The Racial Divide: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March Address, Martin Andrew Bartness May 1996

The Racial Divide: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March Address, Martin Andrew Bartness

Student Work

This study examines Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March address delivered on October 16, 1995, in Washington, D.C. The address was analyzed to discover how Farrakhan responded to an historically significant and controversial rhetorical situation and to determine how race can be discussed in America. Farrakhan's address was analyzed through an application of Hart's (1990) model of the rhetorical situation. The elements of speaker, setting, audience, topic, and persuasive field were found to have a significant impact on what Farrakhan said during his address. Despite Farrakhan's explicit statements to the contrary, analysis of the address revealed an attempt by Farrakhan to …

The Self-Reported Need For Treatment Among An Arrestee Population: Results Of The Omaha Drug Use Forecasting Program, Heather A. Perez

Student Work

Over the past 30 years, the use of self-reported data paired with urinalyses testing for estimating drug use has received in creasing popularity in the field of criminal justice. Since 1987, the city of Omaha, Nebraska has been collecting self-reported data and urinalyses results from its arrestee population. The purpose of this thesis is to examine several demographic and situational variables related to the self-reported need for treatment among an arrestee population. Data were obtained from 4,255 arrestees who participated in the Omaha Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) Program from 1990 to 1995. Initial evidence suggests that those arrestees who are …

Ethics And Sovereignty, William L. Blizek, Rory J. Conces Jan 1996

Ethics And Sovereignty, William L. Blizek, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In the political arena, every nation is considered to be sovereign. That is, what happens within the legitimate borders of a nation, what docs not affect other nations, is to be decided by the people of that nation or the government of' that nation and no one else. If a nation wants to centralize economic decisions, that is its business. If a nation wants a free market economy, no other nation can interfere. If a nation wants to be represented by a new form of government, it has the right to change governments. And so on.

Outside or the political …

Service Learning Teacher Training Manual, Scott Richardson Jan 1996

Service Learning Teacher Training Manual, Scott Richardson

Guides

This is a guide for trainers who view service learning as a teaching strategy to improve instruction. The guide assumes that the participants in the training are teachers who will use service learning to help their students achieve the objectives of the school curriculum. Some of the training sessions, such as reflection and defining service learning, may be useful for non-school-based programs as well. The bulk of the guide, however, is shaped by our belief that service learning is good education. We view service learning as an experiential teaching strategy with an ultimate aim of promoting student understanding of established …

The Reliability Of Self-Reported Drug Use Measured Through The Drug Use Forecasting Program: A Multi-Trait Assessment, Charles M. Katz Jul 1994

The Reliability Of Self-Reported Drug Use Measured Through The Drug Use Forecasting Program: A Multi-Trait Assessment, Charles M. Katz

Student Work

The majority of drug use data obtained by researchers thus far has been generated through the use of self-reports and urinalyses. In fact, such methods are often the only way to accurately identify individuals who use drugs. There has only been a minimal amount of research concerning the reliability of the self-reported drug use among arrestees in the Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) program. The purpose of this paper is to present initial evidence on the reliability of self-reported interview data when compared to urinalysis, and to give a detailed description of the variables associated with the accuracy of self-reports. The …

The Effect Of Legal And Extralegal Factors On Prosecutors' Charging Decisions In Sexual Assault Cases, Jeffrey W. Spears Jul 1994

The Effect Of Legal And Extralegal Factors On Prosecutors' Charging Decisions In Sexual Assault Cases, Jeffrey W. Spears

Student Work

Most studies of criminal justice decision making have focused on the decision to arrest, the pretrial release decision, the decision to enter a guilty plea, and the sentencing decision. There has been very little research on the prosecutor's decision to file charges against persons suspected of crimes. The present study examined the effect of legal and extralegal variables on the prosecutor's decision to file charges in sexual assault cases. Using a sample of all complaints in sexual assaults received by the Detroit Police Departments in 1989, we tested the hypothesis that prosecutors' charging decisions are related to the strength of …

The sources listed on the following pages are in response to requests for information on service-learning connections to issues of resiliency and "at-risk" youth. Leadership Training And Service Learning, Ronald G. Billingsley Jan 1994

Leadership Training And Service Learning, Ronald G. Billingsley

Service Learning, General

For the past twenty years the University of Colorado at Boulder has offered a leadership training program called The Presidents Leadership Class (PLC) which uses service learning as a fundamental strategy for developing leadership values and skills. Training in PLC is focused around an eight-point vision of ideal leadership characteristics and central to that vision is the belief that leaders should conceive of their actions as they relate to the broader good in society; they should participate in community service activities and forums. The goal is to shape self-concept in ways that make service to one s community seem like …
