Chronic Injuries Due To Running And A Possible Cure With The Barefoot Style, Daniel M. Hoopes
Chronic Injuries Due To Running And A Possible Cure With The Barefoot Style, Daniel M. Hoopes
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Repetitive stress injuries, which are common amongst runners result from an accumulation of microdamage from repeated application of stress. This leads to strain, or deformation. At first, this falls within the physiologic range of elastic deformation. With excessive running, bones can be subjected to supraphysiologic plastic deformation and soft tissues can be subjected to supraphysiologic viscous deformation. High strain and high rates of application of that strain can lead to fatigue damage In bone, this manifests as microcracks, and as failures of collagen cross-links in soft tissue. These small-scale failures allow elastic hysteresis, which is the difference between the energy …
The Evolution Of The Femoral Stem Design In Total Hip Arthroplasty, Dustin Briggs
The Evolution Of The Femoral Stem Design In Total Hip Arthroplasty, Dustin Briggs
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Since the introduction of Dr. John Charnley’s “low-friction arthroplasty” in 1962, the general concepts of total hip arthroplasty have remained greatly unchanged. He laid the foundation for a predictably successful surgical intervention for an ailment previously difficult to treat. The low-friction arthroplasty featured a monoblock stainless steel femoral stem, high density polyethelene, self-curing polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), and aseptic technique. Although the general principles of arthroplasty have remained remarkably similar implant design has evolved over the past 50 years. The following is a review of the evolution of the femoral stem.
Management Of Pediatric Femur Shaft Fractures, Aaron Dickens
Management Of Pediatric Femur Shaft Fractures, Aaron Dickens
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Management of pediatric diaphyseal femur fractures has evolved significantly over the last 50 years. Nonoperative treatment with traction and immobilization was previously the mainstay of treatment. Due to the morbidity associated with prolonged immobilization and the development of fixation devices geared toward treatment of pediatric fractures, operative treatment is now more prevalent but is still age-ependent. Skeletal maturity and the potential for bony remodeling is a significant factor in guiding treatment.
The Effects Of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections On Patellar Tendinopathy, Shyla Mesch
The Effects Of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections On Patellar Tendinopathy, Shyla Mesch
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Physical therapy is often a very successful tool in the treatment of patellar tendinopathy and should be followed and implemented for at least 3 to 6 months as a first line of treatment. For those individuals suffering from recalcitrant patellar tendinopathy that have failed more conservative treatments, it may be worthwhile to include PRP injection therapy as a recommendation. Studies have shown decreases in tendon irregularities and results of pain reduction and/or increased function after PRP injection. Although current research is of lower quality and confers no clear benefit that can be stated with certainty, we can say PRP injection …

Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann
Nursing ETDs
Obesity has become the most significant noninfectious health risk in the United States, and the major causes of death and disability are shifting to chronic, non-communicable health conditions that are largely attributable to physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, and other diet-related factors. Among children and adolescents, the overweight/obesity rate is approaching 32%, with 17.9% of adolescents becoming obese. While the obesity rate has doubled in all age groups in the United States, it has tripled among young adults aged 18 to 28 years, and 70% of adolescents who are at a healthy weight will become overweight or obese as adults. …

The Law Of One Price And Virtual Worlds, Michael Morrison
The Law Of One Price And Virtual Worlds, Michael Morrison
Economics ETDs
Price convergence and purchasing power parity are two important foundations to international trade theory. Yet there is still no consensus on their existence, despite numerous studies. While the debate over price convergence and purchasing power parity continues, the last several years have seen a substantial rise in the use of virtual worlds. Virtual worlds are interactive digital environments where individuals with an internet connection can come together to communicate, cooperate and trade. Virtual worlds create smaller copies of the real world. These copies lack many of the complexities found in the real world. This feature makes virtual worlds a unique …

An Economic Analysis Of Evolving Health Hazards, Justin Tevie
Economics ETDs
Health hazards (e.g., West Nile virus and antibiotic resistance) by their nature are detrimental to the health of mankind and are a vexing problem for society. Health authorities awareness of the rising health care costs associated with these health hazards highlights the need to undertake research in these areas. This dissertation presents a series of papers on these health hazards. Chapter 2 develops a spatial filtering panel data count model to examine the factors that contributed to the high prevalence of human West Nile virus (WNV) in California and Colorado using county-level data from 2003 to 2007. An econometric analysis …
An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper
An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper
Psychology ETDs
The current research draws on evolutionary and life history theory to understand social facilitation of human energy expenditure, and test predictions focused on when and for whom increases in energetic effort are more likely to occur. Two studies tested the premise that cues of mates and/or competitors for mates can modify perceptions of the socio-ecological context of energy expenditure, and thereby change short-term energetic effort and exercise motivation and self-efficacy. Tests of psychological and physiological mediators and moderators were performed. Results provide preliminary support for the utilization of evolutionary theory to understand social facilitation by demonstrating significant effects of primes …
The Effect Of Post-Exercise Caffeine And Chlorogenic Acid Supplementation On Blood Glucose Disposal And Insulin Sensitivity, Jason Beam
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Caffeine and chlorogenic acid are two compounds in green coffee beans that alter blood glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity. Caffeine has been shown to decrease glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity when taken 60 minutes prior to an oral glucose tolerance test in humans, whereas chlorogenic acid has been shown to increase glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity in humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ingesting caffeine with dextrose or chlorogenic acid with dextrose immediately after an exhaustive bout of cycling on blood glucose and insulin disposal when compared to ingesting dextrose alone. Ten men (age: …
Beyond Stacking: An Exploration Of The Impact Of Background On Leadership Recruitment And Positional Segregation In Division-I Womens Basketball, Sonja Robinson
Beyond Stacking: An Exploration Of The Impact Of Background On Leadership Recruitment And Positional Segregation In Division-I Womens Basketball, Sonja Robinson
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Sports are often is seen as vehicles of social and career mobility, especially at the collegiate levels where full athletics scholarships grant students access to higher education. While sport, on the surface and at its best, espouses the values of equality and merit, studies examining under-representations of minority groups in key roles indicate that more work needs to be done on inclusiveness and equity. Leadership recruitment studies in sport traditionally evaluate the influence that playing positions have on career mobility (Grusky, 1963). Loy and Elvouge (1970) expanded upon that tradition to develop positional segregation (stacking') research, which explores the influence …

Fluorescent probes have been proved to be very valuable tools in chemical and biological applications, and extensive exploration has been made. Recently, reaction-based fluorescent probes became a new design trend and displayed great potential with remarkable implementation to the conventional design method. However, this field is still underdeveloped, and a lot of problems remain to be solved. As part of our groups research interest, my Ph.D. study centered on the development of new reaction-based fluorescent probes. Firstly, our previous research on Hg2+ was continued. In this work, we developed a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for Hg2+ with impressive …
Antimicrobial Activity And Mechanistic Study For The Poly(Phenylene Ethynylene) (Ppe)-Based Cationic Conjugated Polyelectrolytes And Oligo-Phenylene Ethynylenes, Ying Wang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
My dissertation work focuses on recent progress made in elucidating the intermolecular interactions between a novel class of synthetic phenylene ethynylene (PPE)-based conjugated polyelectrolyte polymers (CPEs) and oligomers (OPEs) and multiscale cellular targets that give rise to their remarkable broad spectrum biocidal activity. We studied the interactions and self-assembly behaviors of the CPEs and OPEs with a set of vital biomolecules, including lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, that reveal the potential pathways by which the synthetic biocidal agents could exert toxicity. Then, we explored the antimicrobial effects and mechanisms of the CPEs and OPEs on multiple clinically relevant pathogens, with …
Controlled Lasing In Gallium Nitride Nanowires, X Huiwen
Controlled Lasing In Gallium Nitride Nanowires, X Huiwen
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
There is considerable interest in ultra-small coherent light sources. A strong candidate is a semiconductor-nanowire laser, where a single, monolithic nanowire functions simultaneously as an optical microcavity and active medium, leading to an extremely compact and robust laser. Recent advances in nanowire synthesis have enabled realization of optically pumped nanowire lasers in different material systems, including III-V, III-nitride, and II-VI semiconductors. However, due to the limited lasing control techniques, most of the nanowire lasers operate in naturally-occurring multi-mode and randomly polarized states. Lasing control in nanowire lasers is strongly desired for many practical applications. For instance, specifically polarized lasing is …
Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of The Nonlinear Dynamical Trends Of Passively Mode-Locked Quantum Dot Lasers, Ravi Raghunathan
Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of The Nonlinear Dynamical Trends Of Passively Mode-Locked Quantum Dot Lasers, Ravi Raghunathan
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
In recent years, passively mode-locked quantum dot lasers have shown great promise as compact, efficient and reliable pulsed sources of light for a range of precision and high performance applications, such as high bit-rate optical communications, diverse waveform generation, metrology, and clock distribution in high-performance computing (HPC) processors. For such applications, stable optical pulses with short picosecond pulse durations and multi-gigahertz repetition rates are required. In addition, a low pulse-to-pulse timing jitter is also necessary to prevent errors arising from the ambiguity between neighboring pulses. In order to optimize pulse quality in terms of optical characteristics such as pulse shape …

The Biophysical Effects Of Deuterium Oxide On Biomolecules And Living Cells Through Open Notebook Science., Anthony Salvagno
The Biophysical Effects Of Deuterium Oxide On Biomolecules And Living Cells Through Open Notebook Science., Anthony Salvagno
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This dissertation explores various effects of deuterium oxide (D2O also known as heavy water) in nature. Water is everywhere and interacts with just about everything. As such, it would be quite a daunting task to characterize every effect that water exhibits on everything in the universe. This research is a small piece of the puzzle, and provides some fundamental understanding of how water interacts with other molecules. This is done from two viewpoints: (1) the effects of heavy water on living cells and (2) the effects of heavy water on molecules. Varying concentrations of deuterium oxide were used as the …

Azúcar Negra: (Re) Envisioning Race, Representation, And Resistance In The Afrofeminista Imaginary, Kiley Jeanelle Guyton Acosta
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
In this dissertation, I locate contemporary articulations of afrofeminismo in manifold modes of cultural production including literature, music, visual displays of the body, and digital media. As a point of departure, I examine the development of afrofeminismo in relation to colonial sexual violence in sugar-based economies to explain how colonial dynamics inflect ideologies of blanqueamiento/embranquecimento (racial whitening) and pseudo-scientific racial determinism. In this context, I address representations of the mujer negra (black woman) and the mulata (mulatto woman) in Caribbean and Brazilian cultural discourse. Specifically, I analyze how the discourses around, as well as by, these figures contribute(d) to the …
