Evidence-Based Cybersecurity: Data-Driven And Abstract Models, Benjamin Edwards May 2016

Evidence-Based Cybersecurity: Data-Driven And Abstract Models, Benjamin Edwards

Computer Science ETDs

Achieving computer security requires both rigorous empirical measurement and models to understand cybersecurity phenomena and the effectiveness of defenses and interventions. To address the growing scale of cyber-insecurity, my approach to protecting users employs principled and rigorous measurements and models. In this dissertation, I examine four cybersecurity phenomena. I show that data-driven and abstract modeling can reveal surprising conclusions about longterm, persistent problems, like spam and malware, and growing threats like data-breaches and cyber conflict. I present two data-driven statistical models and two abstract models. Both of the data-driven models show that the presence of heavy-tailed distributions can make naive …

Legacy Mining Metal Exposures Contribute To Circulating Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein And Serum Inflammatory Potential In A Native Community, Molly E. Harmon May 2016

Legacy Mining Metal Exposures Contribute To Circulating Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein And Serum Inflammatory Potential In A Native Community, Molly E. Harmon

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Numerous abandoned uranium mines (AUM) within the Navajo Nation contribute uranium (U), arsenic (As) and other metals to the soil, air and groundwater that continue to pose potential health risks to Navajo residents. The prevalence of inflammatory-related cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) has increased among the Navajo community in recent decades. Environmental exposure to metal contaminants may alter the circulation in ways that are associated with the inflammation-driven process of atherosclerotic plaque formation. Thus, we hypothesize that exposures to AUM metal contaminants are associated with pro-atherogenic changes in the circulation as evidenced by increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) …

Experimental Verification Of The Concept Of The Relativistic Magnetron With Simple Mode Converter, Jeremy Mcconaha May 2016

Experimental Verification Of The Concept Of The Relativistic Magnetron With Simple Mode Converter, Jeremy Mcconaha

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A compact A6 relativistic magnetron with a simple mode converter for axial TE_11-mode extraction was recently designed at the University of New Mexico. With the standard A6 magnetron operating in the -mode it is possible to implement a simple mode converter to radiate a TE_11-mode axially through a cylindrical waveguide whose radius is the same as the anode cavity radius. The proposed mode converter implements an anode end cap that electrically opens diametrically opposite cavities that produce an electric field polarization corresponding to that of the of the TE_11-mode in a cylindrical waveguide. The TE_11-mode has a Gaussian-like profile with …

Refocusing The Frontier: Recalling The Photography Of Robert Adams And Mark Klett, Christian W. Olsson May 2016

Refocusing The Frontier: Recalling The Photography Of Robert Adams And Mark Klett, Christian W. Olsson

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis argues that the American West is a melting pot unprecedented by anything else in the North American continent. The natural beauty observed by the nineteenth-century photographers still prevails. The land is shaped not only by new peoples and cultures, and by those already inhabiting the land, but also by political ideas about how the land should be used. The works of Robert Adams and Mark Klett examine these agendas through their respective works. They illustrate ideas of how the land should be used--from national parks, to cities, to energy and environmental projects. Both photographers focus on different areas …

Biomolecular Signatures Of Severe Malarial Anemia, Zachary Shamin Karim May 2016

Biomolecular Signatures Of Severe Malarial Anemia, Zachary Shamin Karim

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Plasmodium falciparum-associated severe malarial anemia [SMA, hemoglobin (Hb)< 5.0g/dL] is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in African children. Examination of the host immune response and underlying genotypic traits that condition SMA can offer an improved understanding of malaria pathogenesis. Previous investigations have suggested that SMA in high transmission regions is due to impaired erythropoiesis hemolysis and erythrocyte destruction. In the holoendemic transmission region of western Kenya our studies have shown that dyserythropoiesis drives and conditions SMA through poorly understood molecular pathways. Pediatric studies have shown that early erythroid cell populations as well as reticulocyte production is greatly reduced in children with SMA. The driving force of malaria pathogenesis is multifaceted and the mechanisms that promote erythropoietic dysfunction are still being understood. We hypothesize that SMA is conditioned by the immune response through underlying genetic factors that influence erythropoiesis resulting in a exacerbated disease state. To that end the studies described in this manuscript focus on the inflammatory chemokines, monokine induced by gamma (MIG) and interferon gamma-induced protein (IP10) as well as the hemoglobin-coding gene, hemoglobin alpha 2 (HBA2) in the context of SMA and dyserythropoiesis. The first study described herein, identified MIG and IP10 as important mediators associated with SMA. In this study we examined circulating MIG and I10 profiles in non-SMA and SMA children and then genotyped and constructed haplotypes between 5 individual polymorphic variants within the promoter regions for the MIG and IP10 for the entire study cohort (n=1,600). The second study described in this manuscript, utilized a global approach where genome wide association studies as well as whole-genome transcriptomics identified novel molecular pathways between non-SMA and SMA children. These analyses revealed that the expression of the hemoglobin-coding gene, HBA2 is significantly modulated between populations. We then examined these findings closer and genotyped a larger population for 2 promoter variants with the same approach described in the first study. Regression analysis of genotype and haplotype data for both studies revealed significant findings where several variant haplotypes correlated with SMA outcomes and erythropoietic response. Lastly, we used an in vitro model of erythropoiesis to determine if recombinant human MIG and IP10 as well as pediatric study serum (non-SMA and SMA) influence erythroid function. Our results from these studies revealed that pediatric serum from children with SMA influenced cell viability as well as erythroid lineage when we examined cell surface erythroid markers. A similar result was also seen in cell populations that were treated with the inflammatory mediators, MIG, and IP10 which reflected our proposal that serum from children with SMA and inflammatory mediators (MIG and IP10) infringe upon erythroid cell maturation and viability in vivo. Together the results from these studies independently verify the influence of biomolecular markers and mediators on SMA outcomes.

Responding To The Storyworld Of The Hunger Games Through A Fan Fiction Fandom, Misty Nichole Horning May 2016

Responding To The Storyworld Of The Hunger Games Through A Fan Fiction Fandom, Misty Nichole Horning

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Many reader response theorists have researched how readers respond to literature; however, my dissertation addresses the question of what the nature of fan fiction responses is in relation to the storyworld of The Hunger Games, based solely on the responses themselves, independent of the writer. Employing Henry Jenkins's "Ten Ways to Rewrite a Television Show" as a framework for analyzing how these writers enter into the storyworld, I explore fifteen fan fiction stories utilizing a textual analysis methodology. My findings support the argument that these writings are to be valued as tangible examples of what Louise Rosenblatt terms as an …

Inhaled Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Systemic Inflammation And Endothelial Dysfunction Via Mmp-9 Induction, Mario Aragon May 2016

Inhaled Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Systemic Inflammation And Endothelial Dysfunction Via Mmp-9 Induction, Mario Aragon

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Assessing the mechanisms underlying adverse cardiovascular effects induced by inhaled toxins presents a substantial research challenge. We propose that blood carries an as yet unknown "inflammatory potential" consisting of modified proteins or other biomolecules and reaction byproducts that affects a pathological bioactivity which can be assessed using naïve endothelial cells and blood vessels. The approach involves applying serum from exposed animals to cultured primary endothelial cells or ex vivo isolated arteries. Mice were exposed to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT; 0, 10 or 40 μg) or other pollutants via pharyngeal aspiration and serum was collected at 4 and 24 h post-exposure. …

Critical Discourse Analysis Of Colombian Identities And Humanature In National Geographic Magazine (1903-1952), Mónica Pérez-Marín May 2016

Critical Discourse Analysis Of Colombian Identities And Humanature In National Geographic Magazine (1903-1952), Mónica Pérez-Marín

Communication ETDs

The main purpose of this dissertation is to challenge assumptions of neutrality and objectivity in popular science journalism by investigating how representations of Colombian identities and humanature in National Geographic Magazine between 1903 and 1952 create social knowledge and power in the context of the U.S.-Colombia relations. The investigation is based on the analysis of nine in-depth articles, including 214 pages of written text, 200 photos, and 6 maps. I applied two methods of analysis: critical discourse analysis and visual rhetoric. The discussion of discursive practices, textual structures, and social practices was organized chronologically into three significant periods and related …

Hope As Reclaiming Narrative Agency: The Communication Processes Facilitating Hope At A Community-Based Support Program, Laura L. Burton

Communication ETDs

This study, using interviews and in situ group observations, explored the communication processes that facilitate the emergence of hope at a community based support program (CBSP). No literature within the communication field focuses on hope and there are no studies that explore the co-construction of hope through communication. Within the extensive studies of hope in other disciplines, the communication lens is absent. Within the literature of wellness, positive and supportive communication, narrative, and mutual aid groups, there are no studies that focus on emergent hope or the communication processes facilitating hope. Hope is widely accepted as critical to life and …

Artifacts Of Representation: The Makings Of Indigeneity In Argentine Museums, Amy Kathleen Sartor May 2016

Artifacts Of Representation: The Makings Of Indigeneity In Argentine Museums, Amy Kathleen Sartor

Anthropology ETDs

Museums are an integral part of a nation's identity formation - showcasing to national and international visitors what it means to be part of that nation. In Argentina, where national identity is tied to deep colonial roots, indigenous contributions in museums are often essentialized into a form that can easily be absorbed and appropriated by non-indigenous Argentines, as part of a legacy of an ethnic past. For my research, I visited museums in Argentina and cataloged how indigenous people were represented in order to analyze Argentina's interactions with the indigenous people that are often believed not to exist. My thesis …

Supreme Court Brief Interviews Creel, Barbara L. Creel Apr 2016

Supreme Court Brief Interviews Creel, Barbara L. Creel

Faculty Scholarship

If tribal courts provided competent counsel to indigent Indian defendants, Creel said, "Then I would say, 'Prosecute all day long.' But [federal prosecutors] are trying to short-circuit that. They're saying because we have this epidemic, let's make it easier for everyone involved. That's against constitutional values and tribal values."

Creel asks the justices to hold that all persons facing incarceration must have the same protections in place. "That wouldn't apply the Constitution to tribes but it would disallow federal prosecutors from using uncounseled convictions."
