Governing Conservation Beyond The Rules: Bureaucratic Discretion In Indonesia, Dedy Asriady, Muh. Ilham Nasir, Emban Ibnurusyd Mas'ud, Supratman Supratman, Syamsu Alam, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide
Hasanuddin Law Review
Conservation governance is frequently characterized as a rule-based system in which bureaucratic actors enforce standardized regulations to protect biodiversity. In practice, however, conservation policies are implemented within socially contested landscapes. Strict regulatory enforcement may generate conflict and undermine governance objectives. Although public administration research underscores the importance of bureaucratic discretion in policy implementation, limited attention has been paid to its influence on environmental governance in developing countries. This article investigates discretionary practices in Indonesian conservation area management using an ethnographic approach that incorporates interviews, field observations, and case studies across multiple sites. The findings demonstrate that discretion occupies a central, …
Postsecondary Experiences And Impact On Career Choices And Employment Status For Cisgender Women With Autism, Maureen Bell
Postsecondary Experiences And Impact On Career Choices And Employment Status For Cisgender Women With Autism, Maureen Bell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cisgender women with autism remain underrepresented in research on postsecondary education and career development despite experiencing distinct barriers within these systems. This qualitative study examined how cisgender women with autism perceived the impact of their postsecondary education experiences on career choices and employment navigation. Guided by the social model of disability and intersectionality theory, nine postsecondary participants formally diagnosed with autism and who self-identified as cisgender completed semistructured interviews exploring their educational and employment experiences. Thematic analysis identified seven interconnected themes. Findings indicated that academic success often masked significant internal distress, suggesting that performance did not reflect accessible environments. Participants …

Arterial Architecture Of The Goat Spleen (Capra Hircus) Revealed By Corrosion Casting And Scanning Electron Microscopy, Baran Erdem, Sevi̇nç Ateş, Meryem Karan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The spleen is an essential organ involved in hematopoietic and immune functions. A comprehensive understanding of its anatomy, including vascular topography and segmentation, is essential for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of splenic diseases, and the minimization of complications during surgical procedures. Detailed knowledge of the vascular architecture also supports the accurate prediction and management of hemorrhage severity in cases of splenic rupture. The spleen’s microvascular system has a unique and complex organization that is distinct from other organs, and its elucidation is critical for understanding splenic function. In the present study, the spleens of 20 hair goats were examined. …
Deciphering The Rules Of Odor-Driven Learning In The Fruit Fly Olfactory System, Cole B. Hanan
Deciphering The Rules Of Odor-Driven Learning In The Fruit Fly Olfactory System, Cole B. Hanan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Odorant identity is encoded by patterns of activity across olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) and their corresponding glomeruli in the antennal lobe (AL). An odorant's valence can be modified by experience, allowing animals to associate previously neutral odors with appetitive or aversive outcomes. However, some odors appear resistant to such reassignment, and the factors determining whether an odor can acquire learned valence and whether that association generalizes to chemically related odors remain poorly understood. This thesis uses Drosophila melanogaster to address this question using a fully automated proboscis extension reflex (PER) conditioning assay. Odorants are presented via a computer-controlled olfactometer, reward …

This article presents the Russian Language-Monolingual corpus (RusLan-M, v.1.0), a longitudinal multimedia collection of early child speech from two Russian-speaking monolingual children: Tosya (ages 0;10–3;10, 246 recordings) and Yasha (ages 1;04–3;00, 42 recordings). The corpus consists of approximately 41 h (2,454 min.) of video recordings and 35,386 child utterances, available with transcriptions in the CHAT format on TalkBank. The corpus adheres to strict ethics requirements for data sharing with anonymization. We also conducted two exploratory investigations of the acquisition of Russian morphology using the mean length of utterance (MLU) and the newly developed Index of Productive Syntax for evaluating grammatical …

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) features episodic shifts among mania, hypomania, depression, mixed states, and euthymia. Timely detection of mood transitions is difficult due to infrequent clinical touchpoints. Digital health technologies, including wearables and smartphones, offer a unique opportunity to passively and continuously monitor behavior and physiology that could reflect underlying mood dynamics in real-world settings.
Objective: This study aimed to systematically review passively collected digital markers for BD mood states, characterize devices/modalities and analytic approaches, appraise risk of bias, and identify design gaps and priorities for clinical translation.
Methods: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) …
The Freedom Myth: How Ski Culture's Hidden Conformity Reveals The Unconscious Power Of Brand Belonging, Isabel R. Phillips
The Freedom Myth: How Ski Culture's Hidden Conformity Reveals The Unconscious Power Of Brand Belonging, Isabel R. Phillips
University Honors Theses
Purpose: Ski culture sells freedom and enforces conformity. This review asks what unconscious behavioral patterns hold that contradiction in place, and how brands capitalize on it to manufacture belonging.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A narrative literature review across consumer psychology, behavioral neuroscience, sociology, and ski industry research. No primary data were collected. Four accounts of consistency-seeking are synthesized into one framework, then applied to three ski industry cases at ascending scales and tested against a comparative case from Spanish football.
Findings: Belonging is a conditioned response, and conditioning requires a stable stimulus. Consistency is therefore the precondition of belonging rather than a constraint …
Fredric Jameson In Asia: Interpreting Korean Gothic Through Haunted Modernity, Eugene Kim
Fredric Jameson In Asia: Interpreting Korean Gothic Through Haunted Modernity, Eugene Kim
Kritika Kultura
Asian Gothic, particularly in its Korean manifestation, both embodies and unsettles postmodernism as theorized by Fredric Jameson. While sharing postmodern characteristics such as fragmented temporality and commodification, Korean Gothic resists being dismissed as pastiche by demonstrating historical trauma, the grotesque, and forms of the sublime that revise Western-centered accounts of postmodernity. This article engages with Park Chan-kyong’s concept of “Asian Gothic” and uses Goedam as a popular cultural example. It argues that Korean Gothic functions as an aesthetic response to compressed modernity, generating a horizontal sublime through the interplay of terror, spiritual affect, and non-linear temporalities.

Non-Violent Re-Articulation Of Masculinities: Art, Youths, And Peace Preservation In Post-Conflict Ambon Island, Wening Udasmoro, Leo Marai, Russell Soaba, Philip Aratiso, Jemmy Talakua
Kritika Kultura
Art as a mechanism for fostering peace in conflict resolution and peace maintenance can be found in different social experiences. The Ambon conflict that occurred in 1999 following the fall of Indonesia’s New Order government ended in 2002, but the potential for inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflicts is still a concern for many members of the Ambon community in Maluku Province. In an effort to maintain peace, various elements of the Ambon society continuously engage themselves in various activities to preserve peace. One consistent element in these peace preservation efforts is the youth of Ambon, who employ art as a means …

Between Spectacle And Struggle: Representations Of The Sea In Indonesian Popular Visual Culture, Susanne A. H. Sitohang, Teguh Prasetyo
Kritika Kultura
Indonesia is a maritime nation, consisting of 17,500 islands—one-third of its geographical area is ocean. Thus, Indonesia declares its identity as an archipelagic nation and actively promotes the geographical facts mentioned above as maritime nationalism. However, the sea remains “secondary” compared to the land and it is frequently misrepresented in Indonesian popular visual culture. This article offers an analysis on how the sea is constructed across three popular visual texts, namely Wonderland Indonesia, a music video series produced by Alffy Rev; the film Budi Pekerti (2023); and The Bajau, a documentary, produced by Watchdoc. The analysis draws on Stuart Hall’s …

Building Ties, Connecting Islands: Api Kartini's Longing For An Affective Community During The Cold War, Asri Saraswati
Kritika Kultura
This article discusses the inter-class and cross-oceanic ties envisioned by socialist women’s organization Gerakan Wanita Indonesia (Indonesian Women Movement or Gerwani) through an analysis of their magazine, Api Kartini (AK). The magazine published fiction and non-fiction writings that reveal their affective impulse to build connection as they shared their observations of the women’s movement and labor in Indonesia and abroad. The magazine addressed middle-class women and wives, connecting them emotionally with women of the working class and women organizations across the oceans in their rejection to colonialism and feudalism and their fight for equal rights. This article aims to understand …

Island As Mechanism: Island Narrative And Affective Landscapes In Ng Kim Chew’S “Fish Bones” And “Allah’S Will”, Chi Miao, Shu Li
Kritika Kultura
This article reframes Sinophone Malaysian (Mahua) literature through the perspective of island studies, foregrounding Malaysia’s cross-island configuration. We propose negative islandness as an operational category: a structurally produced negative affect of suspension, deferral, and dread generated by the island–sea regime’s simultaneous openness and boundedness. We argue that, in Ng Kim Chew’s “Fish Bones” and “Allah’s Will,” the island operates as a mechanism that interstitializes perspectives and tidalizes narrative time, thereby converting arrival into an unfinished passage and relocating trauma into embodied, material rhythms. Through close readings, we develop two interrelated strands: First, an interstitial perspective with the temporality of tides …

Neoliberal Postmodernism, The Cultural Logic Of Buji’S Storytime: A Case Study On The Political Economy Of The Commodified Influencer, Ma. Rosa Cer Bragais
Kritika Kultura
With the ubiquity of social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, influencers or “digital content creators” have taken current Filipino popular culture by storm, spurring an enormous volume of discourse and becoming trendsetters and role models. This paper focuses on the case of professional influencer Buji Babiera, a bicycle advocate turned storyteller who shares random narratives, such as urban legends and slice-of-life anecdotes, on his main platform Storytime on TikTok. I sought to answer how underlying neoliberal political economic structures, as embedded in Storytime’s production processes, relate with the distinctively postmodern character of its content. Guided by Marxist political economy …

Tally’S Spatial Criticism: Following Jameson And Going Beyond, Ying Fang
Kritika Kultura
As a celebrated Marxist literary theorist and cultural critic, Fredric Jameson has been very influential and highly acclaimed in China’s academia for about forty years. One of his former undergraduate students, Robert T. Tally Jr., is now widely regarded as an inheritor of Jameson’s thoughts as well as his impact on China’s literary studies. Tally is especially valued for his spatial criticism, which, characterized by its distinct terminology and methodologies, builds upon Jameson’s intellectual legacy while also significantly moving beyond it. In the first place, Tally’s notion of space inherits Jameson’s view of history and space while also drawing on …
Reconfiguring "National Allegory" In A Critique Of The Philippine Neocolonial Experience, Epifanio San Juan Jr.
Reconfiguring "National Allegory" In A Critique Of The Philippine Neocolonial Experience, Epifanio San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
With appropriate adjustments, Jameson’s theory of national allegory can serve as a serviceable frame to interpret Filipino texts. Allegory as figuration or image-thinking aims to resolve conceptual blockage or theoretical dead-ends. Analyzing an exemplary story by Lualhati Bautista, this essay seeks to demonstrate how the author’s mode of representation captures the effect of combining feudal-archaic and capitalist modes of production in the lives of typical characters. Private thoughts and feelings conflict with public norms in the predicament of two uprooted protagonists caught in the crisis of a disaggregated polity. The Philippine social formation as a dependent entity exemplifies the mix …

The Reception Of Jameson’S Works In China, South Korea, And Japan, Mingming Li
Kritika Kultura
An examination of data from the academic databases CNKI, DBpia, and CiNii indicates that the reception of Fredric Jameson’s works in China, South Korea, and Japan can be traced back to the early 1980s. Shaped by their distinct historical and political contexts, each country has developed its own academic discourse surrounding Jameson’s theories. In China, Jameson’s intellectual presence began in 1986, marked by Tang Xiaobing’s article “Postmodernism: Commodification and Cultural Expansion—An Interview with Fredric Jameson.” Since then, over 1,100 research documents on Jameson have been published in China, covering a wide array of topics such as Marxism, postmodernism, globalization, and …
Why National Allegory Stopped Its Vacation In Turkey?, Koray Kırmızısakal
Why National Allegory Stopped Its Vacation In Turkey?, Koray Kırmızısakal
Kritika Kultura
This article re-examines the Turkish reception of Fredric Jameson’s essay “Third-World Literature in the Era of Multinational Capitalism” through the lens of Aijaz Ahmad’s influential critique, which has shaped the readings of Murat Belge, Ahmet Oktay, Nurdan Gürbilek, Meltem Gürle, and Besim Dellaloğlu. These critics, following Ahmad, have charged Jameson with advancing a reductionist and at times Orientalist/Eurocentric view by claiming that the Third World (now the Global South) is structurally compelled to produce national allegories. Ahmad’s objection that the Third World cannot be reduced to a single form such as national allegory ultimately misreads Jameson’s broader theoretical engagement with …

The Violence Of Abstraction: Fredric Jameson, The “Asiatic Mode,” And The Problem Of Asia, Maria Luisa Torres Reyes, Alex Taek-Gwang Lee
Kritika Kultura
This forum introduction revisits Fredric Jameson’s engagement with Asia by focusing on a central tension in his work: the productive power of his world-historical method and the limitations of its reliance on the typological figure of the “Asiatic mode of production.” Rather than treating this tension as grounds for either dismissal or recuperation, the essay argues that Jameson’s categories become most useful precisely at the point where they encounter their limits, opening the possibility for alternative modes of theoretical practice. It proposes refunctioning and provincializing as complementary methodologies through which inherited concepts are displaced, reworked, and renewed in relation to …

Softness And Kung Fu: Masculinities Of Chinese Heroes In American Graphic Novels, Lian Xu
Kritika Kultura
In American graphic novels such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Shadow Hero, and Kung Fu Panda, the depictions of Chinese heroes differ from those of Western heroic characters in mainstream American graphic narratives. These heroes embody a combination of soft masculinity and kung fu masculinity, creating a new type that might be called the “soft kung fu hero,” exemplifying what Kam Louie refers to as “wen wu shuang quan” (accomplished in both cultural attainment and martial prowess)—the ultimate ideal of Chinese masculinity. Although the appearances of the protagonists are quite different from typical kung fu masculine heroes such as …

Blue Humanities Currents: Ruth Ozeki’S A Tale For The Time Being And Kim Stanley Robinson’S New York 2140, Simon C. Estok
Kritika Kultura
Literary representations of ocean currents are important in a time such as ours when the patterns of the global water cycles are changing. Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being and Kim Stanley Robinson’s New York 2140 each, in different ways, imagine personal impacts of global water patterns. For Ozeki, the interconnections between oceanic and terrestrial processes manifest along the shores of the Pacific Northwest in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Japan. For Robinson, the changes in ocean currents are clearly an effect of climate change, and we witness a kind of …

Cultural competence and cultural awareness are terms that have started to become more widely used when discussing how therapists impact their clients. The push for cultural competence and awareness has started to create new questions about how a client’s culture can be intertwined with the services that they are receiving. The purpose of this study was to teach a combination of basic safety skills and identify if language impacted behavior. This study utilized one participant who did not acquire the skill to stop in either language. During the experiment, a third language was added to measure control; however, responding remained …
