Water quality degradation is a major global concern and a significant threat to human health. In Egypt, extensive agricultural runoff enriched with fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides endangers the aquatic ecosystems. Accordingly, a reliable water quality monitoring and assessment program is crucial for formulating a management strategy aimed at water resource protection. Indeed, water quality assessment implies a challenge in identifying sampling locations, frequencies and monitored parameters. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a pervasive condition that affects women all over the world. It presents with a wide variety of symptoms like menstrual irregularity, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Although generally considered to be solely a reproductive disorder, PCOS impacts metabolic, psychological, and cardiovascular health, and increases the risk for those diagnosed for other complications. Although PCOS is relatively common, it remains greatly misunderstood, which makes diagnosing the condition even more complex. Risk factors taken into consideration include genetics, environment, and lifestyle. The pathophysiology of PCOS focuses on dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, insulin resistance, and inflammation. There …

The purpose of this review is to address the misconceptions surrounding Hormone Therapy (HT) in menopause largely surrounding the findings from Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). The review explores the history of HT, the risks and benefits, along with current guidelines for HT and non-hormonal options. A comprehensive search was conducted using electronic databases focusing on the effect of HT on breast cancer, cardiovascular health, bone health, and quality of life. Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental health disorder with severe and wide-ranging consequences. Early detection of prodromal symptoms (subtle warning signs preceding full-blown psychosis) can significantly improve patient outcomes. Primary care settings, where early intervention is typically most feasible, lack standardized tools to screen for prodromal symptoms of schizophrenia, however. This review examines existing psychosis screening questionnaires to determine their suitability for primary care use. The purpose of this review was to investigate the use of testosterone supplementation in the middle-aged male with a focus on the pathophysiology of testosterone throughout the lifespan, current supplementation options and their adverse effects, and the overall benefit of supplementing to enhance quality of life. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted identifying studies that assessed clinical outcomes, pathophysiology, supplementation options, adverse effects and benefits of treatments. The findings suggested that testosterone levels naturally decline with age with most men developing symptoms of hypogonadism around age 60. Introduction

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is commonly used to treat prostate cancer. Leuprolide acetate (LA) is a common ADT, manufactured as an intramuscular injection, Lupron® (LA-IM), and a subcutaneous injection, Eligard® (LA-SC) with the goal of testosterone < 50 ng/dL. We investigated for differences in testosterone suppression between the two formulations in patients with prostate cancer.

Methods

Clinical data was abstracted from our medical records system for patients with prostate cancer who started leuprolide acetate between January 2016 through March 2022 with a subsequent testosterone value checked. Primary endpoint was the proportion of subjects with testosterone levels < 50mg/dL, with secondary endpoints including the proportion of subject achieving testosterone levels < 20ng/dL and median testosterone levels.

Results

Purpose: The exponential growth of ophthalmology research can be challenging to keep up with for trainees, researchers and clinicians and little has been done to identify core ophthalmology journals. We thus applied Bradford’s law to characterize core journals in ophthalmology.

Design: Cross-sectional bibliometric analysis

Methods: Two sets of top 10 National Library of Medicine indexed ophthalmology journals based on h-index and impact factor (IF) were combined to create top 14 journals used for analysis. In this study, a nanocomposite was prepared using a solution casting technique. The polymer electrolyte blend was formed by combining 0.6 mg of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and 0.4 mg of polystyrene (PS). Subsequently, silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles were incorporated into the polymer matrix at varying and precisely measured concentrations. The composite was thoroughly mixed to ensure homogeneity, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectral analysis confirmed the absence of chemical interactions between the SiC nanoparticles and the polymer components, indicating a physically stable mixture. The above can be reflected in the synthesized compound with new properties, such as semiconductors or semi-insulators. …

This article explores Freud’s original engagement with animal symbols, characters, and stories in his case studies “Little Hans,” “The Rat Man,” and “The Wolf Man.” Employing insights from animal studies, the article examines Freud’s views on the human-animal continuum as well as the phenomena of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, via which human characteristics are affixed to animals and animal characteristics to humans. Also examined is the symbolism surrounding the animals appearing in the fairy tales referenced by Freud’s patients, including “Little Red Riding Hood.” We end by considering the contributions that Freud can make to the expanding field of animal studies.

The Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is a transmembrane, multi-ligand cell surface receptor highly expressed in pulmonary tissue, where it plays a critical role in mediating inflammatory responses. Under chronic toxicant exposure, often associated with cigarette, e-cigarette, and diesel particulate, RAGE transitions from a protective to a deleterious state, contributing to pathological processes. Muscular power is a critical determinant of performance in athletic competitions and thus identifying methods to maximize this attribute is imperative. Grunting (GR) may be an effective way to increase power during high-velocity, explosive movements. The purpose of the current investigation was to determine the effects of GR on muscular power output. Twenty-four subjects were recruited from a local martial arts academy. Each subject had a minimum of 2 years of martial arts experience. Patients with recurrent platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC) have poor clinical outcomes, owing mainly to the presence of therapy-resistant cancer stem cells (CSCs). The NCT03949283 randomized clinical trial enrolled patients with recurrent PROC to receive ChemoID-guided chemotherapy or the best physician-choice regimen selected from the same list of thirteen mono or combination chemotherapies. The primary outcome was objective response rate (ORR) assessed on CT scans using the RECIST 1.1 criteria at 6 months follow-up. PAS domains are ubiquitous sensory modules that transduce environmental signals into cellular responses through tandem PAS folds and PAS-associated C-terminal (PAC) motifs. While this conserved architecture underpins their regulatory roles, here we uncover a structural divergence in the metazoan PAS domain-regulated kinase (PASK). By integrating evolutionary-scale domain mapping with deep learning-based structural models, we identified two PAS domains in PASK, namely PAS-B and PAS-C, in addition to the previously known PAS-A domain. Unlike canonical PAS domains, the PAS fold and PAC motif in the PAS-C domain are spatially segregated by an unstructured linker, yet a functional PAS module is assembled …
