Latino In The U.S.: Do Ethnic Identity And Family Support Protect Against Ethnic Discrimination?, Yajaira Johnson-Esparza
Latino In The U.S.: Do Ethnic Identity And Family Support Protect Against Ethnic Discrimination?, Yajaira Johnson-Esparza
Psychology ETDs
Latinos currently account for 16% of the total U.S. population and are projected to account for 25% by 2050. Despite the growth in population, Latinos continue to experience discrimination based on their ethnicity. Prior research has found that ethnic discrimination is associated with adverse effects on mental health, including increased risk of depression. The present study investigated the relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination and past year depression among U.S.-born and foreign-born Latinos using data from the National Latino and Asian American Survey (NLAAS). It also examined how ethnic identity and family support mediated the relationship between ethnic discrimination and depression. …
Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski
Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski
History ETDs
The discovery of gold in California inspired a rush of amateur miners to the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1849. Meanwhile, Europeans hurried to their Alps to climb during the Golden Age of Mountaineering. These events, seemingly separate, came from the same basic impetus. The Scientific Revolution eased the old fear of mountains from the religious tradition and gave humans the license and curiosity to explore. Mountains also offered capital incentive to adventurers in the form of mineral deposits, tourism and the glory that comes with athletic accomplishment. Between 1849 and 1936, "mountaineers" transformed the nearly inaccessible high places of the …
Distortion And Revolution In Texas U.S. Congressional Redistricting Politics: 1972-2014, Willard B. Hunter
Distortion And Revolution In Texas U.S. Congressional Redistricting Politics: 1972-2014, Willard B. Hunter
Geography ETDs
Over 42 years and 22 US congressional elections between 1972 and 2014, Texas evolved from a state controlled by the Democratic Party since Reconstruction to one dominated by the Republican Party. This thesis examines the relationship between measures of district compactness and changing demographics (decreasing non-Hispanic White percentage and increasing Hispanic percentage) on a measure of electoral bias, as measured by a metric called distortion during this transition. Distortion is the difference between the percentage of seats won by a party with the percentage of votes it received in a statewide congressional election. Using a general linear regression model, the …
At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura
At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura
History ETDs
Research into the pre-Islamic Arabs has posited an autochthonous, maritime tradition in Southern Arabia which provided the foundation for effective use of sea power within the early Islamic state. Using historical and archaeological evidence, the existence of such a tradition is reexamined within the broader cultural and historical context of the area, with focus divided into three periods; that immediately prior to the birth of Muhammad, that before the rise of Ptolemaic Egypt and that of the Mesopotamian City-States, when southern Arabia was peripheral to the earliest organized civilizations. It is concluded that although maritime resources were always utilized to …
Neighborhood Experiences And The Co-Construction Of Neighborhood, Race, And Gender: A Qualitative Study Of A Middle-Class, Latino-White Neighborhood, Elena Windsong
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation incorporates three distinct bodies of scholarship to bridge theories on: 1) the social construction of community and neighborhood, 2) the social construction of race, and 3) the social construction of gender. In doing so, I identify similarities in these theories by focusing on the symbolic and interactional dimensions. I draw from this theoretical framework to address the research question: for a middle-class neighborhood with a relatively even mix of both whites and Latinos, what are the patterns of neighborhood experiences in terms of race and gender? I develop the multidimensional analytic concept of neighborhood experiences to include neighboring, …
The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers
The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers
English Language and Literature ETDs
The Wilderness in Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience and Society' focuses on the disjunction between the actual environmental conditions of medieval England and the depiction of the wilderness in the literature of the time period from the Anglo-Saxon conversion to the close of the Middle Ages. Using environmental history to identify the moments of slippage between fact and fiction, this project examines the ideology behind the representations of the wilderness in literature and the relationship of these representations to social practices and cultural norms as well as genre and targeted audience. The first chapter argues that the depiction of early …

"The Four Horseman Of The Late Capitalist Apocalypse": U.S. Comic Books, Ideology, And Trauma In Post-9/11 Society, Kathryn Manis
Art & Art History ETDs
In the contemporary United States apocalypse, dystopia, and catastrophe are commonplace. Indeed, both the increasing presence of fictional apocalypse in art and popular culture and the tone of apocalypticism in U.S. political, environmental, and social rhetorics, have been noted by writers and thinkers from a wide range of fields. Scholars of neoliberalism in particular have traced this popularity to the economic and political realities of late-capitalism and the ideological contradictions embedded in the evolution of capitalism to its current, immersive iteration. What has gone undiscussed, however, is the relationship of this anxious preoccupation to a prevailing, national condition; a condition …
The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis provides an exploration of an empresa recuperada por sus trabajadores (worker recovered enterprise, ERT) case study in Argentina in an effort to understand their impact to employment retention during economic crisis. Part of the larger social upheaval resulting from failed economic liberalization during the 1990s, ERTs attempt to implement an alternative economic development strategy through self-management of previously private enterprises. This thesis explores one ERT located in Florencio Varela, Argentina, in an effort to understand the impact the ERTs have in local communities in terms of employment retention and social capital production. Lastly, the analysis examines the role …
Constraints On Distributions And Diversity Of Birds And Mammals Over Variable Environments, Trevor S. Fristoe
Constraints On Distributions And Diversity Of Birds And Mammals Over Variable Environments, Trevor S. Fristoe
Biology ETDs
The distributions of species are determined by intrinsic factors such as physiological tolerances as well as extrinsic factors of the environment such as the availability of resources. While physiological tolerances generally change over evolutionary time scales, changes in environmental productivity due to processes such as succession or seasonal progression often occur over ecological times. I address both physiology and resource availability as drivers of the distributions and diversity of endothermic birds and mammals using a macroecological approach and a metabolic perspective. Migratory birds, altering communities over seasonal cycles, provide a unique opportunity to investigate the drivers of distributions and diversity …
Pre-Industrial Melanism: The Origin, Maintenance, And Genetic Basis Of An Urban Melanic Morph Of The Vermilion Flycatcher, Carl Jonathan Schmitt
Pre-Industrial Melanism: The Origin, Maintenance, And Genetic Basis Of An Urban Melanic Morph Of The Vermilion Flycatcher, Carl Jonathan Schmitt
Biology ETDs
Industrial melanism is a celebrated evolutionary phenomenon because it demonstrates the efficacy of natural selection in response to anthropogenic environmental change. We investigated a potential instance of industrial melanism in a vertebrate, the vermilion flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus). The species is strikingly bright red throughout its broad range, but a sooty brown morph is abundant in the heavily polluted city of Lima, Peru. We found that plumage morph is perfectly predicted by a single nucleotide polymorphism in the MC1R gene. We quantified genotype and allele frequencies in seven neighborhoods of Lima. Within neighborhoods, there were fewer heterozygotes than expected, and surveys …

Ecotone Conditions Along Pinon-Juniper And Ponderosa Pine Elevational Ranges, Jemez Mountains, Nm, Christopher Lawrence Sanderson
Ecotone Conditions Along Pinon-Juniper And Ponderosa Pine Elevational Ranges, Jemez Mountains, Nm, Christopher Lawrence Sanderson
Architecture and Planning ETDs
While climate variability is endemic to Southwest North America (SWNA), mounting evidence indicates the region is undergoing significant warming and becoming increasingly arid. Species are at or near their physiological limits at ecotone boundaries and are therefore particularly sensitive to climate change. Drought and warming associated tree mortality has been particularly acute in the semiarid forests and woodlands of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA, where ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) and piñon--juniper woodlands (Pinus edulis and Juniperus monosperma) have been subject to cambium-feeding pine beetle (Dendroctonus spp., Ips spp) attacks and increased wildfire activity and severity. Grazing …
Connecting Schools And Communities: A Spatial Approach To Social Capital And Student Performance In The Albuquerque Public School District, Steven T. Bishop
Connecting Schools And Communities: A Spatial Approach To Social Capital And Student Performance In The Albuquerque Public School District, Steven T. Bishop
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Locating services and accesses to opportunities is a growing trend in community schools. Having on-site health services, employment programs, after-school programs, and other social services for students, parents, and members in a community surrounding a school, strengthens the relationships between schools and the communities they serve. These relationships foster increased stocks of social capital in a community and with parents, and the link between parental and community social capital and student performance is strong. In order to make the most of limited resources, schools and school districts implementing community school models must identify which services and accesses to opportunities help …
Mutalismo: A Community Based Approach Preservation Of The Pueblo De Abiquiu, James M. Aranda, Moises Gonzales, Jose Rivera
Mutalismo: A Community Based Approach Preservation Of The Pueblo De Abiquiu, James M. Aranda, Moises Gonzales, Jose Rivera
Resource Center for Raza Planning (RCRP)
The Merced del Pueblo de Abiquiu is one of New Mexico’s historic genizaro land grant settlements. “Genizaro was the designation given to North American Indians of mixed tribal derivation living among the Hispanic population” (Gonzales 2014). The “historical connection to the Hopi Genizaro Pueblo Indians of Tewa descent” (Gonzales 2014) is what gives Abiquiu its Pueblo designation. The original settlers were Tewa peoples who settled the area during the early 1600s, followed by the Hopi who left Arizona and settled in the Merced del Pueblo de Abiquiu. “From the 1740s to the 1790s, towns such as Abiquiu were established as …
Texas Exempt Wells: Where Does Fracking Fit, Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, Amber Miller
Texas Exempt Wells: Where Does Fracking Fit, Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, Amber Miller
Natural Resources Journal
In the midst of a record-setting drought and an unprecedented oil and gas boom, an important question has arisen under Texas water law. Where do the water wells that supply fresh groundwater for the fracking process fit under the current Texas Water Code? Are these wells “exempt” under Texas Water Code section 36.117(b)(2) as water wells used solely for oil and gas drilling and exploration, which would excuse the wells from many requirements imposed on most other water wells? Specifically, must groundwater wells drilled for fracking comply with the groundwater conservation districts’ (GCDs) permitting requirements prior to drilling and operation? …
Divine Poetics: Representation Of Genre In Ovid's Metamorphoses 6.70-128, Hong Yoong
Divine Poetics: Representation Of Genre In Ovid's Metamorphoses 6.70-128, Hong Yoong
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
In my thesis, I explore the generic allusion of two ekphrases in the textile competition between Minerva and Arachne. While various scholars have approached the story of Arachne based on Ovids critique of the Augustan regime, I focus more on the poetic representation of the two ekphrases in the context of their intertextual relationship with other Greek and Roman literary traditions. Minerva's tapestry is the embodiment of the heroic epic tradition similar to Homeric and Vergilian narrative, and Arachne's tapestry represents the archetype of the Hellenistic poetic tradition. While Ovid perceives the heroic epic tradition as the embodiment of Minerva's …

Santa Fe, New Mexico's Living Wage Ordinance And Its Effects On The Employment And Wages Of Workers In Low-Wage Occupations', Justin B. Hollis
Economics ETDs
In June of 2004 the City of Santa Fe enacted a living wage ordinance requiring an $8.50 minimum wage, the largest increase of a universal coverage municipal wage floor over its previous prevailing minimum of any municipal living wage law preceding it. Using occupational employment and wage estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics program, this paper analyzes the impact of Santa Fe's living wage on workers in low-wage occupations. Our estimates compare labor market outcomes for low-wage workers in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and show low-wage workers in Santa Fe experienced substantial hourly wage increases, …
The "Free Road": Indigenous Travel And Rights Of Passage On The Missouri River, Christopher Steinke
The "Free Road": Indigenous Travel And Rights Of Passage On The Missouri River, Christopher Steinke
History ETDs
Well before Lewis and Clark, Native Americans traveled on the Missouri River, crossing it to visit friends and family members, shipping supplies downriver, and conducting visitors toward their villages. Their mobility on the upper Missouri River, an imposing and dangerous continental divide, granted them the power to define rights of passage across the midcontinent. Following the collapse of New Cahokia, Arikara and Mandan settlers pressed up the river valley and established expansive transportation and communication networks that stretched across the Missouri watershed. By 1650 their villages were influential centers of Native North America and places where river crossings held not …
A Case Study In Toponymy: Sampling And Classifying A Tri-Lingual Place Name Inventory Found In The North-Central State Of New Mexico, Roberto H. Valdez
A Case Study In Toponymy: Sampling And Classifying A Tri-Lingual Place Name Inventory Found In The North-Central State Of New Mexico, Roberto H. Valdez
Geography ETDs
The north-central portion of the State of New Mexico has an extensive distribution of geographic names applied to landscape features from documented sources and from living oral tradition. Many of these geographic names originated from three distinct socio-linguistic groups, among which are names in three languages applied to single features. The three primary languages involved are Tewa, Spanish and English. Names that apply to topographical features and a selection of man-build features on the landscape were collected, mapped, and useful approaches to analyze them were developed from literature on toponymy, the study of place names. This study offers an analysis …
Gregório De Matos Guerra’S Poetic Corpus As An Analogy For The Duality Of Colonial Brazil, Viviane Ferreira De Faria
Gregório De Matos Guerra’S Poetic Corpus As An Analogy For The Duality Of Colonial Brazil, Viviane Ferreira De Faria
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
In this thesis I propose a model of analysis for Gregório de Matos Guerras poetry based on the scholarly understanding of his Satirical poetry as a representation of Colonial Brazil as a body in decay. The comparison between the Colony and Matos Guerra's poetry allows for the dramatization of the tension in the Colony's life: on one hand, the new land is seen as a virtuous paradise; and, on the other, as a place where its people and resources are exploited and corrupted. The first view of the Colony is depicted by Matos Guerra Lyrical poetry, thus, in the first …

We Subdued The Body But Not The Courage': Popular Literature, Sovereign Authority, And Ceremonial Rites Of Power During The Dutch Revolt, 1550-1598', Breanna Griego-Schmitt
History ETDs
By engaging with the vast body of pamphlet literature, rarely seen engravings and images, personal and official correspondence between leading figures, edicts and proclamations, visual renderings and written accounts of public ceremonials, and songs, poems, and placards published between 1550 and 1598, this dissertation creates a comprehensive analysis of the religio-political relations and social change in the Low Countries. My work draws upon the premises that appeared most consistently in the literature and images circulated during the Dutch Revolt: strategy and communication, sovereignty and constitutionalism, freedom of conscience, political theory in the Low Countries, rites of power, and the creation …
A Comprehensive Method For Coordinating Distributed Energy Resources In A Power Distribution System, Shahin Abdollahy
A Comprehensive Method For Coordinating Distributed Energy Resources In A Power Distribution System, Shahin Abdollahy
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Utilities, faced with increasingly limited resources, strive to maintain high levels of reliability in energy delivery by adopting improved methodologies in planning, operation, construction and maintenance. On the other hand, driven by steady research and development and increase in sales volume, the cost of deploying PV systems has been in constant decline since their first introduction to the market. The increased level of penetration of distributed energy resources in power distribution infrastructure presents various benefits such as loss reduction, resilience against cascading failures and access to more diversified resources. However, serious challenges and risks must be addressed to ensure continuity …
A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma
A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma
Latin American Studies ETDs
This research follows the movement of the American tropical root crop manioc [Manihot esulenta] throughout the Afro-Portuguese world between ca. 1500 to ca.1800. In addition to tracing the spatial movement of the plant, this thesis will also show how manioc was culturally redefined as an African crop and how this effected its reception and meaning upon returning to the New World from Africa. In tracking the geographical diffusion of the plant from the Americas to Africa, this research relies upon primary sources on the exploration of Brazil and Africa by European travelers and accounts of the early era of the …
Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García
Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García
Latin American Studies ETDs
The improbable trajectories of Mexico and Cuba give rise to compelling questions: in what ways have the revolutionary governments of Mexico and Cuba been able to practice successful defiance of the United States hegemon of the twentieth century? And how has that defiance helped to define U.S. foreign policy in Latin America? This dissertation presents a detailed examination of the contexts surrounding both the Mexican and Cuban Revolutions and their struggle against imperialist-driven interventions by the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean. I argue that through strategic decisions, the Mexican and Cuban revolutionary governments were able to ward …

From Garbage To Gardens: Urban Agriculture In Mexico City, Edwina Dubois
Latin American Studies ETDs
The main objectives of this study are to describe the food system of Mexico City; identify how the urban poor access food on an everyday basis; determine who participates in urban agriculture projects, and for what purpose; determine the nutritional, economic, physical and ecological impact urban agriculture has had on participants; and observe the impact community urban gardens have on the surrounding community (multipliers). Many governments, including Mexico City's, are introducing institutional and other policy changes that recognize, manage and promote urban agriculture. This study looked at urban agriculture projects, mostly in marginalized communities, within the 16 boroughs of Mexico …
Cultural Interaction And Biological Distance Among Postclassic Mexican Populations, Corey Steven Ragsdale
Cultural Interaction And Biological Distance Among Postclassic Mexican Populations, Corey Steven Ragsdale
Anthropology ETDs
Human population structure is influenced by cultural and biological interactions. Little is known regarding to what extent cultural interactions effect biological processes such as migration and genetic exchange among prehistoric populations. In this study, I draw upon archaeological and ethnohistoric research to investigate the interaction of biology and culture among Postclassic period (AD 900-1519) Mexican populations. The central question for this project is: how did processes of economic exchange and political expansion affect genetic exchange among Postclassic period Mexican populations? To address this question, various biological distance analyses derived from dental morphological traits were employed to investigate inter- and intra-regional …
