Occupational Therapy Via Telehealth For Families Raising Children With Autism, Carli Rita Apr 2021

Occupational Therapy Via Telehealth For Families Raising Children With Autism, Carli Rita

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Family health is an emerging practice area in occupational therapy that has potential to improve overall family health and participation in daily activities. Families raising children with autism may experience challenges that families raising typically developing children may not experience, and occupational therapy has been shown to improve both child and family outcomes. This study seeks to determine the preliminary effectiveness of the Healthy Families Flourish Program, a ten-session occupational therapy intervention program delivered via telehealth to support families raising school-aged children with autism. Four New Hampshire families were recruited for participation in this study. Weekly sessions took place and …

Nuclear Physics Applications Through The Lens Of Undergraduate Research, Tristan Anderson Apr 2021

Nuclear Physics Applications Through The Lens Of Undergraduate Research, Tristan Anderson

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Whether you know it or not, nuclear-based technologies are pervasive in our daily lives. Despite the field's politicized history, nuclear physics is a great thing—and its non-weaponized applications extend harmlessly and helpfully beyond the walls of a laboratory. In this commentary, I give an overview of a subfield in nuclear physics that investigates the role of nuclear spin within the nuclear medium. I then branch into a discussion of some of my research on spin that I have done in the University of New Hampshire's Polarized Target Group and relate my work's application to medical technologies (external to UNH). From …

The Effects Of Instagram’S Fitspiration On The Health And Well-Being Of Women, Ciara Devereaux, Grace Mcgrew Apr 2021

The Effects Of Instagram’S Fitspiration On The Health And Well-Being Of Women, Ciara Devereaux, Grace Mcgrew

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

Despite social media’s benefits, such as connecting millions of users all over the world, apps like Instagram have been linked to detrimental consequences for the mental health and self-esteem of their users. Ironically, even content designed to promote positivity and well-being on the platform, such as “fitspiration,” may be associated with undesirable consequences for users. Our goal was to gain a greater understanding of how users perceive different types of fitspiration posts and how exposure to these different types of fitspiration content are associated with changes in users’ mental health and well-being. Fifty-one females were surveyed each day over the …

We investigated changes in soil chemistry and foliar metabolism of Himalayan cedar [Cedrus deodara (Roxb. Ex Lamb.) G.Don] and Himalayan spruce [Picea smithiana (Wall.) Boiss] trees along a steep elevational gradient in the lower Himalayan Mountains at Kufri, Himachal Pradesh (HP), India. The foliar and soil samples were collected from four locations along a 300 m elevational gradient at ridge, high-, mid-, and low-elevation sites within the forested Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary that provides water for the city of Shimla, HP,. Observations at the time of sampling revealed that the high-elevation site was being heavily grazed. Soils collected at …

Retaining Eucalyptus Harvest Residues Promotes Different Pathways For Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Matter, Gabriel W. D. Ferreira, Fernanda C. C. Oliveira, Emanuelle M. B. Soares, Jorg Schnecker, Ivo R. Silva, A. Stuart Grandy Mar 2021

Retaining Eucalyptus Harvest Residues Promotes Different Pathways For Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Matter, Gabriel W. D. Ferreira, Fernanda C. C. Oliveira, Emanuelle M. B. Soares, Jorg Schnecker, Ivo R. Silva, A. Stuart Grandy

Faculty Publications

Eucalyptus plantations have replaced other (agro)ecosystems over 5.6 Mha in Brazil. While these plantations rapidly accumulate carbon (C) in their biomass, the C storage in living forest biomass is transient, and thus, longer-term sustainability relies on sustaining soil organic matter (SOM) stocks. A significant amount of harvest residues (HR) is generated every rotation and can yield SOM if retained in the field. Yet, there is little information on how managing eucalyptus HR changes SOM dynamics. We used isotopic and molecular approaches in a 3-yr field decomposition experiment where a native grassland has been replaced by eucalyptus plantations to assess how …

A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber Mar 2021

A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A cell-averaged constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector is described and applied to data collected with a multibeam echo sounder (MBES). The CFAR detector is designed specifically for transient targets observed with MBES, and operates under the assumption that background noise, including volume and seafloor reverberation, is locally stationary in time. This assumption, and the CFAR detector performance in general, was examined for data collected by a 30-kHz MBES operating in the Gulf of Mexico where the targets of interest were methane gas bubble plumes rising up from the seabed. Results with example data suggest that the CFAR detector was …

Enhanced Porosity In Self-Assembled Morphologies Mediated By Charged Lobes On Patchy Particles, Brunno C. Rocha, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth Mar 2021

Enhanced Porosity In Self-Assembled Morphologies Mediated By Charged Lobes On Patchy Particles, Brunno C. Rocha, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Colloidal patchy particles are particles with anisotropic “patches” decorating their surfaces. Several properties of these patches including their size, number, location, and interactions provide control over self-assembly of patchy particles into structures with desired properties. We report on simulation studies of particles where patches take the form of lobes. Based on the number and locations of lobes, these particles have different shapes (trigonal planar, square planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, and octahedral). We investigated the effect of incorporating charges on the lobes in achieving porous self-assembled morphologies across a range of temperatures. We observed that an increase in the charge on …

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon

University Library Scholarship

The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary …

Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

In this experience report paper we present our experience with the development of oral assessments as final examinations in three introductory computing courses. The choice of this type of summative assessment was prompted by the emergency remote instruction instituted in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester, across colleges and universities in the U.S., due to the coronavirus pandemic. The principles that guided our oral assessment design were: to develop a more comprehensive measure of student competence and mitigate exam cheating; to facilitate communication and workplace skills through student-teacher interaction; and to alleviate negative emotions associated with traditional summative assessments. …

Many research and monitoring networks in recent decades have provided publicly available data documenting environmental and ecological change, but little is known about the status of efforts to synthesize this information across networks. We convened a working group to assess ongoing and potential cross-network synthesis research and outline opportunities and challenges for the future, focusing on the US-based research network (the US Long-Term Ecological Research network, LTER) and monitoring network (the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON). LTER-NEON cross-network research synergies arise from the potentials for LTER measurements, experiments, models, and observational studies to provide context and mechanisms for interpreting NEON …

Reaction Coordinate And Thermodynamics Of Base Flipping In Rna, Lev Levintov, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth Feb 2021

Reaction Coordinate And Thermodynamics Of Base Flipping In Rna, Lev Levintov, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Base flipping is a key biophysical event involved in recognition of various ligands by ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules. However, the mechanism of base flipping in RNA remains poorly understood, in part due to the lack of atomistic details on complex rearrangements in neighboring bases. In this work, we applied transition path sampling (TPS) methods to study base flipping in a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecule that is known to interact with RNA-editing enzymes through this mechanism. We obtained an ensemble of 1000 transition trajectories to describe the base-flipping process. We used the likelihood maximization method to determine the refined reaction coordinate …

Nitrate Uptake Enhanced By Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Tropical Montane Streams, Bianca M. Rodriguez-Cardona, Adam S. Wymore, William H. Mcdowell Feb 2021

Nitrate Uptake Enhanced By Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Tropical Montane Streams, Bianca M. Rodriguez-Cardona, Adam S. Wymore, William H. Mcdowell

NRESS Publications

Tropical forests store large amounts of Earth’s terrestrial C, but many tropical montane streams have low dissolved organic matter (DOM). This low availability of energy likely limits certain pathways of inorganic N uptake, as evidenced by the high rates of nitrification and predominance of nitrate (NO3−) in the total pool of dissolved N seen in many tropical montane forests. To explore the influence of DOM availability on tropical stream N cycling, we performed nutrient pulse additions of NO3− with or without an added C source (acetate or urea) in streams of the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. In the absence …
