Adding Debriefing To Objective Structured Clinical Examinations To Enhance Disability Cultural Sensitivity In Pharmacy Students, Mark Smith Jun 2016

Adding Debriefing To Objective Structured Clinical Examinations To Enhance Disability Cultural Sensitivity In Pharmacy Students, Mark Smith

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Debriefing was added to the design of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) after second-year pharmacy students performed poorly at considering patient disability in planning for patient care. This mixed-methods study examines secondary data to explore whether and how the addition of a debriefing to an OSCE impacted pharmacy students' cultural sensitivity (CS). CS scores that rate students' consideration of disability in written SOAP notes improved significantly with the addition of debriefing. Overall performance of assessing the case and planning for care did not change significantly. Debriefing transcripts were examined for supplemental instruction they afforded students about patient care and …

Movement As The Driving Force: Empowering Live Dance Performance Through The Integration Of Film, Kelsey Victoria Mary Paschich

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Dance and film are two distinct mediums of expression. Movement drives both of these art forms and is the commonality that serves as the thread that connects them. These mediums serve as modes of discovery, thinking, and representation. Time and space are shared components between dance and film. Over the past century, there have been many different relationships on and off the stage between the two and as a result of this, new genres like screendance, dance for film, and multimedia performance have emerged. Live dance performance has been strengthened by the possibilities and uses of multimedia elements in real …

Differential Interactions Of Lipopolysaccharides With Lipid Bilayers: Applications For Pathogen Detection, Loreen R. Stromberg Jun 2016

Differential Interactions Of Lipopolysaccharides With Lipid Bilayers: Applications For Pathogen Detection, Loreen R. Stromberg

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

This dissertation describes the development of new tailored methods for the discriminative detection of amphiphilic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens, so as to improve screening methodologies for food-safety applications, and detection of amphiphiles in general. LPS is associated with the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, and is a primary virulence biomarker of several pathogens. Direct detection of amphiphilic LPS in the aqueous matrices of the host/sample requires an appreciation of the complex biochemistry of the molecule, and forms the basis for this research. The unique structure of this molecule can be used for identification of both the serogroup and strain of pathogen. …

Catalyst Layer Design In Polymer Membrane Fuel Cells, Sarah Stariha Jun 2016

Catalyst Layer Design In Polymer Membrane Fuel Cells, Sarah Stariha

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

One of the biggest obstacles to commercializing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is the use of platinum as a catalyst. One way to overcome this obstacle is to replace platinum with non-platinum group metal (non-PGM) catalysts, particularly for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The most realistic method of estimating the performance of non-PGM catalysts is testing within membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). One key issue is that non-PGM catalysts are not as active as platinum. One way to increase their performance is to optimize the catalyst layer composition, specifically the components responsible for ionic …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between grit and student-athlete academic and sport performance. An exploratory study was conducted using a case study methodology, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research. The Grit Short Scale (Duckworth, 2007) was employed on student-athletes at an NCAA Division II university in the American Southwest Rocky Mountain Region. Results included a positive correlation between student-athlete grit level and informant grit report, indicating that student-athlete consistently rated their grit higher than their coach rated their grit. Also, in this case study, grit does not account for more predictive value of college academic …

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield Jun 2016

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield

History ETDs

This project aims to explain how the contemporary Tule Lake Committee commemorates and honors the Japanese Americans who found themselves incarcerated at the Tule Lake Segregation Center in northern California after 'failing' the loyalty questionnaire administered to them by the War Relocation Authority during World War II. The Tule Lake Committee holds biennial pilgrimages which have become increasingly popular in the last decade. A 'thick description' of the 2010 pilgrimage and an analysis of the pilgrimage themes shows how the Tule Lake Committee honors the experience of Japanese Americans whose history was written out of the collective memory in the …

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester Jun 2016

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester

History ETDs

This dissertation investigates the Franco dictatorships construction of normative masculinity through mandatory military service in Spain from 1939—1975. As part of the regime's efforts to normalize its version of Spanish nationalism, it institutionalized a militarized masculinity in the armed forces. For its sources, the project employs military publications such as autobiographies, journals, training manuals, and magazines as well as courts-martial, service records, and military statistics. Using this rich variety of evidence, the study demonstrates that a gendered conception of the soldier occupied a privileged position in the solidification of the Franco regime's power, the intended moral regeneration of Spanish society, …

The Framework For Information Literacy: Academic Librarians' Perceptions Of Its Potential Impact On Higher Education Library Praxes, Patrick Keller Jun 2016

The Framework For Information Literacy: Academic Librarians' Perceptions Of Its Potential Impact On Higher Education Library Praxes, Patrick Keller

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

"The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education ("the Framework") may serve to influence academic library praxes. A total of 138 academic librarian participants were randomly selected (32 deans and 106 non-deans) from public and private institutions. The institutions spanned across six accrediting regions recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Participants completed a 22-item survey designed to elicit their perceptions of the Framework's impact. Professional position (deans or non-deans) was significantly correlated with the perceived level of impact that the Framework might have on library praxes. That is, deans tended to rate the Framework at a higher level …

Sub-Nanosecond Uv Filaments And Their Applications For Remote Spectroscopy And High-Voltage Discharges, Chengyong Feng Jun 2016

Sub-Nanosecond Uv Filaments And Their Applications For Remote Spectroscopy And High-Voltage Discharges, Chengyong Feng

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Intensive investigations during the past two decades have focused on potential applications of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond filament for remote spectroscopy. The short length (less than 1 m) and low energy (only several millijoule) of a single NIR filament limit these applications. Long-pulse UV filaments have therefore been proposed at UNM to overcome such limitations. This dissertation describes our investigation and optimization of the high-power UV source, focusing on details of the generation and characterization of the generated pulses, as well as the applications of UV filaments for remote sensing and high-voltage discharge. On the topic of pulse generation, a 266 …

Polarization Characterization Of Nonlinear Laser Propagation, Shermineh Rostami Jun 2016

Polarization Characterization Of Nonlinear Laser Propagation, Shermineh Rostami

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

High power laser pulses propagate nonlinearly in media transparent to their wavelength. Self-induced nonlinearities lead to strong modifications of the spatial, spectral as well as temporal characteristics of the pulse. The interaction of the high power laser pulses with the propagation medium leads to partial ionization of the latter. This highly complex and dynamic nonlinear process, induced by the high power laser pulses, with a narrow high intensity core that is maintained over long distances is known as "filamentation". Filaments created from a linearly polarized electric field have been studied by different research groups. However, it is interesting to know …

Becoming Gay: The Formation And Meaning Of Lgbt Political Identity, Kimberly Proctor Jun 2016

Becoming Gay: The Formation And Meaning Of Lgbt Political Identity, Kimberly Proctor

Political Science ETDs

Data suggest that there are at least 11 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the United States. Further, evidence demonstrates that there is a sexuality gap' (Hertzog 1996) in American politics with LGBTs out-participating their heterosexual peers and gay politics dominating political media. However, scholars remain unable to explain why LGBT political identity forms or how this identity matters for political behavior. This dissertation examines the political foundations of LGBT identity and argues that discrimination, engagement in group-specific public spaces, and the influence of the Religious Right have fostered the development of group consciousness in gay Americans. …

Which Policies Are Rewarded: Explaining The Distribution Of U.S. Foreign Aid After The End Of The Cold War, Yury V. Bosin Jun 2016

Which Policies Are Rewarded: Explaining The Distribution Of U.S. Foreign Aid After The End Of The Cold War, Yury V. Bosin

Political Science ETDs

The goal of this study is to elucidate what drives the distribution of U.S. foreign assistance. Why do some states receive more than others? Does the U.S. use aid to reward certain good' policies? Can a regime pursue such policies to secure more U.S. funding? I answer these questions by examining patterns of aid distribution of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. I find that USAID assistance is driven primarily by strategic interests, while the MCC is more oriented towards the recipient needs. To assess the effects of various democratic policies on the distribution of …

The Effect Of Relative Electrode Size On The Performance Of A Supercapacitive Microbial Fuel Cell Design, Jeremiah Houghton Jun 2016

The Effect Of Relative Electrode Size On The Performance Of A Supercapacitive Microbial Fuel Cell Design, Jeremiah Houghton

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Supercapacitive microbial fuel cells with various anode and cathode dimensions were investigated in order to determine the effect on capacitance and delivered power quality. The cathode size was determined to be the limiting component of the system, while anode size showed little effect on the devices performance. By doubling the cathode area, peak power output was improved by roughly 120% for a 10 ms pulse discharge. Doubling the cathode area also had a positive effect on the internal resistance of the cell, lowering the equivalent series resistance by approximately 47%. Doubling the anode area increased peak power output slightly, with …
