The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez Jun 2015

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Resting State Functional Connectivity And Its Relationship To Behavior, Carlos Rodriguez

Psychology ETDs

It is well established that heavy ethanol exposure during prenatal brain development leads to drastic morphological, cognitive and behavioral consequences. In contrast to heavy exposure, the effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are less severe yet continue well into adulthood. Animal models of PAE have been of immense importance to researchers for their ability to control for extraneous variables such as socio economic status, age, nutrition, stress, and co-exposure to other substances. Studies of moderate PAE have investigated several discrete brain regions, neurotransmitter systems, and animal behaviors. However, the effects of moderate PAE on resting state functional network connectivity …

Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin Jun 2015

Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure results in cognitive and physical impairments in children, which are collectively defined as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The disorders account for the largest proportion of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals with FASD, animal models consistently report deleterious effects of early alcohol exposure on GABA-ergic inhibitory pathways. The post-motor beta rebound (PMBR), a transient increase of 15-30 Hz beta power in the motor cortex that follows the termination of movement, has been implicated as a neural signature of …

An Empire Of Dust: Thomas Benton Catron And The Age Of Capital In The Hispano Borderlands, 1840-1921, Bryan W. Turo Jun 2015

An Empire Of Dust: Thomas Benton Catron And The Age Of Capital In The Hispano Borderlands, 1840-1921, Bryan W. Turo

History ETDs

An Empire of Dust' follows New Mexico's economic history from the arrival of merchant capitalism in the early nineteenth century to the maturation of a modern, state-oriented, capitalist economy by the 1920s. Within this scope, I investigate the economic life of Anglo-Missourian-turned-New-Mexico-robber-baron Thomas Benton Catron as well as the rise and then collapse of his land-based entrepreneurial empire. Catron was a lawyer, banker, businessman, and party politician, who entered the Territory of New Mexico in 1866, and who became entangled in its fate until his death in 1921. During the Gilded Age, Catron and his cohort employed the tools of …

Temporality, Spatiality And Looking In Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) And Agnès Varda's Cléo From 5 To 7 (1962), Genevieve Pocius

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Temporality, Spatiality and Looking in Chantal Akermans Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and Agnès Varda's Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) examines the ways in which atypical representations of time and space in cinema can alter the spectator's habitual perceptions, particularly regarding the structuring of looks identified by Laura Mulvey in her article 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema'. In the present work, I argue that the use of real time in the films Jeanne Dielman and Cléo from 5 to 7 allows these works to create an alternative viewing experience, eliminating the 'male gaze' that dominates …

A Case Study In Toponymy: Sampling And Classifying A Tri-Lingual Place Name Inventory Found In The North-Central State Of New Mexico, Roberto H. Valdez

Geography ETDs

The north-central portion of the State of New Mexico has an extensive distribution of geographic names applied to landscape features from documented sources and from living oral tradition. Many of these geographic names originated from three distinct socio-linguistic groups, among which are names in three languages applied to single features. The three primary languages involved are Tewa, Spanish and English. Names that apply to topographical features and a selection of man-build features on the landscape were collected, mapped, and useful approaches to analyze them were developed from literature on toponymy, the study of place names. This study offers an analysis …

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott Jun 2015

The Effects Of Movie Time Social Learning On Emotion Recognition, Perspective Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism, James Fletcher Scott

Special Education ETDs

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world, with the latest estimates showing that 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with the condition. One of the core deficits associated with autism is social communication. Theory of mind (Baron-Cohen, 1985) posits that children with autism do not have the ability to understand that others have thoughts different from their own. This has been suggested as one of the main reasons that social communication deficits exist in children with autism. Motivation is likely the main component in effectively teaching many children with autism. Interventions that incorporate movies would seem …

Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey Jun 2015

Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar Jun 2015

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

The capability to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging in a single snapshot is a highly coveted goal for the imaging community. To be able to extend the depth-of-field while simultaneously encoding depth in the point spread function (PSF) itself allows an imaging solution which is less time consuming and less data intensive than the inefficient multiscan based conventional 3D imaging. Light-field cameras also achieve 3D imaging in a snapshot, but at the cost of greatly reduced resolution. Phase mask based depth encoding solutions have been proposed by other groups, but they all suffer from a relatively smaller depth-of-field. Recently there has …

Fault Detection And Diagnostics Of An Hvac Sub-System Using Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Networks, Christian Birk Jones Jun 2015

Fault Detection And Diagnostics Of An Hvac Sub-System Using Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Networks, Christian Birk Jones

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The commercial building sector consumed about 20% of the total primary energy in the U.S. in 2008. A significant yet avoidable portion of the energy consumption is due to inefficient system operations. The inefficiencies can be attributed to degrading HVAC sub-systems, and undetected abnormal conditions. Recognition and remediation of these conditions through advanced data analytics can reduce energy consumption by 5% to 20%. This could save about $9 billion in utility costs in the U.S. alone. Modern buildings are constantly sending messages in the form of sensor data. However, this data is only as good as the system that collects …

Heidegger's Gods: An Ecofeminist Perspective, Susanne Claxton Jun 2015

Heidegger's Gods: An Ecofeminist Perspective, Susanne Claxton

Philosophy ETDs

The aim of this dissertation is to address the importance and significance of Heidegger's engagement with the Greeks and the ways in which his views are commensurate with ecofeminism and the insights that a study of that intersection provides. I defend the thesis that a proper return to myth and art as a means by which the transcendental realities that constitute the phenomenology of our embodied existence may be better understood is what may allow us to truly dwell in the Heideggerian sense and live full lives rich in meaning and value. My methodology might best be described as a …

Nonparametric Bayes Approach For A Semi-Mechanistic Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Model, Yan Dong Jun 2015

Nonparametric Bayes Approach For A Semi-Mechanistic Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Model, Yan Dong

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Both frequentist and Bayesian approaches have been used to characterize population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics(PK/PD) models. These methods focus on estimating the population parameters and assessing the association between the characteristics of PK/PD and the subject covariates. In this work, we propose a Dirichlet process mixture model to classify the patients based on their individualized pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. Then we can predict the new patients dose-response curves given their concentration-time profiles. Additionally, we implement a modern Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for sampling inference of parameters. The detailed sampling procedures as well as the results are discussed in a simulation …

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey May 2015

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey

Linguistics ETDs

The pronunciation of the Coptic language in the liturgies of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria according to the Greco-Bohairic and Old Bohairic pronunciation standards is investigated, together with the sociolinguistic narratives constructed by two Coptic communities surrounding the use of either standard. Field recordings of the liturgy as recited according to both standards are analyzed in order to describe the phonology of the standards, and interviews with users of both standards are analyzed in order to describe the language attitudes of the users of the language. Points of similarity and difference between the narratives constructed by users of the …

Changing Relationship With The Land And One Another In Pindoyú, Paraguay, Kathryn E. Peters May 2015

Changing Relationship With The Land And One Another In Pindoyú, Paraguay, Kathryn E. Peters

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis is about agricultural transition in the face of globalization in the community of Pindoyú, Paraguay. Utilizing the extended case study method, the experiences of people of Pindoyú are documented through partcipant observation, individual and household interviews, and auto-ethnographies in order to illuminate theory on the articulation of modes of production, moral economy, and Marxist ecology. Rooted in Meillassouxs understanding of the domestic mode of production and Wolpe's extended view of the articulated modes of production, it argues that people in Pindoyú are participating in the capitalist mode of production while also practicing values incongruent with capitalist production. Findings …

A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma

Latin American Studies ETDs

This research follows the movement of the American tropical root crop manioc [Manihot esulenta] throughout the Afro-Portuguese world between ca. 1500 to ca.1800. In addition to tracing the spatial movement of the plant, this thesis will also show how manioc was culturally redefined as an African crop and how this effected its reception and meaning upon returning to the New World from Africa. In tracking the geographical diffusion of the plant from the Americas to Africa, this research relies upon primary sources on the exploration of Brazil and Africa by European travelers and accounts of the early era of the …

The Indirect Effects Of Climate Variability On The Reproductive Dynamics And Productivity Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Corrie C. Borgman May 2015

The Indirect Effects Of Climate Variability On The Reproductive Dynamics And Productivity Of An Avian Predator In The Arid Southwest, Corrie C. Borgman

Biology ETDs

The deserts of the Southwestern United States are experiencing rapid warming and climate models predict declining winter precipitation. The combined effects of higher air temperatures and drought are a reduction in productivity, which may importantly impact reproduction in consumers. Here, we investigate the effects of warming and drought on the reproductive timing and output in loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in central New Mexico from 2007 to 2012. We found increases in air temperature of 3°C during the breeding season (March—July) and highly variable winter and annual precipitation. With increasing spring temperatures, shrikes advanced nesting phenology by 20 days over 6 …

The Fruits Of Empire: Contextualizing Food In Post-Civil War American Art And Culture, Shana Klein May 2015

The Fruits Of Empire: Contextualizing Food In Post-Civil War American Art And Culture, Shana Klein

Art & Art History ETDs

The Fruits of Empire is a social and visual history of food in American art. With four fruit case-studies on representations of grapes, oranges, watermelons, and bananas, this project demonstrates how the visual culture of food provides a platform for examining the expansion and reconstruction of the United States in the decades following the Civil War. While chapters on grape and orange representations from California and Florida reveal the ways in which fruit serviced national expansion and the colonization of Americas fruit-lands, a chapter on watermelon imagery illustrates the racial stereotypes assigned to food that reinforced social divisions between white …

From Garbage To Gardens: Urban Agriculture In Mexico City, Edwina Dubois May 2015

This dissertation examines morphological variability (differences in qualitative attributes and metric dimensions) that is observed when comparing assemblages of projectile points. My archaeological case study is an evaluation of cultural historical types' of projectile points that have been assigned variously to the Alberta, Cody, or Firstview Complexes of the early Holocene from approximately 10,000 B.P. to 8,200 B.P. This analysis includes both quantitative and qualitative observations of 361 complete and fragmentary projectile points from 13 archaeological sites located in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. My analyses showed that qualitative attributes and metric dimensions of projectile points vary more through …

Role Of School In The Community Development Of Kin Dah Lichii, Arizona, Michaela Paulette Shirley May 2015

Role Of School In The Community Development Of Kin Dah Lichii, Arizona, Michaela Paulette Shirley

Architecture and Planning ETDs

I wanted to understand how the school impacted the physical development of Kin Dah Lichii, as well as, other impacts that were seen after the school came. I argue, under the belief, that the school was an asset for Kin Dah Lichii’s historic and present-day community development. The Asset-Based Community Development, Indigenous planning, and Landscape perspectives are used to analyze the role of a school in the community development of Navajo Nation and Kin Dah Lichii. The data collection entailed two phases: (1) archival research and (2) community interviews. The insight gained from the archival research is that schools did …

Multi-Scale Models Of Ovarian Cancer, Kimberly Rene Kanigel Winner May 2015

Multi-Scale Models Of Ovarian Cancer, Kimberly Rene Kanigel Winner

Biology ETDs

In ovarian cancer, disease and treatment can be examined across multiple spatial scales including molecules, cells, intra-tumor vasculature, and body-scale dynamics of circulating drugs. Survival of primary tumor cells and their development into disseminated tumors is related to adhesion between the cells, attachment, and invasion. Growth of new tumors depends on the delivery of nutrients, which depends on the tumor diameter and the tumors vasculature. Drug delivery also depends on tumor diameter and vasculature, and molecular- and gross-scale drug processes. A cellular Potts simulation integrated data at these multiple scales to model microscopic residual disease during relapse after a primary …

A Novel Family Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Genes In Marsupials And Monotremes, Katina Krasnec May 2015

A Novel Family Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Genes In Marsupials And Monotremes, Katina Krasnec

Biology ETDs

The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I family of genes encode for molecules that have well-conserved structures, but have evolved to perform a diverse functions. The availability of an opossum genome from the grey, short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica, has allowed for analysis of MHC class I genes in a marsupial. Traditional methods for gene discovery uncovered 13 MHC class I genes in the opossum. Utilization of a novel method to search for MHC domain structures discovered a family of 17 novel MHC class I genes. These genes, named ModoUT1-17, were located in a cluster on chromosome 1, unlinked to the …

Too Wet For Frogs, Too Dry For Lizards: Role Of Changing Precipitation On Tropical Frogs And Arid Lizards, Mason J. Ryan May 2015

Too Wet For Frogs, Too Dry For Lizards: Role Of Changing Precipitation On Tropical Frogs And Arid Lizards, Mason J. Ryan

Biology ETDs

During the course of the Anthropocene, humans have modified the landscape and atmosphere resulting in increased global temperatures and intensification of the hydrologic cycle over the last 100 years. Amphibians and reptiles are especially vulnerable to climate change because of their ectothermic physiology and sensitivity to changes in water availability. The role of moisture or precipitation in ectotherm responses to climate change has not been well studied, but moisture plays a vital role in all aspects of the lives of lizards and frogs. It is exceedingly difficult to study the ecological effects of changing precipitation patterns due the stochastic nature …

Mechanisms Of Enhanced Pulmonary Vasoconstriction And Calcium Sensitization Following Chronic Hypoxia, Charles Elbert Norton Iii May 2015

Mechanisms Of Enhanced Pulmonary Vasoconstriction And Calcium Sensitization Following Chronic Hypoxia, Charles Elbert Norton Iii

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

CH results in pressure dependent basal tone and enhanced depolarization- and endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced vasoconstriction in the pulmonary circulation through Rho kinase (ROK)-dependent Ca2+ sensitization, responses that may contribute to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in this setting. The free radical superoxide (O2-) has been implicated in these responses. Because NADPH oxidases (NOX) play a role in the development of PH, we hypothesized that membrane depolarization, increases in intraluminal pressure, and ET-1 signaling lead to pulmonary vascular smooth muscle (VSM) myofilament Ca2+ sensitization and augmented vasoconstrictor reactivity following CH through NOX-derived O2- production. As epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and …

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster May 2015

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Caloric restriction (CR) increases lifespan and promotes both longevity and €˜healthy-aging. CR's benefits are dependent in part on NAD-dependent deacetylases known as sirtuins. NAD levels increase with CR promoting sirtuin-mediated deacetylation of lysine residues. Humans express seven sirtuin isoforms that localize to specific sub-cellular compartments. Sirtuins and acetylation affect numerous cellular processes including mitochondrial function. Sirt3 is the major mitochondrial deacetylase and regulates mitochondrial function namely ATP levels, oxidative stress and metabolism. Given the importance of mitochondrial acetylation and Sirt3, we hypothesized the existence of a mitochondrial-localized acetyltransferase that 1) localizes to the mitochondria; 2) has an acetyltransferase domain; and …
