“The End Of One Shall Be The End Of All”: Solidarity In 19th Century African American Texts, David Puthoff Jun 2021

“The End Of One Shall Be The End Of All”: Solidarity In 19th Century African American Texts, David Puthoff

English Language and Literature ETDs

This project examines how African American authors imagined solidarity through documents before, during, and after the Civil War. While solidarity as a framework has yet to be elucidated for literary studies, I draw on political theory and especially the works of the authors themselves to examine how solidarity as a strategy operates to facilitate cooperation between people of different or similar races or occupations in the periods of abolitionism, war, Reconstruction, and Redemption. I argue that these authors remember, imagine, and articulate small scale acts such as listening, organizing, making material aid, promoting literacy, and fundraising in the pursuit of …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Human natural defense mechanisms against SARS-CoV-2 are largely unknown. Serine proteases (SPs) including furin and TMPRSS2 cleave SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, facilitating viral entry. Here, we show that FXa, a SP for blood coagulation, is upregulated in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 donors and exerts anti-viral activity. Mechanistically, FXa cleaves the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which prevents its binding to ACE2, and thus blocks viral entry. Furthermore, the variant B.1.1.7 with several mutations is dramatically resistant to the anti-viral effect of FXa compared …

Effect Of Blood Transfusions On Cognitive Development In Very Low Birth Weight Infants, Priya Shah, Daniel C Cannon, Jean R Lowe, John Phillips, Robert D Christensen, Beena Kamath-Rayne, Adam Rosenberg, Susan Wiedmeier, Shrena Patel, Sarah Winter, Shawna Baker, Robin K Ohls

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: Preterm infants frequently receive red cell transfusions; however, the effect of transfusions on cognition is unclear. We evaluated the relationship between transfusions and cognitive outcomes in preterm infants enrolled in a randomized trial of erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs).

STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants were randomized to ESAs or placebo during initial hospitalization, and transfusions recorded. Children were evaluated using standard developmental tests of cognition at 18-22 months (56 ESA, 24 placebo) and 3.5-4 years (39 ESA, 14 placebo).

RESULTS: Cognitive scores at 18-22 months were inversely correlated with transfusion volume (p = 0.02). Among those receiving ≥1 transfusion, cognitive scores …

The Case For Outside Reverse Veil Piercing In New Mexico, Laura Spitz Jun 2021

The Case For Outside Reverse Veil Piercing In New Mexico, Laura Spitz

New Mexico Law Review

This article proceeds as follows. Part I sets out the current law on veil piercing in New Mexico. Jurisdictions that adopt outside reverse piercing often apply much the same test for both traditional and outside reverse veil piercing cases; accordingly, the best predictor of how New Mexico courts will approach outside reverse piercing is how they have approached traditional veil piercing.

Part II summarizes the positions of other jurisdictions to have considered outside reverse veil piercing, as well as themes, concerns, and key debates in outside reverse piercing cases. This jurisprudence points in the direction of adopting the doctrine in …

Motel Blues: Inspecting Patel’S Impact On The Law Of Administrative Searches, Casey Adams Jun 2021

Motel Blues: Inspecting Patel’S Impact On The Law Of Administrative Searches, Casey Adams

New Mexico Law Review

Administrative inspections are a vital tool for agencies charged with guarding public health and safety at all levels of government. Fire, health, sanitation, building, and labor departments across the country rely on administrative inspections to ensure that regulated entities comply with laws and rules. But administrative inspections clearly have a privacy dimension as well—after all, an inspection may involve a uniformed agent of the government making demands to see documents or access nonpublic areas, sometimes under threat of criminal penalties and always with the specter of further enforcement action lingering in the background.

Finding the balance between these two competing …

Rules To Bind You: Problems With The Uspto’S Ptab Rulemaking Procedures, Andrew Dietrick, Jonathan Stroud Jun 2021

Rules To Bind You: Problems With The Uspto’S Ptab Rulemaking Procedures, Andrew Dietrick, Jonathan Stroud

New Mexico Law Review

This Article analyzes some of the recent rules, guidance documents, policy-based administrative decisions, and rulemaking procedures used by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and concludes that the USPTO is improperly promulgating substantive rules sub rosa via, inter alia, updates to the Trial Practice Guide (TPG), an ostensibly nonbinding document that controls many broad substantive and procedural aspects of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and in doing so, avoids appellate, Congressional, and stakeholder review of such decisions.

Part I will review the established law of administrative agencies’ rulemaking authority and procedures, specifically reviewing formal rulemaking, “informal” …

Into The Neotropics: Perspectives On The Evolution Of Neotropical Myotis, Carlos Alberto Carrión Bonilla Mr May 2021

Into The Neotropics: Perspectives On The Evolution Of Neotropical Myotis, Carlos Alberto Carrión Bonilla Mr

Biology ETDs

In my dissertation, I used morphological, sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing data sets to explore the evolutionary relationships and study cryptic diversity of a extant Neotropical myotine radiation. Using a integrative approach, I described a new species of Myotis from the montane and premontane forest of Panama, Costa Rica and Eastern Ecuador, refining our undestanding of the taxonomy and systematics of the Myotis pilosatibialis complex of bats. Then, using a single locus barcoding approach I explored genetic diversity partitioning across the Myotis radiation with a focus on Neotropical species, ilustrating the phylogenetic relationships of Neotropical species and exploring their species …

Iina Dziil Be’At’Iin (On The Path Of A Strong Life): Dine (Navajo) Perceptions Of Self-Care And Social Support With Diabetes Management, Chenoa Bah Stilwell-Jensen

Communication ETDs

ABSTRACT

Managing diabetes requires a detailed self-care regimen of physical activity, eating well, testing glucose, healthy weight maintenance, and positive emotional outlook in order to maintain health outcomes. Education, clear communication, and sufficient support are needed to address challenging aspects of daily self-care at the onset of diagnosis and throughout the management of the illness. However, many people diagnosed with diabetes are unable to successfully manage their condition. Native Americans are twice as likely to have diabetes than Whites. Although diabetes-related kidney failure and other negative health effects remain a concern among Native Americans, rates of kidney failure in this …

The Impacts Of Disturbance On Submerged Aquatic Macrophytes Populations Of The Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, Virginia Frances Thompson May 2021

The Impacts Of Disturbance On Submerged Aquatic Macrophytes Populations Of The Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, Virginia Frances Thompson

Biology ETDs

This dissertation investigates the effects of disturbance (a catastrophic forest fire and decadal-level multi-day flood) on populations of submerged aquatic macrophytes (SAMs) in the streams and rivers of the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, USA. Research conducted and reported in this dissertation addresses the following research questions: 1.) What factors influence the presence or absence of SAMs in Jemez Mountain streams? 2.) How does disturbance (catastrophic wildfire and decadal-level flood) change the amount of aboveground SAM biomass? and 3.) How does that disturbance change the nutrient content (%C, %N, %P) and nutrient stoichiometry of SAMs? These disturbance events had …

"Possessed": The Phenomenology Of Immersive Theatre, Shannon M. Flynn May 2021

"Possessed": The Phenomenology Of Immersive Theatre, Shannon M. Flynn

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Using phenomenology as a lens of analysis, I investigate how immersive theatre engages audiences in a more direct and sensory way than traditional theatre. In a proscenium theatre the action is seen from the same angle. The theatre itself becomes a phenomenon in audience’s minds, each performance subtly influencing how the audience perceives the next. I investigate how relationships between audience and performers are altered in immersive experiences with no delineation between the space audience and actors occupy. The phenomenological idea of frontality places immersed audiences in positions where they are able to explore a constantly changing perspective of the …

Hippocampal Functional Activity Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Ryan E. Harvey May 2021

Hippocampal Functional Activity Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Ryan E. Harvey

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is among the most common developmental insults to the nervous system and is characterized by spatial memory disruption. There is a pressing need to identify physiological alterations that help explain this memory impairment. The hippocampal (HPC) formation and connected regions are a compelling candidate for this purpose as they are vital for navigation, spatial memory, and memory consolidation. This document is broken up into 3 main parts, a detailed review of the prior literature followed by several experiments. First, It starts out with a comprehensive review on spatial behavioral impairments following PAE and the synaptic & …

Cross-Pressured: Agriculture, Immigration, And Congressional Gop Position-Taking, Jared William Clay May 2021

Cross-Pressured: Agriculture, Immigration, And Congressional Gop Position-Taking, Jared William Clay

Political Science ETDs

Why are Republican (GOP) members of the Congress bucking their party’s positions on immigration? I argue this is due to agriculture’s large-scale production needs for an immigrant, Latino workforce. Consequently, this immigration influx can excite racial threats which can provoke opposition to immigration and minority interests. This raises an interesting question: Do the agricultural transition and an immigrant workforce cross-pressure district opinion and MCs’ position-taking on immigration and Latino interests more broadly? I assert agriculture’s economic pressure mitigates racial threats, which produces greater support of immigration and Latino issues. Using data from the Congressional Cooperative Election Survey, Congress.gov, Census of …

“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace May 2021

“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace

History ETDs

“Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” examines home ownership and suburban development over the last one hundred years in the borderlands, American West, and Sunbelt regions. In this dissertation I argue that mobility shaped urban planning, neighborhood design, and architectural identity in the Sunbelt over the course of the twentieth century. “Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” places architectural identity at the center of this dissertation discussion to understand the origins of the Sunbelt as a geographic and intellectual space. I focus in particular on smaller cities in the intermountain West---New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and California---an area that has …

Molecular Characterization Of A Unique Population Of Human Cortical Interneurons; Implications For Primate-Specific Development, Crina Peterson May 2021

Molecular Characterization Of A Unique Population Of Human Cortical Interneurons; Implications For Primate-Specific Development, Crina Peterson

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The human brain consists of 86 billion neurons compared to rodent brain, which consists of 75 million neurons, and the underlying mechanisms for the increased complexity of the primate cortex are not fully elucidated. However, an increase in specific cell populations, including calretinin-expressing (CALB2/CR) interneurons (INs), has been identified. In my thesis work, I demonstrate that human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) differentiated to neurons by default patterning give rise to this CR population in vitro, providing a method to study their development.

Chapter I reviews cortical development and hPSCs as an appropriate proxy for studying human cortical development. Chapter …

How Bojack Horseman Got Too Real: Audience Engagement And A Critique Of Capitalism, Camille Le Pioufle May 2021

How Bojack Horseman Got Too Real: Audience Engagement And A Critique Of Capitalism, Camille Le Pioufle

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

What can a cartoon tell us about the state of capitalist societies? This study examines the case of Netflix adult animated TV show BoJack Horseman (2014-2020) with the aim of understanding the mechanisms at play in the formation of the critique of capitalism. It investigates the narrative and cinematographic devices employed by the show to construct a realistic portrayal of American capitalist system and its harmful consequences on individuals and society in general.

Through the analysis of realism, self-referentiality and intertextuality, the star system, and processes of subsumption and commodification, this work comes to the conclusion that BoJack Horseman ‘got …

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky May 2021

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky

Anthropology ETDs

It has long been assumed that fishes were unimportant in the diet of past Pueblo people in the U.S. Southwest. Yet, small numbers of fish remains are consistently recovered from Late pre-Hispanic/Early Historic archaeological sites in the Middle Rio Grande of New Mexico. The end of drought conditions may have impacted food choice and fishing decisions during this time. I use behavioral ecology to understand how fishing could have been an optimal food-getting strategy for Ancestral Pueblo farmers. Stable isotope analysis offers a way to account for environmental change. I provide a refined 13C Suess correction model to support …

Stripped And Exploited Blackness: Black Nude Men In The Art Of F. Holland Day And John Singer Sargent, David P. Saiz May 2021

Stripped And Exploited Blackness: Black Nude Men In The Art Of F. Holland Day And John Singer Sargent, David P. Saiz

Art & Art History ETDs

Black representation in late-nineteenth to early-twentieth-century U.S. art and visual culture is primarily dominated by racist depictions produced by white elite (usually male) artists. Exploiting Black male nude subjects in their art production, F. Holland Day and John Singer Sargent are inextricably tied to this complicated legacy. For Day, his African series featuring U.S.-born model, J.R. Carter, extracts the subject from his time and place to present him as an exotic African subject/object. On the other hand, Sargent encounters Black Bahamian laborers at Miami’s Villa Vizcaya where he then documents his subjects in watercolor as bathers in the surrounding subtropical …

The Cosmic Desert are the designs inspired by chile hallucinations, desert creatures, and the long weird neon nights in the Borderworld. Made with love on the banks of the Rio Grande.

My family is originally from Northern Mexico but I grew up in Northern New Mexico down river of both where Al Hurricane and Nuclear Annihilation were originally created. Amongst chollas, rattle snakes, and river willow, the imagining of New Mexico permeates the landscapes. The Cosmic Desert is inhabited lowriders, taco trucks, neon adobe bars, cholas, native peoples, immigrants, punk rockers and cowboys. Just beyond the darkness, our imagination takes …
