Adatom Emission From Nanoparticles: Implications For Ostwald Ripening, Tyne Johns Sep 2013

Adatom Emission From Nanoparticles: Implications For Ostwald Ripening, Tyne Johns

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

To achieve clean air in our cities, all modern means of ground transportation make use of catalytic converters. Precious metal-based catalysts such as Pt and Pd are currently used in catalytic converters. To achieve higher fuel efficiency, combustion can be carried out in excess air resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reduction of these emissions has emerged as a major challenge. Most of the pollutants are emitted within the first 30 seconds after starting an engine because the catalyst is cold. The development of catalysts which achieve high activity at low temperatures will improve fuel efficiency and …

Effects Of Osmolytes On Amyloid-Beta Protein Surface Activity And Membrane Interactions, Juan Anaya Sep 2013

Effects Of Osmolytes On Amyloid-Beta Protein Surface Activity And Membrane Interactions, Juan Anaya

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

The misfolding and aggregation of proteins into fibrillar aggregates in the brain are linked to the pathogenesis of over 20 neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, the toxicity and neurodegenerative symptoms of Alzheimers disease are directly related to the aggregation of the amyloid-β (Aβ) protein into β-sheet rich insoluble fibrils. However, the mechanism and driving forces of Aβ fibril formation in vivo are still unknown. It has been shown previously that Aβ's surface activity and favorable interaction with lipid membranes can induce the formation of fibrils, suggesting a possible membrane-based mechanism of Aβ aggregation in Alzheimer's disease. Unlike dilute solutions used for in …

Zombie Economics: Violence And Economics In Three First-Person Shooter Zombie-Themed Video Games., Brynn S. Shaw Sep 2013

Zombie Economics: Violence And Economics In Three First-Person Shooter Zombie-Themed Video Games., Brynn S. Shaw

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis presents a textual analysis of three zombie-themed video games: Left4Dead, Call of Duty: Zombies, and Killing Floor. The relationship between violence and economics presented in the in-game actions is analyzed to demonstrate that when capitalism is seen as ideological in nature, the zombie-themed games observed can be seen as evidence of the reiteration of that ideology. A gradation of economic systems becomes apparent through a comparison of these video games to the zombie myth presented in film, using a combination of the methods of narrative examination and ludology. The games which imitate the capitalistic market do so by …

Dynamic Vegetation Roughness In The Riparian Zone, Tyler Gillihan Sep 2013

Dynamic Vegetation Roughness In The Riparian Zone, Tyler Gillihan

Civil Engineering ETDs

Vegetation in the floodplain plays an important role in dictating the hydraulics of an open channel river system. While vegetation is beneficial to the biological productivity of the river system, it can also increase flood risk due to increased channel roughness. Traditional means of predicting flow hydraulics involve applying a constant roughness value, while neglecting change in roughness due to flow characteristics and variation of vegetation parameters. The objective of this research was to develop and demonstrate techniques to hydraulically model an open channel river system while taking into account dynamic roughness due to vegetation. The Sedimentation and River Hydraulics …

Preliminary research work showed that nanosilica is capable of reducing OWC porosity and therefore is was thought that nanosilica incorporation may have potential to improve the aforementioned performance requirements. In this research, Type G OWC paste specimens produced with water to binder (w/b) ratio of …

Parallel Simulation Of Particle Dynamics With Application To Micropolar Peridynamic Lattice Modeling Of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Hossein Honarvar Gheitanbaf Sep 2013

Parallel Simulation Of Particle Dynamics With Application To Micropolar Peridynamic Lattice Modeling Of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Hossein Honarvar Gheitanbaf

Civil Engineering ETDs

As the first goal of this thesis, we will explain a general purpose parallel particle dynamics code (pdQ2). We describe the re-architecting of pdQ (the MD/PD code that was developed in [Sakhavand 2011]) as pdQ2. pdQ2 is completely non-domain-specific in that user files are clearly separated from non-user files and no #ifdefs exist in the code. Thus, it operates as a particle simulation engine that is capable of executing any parallel particle dynamics model. As in the original pdQ, users can customize their own physical models without having to deal with complexities such as parallelization, but the ease of extensibility …

The individual restaurant chain locations were treated as individual samples in the environment. Wards (1963) algorithm was used to group the individual restaurant chain locations into related clusters using simple correlation as the …

Disruption Of Ritual: Doctor/Patient Interactions In The Era Of Internet, Amanda Seeman Sep 2013

Disruption Of Ritual: Doctor/Patient Interactions In The Era Of Internet, Amanda Seeman

Sociology ETDs

The historical establishment of medicine as a profession laid the foundation on which it claims dominance and authority over medical decision-making. Through scientific discoveries and a state-recognized monopoly over medical work, doctors were able to subdue patients during doctor/patient interactions and conceal specialized knowledge from the public. Ritualized doctor/patient interactions are characterized as expert physician decision-making for passive compliant patients. However, the democratization of information on the internet has disrupted the ritual interactions of doctors and patients by granting open access to specialized medical knowledge. Internet informed patients bring their own knowledge to clinical encounters and use it to be …

Anchoring Energy Of Dengue E Protein Into Host Membranes And Quaternary Assembly Depend Upon Lipid Composition, Briana Vernon

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Dengue virus is a devastating human pathogen responsible for millions of infections each year. No antiviral therapies for Dengue currently exist, making effective treatment of the virus challenging. Dengue is taken into the cell through endocytosis. Low-pH mediated structural rearrangements of the envelope protein E leads to the formation of fusogenic E trimers that facilitate membrane fusion with late endosomes. The fusion mechanism is not fully understood, but poses as a key target for inhibiting the viral infection pathway. An important aspect of fusion is the requirement of anionic lipids in the endosomal membrane. This study aims to characterize the …

Am-Fm Analysis Of Structural And Functional Magnetic Resonance Images, Alvaro Emilio Ulloa Cerna

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis proposes the application of multi-dimensional Amplitude-Modulation Frequency-Modulation (AM-FM) methods to magnetic resonance images (MRI). The basic goal is to provide a framework for exploring non-stationary characteristics of structural and functional MRI (sMRI and fMRI). First, we provide a comparison framework for the most popular AM-FM methods using different filterbank configurations that includes Gabor, Equirriple and multi-scale directional designs. We compare the performance and robustness to Gaussian noise using synthetic FM image examples. We show that the multi-dimensional quasi-local method (QLM) with an equiripple filterbank gave the best results in terms of instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation. We then apply …

Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter Jul 2013

Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter

Psychology ETDs

It has been well-established that sustained attention and executive functioning are core deficits in schizophrenia (SZ). Growing evidence suggests that such attentional impairments may reflect disruptions in dominant intrinsic networks (INs). Functional network connectivity (FNC), described as the dependency between multiple INs, has revealed dysfunction among key INs in people with SZ. The objective of the current study was to test the hypothesis that SCZ would exhibit less specialized cognitive processing and therefore decreased FNC between dominant INs, and that any disruptions in FNC would predict neuropsychological profiles of attention. Methods: Thirty-five patients with SZ and thirty-three healthy controls (HC) …
