Sinusoidal Measurements, Omar Holguin Aug 2018

Sinusoidal Measurements, Omar Holguin

Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)

Metabolic response to four suboptimal cultivation temperatures was explored in Nannochloropsis salina, with an emphasis on fatty acid and lipid metabolism. Cultures were cultivated in controlled environmental photobioreactors. Physiological performance, characterized by growth rate and photosynthetic output, were reduced at all three cold stress temperatures (5 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees Celsius, 15 degrees Celsius). However, biomass productivity and overall growth for cultures at 20 degrees Celsius was like that of those grown at the optimal temperature (25 degrees Celsius). Fatty acid productivity was elevated at all suboptimal temperatures, and both total fatty acid and eicosapentaenoic acid content were statically elevated …

Temperature-Dependent Htlcomposition Of Microalgal Hydrothermal Liquefaction Oils Monitored By Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Ms, Tanner Schaub Aug 2018

Temperature-Dependent Htlcomposition Of Microalgal Hydrothermal Liquefaction Oils Monitored By Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Ms, Tanner Schaub

Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)

We illustrate a detailed compositional characterization of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) oils derived from two biochemically distinct microalgae, Nannochloropsis gaditana and Chlorella sorokiniana, for a range of reaction temperatures as observed by high-resolution electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS). The unique capability to unequivocally derive molecular formulae directly from FT-ICR MS-measured mass-to-charge ratio (for several thousand compounds in each oil) shows that lipids are completely reacted/converted for at any HTL reaction temperature above 200 oC and reveals the formation of non-lipid reaction products with increasing temperature. Specifically, lipid-rich oil is obtained at low reaction temperatures …

Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of High- And Low-Lipid Algae: Bio-Crude Oil Chemistry, Catherine Brewer Aug 2018

Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of High- And Low-Lipid Algae: Bio-Crude Oil Chemistry, Catherine Brewer

Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)

The bio-crude oil produced from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of a high-protein microalgae useful for wastewater treatment, Galdieria sulphuraria, was comprehensively characterized, and compared to that of a high-lipid microalgae useful for biofuel production, Nannochloropsis salina. HTL was conducted in a batch reactor at temperature of 310-350 °C and reaction times of 5-60 min. Characterization methods included high-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectroscopy (FT-ICR MS), fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Milder reaction conditions favored bio-crude oil yield and quality …

Translating Global Nature: Territoriality, Environmental Discourses, And Ecocultural Identities, José R. Castro-Sotomayor Aug 2018

Translating Global Nature: Territoriality, Environmental Discourses, And Ecocultural Identities, José R. Castro-Sotomayor

Communication ETDs

In this study, I explore environmental discourses circulating among Indigenous transboundary organizations working on environmental initiatives at the border between Ecuador and Colombia. I focus on three global environmental discourses –sustainability, development, and climate change– as they are at the core of the global environmental governance vernacular. La Gran Familia Awá Binacional (GFAB), one of the few transboundary Indigenous organizations working along the binational border, utilizes these global concepts to frame their environmental initiatives and projects. I use a critical and interpretive qualitative approach to investigate, deconstruct, and rearticulate global environmental discourses circulating among and translated by two of the …

Sociocultural Diversity In The Prehispanic Southwest: Learning, Weaving, And Identity In The Chaco Regional System, A.D. 850-1140, Edward Alexander Jolie Aug 2018

Sociocultural Diversity In The Prehispanic Southwest: Learning, Weaving, And Identity In The Chaco Regional System, A.D. 850-1140, Edward Alexander Jolie

Anthropology ETDs

Between about A.D. 850 and 1140, the archaeology of Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico reveals the rapid construction of large communal structures where smaller settlements had existed previously and shows that the locality became the core of an extensive regional system in the Four Corners region of the northern Southwest integrated by formal trails, the circulation of nonlocal goods, and the sharing of ritual items. Researchers vigorously debate the role of increased sociopolitical complexity in this development, but less attention has been given to questions of sociocultural diversity and its impacts.

Guided by previous research suggesting the existence of …

A Phenomenological Study Of A Combined Mindfulness And Social-And-Emotional Learning Intervention As Delivered By A Counselor-Consultant To Early-Childhood Educators, Alfredo F. Palacios

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Mindfulness is an emerging tool that is growing in use in early childhood educational settings. This project identified a high needs area of Albuquerque New Mexico and implemented a mindfulness-based intervention with teachers in a Head Start setting. This study took place over a school year where teachers met weekly with researchers for training in mindfulness and social emotional learning. This study employed a phenomenological inquiry into the perceived experiences of teachers learning these pedagogical tools to be used in their classrooms. Implications are made for early childhood educators and professional counselors that serve in a consultation role in these …

Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac Aug 2018

Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac

Psychology ETDs

Given the widespread costs associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD; World Health Organization, 2011), it is unsurprising that many treatments exist for AUD. Moreover, many treatments have been rigorously studied via experimental research designs. In such research, treatment success has been defined predominantly as abstinence from alcohol or, more recently, no heavy drinking days. Consumption-based definitions of treatment success, rather than alternative non-consumption based definitions, have dominated in the field for at least two reasons. First, there are multiple measures of similar non-consumption constructs (e.g., quality of life, psychosocial functioning), and very little research has been conducted to direct researchers …

Hemocyanin-Like 1 Protein, Unique To Planorbid Snails, Supports Reproductive Output Of Biomphalaria Glabrata, Vector Of Schistosomiasis, Janeth Julieta Peña Aug 2018

Hemocyanin-Like 1 Protein, Unique To Planorbid Snails, Supports Reproductive Output Of Biomphalaria Glabrata, Vector Of Schistosomiasis, Janeth Julieta Peña

Biology ETDs

The Neotropical freshwater snail, Biomphalaria glabrata is a major intermediate host of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, causative agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis. Disease control efforts consist mainly of mass drug treatment but it is recognized that targeting of the snail vector is essential to prevent parasite transmission that leads to rapid (re)infections. This dissertation combines the knowledge of basic snail biology with modern molecular techniques including protein analysis, next-generation sequencing, proteomics, qRT-PCR and RNA interference to: (1) characterize hemocyanin-like genes in B. glabrata, in particular with further description of the egg mass fluid (EMF) protein hemocyanin-like 1 (Hcl-1), (2) …

On Some Metaphysical Problems Of Many Worlds Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati Aug 2018

On Some Metaphysical Problems Of Many Worlds Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Despite its enormous practical success, many physicists and philosophers alike agree that the quantum theory is full of contradictions and paradoxes which are difficult to solve consistently. Even after 90 years, the experts themselves still do not all agree what to make of it. The area of disagreement centers primarily around the problem of describing observations. Formally, the socalled quantum measurement problem can be defined as follows: the result of a measurement is a superposition of vectors, each representing the quantity being observed as having one of its possible values. The question that has to be answered is : how …

Surface-Water Groundwater Interactions In The Middle Rio Grande, Nm Implications For Bank Storage And Native Species, Tom Heller Aug 2018

Surface-Water Groundwater Interactions In The Middle Rio Grande, Nm Implications For Bank Storage And Native Species, Tom Heller

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Riparian zones are important for ecological purposes and ecosystem processes, and are valued for aesthetic, recreational, cultural, and historical reasons. The declining integrity of cottonwood-dominated riparian systems in the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) of central New Mexico has been evident for several decades, of which the largest cause has been the severe alterations riparian hydrology. While cottonwood germination responses to changing flood regimes have been well studied, the response to changing groundwater dynamics - and the suitability of groundwater regimes in the MRG - is less well understood. This study used pressure transducer groundwater datasets installed in the Rio Grande …

Opportunities To Enhance Environmental Flows On The Rio Chama, Anjali Bean Aug 2018

Opportunities To Enhance Environmental Flows On The Rio Chama, Anjali Bean

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The construction of El Vado dam on the Rio Chama in 1935 dramatically changed the natural flow of the river, reducing spring runoff and summer scouring floods in favor of providing a constant water supply to downstream users. The San Juan-Chama Project, a trans-basin water diversion built as part of the Colorado River Compact, also significantly increased water flow in the river, a unique situation in the state of New Mexico. This increase in management of the river for human benefit has permanently altered the natural hydrograph of the river and the ecology and geomorphology of the system that depends …

Dental Hygeinists Clinical Assessment Of Dental Cervical Lesions, Shyanne Padilla

Dental Hygiene ETDs

Dental hygiene is among one of the fastest growing career fields in the healthcare system. With dental hygienists spending a considerable amount of time with their patients during periodic recall appointments, it is important for dental hygienists to be calibrated with one another in how they recognize and aid in recommending treatment options for certain dental conditions. Dental cervical lesions is one of the most commonly seen oral implications in the dental office, many times being associated with tooth sensitivity. With the array of etiologies and treatment options for dental cervical lesions it is important to see if this same …
