Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs) randomized to erythropoietin have better or worse kidney-related outcomes during hospitalization and at 22-26 months of corrected gestational age (cGA) compared with those randomized to placebo.

STUDY DESIGN: We performed an ancillary study to a multicenter double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of erythropoietin in ELGANs.

RESULTS: The prevalence of severe (stage 2 or 3) acute kidney injury (AKI) was 18.2%. We did not find a statistically significant difference between those randomized to erythropoietin vs placebo for in-hospital primary (severe AKI) or secondary outcomes (any AKI and serum creatinine/cystatin C values …

Developing The Minimum Dataset For The New Mexico Decedent Image Database, Shamsi Daneshvari Berry, Philip J. Kroth, Heather J H Edgar, Teddy D. Warner

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: A minimum dataset (MDS) can be determined ad hoc by an investigator or small team; by a metadata expert; or by using a consensus method to take advantage of the global knowledge and expertise of a large group of experts. The first method is the most commonly applied.

OBJECTIVE: Here, we describe a use of the third approach using a modified Delphi method to determine the optimal MDS for a dataset of full body computed tomography scans. The scans are of decedents whose deaths were investigated at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator and constitute the New …

Applications Of Evidence Theory To High-Consequence Systems Safety, Christina Marie Deffenbaugh May 2021

Applications Of Evidence Theory To High-Consequence Systems Safety, Christina Marie Deffenbaugh

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Issues linked to abnormal environments (like high-consequence systems safety, e.g., nuclear weapon components, bridges, apartment buildings, etc.) may have insufficient information to use either classical statistical methods or Bayesian approaches for calculating associated probabilistic risks, so there is often a requirement for another method that can deal with a low-information situation to obtain a risk assessment. Belief/plausibility measures of uncertainty from A. P. Dempster and G. Shafer’s Evidence Theory is one such method. This thesis has two goals. First, a brief discussion on belief/plausibility measures as an application of Evidence Theory will familiarize the audience with its history and how …

Climatic Controls Of Plant Productivity, Phenology, And Physiology In Drylands, Alesia Jane Hallmark, Scott L. Collins, Marcy E. Litvak, Christopher D. Lippitt, Andrew D. Richardson

Biology ETDs

Drylands play a critical role in global carbon dynamics. Anthropogenic climate change is causing these hot and dry regions to become increasingly hotter, drier, and more variable. This is especially concerning as drylands are some of the most sensitive regions to changes in aridity. It is critical to understand how dryland plant species might react to a changing climate. In this dissertation, I explored the relative effects of plant community composition and dominant species abundance on determining ecosystem-wide carbon dynamics. I compared the population stability of 98 dryland plant species and related stability to phenological traits. Lastly, I related branch …

The Phylogeography And Molecular Systematics Of Woodrats (Genus: Neotoma) In The American Southwest, Katrina M. Derieg May 2021

The Phylogeography And Molecular Systematics Of Woodrats (Genus: Neotoma) In The American Southwest, Katrina M. Derieg

Biology ETDs

The American Southwest is a region where many biomes converge, harboring a wide variety of habitats ranging from desert to alpine environments. Habitat heterogeneity and the confluence of multiple species ranges make the American Southwest a biodiversity hotspot. Climate cycling throughout the Quaternary has driven the dynamics of changes in species’ ranges that are recorded by genetic signatures. For example, range expansion may lead to secondary contact between previously isolated populations or species. Contact can result in multiple evolutionary outcomes, including hybridization or the reinforcement and maintenance of independent lineages. I used multi-locus species tree methods to re-examine the nominal …

Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers, Jason Moore, Louis Scuderi

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Multiple linear regression was used to determine the relationships between diversity-independent factors (i.e., abiotic, climatic) 2, 5, and 10 Myrs-prior to the most elevated Phanerozoic extinctions. We constructed five abiotic variables from Phanerozoic proxy records1–5 to compare to extinction rates: mean temperature, temperature instability, carbon cycle instability, continental weathering rates, and habitat instability. All three models were statistically significant (P < 0.05) and explained > 70% of the variation in Alroy’s6 three-timer generic extinction rates. However, the 2 Myr-prior model explained the most variance in extinction rates and had the most predictive power, based on adjusted and predictive R2 (~ 72% and 41%, respectively). Carbon …

Give Me A Story Memorable Enough, And I Shall Move The World: A Proto-Typology Of Storytelling In Online Petitions Of Human Rights International Non-Governmental Organizations, Aaron Kelly Anderson

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

This study investigated the storytelling elements of 81 online petitions from 10 human rights international non-governmental organizations (HR-INGOs). The purpose was to analyze the content, structure, and context of the stories in these petitions and reconcile them into a typology—or “proto-typology,” since it was based on a specific sample of HR-INGOs and was intended for future studies to build upon. The study adapted the combined content-analysis (CCA) methodology devised by Hamad et al. (2016). There were three text-mining techniques (word frequency analysis, sentiment analysis, and hierarchical clustering) and then a qualitative stage of narrative inquiry to conduct the data analysis …

Heidegger And The Second Nature Of Entities: Sense, Ontology, And Normativity, Graham C. Bounds Apr 2021

Heidegger And The Second Nature Of Entities: Sense, Ontology, And Normativity, Graham C. Bounds

Philosophy ETDs

This dissertation is concerned with the meaning or content of empirical thought and its relationship to the natural world. More specifically, I seek to develop a response to a problem influentially posed by John McDowell in Mind and World, and elaborated in various forms throughout his work, according to which our understanding of such content is positioned between two competing demands about how it is determined: by the way the world is, and by the trappings of a human form of life, in particular, language.

That response is worked out primarily by appeal to the early work of Martin …

Heterogeneity In Hosts And Environment: Implications For Schistosomiasis Control, Larissa Celeste Anderson Apr 2021

Heterogeneity In Hosts And Environment: Implications For Schistosomiasis Control, Larissa Celeste Anderson

Biology ETDs

Schistosomiasis is a widespread neglected parasitic disease, endemic in 54 countries, for which 290 million people needed treatment in 2018. A major Schistosoma species, Schistosoma mansoni, is sustained via a life cycle that includes both human and snail hosts. Mathematical models of S. mansoni transmission are an integral tool for elucidating the complexities of the transmission cycle, interactions between parasite species and for the estimation of the impact of intervention efforts. We designed both deterministic and stochastic mathematical models to understand the impact of heterogeneity in host and parasite composition on projected infection control. These models indicate the impact of …

Is The Skeletal Muscle Hypoxic Response To Exercise Different Between Endurance Trained And Untrained Individuals?, Roberto C. Nava, Zachary Fennel, Zachary Mckenna, Quint Berkemeier, Flávio De Castro Magalhães, Michael Deyhle, Fabiano Amorim, Christine Mermier

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

It was previously hypothesized that endurance exercise training blunts the hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) response to acute exercise. We investigated whether training status influences the skeletal muscle HIF-1 response to acute exercise. 7 endurance athletes and 8 untrained controls performed a bout of cycling exercise. Skeletal muscle protein levels of HIF-1α and its inhibitors, prolyl hydroxylase 2 (PHD2), factor inhibiting HIF (FIH) and von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) were measured pre, post and 3h post-exercise. HIF-1 target gene expression was assessed via rtPCR and RNA-sequencing. Baseline protein levels of FIH and PHD2 were greater in the trained group. The exercise-induced increase …

Language Co-Activation In Novice And Intermediate L2 Learners, Nicholas Sulier Apr 2021

Language Co-Activation In Novice And Intermediate L2 Learners, Nicholas Sulier

Linguistics ETDs

One of the most intriguing aspects of bilingual speakers and signers is their ability to access both languages simultaneously. Though much research has been dedicated to understanding how two languages interact, or co-activate, within proficient bilinguals, less is understood about how and when novice and intermediate learners develop similar cross-language interactions. Thus, the current study aimed to uncover at what stages during novice and intermediate L2 development co-activation can be detected. It also investigated possible mechanisms behind co-activation. Specifically, the study attempted to clarify if any detected co-activation amongst L2 learners is dependent on associations between lexical and conceptual representations, …

Cultivating The Future: Globalized Competition And Environmental Interactions In The New Mexico Chile Industry, Holly Patricia Brause Apr 2021

Cultivating The Future: Globalized Competition And Environmental Interactions In The New Mexico Chile Industry, Holly Patricia Brause

Anthropology ETDs

Despite the importance of chile to New Mexico, the future of the chile industry in the state is uncertain. Since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, chile producers in New Mexico have struggled to compete in a globalized marketplace. Additionally, predicted environmental problems, like impending water shortages and climate change, cast further doubt about the industry’s future. In this dissertation, I show how the New Mexico chile industry has become a binational endeavor. I examine the multiple future-making projects that are being undertaken by individuals and groups involved in the chile industry as they …

Exploring The Interaction Of Amphiphilic Mycobacterial Lipoarabinomannan With Lipoproteins: Implications For Blood-Based Diagnosis, Shailja Jakhar Apr 2021

Exploring The Interaction Of Amphiphilic Mycobacterial Lipoarabinomannan With Lipoproteins: Implications For Blood-Based Diagnosis, Shailja Jakhar

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Currently, over one-third of the global population is infected with tuberculosis (TB), one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases. The current gold standard for TB diagnosis is microbiological culture, which can take up to 6-8 weeks, which is not conducive to timely treatment. There are no reliable diagnostics for TB. Disease manifestation and outcome of diagnostic tests for TB are influenced by co-morbidities such as HIV co-infection, further complicating diagnostics development. Thus, there is a need for reliable diagnostics for TB. This is especially true in pediatric populations where the differential disease presentation further complicates outcomes.

Changing And Transitioning Name Narratives: The De.E.P. Standpoints Of Identities, Pauline C. Alvarez Apr 2021

Changing And Transitioning Name Narratives: The De.E.P. Standpoints Of Identities, Pauline C. Alvarez

Communication ETDs

The Changing and Transitioning Name Narrative project is a replicated study from the Name Narrative Project (2014) by Montoya, Vasquez, and Martínez. The changing and/or transitioning of names relates to a Decolonial Embodiment Process (DE.E.P.) that speaks to an internal process of how individuals break away from colonial powers. Furthermore, the study highlights nine (eight volunteers and the author’s) Name Narratives to investigate their realities that express an individual experience and shared standpoints. Importantly, the changing and/or transitioning of names is not an act to disrespect parents or name givers, but a profound self-love indication that is represented through materialize …

Functional Changes In Fortified Places: Strategy And Defensive Architecture In The Medieval And Early Modern Eras, Scott Kirk Apr 2021

Functional Changes In Fortified Places: Strategy And Defensive Architecture In The Medieval And Early Modern Eras, Scott Kirk

Anthropology ETDs

Castles – defined as the fortified residences of a militarized elite class – are a global, cross-cultural phenomenon rather than a historically particular development in medieval Europe. Pairing Niche Construction Theory (NCT) with the Lévi-Straussian concept of the House, this research combines architectural, statistical, and geospatial analyses for a sample of castles from medieval European, western colonial, and nonwestern societies to show: (1) castle building is a recurring feature of competition in stratified pre-industrial societies, (2) geography and topography constrain castle location and function, and (3) changes in castle placement, design and elaboration reflect the changing nature of social, economic …

Animal Texts: Critical Animal Concepts In Environmental Literature For The Anthropocene, Lauren Perry Apr 2021

Animal Texts: Critical Animal Concepts In Environmental Literature For The Anthropocene, Lauren Perry

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation examines how key environmental texts from the late nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries portray animals and the changing conception of animal lives. Beginning with short stories by Sarah Orne Jewett and Jack London, the first chapter examines how early environmentally-minded writers developed animals' independent subjectivity. The second chapter analyzes how Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac (1949) and Sarah Carson’s Silent Spring (1962) promote ecological awareness by paying attention to animal time. Chapter three argues that Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire (1968) develops a layered understanding of animal consciousness. Chapter four contends that Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge (1991) merges …

Can “Asians” Truly Be Americans?, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

Recent, tragic events have brought more attention to hate and bias crimes against Asian Americans. It is important to address these crimes and prevent them in the future, but the discourse on Asian Americans should not end there. Many non-Asian Americans are unaware or only superficially aware of the vast diversity that exists among us, along with the challenges posed by that diversity. Some have basic knowledge of the immigration and exclusion of Asian Americans, the internment of Japanese Americans which was upheld in Korematsu v. United States, and the “model minority stereotype”, but these are Asian Americans 101. This …

Design.—: We conducted a biosafety risk assessment for autopsy workers using the process developed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention …

How Do Dairy Feedlot Size And Land Use Practices Affect Groundwater Quality Over Time? A Preliminary Study In New Mexico, Nancy J. Mcduffie Apr 2021

How Do Dairy Feedlot Size And Land Use Practices Affect Groundwater Quality Over Time? A Preliminary Study In New Mexico, Nancy J. Mcduffie

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Agricultural activities in general and dairy operations in particular, have been identified as a potentially significant source of nitrate contamination in groundwater. The late 1990s was a period of rapid growth for New Mexico’s dairy industry. The New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service reports that the industry grew from 105 producers and 80,000 cows statewide in 1990 to 175 producers and 310,000 cows in 2003, to 145 producers and 323,000 cows in 2015. New Mexico now ranks ninth in the nation in milk production by volume, fifth in the nation for cheese production, and has the largest number of …

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The Bluff River Trail (BRT) is a future 10+ mile trail along the San Juan River corridor in the 4-Corners region of the Southwestern United States. By asking, what is the land ethic of the Bluff Community? this qualitative study identifies behaviors and beliefs, or land ethics, between seven Bluff residents and the San Juan River corridor. A land ethic contributes to the social re/production of space; therefore, third space theory contextualizes intersecting and contradicting spatialities evidenced in data. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and focus groups. I used a qualitative content analysis pulling from grounded theory to …

T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy with inferior outcome compared with that of B cell ALL. Here, we show that Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) was upregulated in high-risk T-ALL with KMT2A rearrangements (KMT2A-R) or an immature immunophenotype. In KMT2A-R cells, we identified RUNX2 as a direct target of the KMT2A chimeras, where it reciprocally bound the KMT2A promoter, establishing a regulatory feed-forward mechanism. Notably, RUNX2 was required for survival of immature and KMT2A-R T-ALL cells in vitro and in vivo. We report direct transcriptional regulation of CXCR4 signaling by RUNX2, thereby promoting chemotaxis, adhesion, …

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, infiltrating, infecting, and devastating communities in all locations of varying demographics. An overwhelming majority of published literature on the pathologic findings associated with COVID-19 is either from living clinical cohorts or from autopsy findings of those who died in a medical care setting, which can confound pure disease pathology. A relatively low initial infection rate paired with a high biosafety level enabled the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator to conduct full autopsy examinations on suspected COVID-19-related deaths. Full autopsy examination on the first 20 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein (S) plays critical roles in host cell entry. Non-synonymous substitutions affecting S are not uncommon and have become fixed in a number of SARS-CoV-2 lineages. A subset of such mutations enable escape from neutralizing antibodies or are thought to enhance transmission through mechanisms such as increased affinity for the cell entry receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Independent genomic surveillance programs based in New Mexico and Louisiana contemporaneously detected the rapid rise of numerous clade 20G (lineage B.1.2) infections carrying a Q677P substitution in S. The variant was first detected in …
