This paper reviews the current poor state of our knowledge of the bathymetry of the seafloor (only approximately 15% has been mapped by modern bathymetric sonars) and discusses the efforts being made under the auspices of the Nippon Foundation gebco Seabed 2030 program to rectify this situation and to produce a publically available, complete map of the ocean basins that can be used to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 by 2030. Effects Of A Large-Scale, Natural Sediment Deposition Event On Plant Cover In A Massachusetts Salt Marsh, Gregg E. Moore, David M. Burdick, Mike R. Routhier, A. B. Novak, Andrew R. Payne
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
In mid-winter 2018, an unprecedented sediment deposition event occurred throughout portions of the Great Marsh in Massachusetts. Evaluation of this event in distinct marsh areas spanning three towns (Essex, Ipswich, and Newbury) revealed deposition covering 29.2 hectares with an average thickness of 30.1±2.1 mm measured shortly after deposition. While sediment deposition helps marshes survive sea level rise by building elevation, effects of such a large-scale deposition on New England marshes are unknown. This natural event provided an opportunity to study effects of large-scale sediment addition on plant cover and soil chemistry, with implications for marsh resilience. Sediment thickness did not …

Linking Genes To Traits In Fungi, A. L. Romero-Olivares, Eric W. Morrison, A. Pringle, Serita D. Frey

Fungi are mediators of the nitrogen and carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Examining how nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition potential differs in fungi can provide insight into the underlying mechanisms driving fungal ecological processes and ecosystem functioning. In this study, we assessed the frequency of genes encoding for specific enzymes that facilitate nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition in 879 fungal genomes with fungal taxa grouped into trait-based categories. Our linked gene-trait data approach revealed that gene frequencies vary across and within trait-based groups and that trait-based categories differ in trait space. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and disastrous consequences around the world, with lasting repercussions for every field of law, including privacy and technology. The unique characteristics of this pandemic have precipitated an increase in use of new technologies, including remote communications platforms, healthcare robots, and medical Al. Public and private actors alike are using new technologies, like heat sensing, and technologically influenced programs, like contact tracing, leading to a rise in government and corporate surveillance in sectors like healthcare, employment, education, and commerce. Rapid changes in land use, pollution inputs, and climate are altering the quantity, timing and form of materials delivered from watersheds to estuaries. To better characterize these alterations simultaneous measurements of biogeochemical conditions in watersheds and estuaries over a range of times scales are needed. We examined the strength of watershed-estuarine biogeochemical coupling using data of in situ measurements of nitrate, terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chloride collected over a seven-month period in a nitrogen impaired estuary in the northeastern US. Shape is an important indicator of the physical and chemical behavior of natural and engineered particulate materials (e.g., sediment, sand, rock, volcanic ash). It directly or indirectly affects numerous microscopic and macroscopic geologic, environmental and engineering processes. Due to the complex, highly irregular shapes found in particulate materials, there is a perennial need for quantitative shape descriptions. We developed a new characterization method (shape curve analysis) and a new quantitative measure (compactness, not the topological mathematical definition) by applying a fundamental principle that the geometric anisotropy of an object is a unique signature of its internal spatial distribution …

Factor Fiction? Identifying A Putative Toxoplasma Gondii Transcriptional Complex, Julia M. Paquette

Toxoplasma gondii is a highly prevalent protozoan parasite that is estimated to infect 30-50% of the global population, though there is no treatment for chronic infection and current treatments for acute infection may have serious side effects. Transcription is a tightly regulated process in T. gondii, allowing the parasite to successfully invade and replicate within host cells, and it is thus a promising avenue to study gene regulation and to investigate possible novel therapeutics. In our lab’s previous research, a TFIID-like complex was identified in T. gondii and found to be associated with the parasite specific bromodomain protein BDP3. …
