I invite you to read this report Contract & Grant Awards, fiscal year 2005, which lists contract and grant (C&G) awards received by the University of New Mexico (UNM) during the period from July 1, 2004 - June 30, 2005 (FY05). These awards represent new funds that were acquired during FY05 by the main campus, branch campuses and education centers, and the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The HSC includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy. The awards received for FY05 total $295.4M, of which $167.6M is attributed to the main campus and $127.8M to HSC. …

Faculty Scholarship
This white paper describes briefly the remarkable journey of community-based environmental justice advocates over the last 15 years and their impact on environmental regulation. It will also describe some of the empirical evidence of disparities and the regulatory dynamics that make these inequities an intractable problem, despite the collective efforts of grassroots leaders, environmental justice organizations, public interest law firms, and governmental officials. The paper then focuses on one important set of issues that must be tackled in order to achieve environmental justice: those involving injustice in risk regulation. From 1997 to 2005, the Navajo Youth Risk Behavior Surveilance System (YRBS) was implemented to be used to monitor health-risk behaviors among youth in middle and high schools. Unhealthy risk behaviors can lead to unhealthy health conditions or injuries, and could enventually lead to health or social problems as chronic diseases, disability and drug or alcohol addictions.

Federal Legislation: TITLE X--Snake River Water Rights Act of 2004, Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 PL 108-447, 118 Stat. 2809 (Dec. 8, 2004). Parties: Nez Perce Tribe, US, ID. The Agreement or "Mediator's Term Sheet" was entered in on April 20, 2004 and resolves the Nez Perce Tribe's water rights claimed in the Snake River Basin adjudication in Idaho.

A Fickle Thermometer Of Womens Health: Carioca Medical Professionals And Gynecology, 1836-1842', Suzanne M. Schadl

In English: This essay examines how medical professionals in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1830s relied on language and historical representation to further inscribe gendered, racial, and class distinctions that enabled a select group of men to make women and their personal hygiene objects of study. Medical writers combined experimental studies of race, class, and ethnicity with historical discussions of gender to form and present rhetorical differences in scientific terms. Though many of these professionals themselves as objective, they used linguistic tools to investigate and to prove or disprove their hypotheses, always drawing also from cultural myths, in this …

This study enhances the research done in a January 2004 study by the same author on the economic impact of the University of New Mexico on the New Mexico economy that included an analysis of the commercialization of technology and economic development in high-tech industries. This study examines the Science & Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of the University of New Mexico, and its role in fostering high-tech start-up companies since 1997.
