College Students' Perceptions Of Learner-Centeredness In Their Undergraduate Courses, Jerome Gomez Jun 2015

College Students' Perceptions Of Learner-Centeredness In Their Undergraduate Courses, Jerome Gomez

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

ABSTRACT This study investigated college students perceptions of leaner-centeredness in their undergraduate courses. The goal of this study was to examine what those perceptions were in order to inform future instructional practices that better serve the needs of college students. A demographic questionnaire and the Learner-centered Battery Student Survey (LCBSS) consisting of Total Score, 2 subscale and 11 subscale scores, were used to examine 196 students' perceptions of learner-centered instructional practice. Descriptive statistics were presented, and data were analyzed using t tests, repeated measures ANOVAs, and one-way ANOVAs to examine the relationship and extent to which students perceived their instructors' …

Order-Constrained Reference Priors With Implications For Bayesian Isotonic Regression, Analysis Of Covariance And Spatial Models, Maozhen Gong Jun 2015

Order-Constrained Reference Priors With Implications For Bayesian Isotonic Regression, Analysis Of Covariance And Spatial Models, Maozhen Gong

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Selecting an appropriate prior distribution is a fundamental issue in Bayesian Statistics. In this dissertation, under the framework provided by Berger and Bernardo, I derive the reference priors for several models which include: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)/Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) models with a categorical variable under common ordering constraints, the conditionally autoregressive (CAR) models and the simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models with a spatial autoregression parameter considered. The performances of reference priors for ANOVA/ANCOVA models are evaluated by simulation studies with comparisons to Jeffreys' prior and Least Squares Estimation (LSE). The priors are then illustrated in a Bayesian model of the …

Theory, Multiscale Simulations, And Experiments On Mesoscale Multifunctional Systems, Lance Edward Edens Jun 2015

Theory, Multiscale Simulations, And Experiments On Mesoscale Multifunctional Systems, Lance Edward Edens

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Computational simulations use theoretical models to reproduce, as accurately as possible, the observed real-world behavior of complex structures. Guided by experimental observations, many multiscale/coarse-grained simulations seek to explore increasingly complicated systems. Here, a multiscale/coarse-grained simulation program (called TM2) is developed with applications to 1) properties and mechanisms of DNA and DNA polymerases, and 2) adhesion between whole bacterial cells and patterned surfaces. Results from the bacterial adhesion application form a part of a larger collaborative effort aimed at creating multifunctional, controllable surfaces to capture and kill pathogenic bacteria. The application of TM2 is first demonstrated by a coarse-grained model for …

To What Extent Is The Safety Of College Football Student-Athletes Compromised By Playing Guarantee Games Against Superior Opponents?, Daniel Ballou Jun 2015

To What Extent Is The Safety Of College Football Student-Athletes Compromised By Playing Guarantee Games Against Superior Opponents?, Daniel Ballou

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Powerhouse college football teams have a history of scheduling lesser opponents to start a new season. The revenues generated in college football due to television and post-season bowl games have made these games more common. Universities competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) make up the top level of collegiate football. FBS schools have more scholarships to give and belong to conferences with television contracts worth millions of dollars. Schools at the FBS level compete in season-ending bowl games, and the top four teams compete in the College Football Playoff (CFP). The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is the division made …

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Molybdenum Enzymes And Models, Chao Dong Jun 2015

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Molybdenum Enzymes And Models, Chao Dong

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In this dissertation spectroscopic methods such as electronic absorption (EAS), resonance Raman (rRaman), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and MCD spectroscopies have been used in combination with DFT calculations for the interpretation of experimental results. These methods have been used to investigate the molybdenum coordination environment in enzymes and model complexes. Xanthine oxidase (XO), one of the canonical molybdenum enzyme families, hydroxylizes heterocyclic substrates by inserting an oxygen atom from molybdenum-activated water into a substrate C-H bond. This generates reducing equivalents that pass through two iron sulfur clusters and then to FAD, where oxidation of the FAD takes place. In this …

Effects Of The Student Success Skill Program On Feelings Of Connectedness, Parent-Child Relationship, And Success Skill Engagement In Middle School Students, Phyllis Hannah Bowers

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The author of the current study examined the effects of the Student Success Skills (SSS) program on middle school students' perceptions of connectedness, parent-child relationship, and engagement in success skills. The sample included 41 predominantly Hispanic seventh grade students from an impoverished community in the rural southwest. The author used a paired-samples t-test to determine the effects of the SSS program on connectedness, parent-child relationship, and success skill engagement. Overall, students reported significantly decreased perceptions of connectedness and success skill engagement. A rationale for the students' results reflects the context of current educational climate, sex factors, and ethnic considerations. Based …

Fanaticos, Exiles And The Mexico-U.S. Border: Episodes Of Mexican State Reconstruction, 1923-1929, Julian Dodson

History ETDs

Fanaticos, Exiles and the Mexico-United States Border: Episodes of Mexican State Reconstruction, 1923-1929,' examines the major challenges to state reconstruction in Mexico in the wake of its decade of revolutionary violence, 1910-1920. The Mexican state, since the beginning of the revolution, found that the best way to deal with political dissent was to exile its malcontents. By the 1920s, this practice had conjured the necessity for an expanding external surveillance apparatus, as it also created the conditions by which dangerous alliances could be made between Catholic dissidents, and the more politically ambitious exiles from both before and after the revolution. …

A Computationally Efficient Moment-Preserving Monte Carlo Electron Transport Method With Implementation In Geant4, David Dixon Jun 2015

A Computationally Efficient Moment-Preserving Monte Carlo Electron Transport Method With Implementation In Geant4, David Dixon

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The subject of this dissertation is a moment-preserving Monte Carlo electron transport method that is more efficient than analog or detailed Monte Carlo simulations, yet provides accuracy that is statistically indistinguishable from the detailed simulation. Moreover, the Moment-Preserving (MP) method is formulated such that it is distinctly different than Condensed History (CH) methods making the MP method free of the limitations inherent to CH and proving a viable alternative for transporting electrons. Analog, or detailed, Monte Carlo simulations of charged particle transport is computationally intensive; thus, it is impractical for routine calculations. The computational cost of analog Monte Carlo is …

Education, Health And Inequality: Schooling Infrastructure And Educational Outcomes In Nepal, Vinish Shrestha Jun 2015

Education, Health And Inequality: Schooling Infrastructure And Educational Outcomes In Nepal, Vinish Shrestha

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

We estimate the impact of an increase in the number of schools on educational outcomes in Nepal. We combine the between-district differences in number of new schools with variation in exposure to these schools created by the virtue of individuals being of school-age. Our results and back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that on average the increase in the number of schools can explain about a third of the total differences in the reading and writing abilities for the treated and control groups of women. These results underscore the continued importance of increasing access to schooling in developing countries like Nepal.
