Recreation Aspects Of The Lower Missouri River Jan 1968

Recreation Aspects Of The Lower Missouri River

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Missouri, longest of America's great rivers, played an important and vital role in the westward expansion of the United States. For years it was the chief form of transportation connecting the populous cities of the east with the vast resources of the west. Generations of Americans have been thrilled by the many stories and adventures relating to it.

This is the river that for almost a century was a principal highway for the biggest adventure in North America -- the development of the west. It served in turn the explorer, the fur trader, the homesteader, and developed the rough …

Pasożyły Przewodu Pokarmowego I Płuc Zajęcy Woj. Białostockiego, Stefan Wieczorowski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

English summary

Wieczorowski S. - The alimentary tract and the lungs parasites in hares in Białystok voivodship

87 parasitic sections were made of hares coming from Białystok voivodship territory. The investigations lead to the conclusion that the hares are 100 percent invaded by parasites. Among the roundworms of the alimentary tract, the most frequent are the following: Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (78.1 percent) and Trichocephalus sylvilagi (43 percent). Coccidiosis is also widespread; it was found in 77 percent of the investigated animals.

Energy Spectra Of Auto-Ionizing Electrons In Oxygen, M. Eugene Rudd, Kenneth Smith Jan 1968

Energy Spectra Of Auto-Ionizing Electrons In Oxygen, M. Eugene Rudd, Kenneth Smith

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Experimental and theoretical data are presented showing the energy spectra of auto-ionizing electrons from atomic oxygen. The experimental data were obtained by bombarding oxygen gas with 100-keV H+ and He+ ions; the theoretical results were obtained in a close-coupling calculation which coupled the 4S, 2D, and 2P terms of the ground-state configuration of O+ in electron-O+ scattering.

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport Jan 1968

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport

Avian Cognition Papers

Rats were trained in 2 SD-SΔ discrimination experiments in which the effects of an SD-postponement contingency during SΔ and temporal regularity of SΔ duration were assessed. Experiment I showed that discrimination is markedly facilitated by the presence of an SD-postponement contingency of either fixed or variable duration. Experiment II showed that variable-duration SΔ periods in a noncontingent schedule can also greatly enhance formation of an operant discrimination. These effects were attributed to differences in the probability of adventitious reinforcement of SΔ behavior by SD events.

Parasites Of The Inshore Lizardfish, Synodus Foetens, From South Florida, Including A Description Of A New Genus Of Cestoda, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 1968

Parasites Of The Inshore Lizardfish, Synodus Foetens, From South Florida, Including A Description Of A New Genus Of Cestoda, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The parasites of the inshore lizardfish, Synodus foetens, were studied from collections taken from an estuarine canal in south Florida between January 1963 and December 1964. A new genus of Cestoda (Bothriocephalidae) has been erected with the proposed name Anantrum. Several larval and adult helminths and a dinoflagellate were studied from monthly samples of Synodus. Incidence of infection, intensity of infection, location of parasites in the host, and associations among parasites are discussed. Extensions of ranges for parasites in S. foetens and parasites heretofore not recorded from S. foetens are noted.

Some Putative Mandarin Duck Hybrids, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1968

Some Putative Mandarin Duck Hybrids, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Prestwich (1960) and Gray (1958) have concluded, mirroring Delacour and Mayr (1945) and Seth-Smith (1922), that the Mandarin Duck is unable to hybridize, even with its nearest living relative the Wood Duck. After reviewing the literature, however, I listed (1960) the Mandarin Duck as having probably hybridized with the Wood Duck, and also mentioned the possibility of hybridization with one or more species of Anas. Since then I have been hopeful that actual specimens of Mandarin Duck hybrids might be located to substantiate this vulnerable position, and it is now possible to report on some probable hybrids.

Notes On Spotted Skunks (Genus Spilogale) From Western Mexico, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr. Jan 1968

Notes On Spotted Skunks (Genus Spilogale) From Western Mexico, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Specimens of spotted skunks acquired from western Mexico by the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas in the past two decades add substantially to the knowledge of the species occurring in that region. Two specimens of the rare Spilogale pygmaea (one from Sinaloa and one from Oaxaca) are reported for the first time. Two subspecies of pygmy spotted skunk are recognized - S. p. pygmaea Thomas with type locality at Rosario, Sinaloa, and S. p. australis Hall with type locality at Acapulco, Guerrero.

The large spotted skunk, Spilogalepusorius, varies clinally in size form north (larger) to …

Optimum Spacing Of Square And Circular Coil Pairs, M. Eugene Rudd, J. R. Craig Jan 1968

Optimum Spacing Of Square And Circular Coil Pairs, M. Eugene Rudd, J. R. Craig

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

In a previous note Crownfield pointed out that the magnetic field along the axis of a coil pair is within a prescribed uniformity over a substantially longer region than that given by the Helmholtz spacing if a somewhat larger spacing is used. In the note, values of coil spacing and length of uniform field region are given for a few desired uniformities, but only for a particular "thick" coil pair, i.e., one with cross-sectional dimensions comparable to the spacing. Many coil pairs, such as those used to annul the earth's field over the region occupied by some apparatus, have cross-sectional …

Excitation Of Auto-Ionizing Levels In Neon By Ion Impact, A. K. Edwards, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1968

Excitation Of Auto-Ionizing Levels In Neon By Ion Impact, A. K. Edwards, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Auto-ionizing states of neutral and singly ionized neon were produced by bombarding neon gas with H+, He+, and Ne+ ions in the 150-250-keV energy range. Sixty lines in the electron spectrum were found, of which 43 have been classified into 13 Rydberg series. Ten of these series were previously unreported. Auger electrons from one- and two-vacancy states are also reported. Relative intensities of all transitions are listed.

Taxonomic Characters In The Genus Echinococcus (Cestoda: Taenlidae), Robert L. Rausch Jan 1968

Taxonomic Characters In The Genus Echinococcus (Cestoda: Taenlidae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Not more than four species of cestodes of the genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, are recognized as valid. The larval stage of at least three of them is able to develop in man, causing respective types of hydatid disease. Accurate characterization of these cestodes, including both larval and adult stages, is essential for identification, upon which depends development of methods for preventing infection of man and domestic animals. Because morphological characteristics of the larval cestodes may be modified according to the species of host in which they develop, identification should be based upon taxonomic characters of specimens from the respective natural …

Parasites, Predators, And Other Arthropods Associated With Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) On Juniperus Species In Kansas, E. A. Heinrichs, Hugh E. Thompson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

One parasitic dipterous species and 27 parasitic hymenopterous species were collected. Parasites were primarily collected by mass-rearing host larvae on cut host plant foliage in the laboratory or by rearing larvae on artificial diet. The tachinid Nemorilla pyste (Walk.) and five hymenopterous species, Glypta n. sp. (Ichneumonidae), Campoplex sp. (Ichneumonidae), Agathis acrobasidis (Cushman) (Braconidae), Elasmus atratus How. (Eulophidae), and Catolaccus aeneoviridis Girault (Pteromalidae), were definite parasites, and biological notes are given. Collection data are also given for the other 22 species.

One reduviid predator, Zelus socius Uhler, and six spiders were observed feeding on C. houstonana.

Reviews Of Glenn L. Hoffman (1967). Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes., John Paling Jan 1968

Reviews Of Glenn L. Hoffman (1967). Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes., John Paling

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

'This manual', the author explains, 'is intended to be an aid to the identification of the freshwater fish parasites of North America'. Judged by this objective, the book will be an invaluable source of reference for workers in this field. However as it does not set out to cover the ecology of fish parasites and furthermore as it concerns itself mainly with the American fauna, this book will probably have only a limited appeal to readers of this Journal.

The Dual-System Of Water Rights In Nebraska, George Rozmarin Jan 1968

The Dual-System Of Water Rights In Nebraska, George Rozmarin

Nebraska Law Review

In Nebraska, rights to waters in streams and lakes have been regulated through a dual-system which utilizes both the riparian doctrine of the common law and the statutory scheme of appropriative rights. Although the two doctrines are divergent in many instances, the judiciary has recognized this and attempted to maintain a balance between them. Despite these efforts, however, inconsistent principles of law developed over the years until finally in Wasserburger v. Coffee the Nebraska Supreme Court attempted to reconcile the relative status of riparians and appropriators. In doing so, the court prescribed a flexible method of equitable balance rather than …

The Sherman Act And Professional Sports Associations' Use Of Eligibility Rules, Mark F. Anderson Jan 1968

The Sherman Act And Professional Sports Associations' Use Of Eligibility Rules, Mark F. Anderson

Nebraska Law Review

Many professional sports associations have a rule that a member may not participate in a tournament, game, or contest sanctioned or sponsored by a rival association or promoter. If a member athlete does compete in a contest in violation of the rule, the association may remove the offending athlete from the membership list with a consequent loss of eligibility to compete in association-sponsored competition. The purposes of such an eligibility rule are to suppress competition from rival leagues and to retain exclusive rights to the member athletes' performances. Such an arrangement may be viewed as an attempt to coerce or …

Nebraska Law Review

A series of work stoppages by members of the defendant union resulted in a plantwide strike on plaintiff's plant in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 15, 1965. Avco, alleging a violation of the existing collective bargaining agreement, brought an action in a Tennessee state court seeking to enjoin the strike, and asking for general relief. A temporary injunction was granted and the union filed a petition for removal of the action to United States district court. Upon removal, the union moved for dissolution of the temporary restraining order and dismissal of the action on the basis that the district court had …

Criminal Law—Defendant's Perjury And Its Effect On The Criminal Trial—Mckissick V. United States, 379 F.2d 754 (5th Cir. 1967), D. Steven Leininger

Nebraska Law Review

The court has given the criminal defendant a procedural weapon in the form of perjury with which he can cause an endless number of mistrials. The McKissick court apparently felt compelled to do this for it said: "[T]he alternatives to mistrial were themselves fraught with difficulties and possible errors." The purpose of this Note is to examine these "alternatives" and attempt to develop from them an approach for avoiding the probable effect of this decision. There are three areas of judgment in which a different decision could have avoided a mistrial. These are: (1) the requirement that an attorney disclose …

Nebraska Law Review

California changed its common law when by statute it made attempts to plea bargain inadmissible. It would be only naive, given the present status of our criminal justice system, to maintain that the practice of "plea bargaining" can, should, or will be eliminated in the near future. Although the practice gives rise to serious problems, there are important arguments for preserving it. Pragmatically, our already overtaxed criminal justice system simply cannot provide the number of judges, prosecutors, and defense counsel necessary to operate a system in which most defendants go to trial. Present programs to expand appointment of counsel for …

Book Review: The Supreme Court: A Question Of Relevance—A Review Of The Warren Court, Constitutional Decision As An Instrument Of Reform By Archibald Cox, Leonard V. Kaplan Jan 1968

Book Review: The Supreme Court: A Question Of Relevance—A Review Of The Warren Court, Constitutional Decision As An Instrument Of Reform By Archibald Cox, Leonard V. Kaplan

Nebraska Law Review

Archibald Cox has written a short, controversial, and rather comprehensive analysis of the Warren Court. The book is a blend of legal analysis covering the "political issues" that have confronted the court, how the court did confront these issues, and how the author agrees or disagrees with the court's judgment. An added reform dimension to the analysis reveals some of the political subtlety which necessarily underlies many of the Court's constitutional probes. The core question which presents itself traditionally and in this analysis goes to the constant question of judicial passivity or activism. What is the charge of the Constitutional …

Revocation Of Probation And Parole In Nebraska: A Procedural Antithesis, Russell E. Lovell Ii Jan 1968

Revocation Of Probation And Parole In Nebraska: A Procedural Antithesis, Russell E. Lovell Ii

Nebraska Law Review

The procedural due process questions which permeate revocations of probation and parole will be discussed in this Comment primarily in light of Mempa v. Rhay and In re Gault. Attention then shifts to the disparity in the procedural elements presently guaranteed probationers and parolees in revocation proceedings under Nebraska law and whether the denial of a hearing to the parolee is violative of equal protection of laws. The Comment concludes by suggesting legislation providing procedural safeguards in the revocation hearing, which not only will ensure the offender a fair hearing but also will further the rehabilitative goals of the …

Constitutional Law—Vagrancy, Loitering, And Related Offenses Held Unconstitutional Because Of Vagueness And Overbreadth: Baker V. Binder, 274 F.Supp. 658 (W.D. Ky. 1967), H. Bruce Hamilton

Nebraska Law Review

Loitering and disorderly conduct statutes have long been criticized as being catch-alls whereby the sensibilities of certain citizens may be protected from certain activities which they consider offensive. And vagrancy statutes have been attacked for making no activity a crime. However, the roots of these laws run deep and their history may be traced back to feudal times when they were utilized by the lords to "protect" themselves from undesirables. Vagrancy statutes then developed as the criminal side of the poor laws. Apparently the philosophy behind such modern day statutes is that a vagrant is a probable criminal; that there …
