Phlyctainophora Squali Sp. Nov. (Nematoda, Philometridae) From The Spiny Dogfish, Squalis Acanthias, Dwight R. Mudry, Murray D. Dailey

Summary

Phlyctainophora squali sp. nov. is described from 23 female specimens recovered from the subcutaneous tissue of one of 440 Squalis acanthias caught off Los Angeles, California. This finding represents a new host and distribution for this genus. Phlyctainophora is placed in the family Philometridae on the basis of atrophication of vulva and anus, simple mouth, viviparity and location in tissue of fishes. The family diagnosis for Philometridae is amended to include Phlyctainophora which lacks an anterior ovary.

Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Teleost Fishes From Biscayne Bay, Florida, Robin M. Overstreet

This study includes 111 species of Digenea from 69 of 113 species of teleost fishes examined from Biscayne Bay, Florida. Biscayne Bay represents the reported northern limit along the Atlantic coast for all but 22 of the 111 species. It represents the southern limit for only one, Didymocystis scomberomori. From the known collections reported in the literature, the Digenea from Biscayne Bay appear to consist primarily of a tropical fauna. Species previously known from the Pacific Ocean only are Botulisaccus pisceus and Pseudocreadium scaphosomum. There are 81 new host records.

Introduction

This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

Our dearth of knowledge concerning Australian waterfowl has, until recently at least, been so severe as to once stimulate Ernst Mayr to write a paper (Emu, 45:229-232, 1946) reminding Australians how little was then known about their native waterfowl. The situation was especially serious in view of the fact that no fewer than six of Australia’s 19 species of indigenous waterfowl represent monotypic genera that are largely or entirely restricted to that continent. Furthermore, these include such phylogenetically significant and taxonomically controversial genera as Anseranas, Cereopsis, Malacorhynthus, and Stictonetta, the last two of which have never been available …

Delphinus bairdii Dall is a species of dolphin distinct from D. delphis Linnaeus, with which it has usually been synonymized. D. bairdii has a longer rostrum relative to the zygomatic width of the skull; the ratio of these measurements falls at 1.55 or above for bairdii and 1.53 and below for delphis. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, D. bairdii is found in the Gulf of California and along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico; D. delphis is presently found in the waters off California. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Western ironweed (Vernonia baldwini Torr.) is a member of a widespread and diverse genus. The genus is characterized by perennial herbs and shrubs. Weaver and Darland listed the increase of western ironweed, at one time sparsely distributed, as an indication of degeneration of the true prairie. They described the invasion, spread, and ultimate dominance of western ironweed in many pastures after the drought years. Weaver measured ironweed roots to a depth of 11 or 12 ft., and remarked that it was one of "the most abundant and worst weeds in native pastures derived from the true prairie." Research has …

During the short alpine growing season of 1945 the authors had the opportunity of studying conditions and biota on Mount Lincoln, Park County, Colorado, in an attempt to evaluate the ecological conditions and animal communities of the area. Of the large amount of taxonomic and ecological zoology published on the state, most has been in the field of autecology, and, except in the province of aquatic studies, little has appeared bearing on synecological relations, especially among invertebrates. The marked differences between the physiography, climatology, and biology of timberline, alpine, and other stations seemed to offer a field well worthy of …

The thesis was based on interviews with informants in Zinacantan, Chiapas, Mexico, included Chep of Apas. The topics covered are: the funeral; the Zinacanteco funeral as a rite of passage; comparison between the funeral and the curing ceremony; comparison between the funeral and the All Souls Ceremony; and comparison between the funeral and the ceremonies of birth and marriage.

Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. Fluorescing cells were also present in the feces of experimental and field cases of neonatal …

Food Preference As A Factor In Distribution And Abundance Of Phoetaliotes Nebrascensis, K. P. Pruess

Western wheat grass, Agropyron smithii, was the plant most frequently ingested by Phoetaliotes nebrascensis (Thomas) in 4 of 5 habitats and was preferred in all. All grasses were eaten to some extent; nonpreferred plants may support populations in otherwise suitable habitats. Most forbs were unattractive but all tested species of Cichoriaceae were acceptable. Plant-finding was by random searching; selection was made only after contact through the mouthparts. While habitats in which preferred hosts were more abundant had higher grasshopper populations, annual changes in grasshopper abundance within a habitat were independent of abundance of primary food plants.

These investigations were undertaken to determine the distribution and importance of Trogoderma glabrum (Herbst) in stored grain in Nebraska, the ecological factors favoring population increase in stored wheat, corn, and sorghum, and the role T. glabrum might play in disseminating internally the Aspergillus molds commonly encountered in stored grain.

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris

A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.

The mastiff bat, Eumops perotis renatae, described by Pirlot in 1966 and later elevated to specific status by the same author is herein regarded as junior synonym of Eumops perotis perotis (Schinz, 1821). Earlier reports of large Eumops from South America are reviewed in light of the present understanding of the relationship between Eumops perotis and E. trurnbulli.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …
