Synthetic And Complex Media For The Rapid Detection Of Fluorescence Of Phytopathogenic Pseudomonads: Effect Of The Carbon Source, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Fluorescence is of diagnostic value for differentiating among species of aerobic pseudomonads (R. Y. Stanier, N. J. Palleroni, and M. Doudoroff, J. Gen. Microbiol. 43:159, 1966). The standard medium for detecting fluorescence is Medium B (E. 0. King, M. K. Ward, and D. E. Raney, J. Lab. Clin. Med. 44:301, 1954), which supports fluorescent pigment production of most pseudomonads tested (0. Jessen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other green fluorescent pseudomonads, A taxonomic study, Munksgaard, Copenhagen, 1965; R. Y. Stanier et al., J. Gen. Microbiol. 43:159, 1966). Minerals (J. V. Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The effects of feeding diets containing no fat, 3% hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO) or graded levels (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 or 3%) of safflower oil (SO) on serum cholesterol, lipids and protein level; on total heart and liver cholesterol and lipid level and on growth rate and skin condition were studied in weanling Yorkshire and Yorkshire x Hampshire pigs. Pigs fed the fat-free diet for 21 weeks developed severe skin lesions not observed in pigs fed HCO diets. Highly significant elevation of serum, liver and heart lipid and liver cholesterol, and a highly significant depression of total serum protein were observed …
A Consideration Of Infraspecific Categories In The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801 (Cestoda: Taeniidae), Robert L. Rausch
A Consideration Of Infraspecific Categories In The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801 (Cestoda: Taeniidae), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) and E. multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, have been considered polytypic species, nine and three subspecies, respectively, having been recognized mainly on typological grounds. However, limits of taxonomically significant morphological and physiological variation have not been defined, nor do we know the degree to which such variation is influenced by species of host. With the probable exception of E. g. canadensis Cameron, 1960, the recognized subspecies of E. granulosus occur sympatrically with the nominate subspecies, E. g. granulosus, of European origin. Because there are no well-defined predator-prey relationships which would ensure their ecological isolation, seven of these …

Taxonomic Status Of The Brush Mouse, Peromyscus Boylii Cansensis Long, 1961, Jerry R. Choate, Carleton J. Phillips, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
In the course of a study of mammals from southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, the authors have collected specimens of the brush mouse, Peromyscus boylii cansensis Long, from its type locality and also from a place about 16 miles southwest of the type locality. The results of studies of these specimens, and of the holotype and paratypes of the subspecies, are presented and discussed herein.

Carbohydrate And Lipid Metabolism During Germination Of Uredospores Of Puccinia Graminis Tritici, J. M. Daly, H. W. Knoche, M. V. Wiese
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Uredospores of Puccinia gramintis (Pers.) tritici (Eriks. and Henn.) were uniformly labeled with 14C by permitting the host (Triticuml aestivum L.) to carry out photosynthesis in 14CO2 during the process of spore production by the obligate parasite. The use of 14C labeled spores provided advantages in a study of the utilization of endogenous substrates at frequent intervals with small amounts of spores under conditions conducive to germination.

Plant Vs. Animal Protein As A Source Of Supplemental Protein For The Gilt, Dwane R. Zimmerman, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Plant Vs. Animal Protein As A Source Of Supplemental Protein For The Gilt, Dwane R. Zimmerman, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Protein of animal origin has frequently been suggested to have greater nutritional value for swine reproduction than protein of plant origin. Moustgaard (1952) reported that gilts fed a diet in which the supplemental protein was of animal origin (soured separated milk) reached puberty earlier and had a greater ovulation rate and greater embryo survival and litter size at 26 to 29 days of gestation than gilts fed a diet in which the supplemental animal protein was replaced with protein of plant origin. Most of the advantage of the animal protein diet was eliminated when the all-plant diet was supplemented with …

Oral feeding of stilbestrol or implanting with stilbestrol or Synovex has resulted in increased weight gain and efficiency of gain for cattle fed finishing rations.
Combining oral feeding or stilbestrol with implanting did not give increased performance above that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone in two tests. Implanting cattle fed oral stilbestrol at the start of the feeding program with either stilbestrol or Synovex gave a similar pattern of performance to that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone.

Effect Of Plane Of Nutrition, Sex And Bodyweight On The Chemical Composition Of Yorkshire Pigs, G. M. Babatunde, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. H. Kroening, J. T. Reid
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
An experiment was carried out involving the full- vs. limited-feeding of 9 pairs of gilts and 6 of barrows from a population of closely related Yorkshire pigs from approximately 45 kg. live weight up to each of three predetermined slaughter weight groups (79, 90 and 102 kg.). The objective was to determine the effects of level of feed intake, sex and weight on the chemical composition of the empty body, edible carcass and inedible parts (offal) and the fatty acid composition of the mid-back fat. As the slaughter weight increased, the percentages of empty body, carcass and offal protein and …

Availability Of Niacin In Corn And Milo For Swine, W. G. Luce, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Niacin has been recognized for several years as a dietary essential for swine. Its presence in feedstuffs is well known, but the biological availability of niacin in certain cereal grains commonly fed to swine has not been clearly established. Research has been reported indicating the niacin of white corn and wheat is largely unavailable to the pig (Kodieek et al., 1956; Kodicek et al., 1959 and Luce et al., 1966). Several workers have also obtained evidence that the niacin of corn is in a bound form and largely unavailable to the rat. (Laguna and Carpenter, 1951; Pearson …

Mertz et al. (1949) demonstrated that lysine is essential in the nutrition of swine. Since then considerable research has been conducted to determine the level of lysine needed to promote optimum growth and feed conversion in swine. Recent investigations (Crum et al., 1964; Wallace et al., 1964; Jensen et al., 1965) have been designed to measure the physical and chemical changes in the animal body which may accompany observed differences in performance due to varying lysine and protein levels.

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.
Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

Voluntary Intake Of Forage By Holstein Cows As Influenced By Lactation, Gestation, Body Weight, And Frequency Of Feeding, W. L. Johnston, G. W. Trimberger, M. J. Wright, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Relationships involving forage appetite and frequency of feeding forage were studied with high-producing Holstein cows, including 60 complete cow lactations and 49 records of the dry period. Significant correlation (r= .59) was obtained between forage dry matter intake and 4% FCM yield in the lactation period. Patterns of forage DM intake were affected strongly by different stages of the lactation and dry periods. Infrequent periods of hot summer weather decreased intake and milk yield by about 10%. Individual cow differences, however, were the most important source of variation in forage DM intake. Age, body weight changes, body condition, and stage …
