A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin Jan 1970

A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new genus of Pliocene Saber-toothed felid, Barbourofelis, is proposed and two new species B. fricki and B. morrisi are described. These two forms and other described material represent an unusual lineage of felids with long sabers, shortened crania, and massive postorbital bars. The tribal name Barbourofelini is proposed for this lineage which is presently known in North America from deposits ranging in age from Clarendonian through Kimballian. The Barbourofelini apparently migrated from Eurasia to North America in the Late Miocene or Early Pliocene. Sansanosmilus of the French Vindobonian appears to represent the ancestral stock of these cats. The …

Genetic Aspects Of Calving Ease, James S. Brinks Jan 1970

Genetic Aspects Of Calving Ease, James S. Brinks

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Several trends in cattle production and marketing are becoming evident. Leaner and perhaps heavier muscled slaughter cattle will be in demand through the chain from consumers back through retailers, packers, feeders and finally the producers. Emphasis on growth in the feedlot will continue. Thus, the feedlot and carcass characteristics desired point towards fairly large, heavier muscled cattle. At the producer level, increased emphasis is being placed on matching cow size, milk level, and overall biological type to available resources. Thus, the trend for maternal herds in the Great Plains point towards an adapted, probably moderate size, and milking cow that …

Systematic Infections For The Assay Of Plant Viruses, Myron K. Brakke Jan 1970

Systematic Infections For The Assay Of Plant Viruses, Myron K. Brakke

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The first infectivity assays of plant viruses relied on the percentage of inoculated plants becoming systemically infected. The use of systemic infections for assays became unfashionable, however, after the discovery of local lesions and the demonstration that their numbers depended on virus concentration. Continued emphasis on local lesions over the years led to the widely held belief that systemic infections could not be used for a reliable and accurate assay of plant viruses. There was never any good statistical evidence for this viewpoint. In fact, no thorough investigation has been published of the accuracy of "systemic assays" of plant viruses, …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher Jan 1970

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …

Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Fauna Within A Pond, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs Jan 1970

Seasonal Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Fauna Within A Pond, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A Tennessee pond was sampled weekly from June 18 to August 20, 1968, to determine quantitative differences among benthic organisms in sampling depths and dates. Annelids (Oligochaeta), Chironomidae larvae, and Chaoboridae larvae were the dominant organisms collected. Preferred depths existed for each group of organisms. Chaoboridae and Chironomidae exhibited distinct seasonal variations in numbers, with the population decreasing throughout the summer. Chaoboridae were the most and Chironomidae the least numerous of the 3 groups.

Susceptibility Of The Sod Webworm Pediasia Trisecta To Biological Control Agents, E. A. Heinrichs, C. J. Southards Jan 1970

Susceptibility Of The Sod Webworm Pediasia Trisecta To Biological Control Agents, E. A. Heinrichs, C. J. Southards

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Homeowners in Tennessee have observed complete destruction of their lawns by the sod webworm a few months after applying an insecticide to control sod webworms or white grubs. The reason for this increase rather than a decrease in the webworm population is not perfectly understood. We believe, however, that the natural enemies of the webworm may be reduced to such low population levels that they exert very little control on the webworm. Thus, once the natural enemies are destroyed in a lawn, it may require several months or even years for them to increase to a population level necessary to …

Chiropteran Systematics, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways Jan 1970

Chiropteran Systematics, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Provides an overview of the field of chiropteran systematics in a way that will introduce the non-chiropterologist to the subject. By way of example, we have alluded to several aspects of taxonomic research at different levels in the hierarchy. Recourse to the publications cited at the appropriate places in the text will amplify our remarks and provide a solid background in the current work of the discipline.

Basically, taxonomic characters are where the taxonomist finds them; some, but not all, will prove useful also in elucidating relationships and evolutionary descent of taxa. Much remains to be done in these areas, …

System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti Jan 1970

System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The purpose here is to suggest a method which will permit understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of contemporary representatives of the phylum Nematoda without fossils. It is not my intent to again offer a phylogeny for the Nematoda. To say that no real benefit or knowledge of phylogeny or evolution is possible without fossils is succumbing to apathy. One cannot deny or ignore that all systems, morphological, biological and chemical manifested in modern forms developed by evolutionary sequence. It is true that with a complete fossil record the rates of evolution and developmental pressures could be accurately evaluated. However, in …

Conclusions

1. In the mountainous regions of the Kopet-Dag, where cases of visceral leishmaniasis have been observed, 19 species of sandflies were found.

2. The physico-geographic conditions of the mountain valleys and their individual parts may substantially affect the species content of the sandflies and the abundance of a given species.

3. On the north slopes of the Kopet-Dag a flight of 4 generations was observed at settled places; P. papatasi, S. arpaklensis, and S. grecovi were most numerous in human habitations, while in the rodent colonies one sees.P. caucasicus, P. mongolensis, and P. chinensis …

Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield Jan 1970

Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The subject of mite transmission of plant viruses has been reviewed several times by Slykhuis (122, 124,126,128). A considerable number of papers on this subject have been published since Slykhuis's last review; several constitute significant additions to the knowledge of the relationships between mites and the plant viruses they transmit.

Except, perhaps, for the apparent case of transmission of potato virus Y by Tetranychus telarius (107), the only proven mite vectors of plant viruses are certain members of the family Eriophyidae. In 1927, Amos et al. (2) reported a positive correlation between the infestation of black currants with the black …

Blind River Dolphin: First Side-Swimming Cetacean, Earl S. Herald, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Fredric L. Frye, Elkan J. Morris, William Evans, Alan Scott

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The blind river dolphin (Platanista gangetica), first written about by Pliny the Elder in A.D. 72, was found (10 November 1968) to be the first known side-swimming cetacean. The rudimentary eye lacks the lens, but anatomical evidence suggests that the eye may serve as a light sensor. The underwater sound emissions of this species, although similar to those of the Amazon River dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), appear to be produced constantly.

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination. Iv. Transfer Ribonucleic Acid From Germinated And Ungerminated Spores, James L. Van Etten, R. Kent Koski, Mahmoud El-Olemy Dec 1969

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination. Iv. Transfer Ribonucleic Acid From Germinated And Ungerminated Spores, James L. Van Etten, R. Kent Koski, Mahmoud El-Olemy

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) fractions isolated from germinated and ungerminated spores of Botryodiplodia theobromae and Rhizopus stolonifer had acceptor activity for all 20 amino acids commonly found in protein, when tested with an enzyme fraction from germinated spores. Accordingly, it is unlikely that the absence of tRNA for a particular amino acid limits protein synthesis in fungal spores.

Hatching Of Sod Webworm Eggs In Relation To Low Temperatures, E. A. Heinrichs, Ellis L. Matheny

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Eggs of Chrysoteuchia topiaria (Zeller), Crambus pascuellus floridus (Zeller), and Pediasia trisecta (Walker) were exposed to temperatures of 25, 15, 10, 4, and –10°C. Only those of P. trisecta hatched after exposure to 4°C for 30 days, while none hatched after exposure to –10°C. Eggs of none of the species hatched after exposure to 4 and 10°C for 60 days. Pre-exposure and post-exposure conditioning had no significant effect on percent hatch of P. trisecta eggs, while length of exposure period had a significant effect.

Lipid Content And Seasonal Activity Of Odontopus Calceatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Adults, E. A. Heinrichs Dec 1969

Lipid Content And Seasonal Activity Of Odontopus Calceatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Adults, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Overwintering Odontopus calceatus (Say) adults were first observed feeding on April 10. Weekly collections during the activity period indicated that new-generation adults began emerging June 4. By July 23 they had entered the forest litter for hibernation. Lipid content decreased throughout the hibernation period as the weevils utilized 77% of their total lipid content during this time. The most rapid decrease during hibernation occurred from February to March, just prior to mating and oviposition in the spring. No increase in lipid content occurred during the activity period in spring and summer. A great increase in lipid content did occur within …

Sweetclover Weevil Feeding Stimulants: Isolation And Identification Of Glucose, Fructose, And Sucrose, W. R. Akeson, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Dec 1969

Sweetclover Weevil Feeding Stimulants: Isolation And Identification Of Glucose, Fructose, And Sucrose, W. R. Akeson, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The water-soluble fraction of Melilotus leaves previously referred to as Stimulant A was further fractionated by preparative paper chromatography into three factors, each having a stimulatory effect on sweetclover weevil feeding. The three factors, designated Stimulant A1, A2, and A3, were identified as sucrose, glucose, and fructose, respectively, by co-chromatography with known sugars on cellulose-coated thin-layer plates. Silver nitrate, anisidine phthalate, and anthrone were employed as detection agents. The isolated compounds and corresponding reagent grade sugars were identical in chromatographic and chemical behavior, as well as in feeding stimulant activity. Sucrose stimulated the greatest …

Parasitic Organisms In The Blood Of Arvicoline Rodents In Alaska, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A Grahamella-like organism (Schizomycetes: Bartonellaceae) was found in erythrocytes of laboratory-reared northern voles, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with a saline suspension of ground fleas, Megabothris abantis (Roths.), from wild northern voles captured at Lower Ugashik Lake, Alaska Peninsula. A live-trapped northern vole from the same locality harbored trypanosomes referable to T. microti (Mastigasida: Trypanosomatidae). Two morphologically similar but biologically different strains of piroplasms (Piroplasmasida: Theileriidae) of uncertain generic status were isolated from northern voles of Ugashik Lake origin and from northern red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, from the vicinity of Anchorage, Alaska. In the natural …

Particle Tracks In Emulsion, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich Oct 1969

Particle Tracks In Emulsion, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich

Robert Katz Publications

A new theory of track formation in emulsion accounts for the tracks of charged particles on the basis of a theory developed earlier for the response of biological molecules and NaI(T1) to energetic heavy ions. The probability that an emulsion grain will remain undeveloped when exposed to δ rays depositing a mean energy E is assumed to be e-E/E0 where E0 is the dose at which l/e (37%) of the emulsion grains remain undeveloped, as in the one-or-more-hit cumulative Poisson distribution. The parameter E0 incorporates variations in emulsion properties and processing conditions. Calculation of …

Effects Of Metepa On Gametogenesis And Embryogenesis In The Large Milkweed Bug Oncopeltus Fasciatus (Dallas), Donald E. Lawson, Harold J. Ball

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Considerable research is currently being directed toward discovering means of controlling insects other than by applying insecticides. There are several promising concepts of control which minimize the use of insecticides and one of these is the use of sterilizing techniques. Some emphasis is currently being placed on the development of chemosterilant techniques. Many of the studies have been concerned with the screening of potentially active chemicals, whereas other research has dealt with the efficacy of field application. The more basic work has been accomplished through the participation of several disciplines. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects …

Nationwide Residues Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wings Of Mallards And Black Ducks, Robert G. Heath

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Nationwide monitoring of organochlorine pesticides in wings of more than 24,000 mallards and black ducks bagged during the 1965 and 1966 hunting seasons showed DDE to be the predominant residue, followed in order by DDT, DDD, dieldrin, and heptachlor epoxide. Residues were generally highest in wings from the Atlantic and Pacific Flyways, and lowest in the Central Flyway. DDE was reported for every State and was notably high in wings from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, California, and Utah. Dieldrin residues were prevalent in wings from Arkansas, Texas, Utah, California, and several States in the …

Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster Sep 1969

Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Ten bacteriophages for Xanthomonas phaseoli were characterized. On the basis of adsorption rates, latent period and burst size, plaque morphology, host range, efficiency of plating, ultrastructure, sensitivity to osmotic shock, streptomycin sensitivity, temperature effects on plating efficiency, and serology, the phages were separated into at least three groups. Some of the phages were infectious for Pseudomonas phaseolicola (four strains) and P. syringae (one strain) in a narrow temperature range. The taxonomic and ecological significance of this finding is discussed.

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The inferior ovary of Boottia cordata, Ottelia alismoides, and their hybrid is appendicular in nature, the carpels are congenitally only slightly connate, and they are unsealed. All floral organs except the sepals originate from common primordia in the female and bisexual flowers. A flat residual floral apex is present. There is a vestigial superior ovary of three ontogeneticallv fused carpels in the male flower of Boottia cordata. The hybrid is intermediate in many characteristics and has partially fertile stamens and staminodia. The sequence of development in all flowers is acropetal. These plants appear to be related to …

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck Aug 1969

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

New York Holstein herds (1,152) including 75,875 cows were classified by housing system (stanchions, free stalls, and other combinations). Records initiated in these herds from 1964 to 1968 were used to determine the degree to which housing type might affect variance of milk production records in herds with 45 or more cows.

The within-herd variances by lactation for each housing system in each year-season were examined by Bartlett's test for nonhomogeneity among housing systems. Records in the stanchion systems were less variable than those in free-stall systems. This difference was not large enough to require adjustment for type of housing …
