The Mexican Energy Reform And Clean Energy: Lessons From The Swedish-Norwegian Scheme Of Clean Energy Certificates, Juan Andrés García Padrón
The Mexican Energy Reform And Clean Energy: Lessons From The Swedish-Norwegian Scheme Of Clean Energy Certificates, Juan Andrés García Padrón
Natural Resources Journal
The recent approval of a Clean Energy Certificates market in Mexico is part of the broad Energy Reform in the country since the end of 2013. Clean Energy Certificates create an incentive for new investment and a source of extra income for green energy producers in the electricity market. Mexico’s scheme is based on similar Green Trade Certificates schemes, which promote investment in renewable energy by setting quotas on electricity producers and requiring certain electricity users to buy certificates. This article briefly looks at the early adopters, Sweden and later Norway, where a similar scheme has been implemented since 2003. …

Characterization Of Consolidated Granular Salt, Melissa Marie Mills
Characterization Of Consolidated Granular Salt, Melissa Marie Mills
Civil Engineering ETDs
Granular salt is likely to be used as backfill material and a seal system component within geologic salt formations serving as a repository for long-term isolation of nuclear waste. Pressure from closure of the surrounding salt formation will promote consolidation of granular salt, eventually resulting in properties comparable to native salt. Understanding the consolidation processes dependence on stress state, moisture availability, and temperature is important for demonstrating sealing functions and long-term repository performance. This study includes the characterization of laboratory-consolidated salt by means of microstructural observations, measurement of physical properties related to the pore structure, and quantification of pore sizes …

Investigation Of Interfacial Interaction Of Manganese Oxides With Organic Micropollutants, Mohamed Nabil Shaikh
Civil Engineering ETDs
Water reuse has become a necessary practice in arid and semi-arid regions like the Southwestern USA. However, a new generation of emerging organic micropollutants has been increasingly scrutinized in water sources. The aim of this study is to determine the changes in chemical composition occurring on the MnOx(s) surface after reaction with organic micropollutants using X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and solution chemistry analyses. Laboratory batch experiments were conducted to assess the reactivity of MnOx(s) with aniline, triclosan, phenol and bisphenol A. Analyses of XPS high resolution scans through the determination of the shape and position of Mn 3p …
Language, Power, And Ideology In High School Efl Textbooks In Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Al Jumiah
Language, Power, And Ideology In High School Efl Textbooks In Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Al Jumiah
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a research method, I investigated in the present study the discursive intersections between language and ideology with respect to social power and identity in two high school English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) textbooks in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, I critically analyzed how social power and identity based on gender and race were discursively represented in these EFL textbooks. I also critically examined how banking education and neoliberalism as a western political and socioeconomic ideology shaped the content of these EFL textbooks. The results indicate that the overt and hidden discourses in the EFL textbooks I analyzed serve as …
Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Phononic Crystals In Macro And Micro Scale, Mohammadhosein Ghasemi Baboly
Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Phononic Crystals In Macro And Micro Scale, Mohammadhosein Ghasemi Baboly
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
In many areas of engineering such as telecommunications industry, lenses and optical cooling, waveguiding and the ability to control wave propagation is necessary. Phononic Crystals (PnCs) influence the propagation of mechanical waves by their periodic variation in elastic impedances. Depending on Lattice type and inclusion's spacing, one can manipulate the frequencies that are blocked or allowed to transmit through the crystal in a particular direction. In this work, two dimensional PnCs plates are design and also numerically and experimentally demonstrated. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to study the dispersion behavior and eigenmodes of a PnC. The simulations show the …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series
When our early UNM College of Nursing PhD students wrote Volumes 1-3 of this compilation a decade ago, our program was new and growing, and most of the students lived here in New Mexico or in neighboring states. Much has changed since the initial volumes emerged from our course entitled Rural and Cultural Health (Nursing 611), a graduate elective. The world has embraced enormous linkages through technology. Refugee and migration patterns the world over have more people displaced and seeking a permanent home than ever before. International, national, regional and local contexts, conflicts, politics, health-related policies, economic struggles, racial/ethnic diversity, …

Characterization Of Carrier Transport Properties In Strained Crystalline Si Wall-Like Structures As A Function Of Scaling Into The Quasi-Quantum Regime, Clay Mayberry
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
The transport characteristics of both electrons and holes through narrow constricted "wall-like" Silicon (Si) long-channels that were surrounded by a thermally grown SiO2 layer was investigated. As a result of the existence of fixed oxide charges in the thermally grown SiO2 layer and the Si/SiO2 interface, the effective Si cross-sectional wall widths were considerably narrower than the actual physical widths, due the formation of depletion regions from all sides. The physical height of the crystalline-Si structures was ~1500nm, and the widths were incrementally scaled down from ~200nm to ~20nm. These nanostructures were configured into a metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) device configuration that …
Whatever Happened To The Mexican Oil Bonanza? The Challenges Of Mexico’S New Oil Fund, Paul Alejandro Sánchez Campos
Whatever Happened To The Mexican Oil Bonanza? The Challenges Of Mexico’S New Oil Fund, Paul Alejandro Sánchez Campos
Natural Resources Journal
From 2000 to 2014, Mexico exported around 9 billion barrels of oil equivalent—representing approximately $562 billion dollars (USD) in revenues—yet in December 2014, the remnant sum in the Oil Revenues Stabilization Fund was just $2.9 billion USD. This article analyzes the Mexican oil revenue management scheme used in this period, using evidence to analyze various explanations of how the Mexican oil revenues were used between 2000 and 2014 and to evaluate the institutional strength of the new Mexican Oil Fund for facing challenges in the near future.
Shale Gas: Opportunities And Challenges Between Mexico And The United States, Mariana Y. Villanueva González
Shale Gas: Opportunities And Challenges Between Mexico And The United States, Mariana Y. Villanueva González
Natural Resources Journal
Would it be it better for Mexico to remain a net importing partner of natural gas from the United States or to encourage its own Mexican Gas Revolution? Mexico has an estimate 545 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of shale natural gas reserves, and trillions of additional cubic feet of conventional reserves. Nevertheless, the country has remained a net importer of natural gas due to underdevelopment. Meanwhile, shale gas production on the other side of the border has increased significantly over the past decade, causing United States gas prices to drop. Due to its close proximity to the major shale field …

Mexican Energy Reform, Climate Change, And Energy Justice In Indigenous Communities, Shalanda H. Baker
Natural Resources Journal
Mexico’s recent energy reform portends a new era of private engagement in the oil and gas sectors. According to government officials and industry leaders, the opening of energy reserves for private development will spur economic growth and establish the country as a leader in the energy arena. This article examines whether the reforms could also lead to community-led growth in the renewable energy sector, specifically in Oaxaca, Mexico, which has been identified as one of the windiest places in the world and is currently already the site of extensive wind energy development. Building on my prior work exploring the impact …

Co2 Flux Along Faults Of The Central Rio Grande Rift, New Mexico, Jared Smith
Co2 Flux Along Faults Of The Central Rio Grande Rift, New Mexico, Jared Smith
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Albuquerque basin, a part of the central Rio Grande rift, is host to a complex fault network that influences deep and shallow fluid migration. This study examines CO2 flux along these faults at the northern and western borders with the Valles caldera and San Juan basin, using a CO2 flux device with an accumulation chamber (PP-Systems). These major and minor Quaternary faults have damage zones that can influence CO2 degassing, hydrocarbon migration, and groundwater flow and mixing, including geothermal waters related to the Valles caldera geothermal system, ultimately acting as conduits or barriers to fluid flow. Rift systems are …
Un/Desirable Subjects: South Asian Racialization In The Age Of Terror, Santhosh Chandrashekar
Un/Desirable Subjects: South Asian Racialization In The Age Of Terror, Santhosh Chandrashekar
Communication ETDs
This dissertation examines South Asian racialization in the United States after the 9/11 attacks. Using a comparative racialization framework, it proposes South Asian racialization as entangled with neo-orientalism, anti-Blackness, and settler colonialism which Andrea Smith (2006, 2012) has called the three pillars of white supremacy and undergirded by heteropatriarchy. An examination of the Oak Creek shooting and the discourses surrounding it demonstrated that neo-orientalism rendered Sikh Americans as interchangeable with Muslims by constituting them as 'Muslim-looking' (Ahmad, 2004), even as it coerced the former to instantiate their difference from Muslims through an aggressive performance of heterosexual patriotism and by reducing …
User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman
User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman
Communication ETDs
Social media offers users the ability to participate with a social network of others in a process of sharing and fellowship, presenting an impression of self and the ability to monitor constructed expressions. Recent studies examining the ritual view of communication, impression management, self-regulation, and self-reflective capabilities show each of these plays a role when using certain social media sites. However, a research gap exists regarding the use of any social media and the perspectives of young adult users during the scenario of experiencing regret as the result of engaging with social media. The study is a mixed-methods exploratory study …
Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley
Communication ETDs
Intercultural conflicts continue to persist for numerous reasons. The groups involved remain polarized, individuals tend to primarily concentrate on defending their own point of view, or solutions concentrate on individual actions instead of the consequences perpetuated by complex social systems. The communicative behaviors that often accompany intercultural conflicts also frequently work to sustain them, helping those who are involved to perpetuate dominant narratives and marginalizing social systems in ways in which they are both active and complicit. In this study Critical Discourse Analysis was used to examine the ways that undergraduate students discussed and conceptualized intercultural conflicts during their involvement …

Voters and legislatures throughout the country are winding down the War on Drugs and legalizing marijuana for medical and retail use. While many regulatory decisions are made at state capitals nationwide, the marijuana landscape is largely shaped by local authorities exercising influence through land use planning. Over a decade after passing a voter-initiated medical marijuana program, Colorado voters approved a State Constitutional Amendment fully legalizing marijuana for adult use. The "Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol Act of 2012" made Colorado the first state to legalize the sale, taxation, and possession of marijuana through a commercial market. Local governments were given the …
Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee
Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee
American Studies ETDs
Through a variety of lenses, contemporary crafting is examined as a complex and contradictory gender and class performance that serves as a form of communication among women that both enables and contains oppositional and gender role explorations. Crafting is created through myriad texts which transform into an individual form of expression, a societal spectacle, a fashion trend, a subculture, an addiction, a coping mechanism, an oppositional act, and a means of healing both physically and emotionally. This study investigates how the objects women make and collect reflect and define crafters' negotiations between personal desires and public personas, help them voice …
State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp
State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp
New Mexico Law Review
This Article advocates that courts should rely more heavily on an underappreciated method of constitutional interpretation: reference to parallel state constitutional text and jurisprudence. This article is novel insofar as it develops a normative argument for why courts should consult state constitutions in interpreting the meaning of the federal constitution. To illustrate the value of this method for jurists who ascribe to various judicial philosophies, the authors apply this method to the U.S. Supreme Court’s newly developed Second Amendment jurisprudence. While District of Columbia v. Heller provides some guidance in interpreting the Second Amendment under the Court’s new framework, many …
