Economic Inequality In Kathmandu: A Multi-Indicator Perspective, Udaya R. Wagle

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Studying economic inequality is increasingly important because of its multidimensional effects on human and societal well-being. This paper examines economic inequality in Kathmandu using wealth, income, and consumption as its indicators. Amidst the finding that wealth, income, and consumption have mutually reinforcing relationships, recent survey data indicate that high income many not necessarily accumulate into wealth as normally expected. Data also show that the household and householder characteristics somewhat differ when it comes to explaining disparities in household wealth, income, and consumption. Abstract: Context: Mexican morbidity has drastically changed towards chronico-degenerative diseases. Currently obesity affects 30% of the population. Taking advantage of available assets a student team implemented an obesity program in a small healthcare center. Objectives: To create an accessible health education program to the community served. To decrease the weight of participants by 5%. Establish a comprehensive and lasting educational program. Design: Random users of the health center were invited. Weekly sessions were imparted for a four-month period (August-December: phase 1, January-June: phase 2). Courses included essentials on nutrition, chronic degenerative diseases, self-esteem, and physical activity. Participants' full medical history …

I invite you to read this report Contract & Grant Awards, fiscal year 2006, which lists contract and grant (C&G) awards received by the University of New Mexico (UNM) during the period from July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006 (FY06). These awards represent new funds that were acquired during FY06 by the main campus, branch campuses and education centers, and the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The HSC includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy. The awards received for FY06 total $298.6M, of which $165.4M is attributed to the main campus and $133.2M to HSC. …
