Estimating Potential Exposure From Abandoned Uranium Mine Sites Through Machine Learning Classification Of Animal Behavior: A Case Study In The Navajo Nation, Christopher Girlamo Jan 2023

Estimating Potential Exposure From Abandoned Uranium Mine Sites Through Machine Learning Classification Of Animal Behavior: A Case Study In The Navajo Nation, Christopher Girlamo

Geography ETDs

Waste from Abandoned Uranium Mines (AUMs) has negatively impacted Indigenous communities for generations. To answer these concerns, this research collaborated with Navajo Nation community members in Cove, AZ and Red Valley, AZ in order to better predict the potential AUM waste exposure their flocks face. A GIS-Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (GIS-MCDA) model quantified potential exposure to AUM waste. Animal behavior was classified based on GPS and accelerometer data utilizing a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The results of both the GIS-MCDA and animal behavior classification modeling was combined into a cumulative exposure potential value for each animal. This study found that livestock …

Pathways To Sustainability: Industry, Development, Business, Agriculture, Economy, And Politics, Andreas Hernandez, Pablo Arias-Benavides, Dayana C.M. Machada, Ousmane Pame, Alice Main, Per Moller

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In this chapter we examine six compelling on-the-ground experiences, which are demonstrating pathways to sustainability, resilience and regeneration. Each case opens a pathway to sustainability in a key sphere of human activity: industry, development, business, agriculture, economy and politics. These experiences are creating new social imaginaries embodied in the practical forms of new politics and economics aimed at profound democratizations of human life, and towards a creative realignment of humans with the rest of the web of life. These social imaginaries are both open and encompassing. They are open in the sense that they can be filled with new possibilities …

New Similarity And Entropy Measures Of Temporal Complex Neutrosophic Set And Its Application In Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Luong Thi Hong Lan, Nguyen Tho Thong, Nguyen Long Giang, Florentin Smarandache, Vo Si Nam, Dinh Van Dzung Jan 2023

New Similarity And Entropy Measures Of Temporal Complex Neutrosophic Set And Its Application In Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Luong Thi Hong Lan, Nguyen Tho Thong, Nguyen Long Giang, Florentin Smarandache, Vo Si Nam, Dinh Van Dzung

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Temporal complex neutrosophic set (TCNS) is an effective structure for resolving information that has uncertain, indeterminate, and timerelated factors in decision-making problems. In the last decade, many researchers focused on estimating the vagueness and ambiguity in knowledge using the theory of neutrosophic sets or extensions of neutrosophic sets. Similarity and entropy measures are valuable tools to measure information with the aim of dealing with real-life multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) problems. However, the existing method did not care or interest in the information measures of TCNS. This paper proposes several new similarity and entropy measures under the TCNS environment. The suggested …

New Mexico's Greenbelt Law: Disincentivizing Water Conservation Through Agricultural Tax Breaks, Annalise Porter, Robert P. Berrens, John Fleck Jan 2023

New Mexico's Greenbelt Law: Disincentivizing Water Conservation Through Agricultural Tax Breaks, Annalise Porter, Robert P. Berrens, John Fleck

Natural Resources Journal

New Mexico (NM) passed a Greenbelt law (NM Stat § 7-36-20) in 1967 offering tax subsidies to agricultural landowners. The law represents a serious disconnect between land and water policy in that it has serious water policy implications but has never been discussed accordingly. We estimate that in 2020, Rio Grande surface flows were used to irrigate 4,388 acres of land in Bernalillo County, the state’s largest urban area, that received the agricultural valuation. This represents an estimated water use of nearly 11,000 acre-feet, on many properties not utilizing the program as originally intended, in a region where agriculture is …

Policing The Unhoused, Ernesto A. Longa Jan 2023

Policing The Unhoused, Ernesto A. Longa

Faculty Scholarship

[A]n Albuquerque police officer ordered Joleen Nez, a 37- year-old, unhoused, American Indian woman, “to pick up her litter [from the street] and of the consequences if she did not.” Joleen refused, stating, “It’s not my trash.” The consequences were that Joleen was summoned to appear in court for littering, booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (“MDC”) when she failed to appear and declared an in-custody death the next day. These stories and others like them prompted a series of questions. Why are non-violent petty criminal offenders being murdered by police and dying in county jails? What does the …

Keeping All The Lights On: A Roadmap To Affordable, Universal Electricity Service In The Clean Energy Transition, Gabriel Pacyniak Jan 2023

Keeping All The Lights On: A Roadmap To Affordable, Universal Electricity Service In The Clean Energy Transition, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing reckoning with structural racism, and an emerging focus on justice in the clean energy transition have combined to spotlight utility disconnections and the related issues of energy access, affordability, and security. Recent empirical scholarship has demonstrated that electricity disconnections of lower-income people are relatively common, disproportionately affect people of color, and cause significant harm. This Article describes how a number of U.S. states are fashioning an emerging policy model that makes significant progress toward truly affordable and accessible electricity service for all. It also describes how these state actions are consistent with U.S. utility law …

Applications Of Extended Plithogenic Sets In Plithogenic Sociogram, S. Sudha, Nivetha Martin, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2023

Applications Of Extended Plithogenic Sets In Plithogenic Sociogram, S. Sudha, Nivetha Martin, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The theory of plithogeny developed by Smarandache is described as a more generalized form of representing sets of different nature such as crisp, fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic. Plithogenic set comprises degree of appurtenance and contradiction degree with respect only to the dominant attribute. This paper introduces extended plithogenic sets comprising degrees of appurtenance and contradiction with respect to both dominant and recessive attributes. The extension of the 5-tuple Plithogenic sets to a 7- tuple plithogenic sets helps in developing a more comprehensive kind of Plithogenic sociogram. The newly developed plithogenic sets and its implications in Plithogenic sociogram is validated by …

[Research Note] The Random Somatic Mutation Is Not Quite Random, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2023

[Research Note] The Random Somatic Mutation Is Not Quite Random, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This research note challenges the idea that Random Somatic Mutations are entirely random, highlighting their non-equiprobable nature and their influence on evolution, involution, or indeterminacy. It recalls the Neutrosophic Theory of Evolution, extending Darwin’s theory, and emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between different senses of “random mutation” in evolutionary theory.

Medical Diagnosis Via Refined Neutrosophic Fuzzy Logic: Detection Of Illness Using Neutrosophic Sets, K. Hemabala, B. Srinivasa Kumar, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2023

Medical Diagnosis Via Refined Neutrosophic Fuzzy Logic: Detection Of Illness Using Neutrosophic Sets, K. Hemabala, B. Srinivasa Kumar, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The objective of the paper is to implement and validate diagnosis in the medical field via refined neutrosophic fuzzy logic (RNFL). As such, we have proposed a Max-Min composition (MMC) method in RNFL. This method deals with the diagnosis under certain constraints like uncertainty and indeterminacy. Further, we have considered the diagnosis problems to validate the sensitivity analysis of the novel multi attribute decision-making technique. Finally, we gave the graphical representations and compared the obtained results with other existing measures in refined neutrosophic fuzzy sets.

Remark On Regenerative Medicine And Potential Utilization Of Low-Intensity Laser Photobiomodulation To Activate Human Stem Cells, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache, Robert N. Boyd

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Recently, a friend of one of these writers told her story of using one of a healthcare product to activate her stem cells as part of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine is a field of medicine that seeks to repair or replace damaged or diseased tissues and organs. This can be done through a variety of methods, including stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, and gene therapy. This is a short review article on this rapid field called regenerative medicine, in particular via a new method called photobiomodulation, especially by virtue of low-intensity laser pen treatment. Hopefully it will attract more research …

Seeking To Be 'Like Water': Plastic Regulation In The People's Republic Of China, Dr. Gerry Nagtzaam, Dr. Elena Karataeva Jan 2023

Seeking To Be 'Like Water': Plastic Regulation In The People's Republic Of China, Dr. Gerry Nagtzaam, Dr. Elena Karataeva

Natural Resources Journal

China is one of the biggest producers of both virgin plastic and plastic waste. In order to tackle its growing plastic pollution crisis, China has recently made a number of significant legislative reforms directed at minimizing the use of disposable plastics, increasing the production of degradable plastic items and cutting off its reliance on imported plastic waste for recycling feedstock to boost its own recycling efforts. However, relying on recycling and degradable plastics as solutions to the plastic waste crisis may not be sufficient. China’s approach highlights an inherent contradiction in minimizing plastic pollution whilst simultaneously increasing plastic production.

State Sequestration: Federal Policy Accelerates Carbon Storage, But Leaves Full Climate, Equity Protections To States, Gabriel Pacyniak Jan 2023

State Sequestration: Federal Policy Accelerates Carbon Storage, But Leaves Full Climate, Equity Protections To States, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

Abstract

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—the UN’s expert science panel—has repeatedly found that limiting climate change to prevent catastrophic harms will require at least some use of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), and may entail substantial deployments of this technology. There is significant uncertainty, however, about the level of lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions achievable in practice from varying CCS applications; some applications could even lead to net increases in emissions. In addition, a number of these applications create or maintain other harms, especially those related to fossil fuel extraction and use. For these reasons, many environmental justice advocates …

Masking Vulnerability: Including Ppe As A Covered Service In Health Insurance, Mary Leto Pareja Jan 2023

Masking Vulnerability: Including Ppe As A Covered Service In Health Insurance, Mary Leto Pareja

Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the shared vulnerability inherent in the human condition, prompting a collective recognition of our physical susceptibility to infectious diseases. While great strides have been made in combating COVID-19 through vaccinations and treatments, a portion of the population remains profoundly vulnerable due to health conditions that make the disease more dangerous, that limit vaccine efficacy, or that prevent vaccination altogether. This article explores a path forward by proposing a solution within health benefit plans—encompassing both private health insurance and public health benefits. Specifically, the article advocates for a coverage mandate for over-the-counter personal protective equipment (PPE) …

The Need For An Asian American Supreme Court Justice, Vinay Harpalani Jan 2023

The Need For An Asian American Supreme Court Justice, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

In her insightful Comment on Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina (hereinafter SFFA cases), Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig critiques Chief Justice Roberts’s majority opinion for its “simplistic understanding of race and racism.” She interrogates the “doxa” — the “unexamined cultural beliefs” that structure the majority’s narrative on racial experiences. Onwuachi- Willig elucidates how Chief Justice Roberts accepts whiteness as a tacit norm and ignores the marginalization of people of color. She contrasts this with the “fuller” history of American racism brought forth by Justices …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Patient safety education is a mandated Common Program Requirement of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in all medical residency and fellowship programs. Although many hospitals and healthcare environments have general patient safety education tools for trainees, few to none focus on the unique training milieu of pathologists, including a mix of highly automated and manual error-prone processes, frequent multiplicity of events, and lack of direct patient relationships for error disclosure. We established a national Association of Pathology Chairs-Program Directors Section Workgroup focused on patient safety education for …
