Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements & Children's Psychosocial Functioning, Brittawni Lee Olson Nov 1998

Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements & Children's Psychosocial Functioning, Brittawni Lee Olson

Student Work

This study examined the relationship between multiple out-of-home placements and children’s psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial functioning was measured by the number of mental health services recommended to the child by a licensed mental health professional and the number of negative behaviors exhibited by the child as recorded in the caseworkers’ narratives or mental health professional’s report. Independent variables included total number of placements experienced per child and average placement duration. Data were extracted from the administrative database and case files of the State of Nebraska Foster Care Review Board Tracking System (N=443). In addition to the number of out-of-home placements and …

Minority As A Majority: Does It Make A Difference?, Terrance J. Taylor Nov 1998

Minority As A Majority: Does It Make A Difference?, Terrance J. Taylor

Student Work

The relationship between race and crime has long been a primary concern of criminal justice researchers. Numerous studies have examined this relationship through the use of official statistics, self-reports, and victimization surveys. The results of these studies present multiple and often conflicting results. Studies examining official statistics and victimization data have generally found a significant difference in delinquency between White and minority juveniles, with minority juveniles responsible for more delinquency than White youth in terms of both incidence and seriousness. Self-report studies, on the other hand, have often found no differences between minority and White youth, or smaller differences than …

Performance-Based Standards For Juvenile Corrections, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Gaylene Armstrong, Angela R. Grover

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Total quality management (TQM) has revolutionized business, and some of its components can be applied to corrections. The importance of information for developing performance-based standards is obvious. Much more difficult is the process of deciding what information to obtain and how to use it. In the area of juvenile corrections, information about the conditions or environments of juvenile facilities and how these conditions are associated with intermediate and longterm outcomes will be invaluable in developing performance-based standards.

Local Tv News And The Death Penalty: Social Construction Of A Nebraska Execution, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

This paper focused on the September 2, 1994 execution of Harold Lamont "Walkin' Willie" Otey. Coverage of the execution by the four Omaha, Nebraska television stations was examined. The Otey execution is seen from a social construction of reality perspective. The television portrayal of a confrontation on the night of the execution between supporters and Opponents of capital punishment is seen as a mediated view of what happened that night. The public image of the death penalty as appropriate justice is seen as influenced by media coverage.

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Participants In Community-Based Organizations, Kay S. Bailey Dec 1997

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Participants In Community-Based Organizations, Kay S. Bailey

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Research questions examined variables addressing the impact of service-learning on participants in community-based organizations during the 1997 summer session. The researcher set out to determine whether young people engaged in service-learning programs were likely to be involved in other service organizations, whether they are likely to continue to enroll in service-learning programs, likely to be committed to participation in voluntary service as adults, whether they value their service-learning experience, see value to themselves and to the community, and if differences exist by ethnicity and gender.

A survey instrument was mailed to the six program coordinators in the study for administration …

Attributions For Spousal Violence, Linda L. Ratcliff Oct 1997

Attributions For Spousal Violence, Linda L. Ratcliff

Student Work

The literature on spousal violence suggests that abusive men, their female victims, and others in society often fail to blame abusers for their violent behavior. This failure perpetuates spousal violence because it allows abusers to continue being abusive without being held responsible for their actions. This study analyzed the attributions of male and female university students concerning written scenarios portraying moderate levels of spousal violence to determine whether observers tend to explain the violence using internal or external attributions. Male participants in the study reported a very low tendency, if any, to engage in spousal violence, while the female participants …

Connections Of Self-Esteem And Gang Membership, Annette C. Miller Aug 1997

Connections Of Self-Esteem And Gang Membership, Annette C. Miller

Student Work

Reasons for gang membership have been hypothesized but very little empirical research has been conducted trying to determine why individuals join and remain in delinquent gangs. Low self-esteem has been suggested as a reason for entering into delinquency and joining a gang. Research has shown gang members have lower overall self-esteem than do non-gang individuals (Wang, 1994). An enhancement in this low self-esteem has been suggested as a reason for continuing with gang membership and delinquent behavior. There are mixed results in the research examining the connection of delinquent behavior and increased self-esteem. Kaplan's (1975) self-esteem enhancement theory has not …

Factors Affecting Fear Of Crime And Victimization Of Residents In Nebraska, Melissa Megerson Jul 1997

Factors Affecting Fear Of Crime And Victimization Of Residents In Nebraska, Melissa Megerson

Student Work

Since the 1960’s, fear of crime has increased dramatically, causing a heightened interest in the factors contributing to this problem. The purpose of this thesis is to examine factors that affect fear of crime, perceived risk of victimization, and actual victimization. Data was obtained from a telephone interview of 500 Nebraska residents, 18 years of age or older conducted in 1996. Analysis of the data indicates that females and those respondents with an income of under $20,000 have an increased level of fear of crime. Those respondents who were victimized reported a greater perceived risk of victimization. Similarly, those respondents …

The Impact Of Community Oriented Policing In Omaha, Nebraska, Brad D. Cleeton Jul 1997

The Impact Of Community Oriented Policing In Omaha, Nebraska, Brad D. Cleeton

Student Work

Community oriented policing (COP) has been adopted by a number of police departments throughout the country as a new policing philosophy. Some of the departments have implemented it in high crime areas and others have used it city-wide. The Omaha, Nebraska Police Department is currently in the process of implementing COP in the entire city. This has occurred gradually since 1989 when 15 officers were assigned to work in Omaha’s low-income housing developments. In 1990 these officers formed the Selective Patrol Unit and started practicing community oriented policing. A bicycle patrol was added in 1992 and COP expanded to other …

National Service: Expectation Versus Reality, Robert D. Shumer, Jane Maland Cady Mar 1997

National Service: Expectation Versus Reality, Robert D. Shumer, Jane Maland Cady

Service Learning, General

National service has a long history in America. From the early colonies with their citizen soldiers, to religious organizations and social service, to modern day members of conservation corps and AmeriCorps, individuals have contributed important work for the benefit of their community and country. A more recent focus in the 20th century, initiated by William James' "Moral Equivalent of War" and carried out in the 1993 National Service Trust Act, has accelerated an interest in the concepts and practice of national service.

Organizational Context And Young Adult Education In An Urban Service Corps, Robert A. Pence Dec 1996

Organizational Context And Young Adult Education In An Urban Service Corps, Robert A. Pence

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

As a medium-sized, state-supported youth corps, the Wisconsin Conservation Corps (WCC) is an established institutional expression of a service corps model that has potential to address some of the educational and economic needs of marginalized young adults from "at-risk" environments. The WCC is a "second chance" work experience program that attempts to prepare 18 to 25 year-old unemployed young adults for employment or continuing education while they complete useful conservation work throughout the state. It is largely a white, male, rural-based program that maintains some crews in the black and Hispanic urban core of Milwaukee. This case study critically examines …

Schools As Criminal 'Hot Spots': A Replication And Extension, Paula M. Kautt Nov 1996

Schools As Criminal 'Hot Spots': A Replication And Extension, Paula M. Kautt

Student Work

The rise of youth involvement in crime and the increase in crime associated with schools has prompted growing national concern and evoked serious scholarly attention. Traditionally, research involving youth and crime centers on offender rather than environmental characteristics. The purpose of this work is to shift the emphasis from the individual to the environment by replicating and extending the work of Roncek and associates which was based, in part, on Cohen and Felson’s Routine Activities theory. The work by Roncek and associates demonstrated that residential blocks with or adjacent to public high schools have higher incidence of crime than other …

Family Factors In The Delinquency Puzzle, Jessie L. Krienert Jun 1996

Family Factors In The Delinquency Puzzle, Jessie L. Krienert

Student Work

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of different family factors on juvenile delinquency. Specifically, this thesis examined parental monitoring, attachment to parents, and family structure by investigating their single and combined effects on delinquency. In addition, the current study addresses the effects family factors have on different levels of delinquent behavior. Four hypotheses were tested. The first one, suggests that children living in single-parent homes will exhibit higher levels of self reported delinquency than those in two-parent families. The second states that attachment to both mothers and fathers will have an impact on delinquency. The …
