The Influence Of Military Service On Political And Social Attitudes: A Study Of Socialization In The German Bundeswehr, Ekkehard Lippert, Paul Schneider, Ralf Zoll, Robert K. Shirer (Translated By)

German Language and Literature Papers

In recent years, one can observe a more intense interest on the part of the academic community and in the general public of the Federal Republic of Germany in questions concerning the Bundeswehr and about problems of the relationship between the military and society. One of the major reasons for the new scrutiny has been the drastic increase in the number of conscientious objectors to military service, occurring at the end of the 1960s. However, questions of the extensive defense- political aspects of the problem were less at the center of this interest than questions of educational and socialization processes …

Permanent Light Microscopy Slides Of Eimeria Nieschulzi Oocysts, Alan A. Marchiondo, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The methods described here allow for the preparation of light microscopy slides of coccidian oocysts and thus, provide a durable sample and record for research and teaching. These methods used only one species, Eimeria nieschulzi; however, it is likely that use of other coccidian oocysts would produce similar results.

Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1978

Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Mycobacteria are widely distributed in nature. They are abundant in the soil, on the surface of plants, on the skin of vertebrates, in human food (e.g., milk and butter), and in animal feeds. Most mycobacteria are saprophytic, but some species are highly pathogenic and cause diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy in humans, and similar diseases in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.

Mycobacteria that cause diseases of fishes differ considerably from those that cause diseases in humans and other mammals. Therefore, to avoid association between tuberculosis in mammals and mycobacterial infections in fishes, it is better to call the …

An Examination Of The Male Sex Role Model In Prime Time Television Commercials, Renee Meyers

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work

The purpose of this thesis is to examine male role models in prime time television commercials. The plan for the study is as follows: Chapter Two will review research on the importance of television to our society and its influence on the socialization process through which children and adults learn appropriate role behavior and attitudes. Then a review of the research which examines the characteristics of the female role model on television will illustrate the stereotypic female models television is now portraying. Chapter Three will discuss the methods and procedures necessary for examination of the male sex role model in …

American Drama And Ritual: Nebraska Football, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael Stein

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Football is a major sport in the United States because of its dramatic enactment of social values of violence, bureaucracy, sexism, and commercialism. The spectators of this game are particularly enthralled in the state of Nebraska. Here, a state with a large geographical area and a small, predominanty rural population, the ~' fans have elevated Nebraska football to a significant ritual and source for identification. As avid supporters they dress in the team colors, red and white; participate in pre- and postgame celebrations; travel great distances; and emotionally express their loyalty and dedication to "Big Red."

Herpetomonas Megaseliae And Crithidia Harmosa: Growth On Blood-Agar Plates, Amy Doran Kepel, John J. Janovy Jr. Oct 1977

Herpetomonas Megaseliae And Crithidia Harmosa: Growth On Blood-Agar Plates, Amy Doran Kepel, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

A technique for culturing two species of trypanosomatid flagellates on blood-agar plates is described. Herpetomonas megaseliae and Crithidia harmosa were grown as discrete clone colonies on plates prepared in sterile petri dishes with a medium derived from that of Tobie et al. (1950, J. Parasitol. 36: 48-54). Plates were inoculated with 0.01 ml flagellate suspension and the inoculum was spread evenly over the surface of the agar with a sterile glass spreader. Plates were incubated in a high humidity chamber at 25 C and colonies of both species, easily visible to the unaided eye, appeared within 1 week. There was …

Nematicidal Injection: Targeted Control Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes Of Trees And Vines, D. R. Viglierchio, Armand R. Maggenti, R. V. Schmitt, G. A. Paxman

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Pressurized injection of nematicidal solutions was effective for control of nematodes within trees and vines. Significant (P = 0.01) control of Pratylenchus vulnus on grape was attained with four nonfumigants (carbofuran, oxamyl, phenamiphos, and sulfocarb) and one fumigant nematicide (DBCP). Pratylenchus penetrans was controlled (P = 0.05 and 0.1) in apples and walnuts with sulfocarb and oxamyl. This species also was controlled in apples with carbofuran and phenamiphos. The advantages of pressure injection over traditional methods of nematicide applications are discussed.

Sex And Violence: Can Research Have It Both Ways?, Richard A. Dienstbier Jun 1977

Sex And Violence: Can Research Have It Both Ways?, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

During the last decade, the literature on media exposure has been dominated by a single theoretical system of personality functioning—the social learning model. The model emphasizes that the disinhibition of already-learned behavior, the learning of new behaviors, and the establishment of patterns of personality result from observing the behavior of other people (models) and from vicarious reinforcement upon viewing those models successfully engaging in rewarded sequences of behavior.

It is a tribute to the degree to which social learning oriented psychologists have successfully influenced intellectual and governmental thinking that the model is seldom questioned as providing the appropriate basis for …

Exceptions To The Rule: A Review Of The Criminal Personality, Volume I: A Profile For Change, Richard A. Dienstbier Mar 1977

Exceptions To The Rule: A Review Of The Criminal Personality, Volume I: A Profile For Change, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The major purpose of the first volume of an intended three-volume series by Samuel Yochelson and Stanton E. Samenow (1976) is to provide evidence that understanding the thought processes of chronic criminals provides the major key to understanding criminal behavior. Volumes II and III will deal, respectively, with the techniques of therapy developed for the analysis and correction of criminal thought patterns, and with the special problems of therapy with criminals who are chronic drug users. This review of Volume I is divided into three parts, the first being a review of the content and major points of the book, …

Can Physics Develop Reasoning?, Robert Fuller, Robert Karplus, Anton E. Lawson Feb 1977

Can Physics Develop Reasoning?, Robert Fuller, Robert Karplus, Anton E. Lawson

Robert G. Fuller Publications

The life of every physicist is punctuated by events that lead him to discover that the way physicists see natural phenomena is different from the way non-physicists see them. Certain patterns of reasoning appear to be more common among physicists than in other groups. These include:
• focusing on the important variables (such as the force that accelerates the apple, rather than the lump it makes on your head);
• propositional logic ("if heat were a liquid it would occupy space and a cannon barrel could only contain a limited amount of heat, but this is contrary to my observations, …

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Until that now famous series of Russian grain sales took place in 1972 agricultural policy in the United States had begun to lose its sex appeal! It had its challenges in the drought and depression years of the '30s, and again during World War II, but in both those cases the concern was whether we could produce enough for our needs. In the earlier of those decades, we had an additional preoccupation with the economic survival of our farming communities. Farm families had to.be strong in every sense of the word to live through the '30s.

G77-355 A Guide For The Control Of Flies In Nebraska Feedlots And Dairies (Revised March 1990), John B. Campbell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Flies, especially stable and house flies, can create serious and costly problems for feedlot and dairy operations. This publication describes several methods for control.

Several species of flies may be in confined livestock facilities during summer. The stable and house fly are the most serious pests. Blow flies also may be present if molasses is in the diet. Horn flies--small blood-feeding flies--may be present in early spring. These flies overwinter as pupae in or near manure pats in range or pasture. If cattle are not present in the grassland when horn flies emerge, they will migrate to confinement cattle. Normally, …

Trial And Pretrial Publicity In English Criminal Justice, Colin Wakefield Jan 1977

Trial And Pretrial Publicity In English Criminal Justice, Colin Wakefield

Nebraska Law Review

This article aims to provide a statement of the law relating to trial and pretrial publicity in England. The discussion is limited to criminal cases because it is in this area that there has been the greatest controversy in the United States—and Nebraska in particular. English courts are not bound by entrenched constitutional principles, and it may appear to the American reader that when the English courts balance conflicting interests of a free press and a fair trial, they are rather arbitrary in their preference for the latter. The rights of the individual defendant are afforded the greatest protection—a premise …

G77-337 Propagating House Plants, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger Jan 1977

G77-337 Propagating House Plants, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Propagating house plants in the home is an inexpensive and enjoyable hobby. The home is not always the ideal place, but most house plants can be propagated there satisfactorily with a minimum of special equipment.

Methods of Propagation

House plants may be propagated asexually, in which all new plants will be identical, in most cases, to the parent plant, or sexually, where the new plants will not necessarily be identical to the parent plants. Plants are propagated sexually by seeds. Cuttings, air-layering, division and runners are asexual methods of propagation.
