American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) in forest stands of North America are threatened by a destructive disease commonly known as the beech bark disease. Investigations on bark structure and on response of bark tissues to mechanical injury and pathogen invasion would increase our understanding of the etiology of this disease. The objectives of this investigation were to provide descriptions of the development and anatomy of bark of American beech, with emphasis on bark periderms. Ecology And Genecology Of Fucus Distichus (L) Powell, Eric Joseph Sideman

Growth rates, reproductive phenology, and longevity of Fucus distichus ssp. edentatus and F. distichus ssp. evanescens were evaluated in natural populations in New England. Both subspecies exhibited maximum growth during early summer, a slight decline in late summer, and a brief resurgence in the early fall. The maximum growth rates (in terms of elongation) for ssp. edentatus and ssp. evanescens was 3.5 cm/mo and 3.7 cm/mo, respectively. Populations of both subspecies showed a distinct bimodal reproductive periodicity, with maximums in the spring and fall. Individuals within natural populations were reproductive in either the spring or fall but never both seasons. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Model Aquatic Particulates For Use In Sorption Studies, Frederick William Page

The synthesis and characterization of single- and multi-component model aquatic particulars is the object of this dissertation. Particulates were synthesized from illite, humic and fulvic acids, and iron, aluminum, and manganese hydrous oxides. Characterization included measurement of cation exchange capacity (CEC), and attempts to determine surface area and the pH of zero point of charge. Each of these methods was tested to determine their applicability to aquatic particulates, and attempts were made to improve the methodology.

CEC varied with composition and time of aging. Pure hydrous oxides exhibited decreases in CEC over time. Aging effects were also shown by aluminum …

Although membrane potentials have been measured in algal cells and in large cells of some higher plants, this investigation is the first to include such measurements in mesophyll cells of elm (Ulmus americana) leaves. The inquiry entailed the development of the technique for measuring elm leaf cell membrane potentials, the determination of membrane potentials expected of healthy, greenhouse elms, and the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the membrane potentials of elm leaf cells.

Forests occupy over eighty percent of the land surface of New England and thus warrant consideration as potential sites for the recycling of nutrients discarded in sewage addition to its abundance, the other attributes that make them effluent and sludge. In forest ecosystem has attractive for waste nutrient recycling. During 1979-1982 I investigated aspects of the ecology of Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) and Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), and rodent (Rattus norwegicus, Cricetus aurata, Mus musculus) carrion communities on the Isles of Shoals, a group of nine small islands located 10 km SW of Portsmouth, New Hampshire (42(DEGREES)59'N, 70(DEGREES)37'W).

Carcasses passed through a series of predictable decompositional stages (fresh, bloat, active, advanced, and dry) defined by characteristics of carrion appearance and faunal associates.

An analysis was conducted on the genotoxic effects of water soluble fractions (WSF) of Venezuelan crude and No. 2 fuel oil on the chromosomes of smooth flounder (Liposetta putnami) gill cells.

Both static and flow-through in-lab exposures were used to determine the effects of long-term low-level WSF exposure (7%, 4%, and 2% WSF) on adult L. putnami. The long-term exposures were of 96 and 99 days for the No. 2 fuel and crude static systems respectively, and 137 days for the flow-through systems. Chromosome aberrations scored include: fragments, chromatid deletions, complex rearrangements, rings, and translocations. Chromosome count variations were also …

The Propionibacterium species possess several attributes that would allow them to survive in an estuarine ecosystem. This investigation is concerned with the distribution and survival of the Propionibacterium sp. in the Great Bay Estuary at New Hampshire. To aid in the enumeration of propionibacteria, a selective medium was developed that demonstrated greater than 99.9% selectivity from skin samples. Failure to detect propionibacteria from water, sediment, fish, and shellfish prompted an investigation into factors that may influence survival. Temperature appears to be the major factor affecting the Propionibacterium's ability to establish a niche. An increase in salinity had a stimulatory effect …

This dissertation represents an attempt to explicate and critically analyze an important movement in contemporary American sociology. This movement, which I am calling the sociological critique of American sociology, aimed to change predominant trends in American sociology. Basic tenets of sociological practice were called into question, such as the principle of value neutrality, an empirical methodology, and a functionalist theoretical framework. The goal of this critical movement was to bring about a more significant sociology, a sociology which would lead the way to the realization of a more humane social order.
