Claude Levi-Strauss: The Man And His Works, Susan M. Voss Jan 1977

Claude Levi-Strauss: The Man And His Works, Susan M. Voss

Nebraska Anthropologist

"Claude Levi-Strauss, Professor of Social Anthropology at the College de France, is, by common consent, the most distinguished exponent of this particular academic trade to be found anywhere outside the English speaking world... " (Leach 1970: 7)

With this in mind, I am still wondering how I came to be embroiled in an attempt not only to understand the multifaceted theorizing of Levi-Strauss myself, but to interpret even a portion of this wide inventory to my colleagues. There is much (the majority, perhaps) of Claude Levi-Strauss which eludes me yet. To quote Edmund Leach again, "The outstanding characteristic of his …

Inseticidas Sistémicos E Endrin Aplicados No Controle De Elasmopalpus Lignosellus, E Seus Efeitos Sobre A Soja, Elvis A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Hormdne-Inducible Casein Messenger Rna In A Serum-Free Organ Culture Of Whole Mammary Gland, P. M. Terry, M. R. Banerjee, R. M. Lui

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The whole second thoracic mammary gland of estradiol-17β + progesterone primed 3- to 4-week-old BALB/c female mice was induced to pregnancy-like lobulo-alveolar morphogenesis after 6-day cultivation in a serum-free culture medium containing a "growth promoting" hormone mixture, insulin + prolactin + growth hormone (somatotropin) + estradiol + progesterone. No radioimmunologically detectable casein was present in these glands. Subsequent cultivation for another 6 days in a "lactogenic" medium with the hormones insulin + prolactin + cortisol produced abundant milk-like secretory material in the alveolar lumen. RNA of the mammary gland after estradiol + progesterone priming or cultivation in the "growth-promoting" medium …

A 'Hedge' Against Cultural Dominance (A Review Of Counter Culture And Cultural Hegemony: Some Notes On The Youth Rebellion Of The 1960'S By A. Norman Klein), Patrick F. Mccarty Jan 1977

A 'Hedge' Against Cultural Dominance (A Review Of Counter Culture And Cultural Hegemony: Some Notes On The Youth Rebellion Of The 1960'S By A. Norman Klein), Patrick F. Mccarty

Nebraska Anthropologist

During the 1960's, student unrest became an issue of international proportions. College-age protesters participated in various forms of dissent (peaceful and violent) for various reasons. Because of their break with conventional beliefs and customs, the youth of the 60's were identified as a subculture or "counter culture". This counter culture was established to protest critical issues ignored by the dominant culture. In his article on counter culture and cultural hegemony, A. Norman Klein addresses the nature of cultural dominance in America. He argues that a study of the youth movement of the 60's reveals the true character of hegemonic culture.

Origins Of Tolerance: Findings From A Replication Of Stouffer's Communism, Conformity, And Civil Liberties, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter Dec 1976

Origins Of Tolerance: Findings From A Replication Of Stouffer's Communism, Conformity, And Civil Liberties, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This report presents findings from a nationwide replication of Stouffer's classic study of attitudes toward civil liberties. Central to Stouffer's interpretation of the origins of tolerance is his idea that exposure to social and cultural diversity encourages an appreciation of the importance of civil liberties for democracy. Trends in the 1950s suggested that Americans would increasingly be exposed to diversity with the result that the population would become more tolerant in the future. These propositions were examined using education, city size, region, exposure to mass media news, gender, and occupation as indices of exposure to diversity. With the exceptions of …

"Origins Of Tolerance": Reply To Crockett, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Professor Crockett has described portions of our article as "conceptually barren" and the findings are said to represent "serious distortions" which, if accepted, will lead to "serious misunderstandings." Coming from a respected colleague, these strong words cannot be taken lightly. Nevertheless, after carefully examining his criticisms, we feel they are misplaced.

Environmental And Health Studies Of Kentucky Blackbird Roosts, Burt L. Monroe Jr., Lois S. Cronholm Nov 1976

Environmental And Health Studies Of Kentucky Blackbird Roosts, Burt L. Monroe Jr., Lois S. Cronholm

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

At the present time we are under contract from the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission to study three aspects of Kentucky starling-blackbird roost problems: (1) a study of birds killed this coming winter through PA-14 treatments, to obtain more accurate data on species composition, sex ratios, kill success and food items; (2) a compilation of breeding and wintering data on Kentucky populations through analysis of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service summer bird counts and banding returns; and (3) a study of spore dispersal of various fungal species, most notably Histoplasma capsulatum, from roost sites. The winter sampling is yet to be …

Winter Bird Roosts In Kentucky: An Introduction Of The Problem, Richard N. Smith Nov 1976

Winter Bird Roosts In Kentucky: An Introduction Of The Problem, Richard N. Smith

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

When the first Bowling Green Bird Control seminar was held in the early sixties, emphasis on the blackbird problem was centered in Ohio. I believe John Beck, who is here, was one of the first peoples in the State to become involved with this situation. The problem (and it was a problem related to crop damage, primarily corn) had been building for a number of years, but it wasn't until September of 1965 that it really received national recognition. During that month, at the demand of local farmers at a meeting in Vickery, Ohio, Federal, State and local officials were …

Studies On Diet Overlap Among Icterids, Crows, And Starlings, M. I. Dyer, N. J. Kakalec Nov 1976

Studies On Diet Overlap Among Icterids, Crows, And Starlings, M. I. Dyer, N. J. Kakalec

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Some of the problems that have been publicized for the past two to three years about blackbirds and Starlings in the southeastern United States are concerned with what these birds eat and the degree to which these granivores compete on their wintering grounds. The assumption by agriculturists has been that these birds cause severe depredations. Futhermore it is presumed by some that food supplies are unlimited and that these birds are simply living off the “fat of the land”; others consider that food is limited and that the birds are “pressured” into direct competition with man's food or food destined …

Pod Faculty Development Conference, October 17-19, 1976 -- Airlie House, Karen Hardiman, Glenn R. Erickson, Bette Lasere Erickson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Conference Materials

The idea for this booklet came from the Lilly Endowment Incorporated's Faculty Development Conference in Indianapolis earlier this year. Before that conference, we each received a booklet which included the program schedule, a list of participants and single paragraph bios, and a one-page description of each program represented at the conference. I was fascinated by the diversity of "faculty development" programs, and by the varied backgrounds and interests of their staffs. We decided, therefore, to put together a similar booklet for participants in this POD Conference as a part of our "Information Fair." This booklet includes all of the program …

Supralinearity Of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters, Leif Larsson, Robert Katz Aug 1976

Supralinearity Of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters, Leif Larsson, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The supralinear response of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) after irradiation with gamma- or beta-rays can be decomposed by use of the cumulative Poisson distribution into a sum of 1-or-more and 2-or-more hit components, suggesting the coexistence of both types of trap structures. Following the response of other 1-hit detectors, and of biological cells to energetic heavy ions, we expect and find that the supralinear response tends to disappear with alpha particle, and with neutron irradiation, and that the supralinear, or 2-hit, component tends to be more responsive to high LET (Linear Energy Transfer) radiations. Since the response of biological cells to …

Bacteria In The Air Of Housed Swine Units, L.F. Elliot, T.M. Mccalla, J.A. Deshazer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two housed, swine-growing-finishing units were studied for numbers of total bacteria, fecal coliforms, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella in the air. At 30.5 and 122 cm from the floor, total colony-forming particles, as tested, averaged 3.4 x 10) and 1.3 x 105/m3 of air, respectively; whereas fecal coliform counts averaged 24 x 103 and 1.9 x 103/m3 of air, respectively. Only 41% of the organisms growing on Staphylococcus 110 medium tested as Staphylococcus. Of 458 Staphylococcus isolates, 5 were coagulase-positive. No Salmonella were detected in the air of the units tested.

Keynote Address—The Role Of Education In Vertebrate Pest Control, Gustav A. Swanson Mar 1976

Keynote Address—The Role Of Education In Vertebrate Pest Control, Gustav A. Swanson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 7th (1976)

Lack of adequate information is emphasized as a major problem in attaining effective control of damage by vertebrate pests, and it is stressed that the problem is widespread in all elements of the public, including those directly involved, like producers and government officials, as well as those only indirectly involved, like the average citizen. A number of specific examples are cited to illustrate the problems of uninformed or inadequately informed publics.

Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko, G. L. Bullock Jan 1976

Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Columnaris disease is a chronic to acute infection that affects salmonids and many species of warmwater fishes. The first description of the disease was given by Davis (1922) who named the disease and bacterium from the columnar arrangement of cells as seen in wet mounts. The bacterium causing columnaris disease was first isolated by Ordal and Rucker (1944). They identified the organism as belonging to the group known as slime bacteria or myxobacteria; because it produced fruiting bodies and microcysts, they named it Chondrococcus columnaris. Garnjobst (1945), who was unable to find fruiting bodies, renamed it Cytophaga columnaris. …

Limnology Of The Great Lakes Of Nicaragua, Gerald A. Cole Jan 1976

Limnology Of The Great Lakes Of Nicaragua, Gerald A. Cole

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

For more than a century, the two largest bodies of water in Nicaragua, Lake Nicaragua and its smaller companion, Managua, have engaged naturalists from several disciplines. Perhaps their appeal has been as curiosities because of the occurrence of fish with marine affinities in the larger lake, especially a dangerous shark. The charm has been in Nicaragua or Cocibolca, rather than Managua, properly called Xolotlán. Even though the latter is saltier, it has no elasmobranchs or tarpons.
The lakes, and specifically the larger, cover the greatest expanse of any body of water between Lake Titicaca, Bolivia-Peru, and the Laurentian …

The Status Of The Lake Nicaragua Shark: An Updated Appraisal, Thomas B. Thorson Jan 1976

The Status Of The Lake Nicaragua Shark: An Updated Appraisal, Thomas B. Thorson

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Since 1966, an extensive tagging program has demonstrated beyond any further doubt (Thorson, 1971) that the sharks move from the Caribbean Sea to Lake Nicaragua and vice versa. At the time of this writing, of 1450 post-juvenile sharks tagged at the various river mouths on the Caribbean Coast, ten have been recovered in Lake Nicaragua; and of 146 tagged at San Carlos, where the river leaves the lake, 28 have been recovered along the Caribbean Coast, most of them at the various outlets of the Rio San Juan. Except for these basic facts, the results of the tagging program have …

Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings

This afternoon I want to tell you about the results of a major study we have been doing as a part of the Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program. The Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program is an interdisciplinary project directed by Dr. John W. Farquhar, Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and I am co-director. This paper was really co-authored by fifteen people as part of an interdisciplinary team. With a group of different people like this, we had to spend a significant amount of time trying to teach each other our respective professional languages. Initially, communication within our group was …

Whose Behavior In What Health Marketplace?, Leon S. Robertson

Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings

A number of behavioral scientists and health educators have been engaged for some time in attempts to explain and/or influence human behavior regarding health and illness. Behavior directed toward preserving health is called health behavior.1 Behavior subsequent to the perception of symptoms and directed toward diagnosis and treatment is called illness behavior.

It has been suggested that techniques used to market products and services can be used to help individuals fulfill their needs in both prevention and amelioration of illness as well as in the alleviation of other social problems. In this paper I shall review some principles that have …
