Appendectomy In Pediatrics : The Value Of Peritoneal Fluid Smear And Its Bacteriological Profile, Manal Mohammed Kadhim
Appendectomy In Pediatrics : The Value Of Peritoneal Fluid Smear And Its Bacteriological Profile, Manal Mohammed Kadhim
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of abdominal pain requiring surgery in children. In most instances the infecting organisms are normal inhabitants of the lumen of appendix . Surgery allows easy microbiological sampling. Aspiration of fluid or pus in a syringe is preferred. Swabs are less suitable and only to be used when sampling with a syringe is not feasible. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the isolated bacteria and particularly of the anaerobes can be important to adjust therapy in case of the presence of multi resistant bacteria. The aim of the study was to determine the bacteriological profile of …

Thirty four cases of Impetigo Contagious collected at period1/11/2008 to 1/6 /2009 with Female: Male ratio of (18:16) with ages (1- 30) The results was found that 26 patients (76.4 %) revealed staphylococcus aureus in laboratory examination . four patients (11.76 %) have shown streptococcus pyogenes , while the remaining (11.76 %) were found to have combined bacteria. This work revealed the interesting similar results of causative agent : staphylococcus aureus is the main pathogen , almost consistent with western literatures.

Background: Otitis Media (OM) is an inflammation of the middle ear drum and the inner ear, including a duct known as the eustachian tube. Otitis media is very common in children. Over 60 percent of the cases of otitis media are caused by bacteria. Urinary tract infection(UTI) refer to the presence of microbial pathogens within the urinary tract. A urinary tract infection is a condition where one or more structures in the urinary tract becomes infected after bacteria overcome its strong natural defenses. In spite of these defenses, urinary tract infections are the most common of all infections and can …

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Caffeic acid against the viability of Leishmania tropica promastigotes in vitro. The result showed that Caffeic acid had a fatal effect on the viability of Leishmania tropica promastigotes with the use of different concentrations leading to a gradual decreasing of living promastigotes number with the increase of Caffeic acid concentration. The mean parasiticidal effect of Caffeic acid was (24×104, 30×104, 38×104, 44×104, 53×104) promastigote /ml at concentrations (10, 15, 20, 25, 30) mg/ml respectively after three days of incubation. It can be concluded that Caffeic acid posses a cidal effect …

Competitive Inhibition Relationship Between Erythropoietin And Interferon-Gamma In Renal Failure Anemia., Ali M. Jasim, Baqur A. Sultan, Kareem T. Mashkour
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
This is an in vitro laboratory study. It was done in order to prove the competitive inhibition between interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and erythropoietin (EPO) in chronic renal failure (CRF) by fixing an inhibition elicited by EPO on IFN-gamma expression by mononuclear cells. These cells were already separated from fresh anticoaggulated blood specimens from nine CRF-patients and nine healthy persons. Then, were co incubated separately with mitogen, phytohemaggluttinin with and without EPO under standard incubation conditions. Thereafter, IFN-gamma level was measured by ELISA. Results have shown that EPO significantly inhibits IFNgamma expression by mononuclear cells in healthy persons, p value < 0.05, while this inhibition is not significant in CRF-patients.

Audiological Changes In Patients With Otitis Media With Effusion (Ome), Kassim R. Dekhil
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common problem especially in children and if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately may lead to serious complications. Our study was conducted to assess the audiological changes associated with OME regarding the type, intensity and each frequency affected. The study involved 50 patients and the age ranged from 4-15 years old. The average of air conduction thresholds in the submitted cases (conductive deafness) were 31dBHL in the range between (0-50) dBHL. 500Hz is the most frequency affected and the least affected one is 2000Hz. In bone conduction thresholds (sensorineural hearing loss), we found …

In vitro culture of erythrocytic stages of malarial parasite can prove helpful in understanding the biology of the parasite to locate new targets for drug designing and vaccine development. In the present study an attempt has been made to assess certain in vitro conditions which can provide the amiable environment for continuous growth of rodent malaria parasite, Plasmodium berghei. A total of eight different conditions were studied out of which G type proved to be the mosteffective in maintaining long-term in vitro culture of P. berghei. G type contained medium RPMI-1640 supplemented with HEPES, sodium bicarbonate and glucose, normal mouse …

objective: To determine whether CT images on the basis of their morphologic features and enhancement patterns. could help accurately distinguish benign renal masses from malignant .patients and Methods : Between April 2006 and February 2009, 80 consecutive patients (age range, 1–65 years; 50 male, 30 female) suspected to have renal mass by physical examination ,underwent ultrasound examination to evaluate the mass ,whether cystic or solid. Only patients with solid renal mass documented with US were included in the study then preoperative renal CT. All CT studies evaluated the mass about the pattern and degree of enhancement, lesion contour, presence of …

This study aimed to show the effect of sweeteners Sodium cyclamate and aspartame on culture media and its role in the enhancement of the growth of some clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter. Results showed that Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were unable to grow in low concentration of aspartame (0.9, 1.8 mg/ml) but they showed well growth at relatively high concentrations of this compound. Results also showed that Enterobacter spp was the best growers (109 cells/ml) at high concentration of aspartame (9.0 mg/ml) P> 0.05 . Sodium cyclamate enhanced the growth of E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae ,and Enterobacter spp. …

Background: Neonatal mortality rate is one of the main health problems which affected by prenatal status and perinatal conditions. LBW is one of the main causes of neonatal and infantile mortality. Approximately every ten seconds, an infant from a developing country dies from a disease or infection that can be attributed to low birth weight, so this study was done to evaluate the risk factors of LBW in neonate.Method: A descriptive cross sectional study was done on 1023 neonates, born in Babylon Maternity and Children Teaching Hospital from September 2007 to April 2008 .Neonatal data such as birth weight, gender, …

Several studies have suggested a possible link between human cytomegalovirus infection and various malignancies particularly colon adenocarcinoma. The present study investigates whether HCMV participates in human colon tumorigenesis by the detection of HCMV proteins within epithelial cells of colorectal carcinoma using Immunohistochemistry (IHC) technique.formalin – fixed, paraffin – embedded specimens of adenocarcinoma, and normal tissues were obtained from the margins of the excision as a control, those specimens were tested by IHC to detect the presence of HCMV proteins using two types of mouse monoclonal antibodies as mixture of monoclonal antibodies to an early and immediate early proteins (pp43 & pp76, …
