Connecting Stakeholders To Water Information : An Assessment Of New Mexico's Leading Water Resources Websites, Kathryn Cydne Schulte May 2015

Connecting Stakeholders To Water Information : An Assessment Of New Mexico's Leading Water Resources Websites, Kathryn Cydne Schulte

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The State of New Mexico is in the process of developing a 2015 Water Plan. Water resource planners, managers, and other stakeholders are looking to the internet for pertinent information to aid in the planning process. However, a multitude of stakeholders historically lack a voice to participate in the wide array of water-sharing agreements. Through internet communication, government agencies and non-governmental organizations can utilize their websites to communicate, negotiate, and collaborate with stakeholders. This study applies Senecah's Trinity of Voice Theory (2004) as the basis to evaluate access to information on websites through website performance usability and design to promote …

La Quiero Ver~Quiero Verla: Monolingual And Bilingual Children's Variable Clitic Placement, Anita Rao May 2015

La Quiero Ver~Quiero Verla: Monolingual And Bilingual Children's Variable Clitic Placement, Anita Rao

Linguistics ETDs

This study addresses whether/how monolingual and bilingual Spanish-speaking children differ in their acquisition of grammar by examining direct object clitics in contexts where either proclisis or enclisis is possible (Lo voy a ver vs. Voy a verlo). The current study examines variable clitic placement in sociolinguistic interviews conducted with 21 Spanish-English bilingual children of Mexican descent, ages 5-11, and 71 monolingual children in Mexico, ages 6-11. All direct object clitics in variable contexts were extracted (N =140 tokens, .2% of total word count). Both the monolingual and bilingual children produced high rates of proclisis (76%, 75%, respectively). It is concluded …

Racial Mirroring, Dawinder S. Sidhu May 2015

Racial Mirroring, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

“Racial mirroring” refers to efforts by one group to match the primary racial composition of another group. In contrast to racial balancing, which takes place when two groups are adjusted simultaneously to achieve a desired degree of racial equilibrium between them, racial mirroring occurs when the racial makeup of one group is adjusted so as to reflect the predominant racial identity of the second group. Employers and even federal courts engage in racial mirroring. For example, in order to generate trust among customers, employers have hired or promoted individuals of the same race as the employers’ primary customer base. Further, …

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie Catherine Fredette May 2015

The Role Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor In Vascular Function And Hypertension, Natalie Catherine Fredette

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Regulation of arterial tone relies heavily on molecular crosstalk between endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Although it has been demonstrated that estrogen (E2) exerts protective effects against cardiovascular disease (CVD), the exact mechanisms and balance of E2 signaling in endothelial and smooth muscle cells remain unresolved. Here we characterize the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) in the vasculature by elucidating its pathway in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production and vascular smooth muscle maintenance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidases (NOX). NO is thought of as a vasoprotective entity, while the overproduction of ROS by NOX can lead to …

The Role Of Ofd1 In The Pathogenesis Of Polycystic Kidney Disease, Stephanie Justine Jerman May 2015

The Role Of Ofd1 In The Pathogenesis Of Polycystic Kidney Disease, Stephanie Justine Jerman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type1 (OFD1) is an inherited disorder caused by expression of mutant OFD1 protein and results in abnormalities in facial and limb development and polycystic kidney disease that resembles Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). The similarities in renal disease pathogenesis in patients with OFD1 and ADPKD suggest that the proteins implicated in these diseases, OFD1 and the polycystins, respectively, function on a common pathway in the affected cell types. This calls for an investigation to uncover the mechanism by which OFD1 contributes to polycystic kidney disease pathogenesis, which remains unknown. This thesis details for the first time the …

Creating An Immersive And Entertaining Game For Raising Internet Privacy Awareness, April Suknot May 2015

Creating An Immersive And Entertaining Game For Raising Internet Privacy Awareness, April Suknot

Computer Science ETDs

The continuous evolution in the pervasiveness and connectedness of technology is a subject of growing concern. Databases, smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables are all united through a single global network—the Internet. This growth has resulted in social networks and other data-collecting applications becoming a major part of life for many people. To address emerging threats and growing concerns, our goal is to present internet users with a simulation that helps them consider the actions that they take when online. To do so, we have created a narrative game, Immaculacy, which is intended to raise awareness in common privacy issues that many …

Assessing Nitrate Levels In The Private Well Water Of The Albuquerque And Espanola Basins, Meredith Porter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

This study analyzed the nitrate-nitrogen readings from three decades of data provided by the New Mexico Environment Department, New Mexico Tech, Bernalillo County, and the USGS. The purpose of this study was to assess the nitrate-nitrogen levels in the groundwater of the Albuquerque and Española Basin. First the data were compared to a USGS model on nitrate-nitrogen in aquifers of the southwest United States (which include the Albuquerque and Española Basins). Next the data were run through an interpolation model where nitrate-nitrogen levels were calculated for areas of the Albuquerque and Española Basin that had not previously been sampled. Finally, …

Mechanisms Of Low Dose Arsenic Lymphoid Stem Cell Immunotoxicity And Potential Interactions With Dibenzo[Def, P]Chrysene (Dbc), Peace Chinyere Ezeh

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In vivo assessment of the effects of inorganic arsenic, arsenite (As+3), on the bone marrow (BM) immune progenitor cells in mice showed that 300 parts per billion (ppb) As+3 given over 30 days in drinking water, produced a decrease in total BM cells recovered and suppressed the lymphoid (pre-B) but not the myeloid (GM) progenitor cells colony forming units (CFUs). 75 and 300 ppb As+3 also suppressed spleen T-dependent antibody responses. There was no shift in the general markers of early hematopoietic stem cells, CD34 and CD38, or the mesenchymal stem cells, CD105, in the BM. Splenic CD45+ B cells …

The Good And (Breaking) Bad Of Deceptive Police Practices, Elizabeth N. Jones Apr 2015

The Good And (Breaking) Bad Of Deceptive Police Practices, Elizabeth N. Jones

New Mexico Law Review

This Article questions whether a nexus exists between Breaking Bad, the popular series that regularly depicts strategic police deception, and the systemic abuse of force infecting the actual police department featured on that show. First, it focuses on investigative “strategic police deception” depicted in Breaking Bad as a potential gateway to the unreasonable use of force. The recent transgressions perpetrated by the APD evidence this concern. The show demonstrates the multi-faceted complexities of such police practices—from questionable discretionary decisions and psychological coercion, to deliberate deception and outright lies. Much of the policing depicted on Breaking Bad passes technical legal muster, …

Stuck Between A Rock And A Meth Cooking Husband: What Breaking Bad's Skyler White Reaches About How The War On Drugs And Public Antipathy Constrain Women In Circumstance's Choices, Holly Jeanine Boux, Courtenay W. Daum Apr 2015

Stuck Between A Rock And A Meth Cooking Husband: What Breaking Bad's Skyler White Reaches About How The War On Drugs And Public Antipathy Constrain Women In Circumstance's Choices, Holly Jeanine Boux, Courtenay W. Daum

New Mexico Law Review

Part I begins with an analysis of how the criminal justice system functions as a patriarchal tool of the state to control and constrain the behavior of women of circumstance. In the War on Drugs, patriarchy within the criminal justice system leads women to distrust law enforcement and the courts, and forecloses their access to assistance from a system that uses them as pawns in its pursuit of male drug operatives who are often these women’s intimate partners. Part II examines how these legal constraints upon women of circumstance intersect with women’s gendered roles in their families to eliminate viable …
