The Sterile-Male Technique For Control Of Mosquitos: A Field Cage Study With Anopheles Quadrimaculatus, R. S. Patterson, C. S. Lofgren, M. D. Boston Jan 1968

The Sterile-Male Technique For Control Of Mosquitos: A Field Cage Study With Anopheles Quadrimaculatus, R. S. Patterson, C. S. Lofgren, M. D. Boston

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The use of sterile males to control a cage population of a laboratory strain of Anopheles quadrimaculatus was not successful, even though 80 to 90% of the females laid sterile egg clutches. At the ratio of sterile males to normal males being used, complete sterility should have been quickly achieved. Subsequent studies of the survival and sexual vigor of these sterile males indicated that only a small number, about 5%, of the released males were actually competing with normal males for the uninseminated females. Thus, until a more hardy and sexually vigorous male A. quadrimaculatus can be reared in the …

Ponds And Marshes For Wild Ducks On Farms And Ranches In The Northern Plains, Wade H. Hamor, Hans G. Uhlig, Lawrence V. Compton

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

REGARDLESS of where you live in the , northern Plains, chances are good that you can attract wild ducks to your farm or ranch. To do so you may need to build a pond or marsh or improve the ones you now have. The center of wild-duck production in the United States is in the northern Plains and includes parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa. The numerous natural and manmade ponds and marshes along with fertile soil and favorable climate make this a region of ideal duck habitat. Many of these ponds and …

Seminal Vesiculectomy In Bulls, L. C. Faulkner, M. L. Hopwood, J. N. Wiltbank

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Semen was evaluated before and after seminal vesiculectomy in seven bulls. Volume, motility, percentage of live cells and primary abnormalities decreased, while cell concentration and secondary morphological abnormalities increased. Five of the bulls were mated with heifers and had acceptable fertility. The vesicular glands influence certain seminal characteristics but are not essential to fertility.

The Emerging Pattern Of Field Warehouse Litigation: Liability For Unexplained Losses And Nonexistent Goods, Richard F. Broude Jan 1968

The Emerging Pattern Of Field Warehouse Litigation: Liability For Unexplained Losses And Nonexistent Goods, Richard F. Broude

Nebraska Law Review

If we are about to enter a new phase in litigation involving field warehousing and warehouse receipts, then one of the harbingers of this new focus is Procter & Gamble Distributing Co. v. Lawrence American Field Warehousing Corp. This case, which grew out of the nefarious activities of Tony DeAngelis and Allied Crude Vegetable Oil Refining Co., involved the liability of a field warehouseman s to the holders of its warehouse receipts representing salad oil supposedly on deposit in numerous storage tanks leased by Allied to the warehouseman for use as a field warehouse. Because the defendant was initially …

Federal Estate Taxes—Deviation From Mortality Tables Under Section 2037, Steven D. Brumley Jan 1968

Federal Estate Taxes—Deviation From Mortality Tables Under Section 2037, Steven D. Brumley

Nebraska Law Review

A recent decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit1 has caused some discussion by legal writers and undoubtedly some apprehension by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The case is Hall v. United States and the problem presented was whether the United States Life Table 385 is the exclusive method of determining the value of a reversionary interest under section 2037 of the Internal Revenue Code. The Seventh Circuit, in allowing the use of evidence to show the decedent's actual life expectancy, found that the words "by usual methods of valuation" in the code made it …

Nebraska Law Review

The plaintiff was a passenger in a vehicle traveling north on a graveled county road. The vehicle collided at an intersection with a car traveling east on another graveled county road, which had been designated an arterial. A stop sign which had protected the east-west road had been removed about one week prior to the accident by employees of the county, and no temporary stop signs or warning signs had been substituted. The trial court dismissed the defendant county at the close of plaintiff's evidence. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant driver of the eastbound car. On appeal …

Nebraska Law Review

An introduction to the symposium issue, which is focused on the administrative process. The judicial system of this country has generally enjoyed a reputation as a system truly providing equal justice for all. The administrative process does not share this tradition. While court decisions are often questioned, the system generally is not. However, it is often the administrative process, as well as individual decisions, that is characterized as arbitrary. It is toward this charge of arbitrariness that our symposium is directed.

Some Thoughts On The Administrative Process As A Means Toward Revoking The Public Education Benefit, M. Gene Blackburn Jan 1968

Some Thoughts On The Administrative Process As A Means Toward Revoking The Public Education Benefit, M. Gene Blackburn

Nebraska Law Review

Higher education in the United States the past two decades has assumed proportions never before considered in the wildest imagination of the most optimistic prognosticator. Contemporaneous with that growth is the phenomenon of student activism—involvement, expression, and dissent, including petty insubordination and social protest. An administrative impasse arises by attempting a definitional response between the function of the internal administration of the public university, its taxpaying constituents, and the rights of the student. No longer is the public education institution justified in exerting autocratic disciplinary sanctions without reference to the procedural rights of the student. The subject of this paper …

Security Law, Formalism, And Article 9, Grant Gilmore Jan 1968

Security Law, Formalism, And Article 9, Grant Gilmore

Nebraska Law Review

The history of personal property security law in this country has been not unlike the history of a protracted guerrilla war. Right-thinking people seem always to have felt that there was something vaguely dishonorable, if not outright dishonest, about transactions in which a loan is secured by a debtor's personal property—particularly about transactions in which the debtor is allowed to remain in possession of the property and to enjoy its full use during the loan period. Exactly what it is that is dishonorable or dishonest about such transactions has never been made clear. Right-thinking people have usually found "fraud" the …

Constitutional Aspects Of Sex-Based Discrimination In American Law, Leo Kanowitz Jan 1968

Constitutional Aspects Of Sex-Based Discrimination In American Law, Leo Kanowitz

Nebraska Law Review

American law, whether in the shape of legislation, court decisions, or administrative action, continues in many instances to accord men and women different treatment solely because of sex. Such differences in treatment have often been challenged in the courts as alleged violations of state or federal constitutional provisions. But, for the most part, these constitutional attacks have met with failure, leading to, among other things, persistent pressure for a federal constitutional amendment that would specifically prohibit legal discrimination based on sex (the so-called "equal rights" amendment). In recent years—no doubt partly due to a general rekindling of interest in the …

Relevance And Higher Education: Proceedings Of The Third Annual Meeting Of The National Collegiate Honors Council, 1968, Walter D. Weir

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The papers in this volume were presented at the third annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington, October 18-20, 1968. The papers indicate our focus on the problems of the relevance of curricula to learning and the relevance of higher education to the world. Black and white students alike urged us to make our programs, our curricula, and our concerns more relevant to the moral and social issues of our time, more relevant to a truly liberal education.

Leadership Techniques In The Project Organization, Richard M. Hodgetts Jan 1968

Leadership Techniques In The Project Organization, Richard M. Hodgetts

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Project managers, because of their inherent "authority-gap", have developed a handful of techniques for supplementing their authority. The importance of these techniques will often vary with the dollar-size of the undertaking. The project organization has been in use for thousands of years. Its precise origin is unknown, but the pyramids and Roman aqueducts bear witness to its long history. In recent years a new impetus has been given to the project organization through its application in such areas as aerospace, chemicals, and state government, to mention but a few. One major problem has been cited consistently in studies made of …

Some Ecological Observations On The Fathead Minnow, Pimephales Promelas, In The Alkaline Waters Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher, Robert Thomas

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Populations of the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, were apparently common throughout the sandhills region of Nebraska, prior to the appearance of the first pioneers, for Aughey (1880) listed the species as part of the native fauna. Current data relating to the distribution (Figure 1) and gross ecology of the species throughout the sandhills, was first collected in 1954 by the authors, with continuous observances recorded since that year. The fathead minnow is a common species throughout the northern great plains and appears to reach its greatest abundance in the shallow, alkaline lakes of Nebraska. Our investigations over the past …

Distribution And Mortality Of Saskatchewan-Banded White-Fronted Geese, Harvey W. Miller, Alex Dzubin, John T. Sweet Jan 1968

Distribution And Mortality Of Saskatchewan-Banded White-Fronted Geese, Harvey W. Miller, Alex Dzubin, John T. Sweet

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

At its annual spring meeting in 1959 the Technical Committee of the Central Flyway Council recognized a decreased population of the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons). The recorded harvest in Canada and the United States had exceeded the estimated wintering population in some years. After summarizing records for the Central and Mississippi Flyways the Committee found them inadequate for management and to help fill this void, recommended banding on local concentration areas including Saskatchewan.

Ecological Relationships Of Wetlands To Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William L. Baxter, Carl W. Wolfe Jan 1968

Ecological Relationships Of Wetlands To Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William L. Baxter, Carl W. Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Ecological relationships of ring-necked pheasants with rainwater basins were studied on a nine-section study area in south-central Nebraska.

Nesting studies conducted from 1960 through 1964 revealed the importance of vegetation complexes associated with wetlands as nesting cover. During the five-year period, 25 percent of all nests were initiated in this covertype, and 25 percent of all chicks were produced in this covertype. The wetlands also provided high quality brooding, loafing, roosting, and winter cover.

Human activities have destroyed 83 percent of the 3,909 wetlands in the rain basin area. The greatest loss occurred in smaller basins. Acreages in the basins …

Water-Mineral Relations Of Quaternary Deposits In The Lower Platte River Drainage Area In Eastern Nebraska, Ivan Barnes, Ray Bentall Jan 1968

Water-Mineral Relations Of Quaternary Deposits In The Lower Platte River Drainage Area In Eastern Nebraska, Ivan Barnes, Ray Bentall

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), the degree of saturation with respect to calcite (IAP/Kcalcite), the pH, and the concentrations of selected constituents in solution were determined for water from 52 wells and the Platte River. Compared to the PCO2 in the atmosphere, the average PCO2 in the ground water was many times greater and that in the river water was about twice as great. The high PCO2 in the ground water probably results from the absorption, by infiltrating precipitation, of carbon dioxide produced in the soil by respiration of plant roots …

Rated Pleasantness And Association Value Of 101 English Nouns, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Ratings of pleasantness (PL) on a 7-point scale and of association value (a′) on a 5-point scale are reported for 101 two-syllable nouns. The ratings were obtained from two samples of 100 women each and two samples of 100 men each. Sizable differences were obtained between words on both scales. For women and men respectively, PL and a′ were correlated .570 and .585; PL and printed frequency were correlated .233 and .207; frequency and a′ were correlated .533 and .764. Women’s and men’s ratings correlated .973 for PL and .899 for a′.

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne Jan 1968

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …
