Mucosal Immune System Of African Lungfish, Ryan D. Heimroth
Mucosal Immune System Of African Lungfish, Ryan D. Heimroth
Biology ETDs
Conquering land was an apex moment in the evolution of vertebrates. Physiologically, the first vertebrates to transition to life on land had to adapt in order to survive in an oxygen-rich environment where gravitational forces and limited water prevailed. Several extant vertebrates including anurans and lungfish, survive droughts by undergoing aestivation. Unfavorable environmental conditions trigger lungfish to aestivate. Aestivation is a process of metabolic torpor wherein the fish will encase itself in a mucus cocoon and not move until favorable environmental conditions (food and water) are reintroduced. Aestivation can be reproduced in laboratory settings and, thus, lungfish can be used …

Effects Of Closed Loop Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Targeting Slow Oscillation Sleep On Post-Sleep Object Location Learning, Bradley M. Robert
Effects Of Closed Loop Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Targeting Slow Oscillation Sleep On Post-Sleep Object Location Learning, Bradley M. Robert
Psychology ETDs
Modulating sleep architecture to augment memory performance can provide valuable insight into how sleep contributes to memory. Slow wave activity has been identified as an important contributor to sleeps impact on memory. While the beneficial role of SWS in offline consolidation is well established research investigating SWS’s role in post-sleep memory formation is limited. Here we investigated the relationship between SWS and post-sleep learning by modulating slow wave oscillations (SWO) with closed loop transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with an aim toward enhancing learning capacity for object location associations. Thirty-six subjects were randomly assigned to either sham (21) or verum …

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to lactate, with concomitant oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide as the final step in the glycolytic pathway. Glycolysis plays an important role in the metabolic plasticity of cancer cells and has long been recognized as a potential therapeutic target. Thus, potent, selective inhibitors of LDH represent an attractive therapeutic approach. However, to date, pharmacological agents have failed to achieve significant target engagement in vivo, possibly because the protein is present in cells at very high concentrations. We report herein a lead optimization campaign focused on a pyrazole-based series of compounds, …

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Of Navajo Nation Water Resources In The San Juan River Basin, Nm: Utilizing Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge, Kirena Elana Yanibaa Tsosie
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Navajo Nation consists of 110 chapters, local government subdivisions, organized into five regional agencies. Over half of the Navajo Nation chapters have traditional names in the Navajo language that describe a local water source including springs, washes, rivers, ponds, and reservoirs. Therefore, traditional Navajo names consist of Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge (TNEK) and can assist in documenting water sources that can be further assessed for vulnerability and sensitivity to climate change. There are 52 Navajo Nation chapters located in the San Juan River Basin and 28 chapters have water related names. Water sources associated with place names will also …

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium. C. trachomatis infection is the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection and can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility in women. There is no licensed vaccine for C. trachomatis prevention, in part due to gaps in our knowledge of C. trachomatis-specific immune responses elicited during human infections. Previous investigations of the antibody response to C. trachomatis have identified immunodominant antigens and antibodies that can neutralize infection in cell culture. However, epitope-specific responses to C. trachomatis are not well characterized, and the impact of these antibodies on infection outcome is unknown. We …

2020 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background:
Osteoarticular infections (OAI), most commonly caused by S. aureus, cause extreme morbidity in children and may result in permanent sequelae (e.g. limb-length discrepancies). However, S. aureus is also a common colonizing bacteria of skin and a cause of soft tissue abscesses. Virulence determinants for S. aureus are likely complex, and may include the genetic composition of the isolate, the host immune response and the transcriptomic profile of the organism. A necessary first-step in characterizing these virulence factors includes assessing virulence gene carriage between S. aureus isolates from children with OAIs and from less virulent isolates.
Methods:
S. aureus …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE) can produce long-term neurodevelopmental deficits and impaired executive function. Alcohol exposure during gestation is associated with impaired fetal development caused by placental insufficiency. The impact following PAE and placental insufficiency (PI) remains unknown. Utilizing a three-dimensional (3D) Sholl analysis, we hypothesized that PAE+PI will result in decreased neuronal complexity within the frontal cortex, a region critical to executive functioning.
Pregnant Long-Evans rats voluntarily drank 5% ethanol or saccharin water until embryonic day 18 (E18) to mimic moderate PAE. On E19, a laparotomy was performed to occlude the uterine artery for 60 minutes to induce PI. The …

Introducing The Self-Cleaning Filtration For Water Quality Sensors (Sc-Flawless) System, Aashish Sanjay Khandelwal
Civil Engineering ETDs
Sensor-based, semi-continuous observations of water quality parameters have become critical to understanding how changes in land use, management, and rainfall-runoff processes impact water quality at diurnal to multi-decadal scales. While some commercially available water quality sensors function adequately under a range of turbidity conditions, other instruments, including those used to measure nutrient concentrations, cease to function in high turbidity waters (> 100 NTU) commonly found in large rivers, arid-land rivers, and coastal areas. This is particularly true during storm events, when increases in turbidity are often concurrent with increases in nutrient transport. Here, we present the development and validation of …

Notch signaling is often involved in cancer cell initiation and proliferation. Aberrant Notch activation underlies more than 50% of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL); accordingly, chemicals disrupting Notch signaling are of potential to treat Notch-dependent cancer. Here, we developed a flow cytometry-based high-throughput assay to identify compounds that disrupt the interactions of DNA and RBPJ, the major downstream effector of Notch signaling. From 1492 compounds, we identified 18 compounds that disrupt RBPJ-DNA interactions in a dose-dependent manner. Cell-based assays further revealed that auranofin downregulates Notch-dependent transcription and decreases RBPJ-chromatin interactions in cells. Most strikingly, T-ALL cells that depend on Notch …

With the advent of small molecule inhibitors, sustained responses in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients have been achieved. Ibrutinib, an inhibitor of Bruton’s tyr- osine kinase (BTK), is a particularly potent treatment for CLL, with overall response rates of 82% in treatment-naive and 43% in relapsed-refractory patients [1]. These responses are accompanied by transient lymphocytosis in 50–70% of patients and a concomitant reduction of tumor burden in lymphoid organs [2]. We have recently demonstrated that the high-risk, CD49d-high CLL subgroup [3] displays reduced lymphocytosis and minor lymph node shrinkage upon ibru- tinib treatment [4]. CD49d is the alpha subunit of …

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the commonest biliary tract cancer with an ill-defined etiology. We examined the role of Cd+2 exposures in a primary human gallbladder (GB) cell line model in this study. Cd+2 exposures induced decreased cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, altered Akt/ERK signaling pathway activation, PGE2 and COX-2 expression in a human primary gallbladder epithelial cell model. Pharmacological inhibitors were used to determine the key drivers of elevated COX-2 expression due to Cd+2 exposure. Our results show Cd+2 causes a dose- dependent reduction in GB cell viability (EC50 value – 18.6 μM). Dose-dependent activation of phospho-Akt and …

In recent debates, there are arguments on the role of anger in order to preserve social justice. For instance, in open democracy net, there is promoted phrase: "anger is the language of social justice." Others call for anger fueled with love (Sisonke Msimangs). Is that true? Is it achievable, the so-called "anger with love?"

Privacy As A Civil Right, Alvaro M. Bedoya
Privacy As A Civil Right, Alvaro M. Bedoya
New Mexico Law Review
As the first U.S.-born Hispanic senator, Senator Dennis Chávez of New Mexico left a rich legacy of advocacy for civil rights and civil liberties. In this lecture, the fourth U.S. Senator Dennis Chávez Endowed Lecture on Law and Civil Rights, I explore an idea at the intersection of those two bodies of law: the right to privacy. In 2020, the hallmark of surveillance is its ubiquity; “everyone is watched.” Unfortunately, this discourse erases the fact that, across American history, the burdens of government surveillance have fallen overwhelmingly on the shoulders of immigrants, heretics, people of color, the poor, and anyone …

The Investigation Of Surface Structures On Various Pathogens And Their Interactions With The Human Immune System, Carmen M. Villalobos
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
The cell surface is the first interface the host immune system encounters and
its investigation has led to a better understanding of cellular biology and types of
pathways that pathogens target in a host cell. The cell surface has evolved to include
many functions such as manipulation of the cytoskeleton, cell signaling, membrane
trafficking, adhesion, and integration into host tissue. The pathogens of interest are
the pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans, and the parasite, Giardia lamblia and we
investigate the consequences of drug treatments on the cell surface, leading to
promising new targets.

In Neutrosophic Logic, a basic assertion is that there are variations of about everything that we can measure; the variations surround three parameters called T, I, F (truth, indeterminacy, falsehood) which can take a range of values. A previous paper in IJNS, 2020 shortly reviews the links among aether and matter creation from the perspective of Neutrosophic Logic. In any case, matter creation process in nature stays a major puzzle for physicists, scientists and other science analysts. To this issue neutrosophic logic offers an answer: "unmatter." This paper examines an extended model of unmatter, to incorporate issue soul solidarity. So, …
A Rhetorical Analysis Through American Indian/Indigenous Tribal Leadership: The Rhetorics Of Four North American Tribal Leaders, Loyola Bird

I establish that there are American Indian rhetoric(s) still in place today, evidenced by the four tribal North American leaders that I interviewed. This dissertation project’s main focus was to examine their rhetorical practices and strategies, situated within tribally local, national and global political contexts. Tribal leaders are responsible for the management and leadership of American Indian/Indigenous nations throughout North America. Therefore, they must continue to create, utilize, and develop rhetorical strategies that enhance the art of persuasion for two different audiences (native and nonnative) for diverse reasons. The rhetorical settings may have changed slightly from when Sarah Winnemucca, Paiute, …

New Mexican visual art and culture, as molded by state-sanctioned endeavors, is often casted in order to conceal the tension, conflict, and violence of settler colonialism and imperialism. Widely known myths of empire, such as the Tricultural myth, create a visualizing enterprise through which settler colonial logics transit and create political material reality. This thesis explores the following questions: How do New Mexican Hispanos and queer Chicanxs position themselves in relation to the logics of settler colonialism and empire? How are they positioned in relation to settler colonialism and empire? On the one hand, I argue that the state of …

Rapid and haphazard infrastructural expansion often contributes to large negative externalities in cities. Environmental problems like air pollution and degradation of quality-of-life elements in an urban settlement are attributed to urban sprawl. Evidence based planning tools need to be developed which can help manage the rapid urbanization that is taking place in the developing world. In this context, we examine the relationship between health outcomes and the different spatial- temporal aspects of an urban-built environment in Siddharthanagar Metropolitan City which is a major settlement in southwestern Nepal. We attempt to identify the aspects of built environment which are closely associated …
The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek
The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek
Art & Art History ETDs
Scholars once considered Inka khipus (14th-16th CE) to be a technological development unique to the Inka Empire. We now know that the earlier central Andean Wari (6th-11th CE) also made use of khipus, calling into question the Inka primacy of the technology. Understanding the origins and transformation of khipu notation in the Andes sheds light on the ways that information technologies figured into Andean state formation and administration, and impacts larger understandings of how tactile notational systems develop into writing and information storage. This study articulates how, just as the Inka inherited khipu technology …
