse has not been widely implemented, largely due to negative public perceptions. This research involves the design and implementation of a large-scale survey administered to a sample of 4,000 water utility customers in Albuquerque, NM, to examine public acceptance of potable water …

Intraspecific Floral Color Variation As Perceived By Pollinators And Non-Pollinators: Evidence For Pollinator-Imposed Constraints?, Kellen Cedar Paine Aug 2018

Intraspecific Floral Color Variation As Perceived By Pollinators And Non-Pollinators: Evidence For Pollinator-Imposed Constraints?, Kellen Cedar Paine

Biology ETDs

Pollinator-mediated selection is expected to constrain floral color variation within plant populations, yet populations with high color variability are common in nature. To explore this, we collected floral reflectance spectra for 34 populations of 14 plant species of New Mexico, USA, and translated them into three different visual spaces. We found evidence that the majority comparisons were indistinguishable to bees, the dominant pollinator group. We also found that floral color variation was significantly greater for two non-pollinating groups, birds and humans. Our results suggest that a portion of human-perceived floral color variation within populations persists because it is invisible to …
