Theory Of Metamorphic Learning, Joan Denise San-Claire (Ferrell) Jun 2015

Theory Of Metamorphic Learning, Joan Denise San-Claire (Ferrell)

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Using holistic grounded theory with participant selection through a self-designed survey, a preliminary theory and model of metamorphic learning for 16 adults who reported sudden, life-altering events emerged. Supporting the humanistic theoretical interpretations were the conceptual frameworks of transformative learning, Maslows hierarchy of needs, and positive psychology. An emic and in vivo definition led the findings about this complex, multi-faceted, and on-going learning event that profoundly impacted self-identity, direction, and quality of life. The event was a catalyst for a constructive learning, redefinition, and change process. Participants chose to confront and accept their changed reality first through critical reflection, after …

Sources And Methods Of Knowledge Acquisition By Public Network Managers, William Wuestenhagen Jun 2015

Sources And Methods Of Knowledge Acquisition By Public Network Managers, William Wuestenhagen

Public Administration ETDs

Governments use networks of organizations from the public, for-profit, and nonprofit sectors to deliver public services. While the public administration literature on the tasks and responsibilities of network management is extensive, research on the sources and methods of knowledge acquisition by public network managers is underdeveloped. The study adds to this area through original research. A group of state government professionals, who manage a federal grant in their states, was surveyed to determine how they obtain actionable knowledge to perform network activities. The results were generally consistent with prior research in several disciplines, including public administration, with notable exceptions. Significantly, …

Patterns Of Alcohol-Specific Coping Among Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder: Does Coping Repertoire Matter?, Corey Roos Jun 2015

Patterns Of Alcohol-Specific Coping Among Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder: Does Coping Repertoire Matter?, Corey Roos

Psychology ETDs

Gaining a better understanding of mechanisms that underlie change in alcohol use behaviors is essential for designing more effective treatments for alcohol use disorders (AUDs; Longabaugh & Magill, 2011). One potentially important mechanism of change is the acquisition of alcohol-specific coping skills, defined as behaviors directly aimed at preventing one from drinking. It is unclear whether having a broad repertoire of distinct coping skills is an important factor in changing ones alcohol use. An emerging body of literature suggests that having a broad repertoire of coping skills is vital to promoting psychological well-being and may enable individuals to flexibly implement …

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez Jun 2015

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez

Psychology ETDs

It is well established that heavy ethanol exposure during prenatal brain development leads to drastic morphological, cognitive and behavioral consequences. In contrast to heavy exposure, the effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are less severe yet continue well into adulthood. Animal models of PAE have been of immense importance to researchers for their ability to control for extraneous variables such as socio economic status, age, nutrition, stress, and co-exposure to other substances. Studies of moderate PAE have investigated several discrete brain regions, neurotransmitter systems, and animal behaviors. However, the effects of moderate PAE on resting state functional network connectivity …

Economics ETDs

In June of 2004 the City of Santa Fe enacted a living wage ordinance requiring an $8.50 minimum wage, the largest increase of a universal coverage municipal wage floor over its previous prevailing minimum of any municipal living wage law preceding it. Using occupational employment and wage estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics program, this paper analyzes the impact of Santa Fe's living wage on workers in low-wage occupations. Our estimates compare labor market outcomes for low-wage workers in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and show low-wage workers in Santa Fe experienced substantial hourly wage increases, …

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott Jun 2015

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott

Special Education ETDs

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world, with the latest estimates showing that 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with the condition. One of the core deficits associated with autism is social communication. Theory of mind (Baron-Cohen, 1985) posits that children with autism do not have the ability to understand that others have thoughts different from their own. This has been suggested as one of the main reasons that social communication deficits exist in children with autism. Motivation is likely the main component in effectively teaching many children with autism. Interventions that incorporate movies would seem …

Characterization Of Urban Storm Runoff By Monitoring Sediments And Riparian Vegetation, Adrienne Martinez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Difficulties associated with monitoring urban stormwater quality present considerable challenges to stormwater managers in the arid southwest. Complexities arise from the infrequent occurrence of storm events, their highly localized extent, and the short duration of storm hydrographs. The presence of sediment in high amount can make both sample collection challenging and the interpretation of the resulting data difficult. This study explored an alternative strategy in which sediments and plant matter from within the channels in an urban watershed in the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque, New Mexico, were collected for analysis of metals from possible sources within the watershed. The upper …

The Electronic Structure Of The Pyranopterin Dithiolene Cofactor And Radical Reporters Of Excited State Interactions, Benjamin William Stein

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Crystal structures of multiple molybdenum enzymes clearly demonstrate interesting structural distortions involving the pyranopterin dithiolene. These distortions can be correlated with pyranopterin oxidation state through the use of DFT geometry optimized structures of the possible oxidation states, and these are correlated with enzyme family. The potential role of the pyranopterin dithiolene in electron transfer in the varied enzyme familes has been explored through the use of non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) electron transport calculations. These calculations demonstrate clear differences in electron transport behavior as a function of pyranopterin oxidation state. The Jahn-Teller effect can strongly impact the geometric and electronic structures …

Calcium Signaling Dynamics In Rbl Cells Under Pulsed Ligand Exposure, Mario Paz Jun 2015

Calcium Signaling Dynamics In Rbl Cells Under Pulsed Ligand Exposure, Mario Paz

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Understanding cellular signaling is important to learning about life at a fundamental level. As an extension of this, understanding the dysregulation of cell signaling is the key to identifying and treating disease. At present, there are multitudes of ways to investigate the cell signaling process, from immunofluorescence to single particle tracking. These techniques are advantageous in their own right, but having the ability to interrogate suspension and adherent cells with reagents at high temporal resolution and image them simultaneously is a process that could uncover many unseen signaling events. In Aim 1, we describe a microfluidic device for live cell …

Listen, Then Speak: Foregrounding Womens Spaces, Stories, And Relationships In Dramatic Writing, Irene Loy

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In this essay, I provide documentation for my theory and practice during this MFA degree. I begin with a short personal essay on my auto-biography leading up to and including this program. Then I follow with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings to my writing practice. Of particular importance here is the framing of listening and spaciousness as feminine and of speaking and activity as masculine, as a means of underscoring the inherent value of that which has traditionally been undervalued in the history of dramatic literature. This characterizes a move toward women's bodies, rather than away from them, including …

Fault Detection And Diagnostics Of An Hvac Sub-System Using Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Networks, Christian Birk Jones

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The commercial building sector consumed about 20% of the total primary energy in the U.S. in 2008. A significant yet avoidable portion of the energy consumption is due to inefficient system operations. The inefficiencies can be attributed to degrading HVAC sub-systems, and undetected abnormal conditions. Recognition and remediation of these conditions through advanced data analytics can reduce energy consumption by 5% to 20%. This could save about $9 billion in utility costs in the U.S. alone. Modern buildings are constantly sending messages in the form of sensor data. However, this data is only as good as the system that collects …
