A Biomechanical Analysis Of One-Third Tubular Plates For The Treatment Of Benign Lesions In The Distal Femur, Justin Brantley Jan 2015

A Biomechanical Analysis Of One-Third Tubular Plates For The Treatment Of Benign Lesions In The Distal Femur, Justin Brantley

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of one-third tubular plates for the treatment of benign defects in the medial distal metaphysis of the femur. Benign cysts are a common occurrence in long bones, and are of concern in load-bearing bones, such as the tibia and femur. These space-occupying growths are removed by curettage of the affected region. Numerous post-curettage management options have been described in the literature, which generally include filling the defect with either synthetic or biological materials. Unfortunately, complications, such as infectious disease transmission, thermal injury, and a robust inflammatory have all been reported …

Collaboration For Success In Young Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury, Barbara Cechanowicz Jan 2015

Collaboration For Success In Young Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury, Barbara Cechanowicz

Nursing ETDs

Aim. The aim of this study was to explore self-efficacy and success in young adult survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and provide the opportunity for participants to communicate their perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and concerns. Background. Many of those affected by TBI are young adults who are establishing their social and work lives. Young adults face challenges and choices that are pivotal in establishing a course for their lifetime. Self-efficacy theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. The TBI Self-Efficacy Questionnaire and General Self-Efficacy Scale were used to measure self-efficacy, and the Glasgow Outcomes Scale-Extended was used to measure …

Neural Basis Of Positive, Negative, And Controversial Moral Processing In Incarcerated Adult Males With Psychopathic Traits, Samantha Fede Jan 2015

Neural Basis Of Positive, Negative, And Controversial Moral Processing In Incarcerated Adult Males With Psychopathic Traits, Samantha Fede

Psychology ETDs

Background: Psychopathy is a disorder characterized by antisocial and affective traits and moral violations. It has developed over time from a general sense of moral insanity to a scientifically investigated personality disorder. Prior studies of psychopathy have found abnormal brain activity during moral processing in the amygdala, posterior cingulate, and basal ganglia; however, these studies only examined negatively valenced moral stimuli. Here we aim to replicate prior moral decision-making research in a forensic population and the differences between moral verdict and moral deliberation by psychopathy. We also aim to replicate prior psychopathy research on negative moral judgment and to extend …

The Development Of Preschoolers' Living Kinds Concept: A Longitudinal Study, Jordan Tessa Margett Jan 2015

The Development Of Preschoolers' Living Kinds Concept: A Longitudinal Study, Jordan Tessa Margett

Psychology ETDs

The overarching goal of this study was to examine the structural organization of preschoolers living kinds concept and the nature of developmental change in that concept from roughly 3.5- to 4.5-years-old. Specifically, this study was designed to assess whether preschoolers' living kind conceptual development involves progressive elaboration of an existing biologically based skeletal framework or conceptual reorganization. Unlike previous studies, this study employed a longitudinal design, an extensive stimulus set, alternate indices of understanding, and complementary statistical analyses. Thirty-five 3.0- to 3.5-year-olds participated in four testing sessions over the course of one year; each testing session included three phases that …

Structural Influences On The Photochemistry And Photophysical Properties Of P-Phenylene Ethynylenes: Aggregation Effects And Solvent Interactions, Eric Harris Hill Jan 2015

Structural Influences On The Photochemistry And Photophysical Properties Of P-Phenylene Ethynylenes: Aggregation Effects And Solvent Interactions, Eric Harris Hill

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Compounds based on the p-phenylene ethynylene backbone with pendant charged groups, known as conjugated polyelectrolytes, have been of particular interest in recent years due to their solubility in water, sensing properties, and biocidal activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A series of oligomers based on these polymers were synthesized (OPEs), and several interesting questions about their photophysical and biocidal properties were raised by earlier experimental observations, which are addressed by this dissertation. The study initially focuses on the influence of the backbone length and presence of carboxyester substituents on the photophysical properties of the OPEs. Next, the photochemistry of the …

Efficacy Of A Magnetic Drug Delivery System And Development Of An Orthotopic Lung Tumor Imaging Model, Amber Mcbride Jan 2015

Efficacy Of A Magnetic Drug Delivery System And Development Of An Orthotopic Lung Tumor Imaging Model, Amber Mcbride

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

The aim of this work was the development of a novel drug delivery vehicle termed nano-in-microparticles (NIMs) to evaluate the magnetic-field dependent targeting of dry powder NIMs administered endotracheally using an ex vivo and in vivo rodent model. NIMs are a novel dry powder drug delivery vehicle containing 70% lactose (w/w), 20% SPIONs (w/w) and 10% fluorescent nanospheres (w/w). Mice were insufflated with NIMs delivery vehicle in the presence of magnetic field dependent targeting to the left ventral lung after thoracotomy; controls were insufflated with the NIMs in the absence of magnetic field dependent targeting. Quantification of deposition of the …

Structural Elucidation Of The Interaction Between Neurodegenerative Disease-Related Tau Protein With Model Lipid Membranes, Emmalee Jones Jan 2015

Structural Elucidation Of The Interaction Between Neurodegenerative Disease-Related Tau Protein With Model Lipid Membranes, Emmalee Jones

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

A protein's sequence of amino acids determines how it folds. That folded structure is linked to protein function, and misfolding to dysfunction. Protein misfolding and aggregation into β-sheet rich fibrillar aggregates is connected with over 20 neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is characterized in part by misfolding, aggregation and deposition of the microtubule associated tau protein into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). However, two questions remain: What is tau's fibrillization mechanism, and what is tau's cytotoxicity mechanism? Tau is prone to heterogeneous interactions, including with lipid membranes. Lipids have been found in NFTs, anionic lipid vesicles induced aggregation of the …

"Fat For An Asian": The Embodiment Of Asian Stereotypes In An Online Community, Mallory Fallin Jan 2015

"Fat For An Asian": The Embodiment Of Asian Stereotypes In An Online Community, Mallory Fallin

Sociology ETDs

Previous research has suggested that different racial groups have differing expectations of body size, but Asian Americans have largely been absent from this literature. Thick Dumpling Skin, a blog that focuses on body image issues and eating disorders in the Asian American community, provides an opportunity to study this unexplored topic. Thick Dumpling Skin is highly interactive and features submitted posts from multiple users. Using qualitative content analysis to code archived blog posts from 2011 to 2014, this paper studies how online users in this community come to embody stereotypes regarding the Asian body. In my analysis, I discuss how …

A Model Citizen: Ethos, Conservation, And The Rhetorical Construction Of Aldo Leopold, Daniel Cryer Jan 2015

A Model Citizen: Ethos, Conservation, And The Rhetorical Construction Of Aldo Leopold, Daniel Cryer

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation explores the changing, multifaceted ethos of Aldo Leopold (1887-1948), one of the twentieth centurys most versatile environmental communicators. Drawing on scholarship in environmental rhetoric, rhetorical genre theory, citizenship theory and ecofeminism, I argue that throughout his career Leopold offered evolving rhetorical versions of himself as ideals of ecological behavior to be emulated by his readers. The chapters analyze Leopold's ethos as it was constructed in his early-career writings in the New Mexico Game Protective Association Pine Cone, a wildlife protection broadsheet; in the Report on a Game Survey of the North Central States, his first book; in reports …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the concepts of praxis and locus as they pertain to teacher education practices and novice learning in the Denver Teacher Residency Program. The term locus was meant to suggest a nuanced and comprehensive way to consider the K-12 school and classroom as the essential location for learning to teach. The term praxis referred to adaptive expertise, or practical reasoning, problem solving, and wisdom informed by theory in practice. An analytical case study investigated two research questions: 1) In what ways is teacher learning deliberately located in the clinical setting of a …

Moneyball Sentencing, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2015

Moneyball Sentencing, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

Sentencing is a backward- and forward-looking enterprise. That is, sen-tencing is informed by an individual’s past conduct as well as by the criminal jus-tice system’s prediction of the individual’s future criminal conduct. Increasingly, the criminal justice system is making these predictions on an actuarial basis, computing the individual’s risk of recidivism according to the rates of recidivism for people possessing the same group characteristics (e.g., race, sex, socio-economic status, education). The sentencing community is drawn to this statisti-cal technique because it purportedly distinguishes with greater accuracy the high-risk from the low-risk, and thereby allows for a more efficient allocation of …
