Congenital heart disease (CHD) is not a new or rare problem; it has likely always been a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality and clocks in today as the most frequently occurring birth defect, affecting an estimated 1 in 100 newborns (CDC, 2025). Prior to the middle of the 20th century, there was little to be done about CHD, as no treatments existed. Everything changed with the advancement of options for surgical repair of CHDs, significantly prolonging lifespans and improving quality of life for affected individuals. The United States is facing a dire housing crisis, and most Americans agree that housing is a universal necessity. Yet under current Supreme Court jurisprudence, housing is not a fundamental right, and individuals facing housing insecurity from an eviction are generally not members of a suspect class. This is because eviction is often viewed as an individual problem and a symptom of poverty, which the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed is not a suspect classification. This Article disrupts the superficial narrative that eviction is an individualistic symptom of poverty, and instead views evictions from a systemic and historical perspective. It …

The early diaries and letters of Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886) reveal, contrary to previous scholarship, a passionate and sensitive young man engaged in multiple social activities with male and female friends and family, as well as enjoying licentious and respectful personal relationships with women. CFA was strategic with whom he was friendly or reserved, rooted in his hostility towards “hangers-on” and “hypocrites.” CFA also read widely both fiction and non-fiction with an affected sensitivity consistent with his desire for a literary-oriented life, the latter most reflected in his later curating his forebears’ papers. This phenomenological qualitative study explored the use of the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Role-Playing Game as a Game-Based Learning (GBL) model, measuring middle school student perceptions of engagement, motivation, and skill development through interactive storytelling. The study used a Practitioner Research theoretical framework and Thematic Analysis to identify emergent themes from the collected data. The study included gameplay of D&D after school with a small group of participants grades 6-8. Results indicated that participants reported consistently high levels of motivation and engagement. From Synapse To Circuit: Mechanisms Of Behavioral Flexibility And Its Restoration After Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Jayapriya Chandrasekaran

Behavioral flexibility—the ability to adapt behavior when contingencies change—is a fundamental executive function supported by orbitofrontal–striatal circuitry. This dissertation examined molecular, motivational, and circuit mechanisms underlying flexibility and its restoration after prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). In healthy mice, GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors in the orbitofrontal cortex increased during outcome updating, while AMPA receptor subunits in the dorsal striatum rose during new learning, defining temporally distinct plasticity processes. PAE impaired reversal learning under low-reward conditions, but not when motivation was high, indicating altered thresholds for circuit engagement rather than permanent loss. Finally, optogenetic stimulation of OFC→dorsal striatum projections rescued flexibility in PAE …

Neutrosophic numbers have received increasing attention from researchers and industrialists to address the indeterminacy and uncertainty inherent in real-life decision-making. This study aims to solve the transportation problem where supply, demand and transportation costs are Nonagonal Neutrosophic Numbers (NNNs). In the existing literature, various methods have been introduced to solve transportation problems (TPs) involving neutrosophic parameters. The application of Nonagonal Neutrosophic Numbers to transportation problems is a relatively recent development. NNNs offer a more detailed and adaptable representation of uncertainty by utilizing a nine-parameter structure that captures the degrees of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. This study establishes fundamental results in the emerging domains of neutrosophic quadruple metric spaces and neutrosophic quadruple normed spaces. Building upon the recent definition of neutrosophic quadruple metric spaces, the first primary contribution is the development of fixed-point theory within this generalized framework. Specifically, we formulate and rigorously prove an analogue of the Banach contraction principle tailored for neutrosophic quadruple metric spaces. Furthermore, we establish additional fixed-point theorems applicable in this context, extending foundational results from classical metric spaces and simpler neutrosophic structures to handle the increased complexity and uncertainty modeled by quadruple-valued neutrosophic sets. Disparities Between Chronological And Biological Age: A Biocultural Analysis Of Aging In Contemporary Populations, Nicollette S. Appel

This dissertation investigates how structural and cultural factors collectively influence the aging process and how these effects manifest in both hard and soft tissues. Chapter 2 used an AI-based CT body composition tool and a CT-based biological age model to examine the relationship between age discrepancy and demographic variables such as sex, race/ethnicity, and manner of death. Results demonstrate significant differences in age discrepancy, with females, Native Americans, and individuals who died of natural causes exhibiting greater discrepancies. Chapters 3 and 4 further evaluate whether anthropological approaches to skeletal aging can be improved by adopting a biocultural perspective. These chapters …

This dissertation examines how Shia communities in Sindh, Pakistan, mobilize the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai as counter-history within a postcolonial order that folds sectarian difference into homogenized national culture. In dominant state and literary discourse, Latif is cast as a universal Sufi poet whose spirituality transcends doctrinal division and secures Sindhi and Pakistani belonging. The performances studied here place pressure on that settlement by treating the Risalo as a medium through which Karbala remains historically present. From among the sixty-four local councils affiliated with the Sociedad Protección Mutua de Trabajadores Unidos (SPMDTU), Council No. 2 at Capulín was among the earliest organized, quickly grew in membership, and was known for its attention to recordkeeping of minutes, financial ledgers, and attendance logs. The council was established around 1901, and by midcentury a history of the SPMDTU noted: “Este concilio siempre ha tenido buen manejo. In the U.S. West, research points to a significant transformation of rural places, including rural blight, a decline in extractive industries, and changing migration patterns. In Northern New Mexico, these rural transformations are occurring alongside a long and continuing history of tensions and conflicts relating to land, water, and property regimes, which are intertwined with notions of identity, culture, and power. Using participant observation and semi-structured interviews, this thesis explores how rural transformations, particularly shifting land ownership, have influenced identities and cultural values along the Upper Rio Chama in Northern New Mexico. As the conservative-dominated Supreme Court continues to accrue its power, commentators on both the political right and left suggest that those pursuing progressive policy goals would do well to turn to originalist methodology. Many of the Justices on the Court purport to be originalists, and progressive originalist arguments are more likely to appeal to this otherwise tough crowd. Haven’t progressives heard that we’re all originalists now? I argue that originalism’s appeal to progressives is largely illusory. Originalism is unlikely to make a difference before a Court controlled by a supermajority of conservative Justices who exercise discretion over the interpretive methodology …

An “underrule” occurs when the Supreme Court renders a decision diametrically opposed to a prior case without explicitly overruling the prior case. With the decision in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference NAACP in 2024, the Court has now issued two underrules during the development of its racial gerrymandering jurisprudence. These underrules, particularly in a politically sensitive area such as racial gerrymandering, undermine confidence in the judiciary. But underrules are nothing new to doctrinal development in the realm of race and redistricting. In nine treaties signed by Tribal Nations and the United States between 1867 and 1868, the United States promised redress to Native Americans for wrongs committed against them by “bad men among the whites.” Today, Native Americans are more likely to be killed by police than any other group, with much of this violence concentrated near the borders of Tribal Nations. Although claims brought under the “bad men” treaty clauses offer an avenue for combatting this epidemic of violence, courts have begun interpreting the clauses to apply only when “wrongs” occur within Tribal boundaries. Parents’ right to control the upbringing of their own children is long-established in the United States. However, in the case of child abuse, neglect, or abandonment, a state can terminate parental rights, permanently severing the legal relationship between a parent and a child. In New Mexico, to terminate parental rights for abuse or neglect the State must prove three elements by clear and convincing evidence: (1) the child is abused or neglected; (2) the conditions that brought the child into care are unlikely to change in the foreseeable future and (3) this is the case despite reasonable efforts by the …

Plaintiffs alleging disability discrimination under New Mexico law face significantly higher barriers than plaintiffs alleging other types of discrimination. The plain text of the New Mexico Human Rights Act (“NMHRA”) provides equal protections against discrimination based on characteristics such as race, gender, pregnancy, and disability. However, by relying on federal disability law to guide the interpretation of the NMHRA in cases of disability discrimination, New Mexico courts have effectively created a two-tiered system in which claims of disability discrimination face higher barriers to prevail in an administrative adjudication and survive summary judgment than other discrimination claims. Juror decision-making is inherently influenced by psychological biases, which pose a significant challenge to the fairness and accuracy of proximate cause determinations in tort cases. This Article explores the cognitive and social biases—such as hindsight bias, primacy, anchoring, belief in a just world, and moral outrage—that affect jurors as they engage in the complex reasoning required to assess foreseeability and causation. Given that jurors must disregard their knowledge of actual harm and set aside emotional responses to tragic injuries, the risk of bias is substantial. The existence of a right of intrastate travel implicates basic liberties like visiting parks, driving to visit family in another city, going to church or the doctor, or voting. In addition to its importance to everyday, basic liberties, the right of intrastate travel is important for vulnerable populations, like disaster evacuees, unhoused people subject to displacement, and people seeking abortions in states without uniform availability, like New Mexico. The national forests of the eastern United States are where and what they are today based in good part on a mistake. When they were being acquired and established in the early twentieth century, hydrology was in its infancy. Yet many hydrologists and their students in government were promising that these forests would provide significant protection from floods. They promised more than they should have. Forests as protection from floods were embroiled in a contentious and prolonged factual inquiry almost immediately thereafter. Tracing the evolution of the “rights of nature” movement from Indigenous law and early environmental ethics to modern global applications, this article reframes the debate around codification of legal rights for nature from moral theory to legal efficiency, arguing that the United States implicitly recognizes rights of nature within its environmental jurisprudence and statutory framework. Through detailed analyses of the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act alongside corresponding case studies, the author demonstrates how courts and Congress have already expanded standing, redefined injury, and recognized nature’s inherent right to exist and flourish. …

There is no greater threat to our public lands than energy dominance. The 1906 Antiquities Act gave presidents the power to proclaim national monuments on public lands, and today the federal government protects over 11 million acres as national monuments. President Trump plans to revoke and shrink monument protections so that these lands can be used for oil, gas, and mineral drilling, destroying cultural artifacts with detrimental impacts to air, water, and land. In December 2025, more than 40 bipartisan state legislative leaders from over 30 states, working through the National Conference of State Legislatures, issued a resolution titled “Federalism Restoration and State Empowerment.” The distinctive feature of American federalism has long been understood to be the distribution of powers between the national and state governments. This foundational element of our system of government—shared sovereignty—warrants revisiting by K-12 teachers and students.
