In The Dark: The Scapegoating Of Renewables After Grid Failures, Teddy Gonzalez, Jillian Knox Jan 2023

In The Dark: The Scapegoating Of Renewables After Grid Failures, Teddy Gonzalez, Jillian Knox

Natural Resources Journal

Renewable energy is increasingly scapegoated as the primary cause of weather-related power outages and other grid failures, despite substantial evidence to the contrary. Disinformation campaigns framing renewables as unreliable are driven by two factors: the increasing frequency of power outages and the growing pressures facing fossil fuel energy stakeholders. Over the past decade, power outages in the United States have doubled, primarily due to increased extreme weather, aging energy infrastructure, and a rapidly changing resource mix. At the same time, the energy transition is placing unprecedented competitive pressure on the coal and gas industry and on the nation’s utilities. These …

Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure: Why Expecting Individuals Should Take A Pregnancy Pause From Using Cannabinoid Products, Alexis Lin, Gelonia L. Dent, Suzy Davies, Zarena M. Dominguez, Leigh-Anne Cioffredi, Gabrielle L. Mclemore, Jessie R. Maxwell

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Cannabinoid use in all populations is increasing as legalization across the United States continues. Concerningly, there is a lack of caution provided by medical providers to pregnant individuals as to the impact the use of cannabinoids could have on the developing fetus. Research continues in both the preclinical and clinical areas, and is severely needed, as the potency of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, has increased dramatically since the initial studies were completed. Thus far, clinical studies raise compelling evidence for short term memory deficits, impulse control issues, and attention deficiencies following prenatal cannabinoid exposure (PCE). These …

Perspective Of Patients And Stakeholders As Members Of A Research Team, Janet L Poole, Sharon L Newbill

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare orphan disease, characterized by skin thickening, vascular insufficiency, and fibrosis of internal organs. SSc affects about 100,000 people in the United States. This study explored perceived benefits and challenges of patient partners and stakeholders, who were team members on a project to revise and test a self-management program (Taking Charge of Systemic Sclerosis). Five patient partners, 1 stakeholder from the Scleroderma Foundation and 1 stakeholder from a state chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation were interviewed. Conversations were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed. Four themes emerged from the analysis with corresponding subthemes: contributions …

Sessile Serrated Lesion Detection Rates Continue To Increase: 2008-2020, Nicholas Edwardson, Prajakta Adsul, Zorisadday Gonzalez, V Shane Pankratz, Gulshan Parasher, Kevin English, Shiraz Mishra

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Background and study aims  We assessed sessile serrated lesion detection rate (SSLDR) at a large academic medical center from 2008 to 2020 and modeled a local, aspirational target SSLDR. We also assessed SSLDRs among all gastroenterology fellows to better understand the relationship between SSLDRs and total colonoscopies performed.

Patients and methods  SSL-positive pathology results were flagged from a dataset composed of all screening colonoscopies for average-risk patients from 2008 to 2020. Unadjusted SSLDRs were calculated for individual endoscopists by year. A mixed effects logistic regression was used to estimate the log odds of SSL detection, with one model estimating division-wide …

Pilot Study Shows Skin-To-Skin Care With Parents Improves Heart Rate Variability In Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Erin Swieter, Jessica M. Gross, Julia Stephen, Kristi Watterberg, Jessie R. Maxwell

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin care in the newborn intensive care unit typically lasts for short periods of time and enhances breastfeeding, attachment, and parental self-esteem. Heart rate variability (HRV) increases with gestational age and is a measure of maturation of parasympathetic vs. sympathetic autonomic nervous system activity. HRV measurements may be useful in capturing changes in autonomic regulation in response to skin-to-skin care.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of skin-to-skin care on HRV in preterm infants receiving respiratory support. We hypothesized that skin-to-skin care would result in a more mature pattern of parasympathetic activity.

METHODS: In this prospective crossover study, infants <30 >weeks' …

Brain Structural Differences In Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder And Its Subtypes, Theresah Boateng, Kathryn Beauchamp, Faerl Torres, Chaselyn D. Ruffaner-Hanson, John Fl Pinner, Kishore Vakamudi, Cassandra Cerros, Dina E. Hill, Julia M. Stephen

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

INTRODUCTION: The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been examined in animal models and humans. The current study extends the prior literature by quantifying differences in brain structure for individuals with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) compared to typically developing controls, as well as examining FASD subtypes. We hypothesized the FASD group would reveal smaller brain volume, reduced cortical thickness, and reduced surface area compared to controls, with the partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)/fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) subtypes showing the largest effects and the PAE/alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) subtype revealing intermediate effects.

METHODS: The sample consisted of …

Monitoring American Federalism: The History Of State Legislative Resistance, Christian G. Fritz

Faculty Book Display Case

As Americans have monitored federalism, they struggled with how a government based on sovereignty divided between nation and states might function. The Constitution’s shared sovereignty created an inherently dynamic federalism with almost continuous debates over the balance of power, making this testing of the balance of federalism and monitoring government central to the American constitutional order. Many constitutional debates involved the protection of slavery, yet other interests including debt, taxation, and police powers also played vital roles in shaping American federalism. State resistance to the national government utilizing the constitutional tool of interposition arose when the disequilibrium of federalism was …

Climate, Health, And Equity Implications Of Large Facility Pollution Sources In New Mexico, Gabriel Pacyniak, Angélica Ruiz, Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, Elena Krieger

Faculty Scholarship

In 2019, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an executive order establishing a goal of cutting New Mexico greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 45 percent by 2030.1 In parallel, the state legislature enacted the 2019 Energy Transition Act (ETA), which requires New Mexico utilities to decarbonize their electricity supply by 2045.2 In keeping with these actions, state agencies issued regulations to reduce GHG emissions from oil and gas and transportation sources and to implement the ETA.

These ambitious policies are essential to address the climate-driven extreme weather events, such as record-breaking wildfires, drought, and heat, which are already impacting New …

Background

Latinos who live in poverty are at high risk for type 2 diabetes (diabetes). Health guidelines recommend strategies for self-management, but many people find lifestyle change to be challenging. Systematic reviews show that culturally competent self-management programs that take values, customs, beliefs, and language from Latino culture into account can significantly improve diabetes outcomes.

Objectives

We compared the effectiveness of two distinct evidence-based models of culturally competent diabetes health promotion: 1) The Diabetes Self-Management Support Empowerment Model (DSMS), an approach using a classroom-based educational sessions taught by trained diabetes educators, and 2) The Chronic Care Model (CCM), a holistic …

Harnessing Axonal Transport To Map Reward Circuitry: Differing Brain-Wide Projections From Medial Prefrontal Cortical Domains, Elaine L. Bearer, Christopher S. Medina, Taylor W. Uselman, Russell E. Jacobs

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Neurons project long axons that contact other distant neurons. Neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex project into the limbic system to regulate responses to reward or threat. Diminished neural activity in prefrontal cortex is associated with loss of executive function leading to drug use, yet the specific circuitry that mediate these effects is unknown. Different regions within the medial prefrontal cortex may project to differing limbic system nuclei. Here, we exploited the cell biology of intracellular membrane trafficking, fast axonal transport, to map projections from two adjacent medial prefrontal cortical regions. We used Mn(II), a calcium analog, to trace medial …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Bleeding is a serious adverse effect of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs). Anticoagulation reversal is required in some acute cases. This is usually accomplished by plasma transfusion or four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC). The aim of this study was to gain insight into the clinical course of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding who require VKA reversal.

METHODS: Medical records were collected from two centers from patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) for GI bleeding and received 4F-PCC or plasma for VKA reversal between January 2015 and December 2020. ED, hospital, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) …

Expanding The Dimensionality Of Team Deviance: An Organizing Framework And Review, Trevor Spoelma, Tamanna Chauhan

Faculty and Staff Publications

Although team deviance is known to detract from team functioning, extant literature largely focuses on deviance that is independently enacted and directed internally toward other members. This relatively narrow focus poses limitations to the practical application of strategies to reduce the incidence and negative impact of team deviance. We offer a four-dimensional typology that takes into account features of team deviance that are important yet undertheorized: level of coordination and target membership. We use this typology to summarize current research, highlight the narratives on team deviance that underlie each dimension, and discuss how to advance the research domain.

Effects Of A Psychological Stressor On Methamphetamine Seeking In Rats., Kayla B. Cox Jan 2023

Effects Of A Psychological Stressor On Methamphetamine Seeking In Rats., Kayla B. Cox

Psychology ETDs

Although methamphetamine abuse and fatality rates are on the rise in the United States, there are currently no FDA approved drugs to treat methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). To better understand factors contributing to addiction, researchers have designed various rodent models of stress including the use of footshock, social defeat and maternal separation, however, these models involve physical or early life stress exposure and thus are less translatable to human psychological stress. The present study implemented predatory odors as a model of psychological stress and examined whether chronic exposure to these stressors enhanced subsequent vulnerability to a subthreshold dose of methamphetamine. …
