Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The interrelation between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland has been firmly established. It is not the intention of this report to review the literature on this extensive subject. Such reviews are available in "Advances in Neuroendocrinology" (Nalbandov, 2), and since the time of this publication many papers on this subject have appeared in current journals. For the purposes of the present discussion a few fundamental facts will be restated, but the major part of my presentation will deal with my own views of the research areas which should be of special interest to animal scientists concerned with phenomena …
Hormonal Control Of Reproductive Activity In The Ewe, J. F. Wagner
Hormonal Control Of Reproductive Activity In The Ewe, J. F. Wagner
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
There are many advantages which result from synchronizing the estrous period in a ewe flock. In situations where the ewes are not hand bred to the ram, the synchronization of estrus makes the application of artificial insemination (AI) techniques more efficient. Detection of estrus usually is more reliable in a synchronized flock. Only 3 to 4 days are needed to detect estrus in 90 percent of a synchronized flock, whereas 16 to 18 days are normally required. This allows the AI technician to plan the number of breedings and have semen available. When hormones are given in the feed, an …

Phytotoxic Substances From Soil Microorganisms And Crop Residues, T.M. Mccalla, F.A. Haskins
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The role of organic matter in the growth of plants has been a subject of much investigation and controversy since the sixteenth century. During the early era, decomposition of plant residues and green and animal manures provided a primary source of minerals for plant growth. In addition, beneficial effects on soil structure and water-holding capacity were attribute to the presence of organic matter. With the development of agricultural chemistry culminating in the work of Liebig in the nineteenth century, it was discovered that plants could make satisfactory growth in the absence of added organic matter if suitable kinds and amounts …

Exposure To Parathion Effect On General Population And Asthmatics, Robert S. Ganelin, Cipriano Cueto Jr., G. Allen Mail
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. The results suggest that the effect of this chemical on the general …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A program of research in Alaska was initiated by the United States Public Health Service in 1948, with the establishment of a field station in temporary facilities located at Anchorage. This station, officially designated the Arctic Health Research Center in May 1950, was founded largely as the result of surveys of health conditions in Alaska conducted during 1946 and 1947 by two committees representing the American Medical Association. The reports of these committees led Congress to pass a special appropriation bill to support the investigation of health problems in Alaska.
Six research sections were set up within the first year. …

Efficiency of sugar beet farming can be improved by feeding beet top silage to livestock.
In two recent trials at the Scotts Bluff Experiment Station lambs fed unwilted beet top silage as the only roughage gained significantly faster than lambs fed corn silage.
Amounts of concentrates were comparable (Nebraska Experiment Station Quarterly, Fall, 1962).
This experiment compared the feeding value of a complete mixture of unwilted beet tops and concentrate added at the time of ensiling, with beet top silage and concentrate handled separately. A conventional corn silage and concentrate ration was used as a control.
Results showed that a …
Effect Of Amino Acid Supplementation Of Rations Containing Meat And Bone Scraps On Rate Of Gain, Feed Conversion And Digestibility Of Certain Ration Components For Growing-Finishing Swine, W. G. Luce, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Previous work at this station (Peo and Hudman, 1962) has shown that meat and bone scraps, when fed at levels from 5 to 10% of the total ration, significantly depress rate of gain of growing-finishing swine. Similar results have been reported by Bloss et al. (1953), Terrill et al. (1954), Meade and Teter (1957), and Becker and Jensen (1961).

Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis
Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Much of the research on hyperparasitism has been of a descriptive nature, based primarily on studies with dual cultures in synthetic media. The main contributions from these investigations concern the host range of the parasite, the mode of penetration and infection, and the morphological changes of the host and the parasite resulting from parasitism.
More recent studies on hyperparasitism emphasize the effect of environmental factors, especially nutrition, on the susceptibility of the host. Research on the physiology of hyperparasitism has been limited. Nevertheless, this important aspect of the problem should continue to receive increased attention as hyperparasitism is extremely amenable …
Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy
Influence Of Surface Active Agents On Some Lactic Streptococci, R. B. Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Fatty acids and other surface active agents were used to clarify the relationship of surface activity to the inhibition of lactic streptococci. There was complete inhibition of lactic streptococci in media where surface activity exceeded a critical level. The effectiveness of inhibition by fatty acids, nonionic surface active agents, anionic surface active agents, decyl alcohol, growth medium, and temperature variation was directly related to the surface activity. The surface active agents created an unfavorable environment at most concentrations, rather than acting as a specific inhibitory substance to which the organisms were capable of adapting and thereafter resuming normal growth. The …

Shipping fever is a respiratory disease "complex" of cattle. The disease causes extensive economic losses from death, loss of physical condition, inefficient feed utilization and treatment expense. The annual loss from this disease in the United States has been estimated to be $25,000,000.
In many respects shipping fever is similar to respiratory diseases of humans. It may occur in any season of the year, but is most common in the fall and early winter. Although any age animal may be infected recently weaned calves and feeder cattle which have just been moved from the range to feedlot are most susceptible.
