Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph Jan 1969

Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The mechanism of translocation has been discussed since the latter part of the 19th Century, when DeVries, in 1885, proposed protoplasmic streaming as the mechanism. Since that time O. F. Curtis, beginning about 1920, and more recently Thaine (1961) and Canny and Phillips (1963) have become interested in this approach to the problem. In the meantime Munch, in 1930, proposed a pressure flow mechanism based on a turgor pressure gradient in the phloem between metabolite supplying and metabolite consuming areas. These two mechanisms, and others, are fully discussed in Swanson (1959), so the present paper will deal with a compilation …

Metabolic Sinks, Harry Beevers Jan 1969

Metabolic Sinks, Harry Beevers

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The continued growth of higher green plants well supplied with water and inorganic nutrients depends primarily on (i) the accomplishment of photosynthesis in the leaves and (ii) the transport of organic compounds from the leaves to heterotrophic cells which constitute metabolic sinks.

Managerial Analysis Of Doctoral Candidates And Professors: Research Attitudes And Interpersonal Relations, Fred Luthans, Richard M. Hodgetts Jan 1969

Managerial Analysis Of Doctoral Candidates And Professors: Research Attitudes And Interpersonal Relations, Fred Luthans, Richard M. Hodgetts

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The authors feel that managerial analysis can contribute to the better understanding of many problems facing the modern university. This study, in analyzing the staffing problems of colleges of business administration, utilizes the research attitudes and interpersonal relations between doctoral candidates and their professors. The body of management knowledge is usually associated with business organizations. However, many other types of organizations in modern society have utilized management knowledge to solve their problems. Government organizations, hospitals, and the military draw from and add to the general body of management knowledge.

Light Interception And Radiative Exchange In Crop Stands, John Monteith Jan 1969

Light Interception And Radiative Exchange In Crop Stands, John Monteith

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Crops grow and use water because they intercept radiation from the sun, the .sky, and the atmosphere. Diurnal changes of solar radiation dictate the diurnal course of photosynthesis and transpiration, and the vertical gradient of radiant flux in a canopy is a measure of the absorption of energy by foliage at different heights. Without exaggeration, the distribution of radiation within a plant community is the most important single element of microclimate.
Early ecological studies of radiation climate were mainly descriptive and were limited in scope by rather primitive instrumentation. A new quantitative approach to the subject was initiated by Monsi …

Physiological Significance Of Internal Water Relations To Crop Yield, R. O. Slatyer Jan 1969

Physiological Significance Of Internal Water Relations To Crop Yield, R. O. Slatyer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The overall effects of water deficits on crop yield are known to everybody. Moderate water deficiencies can result in stunting, distorted development, and much reduced crop yields, and prolonged drought can cause complete crop failure.
Despite these visible symptoms of deficiency, a clear and unambiguous statement as to the effect of deficits on crop yield is difficult to make, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, despite the importance of the phenomenon to agriculture in most of the food producing countries of the world, relatively little attention has been devoted to its water deficits. Secondly, and in part this is a …

This volume is the outgrowth of an international symposium held at Lincoln, Nebraska, January 20-24, 1969. It was sponsored by the University of Nebraska in cooperation with the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America with partial financing by the Rockefeller Foundation and the International Biological Program.
The symposium planning committee was broadly based and was able to bring specialists from many parts of the world to the conference. Thus, the technical presentations were drawn from outstanding authorities backed up by a clear perspective of social needs. This was a happy combination …

Germ Plasm Manipulations Of The Future, George Sprague Jan 1969

Germ Plasm Manipulations Of The Future, George Sprague

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The topic, Germ Plasm Manipulations of the Future, could cover the entire field of genetics. This would be a very difficult assignment and, were I willing to attempt it, one that might not best serve the specific purpose of this symposium. I shall take a much more restrictive view and consider only certain phases of genetics which, in my opinion, will become of increasing importance in crop improvement.
In the period since 1900 genetics has achieved close and reciprocally productive relations with several fields of science. A partial listing of these would include genetics and cytology to yield cytogenetics; genetics …

Environmental Manipulation For Higher Yields, Paul Waggoner Jan 1969

Environmental Manipulation For Higher Yields, Paul Waggoner

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

My role in this chapter on environmental manipulations is making a prediction that can be used until experiments render the final verdict.
In chapters preceding mine, an array of physical and physiological phenomena for affecting yield has been laid before the grower of plants. Predicting whether environmental manipulation will increase yield requires that all of these phenomena be considered for foreign lands are littered with the bleaching bones of immigrant varieties and practices that were ambushed by an unsuspected environmental difference.
Interaction is the Scylla of biologic prediction. Formerly we predicted by drawing a curve or writing a formula relating …

Cultural Manipulation For Higher Yields, William Duncan Jan 1969

Cultural Manipulation For Higher Yields, William Duncan

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

By cultural manipulation we will mean, in a broad sense, everything a farmer might do to increase crop yields per hectare, after he decides what to plant and buys the seed. With this restriction we leave out the agricultural economist and the plant breeder. When we limit our interest to yields per hectare we introduce an element of area. This will include the crop canopy above the surface and the root system below it. Cultural manipulation also includes what the farmer might do to make best use of water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and essential mineral nutrients whether they occur naturally …

Development, Differentiation, And Yield, John Heslop-Harrison Jan 1969

Development, Differentiation, And Yield, John Heslop-Harrison

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The task of reviewing some of the ways development and differentiation may act as determinants of economic yield would be much simpler had knowledge advanced to a point where the basic principles concerned in the control of these processes in eukaryotic organisms were clear. Unfortunately, this stage has not yet been reached. There is no shortage of schemes and hypotheses to set beside a mountain of observational and experimental data, but the unifying thread which might allow us to pick out the significant and reject the irrelevant in any particular context is still lacking. What is incontestable is that development …

Plant Morphology And Stand Geometry In Relation To Nitrogen, Robert F. Chandler Jr. Jan 1969

Plant Morphology And Stand Geometry In Relation To Nitrogen, Robert F. Chandler Jr.

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

During the past decade, the importance of plant morphology and spacing in relation to nitrogen responsiveness in terms of crop yield has been increasingly recognized, particularly in the case of the cereal grains.
It is the purpose of this paper to present examples of experimental results obtained by rice research workers which support certain significant principles. Although this treatise will be confined to the rice plant (Oryza sativa L.),as Wittwer (1968) points out, the principles elucidated are applicable to many other crops, and particularly to the small grains, such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), oats (Avena sativa …

The Identification Of Cis-Ii, I2-Methylene-2-Hydroxyoctadecanoic Acid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, H. W. Knoche, J. M. Shively Jan 1969

The Identification Of Cis-Ii, I2-Methylene-2-Hydroxyoctadecanoic Acid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, H. W. Knoche, J. M. Shively

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

A polar fatty acid has been observed as a component of an

ornithine-containing lipid of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. A

comparison of thin layer chromatographic mobilities of reference

compounds to those of the natural acid and its derivatives

suggested that the acid was a 2-hydroxy fatty acid.

The presence of a cyclopropane function in the acid was

indicated by l4e-Iabeling experiments and infrared spectroscopy.

Mass spectrometry of the methyl ester and the acetylated

methyl ester of the natural acid provided a molecular

weight for the acid. Equivalent chain lengths were determined

for the natural acid, the acid obtained by oxidative

decarboxylation of …

Systems Analysis Of Natural Resources And Crop Production, Marion Clawson Jan 1969

Systems Analysis Of Natural Resources And Crop Production, Marion Clawson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Human history is a seamless web; every event has its antecedents, its contemporaries, and its consequences. Each event arises out of the past, each is associated with other events at the time, and each leads to new events, in an endless chain. Indeed, there is difficulty in isolating any single event; when did it begin, what are its boundaries, when did it end? These are some of the problems of the social scientist generally, and of the historian in particular.
Nature is equally a seamless web. Every natural process or event has its cause or antecedent, each takes place within …

A Population Analysis Of Juniperus In The Missouri River Basin: Taxonomic Interrelationships Between Juniperus Scopulorum Sarg. And J. Virginiana L. In Missouri River Basin, David F. Van Haverbeke

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Juniper has been used since early pioneer days in the protective tree plantings established on the windswept Great Plains. More recently juniper has been used as a basic component of the shelter belt plantings which, by the thousands, dot the prairies of the Great Plains from Texas to Canada. Research to improve the quality of Plains tree planting materials, including Juniperus) is proposed or is now in progress.

In the fall of 1965, 72 native stands of Juniperus were sampled throughout the Missouri River Basin-an area encompassing most of the Central and Northern Great Plains. The purpose was to determine …

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard Dec 1968

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The recent comprehensive review of Maccoa Duck Oxyura maccoa biology by Clark (1964) has provlded the first detailed summary of the species' reproductive behaviour patterns and other aspects of breeding in this little-studied stiff-tail. It has been evident that the evolutionary relationships of the Maccoa Duck to the other southern hemisphere stiff-tails and the northern species of Oxyura are still uncertain at best, as evidenced by the varied taxonomic treatment that the Maccoa has received from Delacour and Mayr (1945), who regarded it as a race of O. australis, from Boetticher (1952), who consldered it as a race of O. …

Energy Deposition By Electron Beams And Δ Rays, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz Dec 1968

Energy Deposition By Electron Beams And Δ Rays, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The product of two empirical relations, for the practical range and the transmission probability of normally incident electrons through plane sheets of matter, may be differentiated to yield a simple formulation of the energy deposition by electron beams, in agreement with more complex formulations and with experimental data. When combined with the δ-ray distribution formula, these results provide a theory of the spatial distribution of ionization energy about the path of a rapidly moving ion, which is basic to theories of radiation damage and detection.

Effects Of Main Stem Impoundments And Channelization Upon The Limnology Of The Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph N. Langemeier, Thomas R. Russell, Arthur Witt Jr. Oct 1968

Effects Of Main Stem Impoundments And Channelization Upon The Limnology Of The Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph N. Langemeier, Thomas R. Russell, Arthur Witt Jr.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Rigid control has been imposed upon the Missouri River by impounding over one-half of the upper 1,500 miles and by channeling most of the remaining river within permanent, narrow banks. These controls have caused environmental changes in the lower Missouri River, as shown by this study, of adjacent unchannelized and channelized sections of river below the main stem impoundments. Impoundments have regulated flow by evening maximum and minimum discharges and improved downstream water quality by decreasing turbidity and indirectly raising the dissolved oxygen. In addition the impoundments have contributed a limnetic cladoceran, Leptodora kindti, to the drift and have …

Revisions Of Two Subgenera Of Andrena: Micrandrena Ashmead And Derandrena, New Subgenus (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), David O. Ribble

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

This paper is a monographic revision of the bee subgenera Micrandrena Ashmead and Derandrena, new subgenus, of the genus Andrena in North America. Both subgenera occur in the New World and Micrandrena also occurs in the Old World. Twenty-eight species are treated, of which twelve are new: Andrena (Micrandrena) annectens, ishii, labergei, lamelliterga, lepidii, micheneri, Andrena (Derandrena) arctostaphylae, californiensis, hermosa, murietae, penutiani, viridissima. Thirteen names are placed in synonymy: Andrena semotula Cockerell with candidiformis Viereck and Cockerell; subtilicornis Viereck, nitidicornis Cockerell, chlorogaster nesiotes Timberlake, chlorogaster gavilanica Timberlake, radialis Timberlake, catalinica Cockerell with chlorogaster Viereck; vegana Viereck and Cockerell with illinoiensis …

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination Ii. Aminoacyl-Soluble Ribonucleic Acid Synthetase Activities During Germination Of Botryodiplodia Theobromae Spores, James L. Van Etten, Robert Brambl Oct 1968

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination Ii. Aminoacyl-Soluble Ribonucleic Acid Synthetase Activities During Germination Of Botryodiplodia Theobromae Spores, James L. Van Etten, Robert Brambl

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The specific activities of 13 aminoacyl-soluble ribonucleic acid (sRNA) synthetases were measured at various time intervals during the germination of Botryodiplodia theobromae conidiospores. The enzyme activities were low or absent in ungerminated spores, and they increased rapidly as germination proceeded. When extracts of the ungerminated spores were prepared with mortar and pestle, very little or no enzyme activity was detected. When the extracts were prepared with a mechanical homogenizer, however, they exhibited some enzyme activity, although less than did the extracts from germinated spores. Enzyme activities from germinated spores were approximately the same, regardless of the method of preparation. The …

Zoonotic Diseases In The Changing Arctic, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Compatible with the biotic uniformity of northern regions, the occurrence of certain organisms which cause zoonotic diseases is general throughout the Arctic. In the past, most frequently affected by such diseases have been aboriginal peoples whose way of life involved encroachment upon naturally occurring parasite-host assemblages. Now, as changes take place in socioeconomic conditions in the Arctic, the importance of zoonotic diseases as a cause of morbidity may lessen among such peoples, but on the other hand, more nonaborigines may be affected. Although my remarks relate mainly to Alaska, again the biotic uniformity of the North seems to have its …

Basic Statement On Migratory Bird Treaty, E. M. Bosak

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

My portion of the program is the basic statement on the Migratory Bird Treaty Act regulations. Basically, laws are designed to control the actions of human beings. J. Edgar Hoover recently stated, "Man cannot live in our complex society today without a system of laws. The social system is doomed unless the laws are enforced, and the enforcement officer is ineffective unless his efforts to maintain the peace and protect life and property are supported by the government and the people." Therefore, it behooves each one of us to be aware of those laws that affect us in our everyday …

Costs Of New Materials: The Manufacturer's Dilemma, Dan Macdougall

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I thought it was possible that some of you might not be acquainted with some of the frustrations which are involved in jousting with the bureaucracy in Washington. So I thought I would review that situation very briefly for you, particularly in regard to the compound Queletox. We will confess that we had some real qualms about accepting this material for control as a bird toxicant initially. And the reasons we were concerned about this were because the compound was being used in other areas as an agricultural chemical. It was registered for mosquito control, and it was being used …
