1966 Beef Cattle Progress Report Of Research Activities, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Many beef cattle breeders in the United States and other countries are following the progress of the selection experiment at the Fort Robinson Beef Cattle Research Station, Crawford, Nebraska. Three lines of Hereford cattle from the same genetic foundation are under selection. Line 21 is selected for 200-day weight. Line 22 is selected for yearling weight. Line 23 is selected for an index combining yearling weight and a score for muscling and fat thickness.

Each line is operated as a closed herd so it will be possible to determine how much improvement in economic traits can be made by selecting …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

An experiment was designed using 30 Yorkshire pigs to study the influence of slaughter weight and feed restriction on carcass cut-out data and to relate these physical measurements to the chemically-determined proximate components. As slaughter weight increased from 79 to 102 kg., the percent of all lean cuts decreased significantly, while that of fat cuts and back-fat thickness increased significantly. Absolute amounts of both fat and lean cuts increased with slaughter weight. Feed restriction significantly increased most of the lean parameters studied and reduced the fat measurements. It increased percent of head and reduced the percent of offal (gastrointestinal tract …

Chromogen-Ratio Method For Determining Digestibility Of Plants By Grasshoppers, E. A. Heinrichs, K. P. Pruess Jan 1966

Chromogen-Ratio Method For Determining Digestibility Of Plants By Grasshoppers, E. A. Heinrichs, K. P. Pruess

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The concentration of plant pigments in excreta vs. food provided a measure of digestibility of most plants by grasshoppers. Digestibility values obtained with the chromogen-ratio method and consumption-excretion ratios were highly correlated (r = 0.789**). Greatly disparate results were obtained in 4 cases. The chromogen method, when applicable, gave better duplicability and eliminated many of the errors and much labor associated with consumption-excretion ratios.

All Holstein herds of over 20 cows which had automated data processed dairy herd improvement association (DHIA) records from Cornell laboratory for two consecutive years from 1960 to 1964 were used to determine production, feeding, and management changes. The average number of herds for the four 2-yr comparisons was 2,688, 60% in New York and the remainder in neighboring states. Results in the two locations agreed. The yearly changes and standard deviations of changes per cow for the New York herds were milk production, + 157 ± 400 kg; grain feeding, + 88 ± 241 kg; succulent forage, + 0.13 …

Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams Apr 1965

Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

METHODOLOGY for residue analysis has advanced rapidly during the current review period, from November 1962 through October 1964. Notable progress has been made in the development and refinement of methods of analysis by which any or all of a large number of pesticide residue chemicals can be detected and measured in one general operation. This is of particular significance because great interest has developed-outside the scientific community as well as within - in the possible presence of pesticide chemicals in all parts of our environment, including man himself. Only by the use of improved methodology will it be possible to …

Biochemical Changes During The Growth Of Fungi: Ii. Ergosterol And Fatty Acids In Penicillium Atrovenetum, David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Changes in the lipid constituents of Penicillium atrovenetum were studied during the growth and development of this fungus. The stages in development, as measured by the dry weight, were divided into four phases: lag, log, stationary, and death. The total fatty acids on a dry-weight basis increased from a minimum in the spores to a maximum near the end of the log phase of growth. The major fatty acids were palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic. Myristic, pentadecanoic, palmitoleic, heptadecanoic, linolenic, arachidic, and heptadecenoic acids, together with two unidentified components, were also present in the fatty acid fraction. Compared to ungerminated …

Effect Of Ferrous Fumarate In The Lactation Diet On Sow Milk Iron, Pig Hemoglobin And Weight Gain, T. L. Veum, J. T. Gallo, L. Dale Van Vleck, J. K. Loosli Jan 1965

Effect Of Ferrous Fumarate In The Lactation Diet On Sow Milk Iron, Pig Hemoglobin And Weight Gain, T. L. Veum, J. T. Gallo, L. Dale Van Vleck, J. K. Loosli

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two experiments involving 22 litters were conducted to study the effects of adding ferrous fumarate to the lactation diet on iron level of sow’s milk and on weight gains and hemoglobin levels of suckling pigs. Ferrous fumarate was not effective in increasing iron content of milk, when added to the lactation diet at a level of 1984 mg. of iron per kg. The increase in hemoglobin level observed at 24 days in Experiment I and at 21 days in Experiment II, in litters nursing sows fed ferrous fumarate, was due to the pigs’ obtaining a source of iron from the …

Response Of Sheep And Swine To Treatments For Control Of Ovulation, P. J. Dziuk Jan 1965

Response Of Sheep And Swine To Treatments For Control Of Ovulation, P. J. Dziuk

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Control of the estrous cycle is essential to precise research in gamete and zygote physiology and could be useful in animal husbandry. The conception rate in sheep during the breeding season following treatments to control ovulation has varied from about normal (Dauzier, 4; Robinson, 20; Evans et al., 9; Lamond and Bindon, 17; Brunner et al., 3; Hinds et al., 15), to distressingly low levels in other cases (Braden et al., 2; Davies, 5; Lamond, 16). Treatments during the anestrous season have given a variable response but usually only 30 to 50 percent of ewes lamb (Gordon, 13; 14).

The Role Of Light In The Regulation Of Cyclical Estrous Activity In Sheep, M. T. Clegg, H. H. Cole, W. F. Ganong Jan 1965

The Role Of Light In The Regulation Of Cyclical Estrous Activity In Sheep, M. T. Clegg, H. H. Cole, W. F. Ganong

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The widespread existence of biological clocks among animals is documented by a considerable body of evidence. Recently Farner (13) has reviewed this subject covering information on a large variety of animals. In this paper an attempt will be made to restrict most of the discussion to sheep. Experimental data from other species, however, will be cited when it can be usefully related to an understanding of the mechanisms controlling seasonal breeding activity in this species. As far as present knowledge is concerned, the factors regulating or at least monitoring annual physiologic cycles appear to depend greatly upon the influence of …

Evaluation Of Methods For Controlling The Estrous Cycle, William Hansel Jan 1965

Evaluation Of Methods For Controlling The Estrous Cycle, William Hansel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Truly effective estrous cycle synchronization techniques are of great potential value to commercial producers of beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and swine. Many commercial beef cattlemen recognize the merits of using outstanding sires through artificial insemination (AI) to produce greater numbers of faster gaining cattle having the most desirable carcass characteristics. The relatively high heritability of feedlot gains makes this idea particularly attractive. Nevertheless, progress in attaining this goal has been rather slow, mainly because of the practical problems involved in breeding range cattle artificially and the low conception rates frequently obtained. Methods for cycle regulation compatible with the most …

Density-Gradient Centrifugation: Non-Ideal Sedimentation And The Interaction Of Major And Minor Components, Myron K. Brakke, J. M. Daly Jan 1965

Density-Gradient Centrifugation: Non-Ideal Sedimentation And The Interaction Of Major And Minor Components, Myron K. Brakke, J. M. Daly

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A small amount of southern bean mosaic virus was contained in a narrow zone after density-gradient centrifugation, but in a much wider zone after centrifugation with a large amount of a second virus. Zone-spreading of a major component by non-ideal sedimentation in density-gradient centrifugation can cause zone spreading of a minor component that the major component overlaps.
