The fact that the concentration of copper in pore fluids exceeds the values predicted by simple solubility products has led to the suggestion that the copper is solubilized by the formation of copper-organic matter complexes. Previous attempts by other workers to form these complexes have utilized material that may not be representative of organics naturally present in sediments.

Organic matter was isolated from anoxic sediments of Great Bay estuary in New Hampshire. Pore water, a double-deionized water extract, and an artificial seawater extract were used to isolate organic matter from the sediments. Dissolved organic carbon measurements revealed that the seawater …

The use of fresh, inprocessed bark as a component of a soil-less medium for selected pot grown floriculture crops was evaluated.

Blends of bark of northern hardwood and softwood tree species from two New Hampshire sources were physically and chemically characterized. Measurements included N, P, K, Ca, Mg, pH, and total soluble salts on growing media and spectrographic analyses of plant leaves.

Observations, including height and fresh weight, of the chrysanthemum cultivar "Bright Golden Anne" (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat) in media containing various amounts of the two bark blends in combination with vermiculite and perlite were evaluated. Treatments consisting of various …

Studies On The Ecology Of Hyale Nilssoni (Rathke) 1843, An Algal-Inhabiting Amphipod Crustacean, Claribel Day Mcbane

The life history, algal preferences and temperature-salinity tolerances of the talitroidean amphipod crustacean, Hyale nilssoni were studied at open coastal and estuarine rocky intertidal shores of New Hampshire. Microhabitat distribution and mouthpart morphology of the sympatric H. nilssoni and H. plumulosa were also compared at Nobska Point, Massachusetts.

Hyale nilssoni was the most abundant algal-inhabiting amphipod at New Hampshire study sites where algal morphology in turn was important for algal species preference. The filamentous alga, Polysiphonia lanosa, was readily consumed and most preferred by H. nilssoni in laboratory and field studies. Laboratory studies showed that in the absence of P. …

Myriophyllum heterophyllum is a nuisance, submersed hydrophyte in New Hampshire. First observed in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hamsphire during the 1960s, the plant infested over 22 miles of the lake's shoreline by 1980. Circumstantial evidence suggests that M. heterophyllum was accidently introduced to New Hamsphire by trailered boats. Physiological and ecological data that relate to the recent success of this species in the state are reviewed.

Comparative Effects Of Gibberellic Acid And N(6)-Benzyladenine On Growth And Development Of Dwarf Watermelon Seedlings, Cheryl Diane Zack

Apical applications of 0.2 micrograms N('6)-benzyladenine (BA), a synthetic cytokinin, or 5 micrograms gibberellic acid (GA) significantly enhanced hypocotyl elongation in intact dwarf watermelon seedlings. Accompanying the increase in hypocotyl length was increased expansion of the cotyledons and inhibition of root growth. A study on dry matter partitioning indicated that both hormones caused a preferential mobilization of metabolites from the cotyledons to the hypocotyl at an expense to roots. However, in comparison to untreated or GA-treated seedlings, BA decreased total translocation of metabolites out of the cotyledons. Hormonal effects on water potential of cotyledons and hypocotyls were determined by allowing …

An integrated numerical modeling methodology was developed for analysis of non-point contaminant production and water quality impacts in estuarine receiving waters. The methodology was calibrated against contaminant source observations and estuarine data.

Contaminant source loading is based on the runoff curve number technique combined with a partial contributing area approach. Sediment washoff is used as an indicator of contaminant quantities.

Hydrographs and contaminant load time series are introduced into a set of one-dimensional estuary models. Freshwater flow and tidal height are forcing functions for dynamic computation of velocity and water surface profiles. The effect of longitudinal salinity distribution is included …

The focus of this dissertation is the transition of American women's economic positions during the last two centuries. Women's participation in the economy has developed from that of the preindustrial period, in which women were primarily partners in an agricultural economy, through several stages during the development of industrialism and urbanism, when most women were housewives, to the present situation in which over 50% of women are active participants in the labor force of an advanced industrial economy. Scientific reasoning has become a topic of recent psychological research. Studies have focused on Karl Popper's idea that scientists should try to falsify, or disconfirm, their hypotheses instead of verifying them. Results indicate that both scientists and college students prefer to use confirmatory logic on simple tasks that model scientific reasoning. The only attempt to instruct subjects to use disconfirmatory reasoning failed (Mynatt, Doherty & Tweney, 1977) though subjects that falsified on their own initiative were more successful than subjects who tried to confirm.
