Synergistic Effect Of Lawsonia Inermis And Peganum Harmala Aqueous Extracts On In Vitro Growth Of Leishmania Tropica Promastigotes Comparison To Sodium Stibogluconate, Niran Al-Ogaili
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Promastigotes of genus Leishmania are transmitted by Phlebotomus sandflies bites. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in southern parts of Iraq. Lawsonia inermis (henna) leaves contain several active compounds that have antiprotozoal activity, as well as, Peganum harmala possess several alkaloids with antiprotozoal properties. In this study, MTT assay was used to assess the antileishmanial activity of L. inermis and P. harmala aqueous extracts in comparison to pentavalent antimonial drug( sodium stibogluconate) on in vitro promastigotes of Leishmania tropica. L. inermis and P. harmala extracts were prepared in concentrations of (5%, 2.5% and 1.25%) and (10%, 5% and 2.5%) respectively. Also, …

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Background: knowledge; attitude and practice backgrounds affect much the outcome of diabetes. Non-compliance imposes a considerable health care and financial burden on the health system. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice background of type 2 diabetes Iraqi patients toward their disease by using the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) questionnaire. Results: Mean knowledge score was 6.48+2.66, attitude score was 5.28+2.07 and practice score was 4.62+1.49. males showed significantly higher KAP scores than females (P<0.001). Patients with higher significant education had the highest knowlegde score in comparison with those with secondary eduction; the difference was statistically highly significant (P<0.001). Patients living in urban areas showed significantly higher mean score than those living in rural areas (P<0.001). Patients who had jobs experienced a significantly higher knowledge score than those without job (P<0.001). Smoker patients had significantly higher KAP scores than non-smoker patients (P<0.001). Conclusion: The study concluded that low/ moderate knowledge, attitude and practice of diabetes among the diabetic patients, which need more effort and role to be played by clinical pharmacist to fulfill this gap.

The genus Entamoeba contains many species, three of which are identical (Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar and Entamoeba moshkovskii ) reside in the human intestinal lumen. Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amebiasis and mortality worldwide in humans. Although recent studies highlight the recovery of E. dispar andE. moshkovskii from patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. The cultivation of three identical Entamoeba species was done successfully in Lock’s-egg medium , a high number of trophozoite were found in culture .these three identical Entamoeba species did not differentiation by using microscope .but the devolution of scientific they could differentiation by using PCR technique …

Extraction And Identification Of A Flavonoid Compound From Oak Plant(Quercus Infectoria Oliv.) And Study Of Its Antibacterial Activity, In Vitro, Rajaa A. Hussein
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
A flavonoid compound was isolated from oak plant (Quercus infectoria oliv.) (Fagaceae) stem barks using ethanol alcohol as a solvent, the isolated compound was identified using conventional characterization methods, such as Thin Layer Chromatography(TLC),Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), as well as, some biochemical assays using color reagents. Antibacterial activity of extracted flavonoid was carried out against two types of reference strains bacteria: which are Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923) and Gram negative ( Escherichia coli ATCC 25923), the results shows that the extract of oak barks has good a antibacterial growth activity in which gram positive …

New Technique Use To Rapid Isolation Pneumococcus Bacteria From Both Pneumococcus Meningitis And Pneumococcus Pneumonia Infections In Iraq, Mohammed Kadum Al-Araji
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
Pneumococcal pneumonia is more common in the very young and the very old ages. Pneumococci are the most common cause of meningitis in adults. Especially at risk are alcoholics and people with chronic otitis, sinusitis, mastoiditis. We compared the relative efficacy of three methods for the isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae microorganism in both pneumococcal meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia in both lower respiratory secretion and cerebrospinal fluid depending on results from total speciemens collected (Cerebrospinal fluid and respiratory secretion). These 100 speciemens were subcultured on different three types of blood agar plates we found that Streptococcus pneumonia was isolated at a …

Objective: this study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of aspirin on the progression of atherosclerosis. Materials and methods: A total of 28 local domestic rabbits were assigned to four groups: Group I (normal control), Group II (atherogenic control), Group III (vehicle control),Group IV (aspirin 10 mg\kg daily). Blood samples were collected at the end of experiment (8 weeks) for measurement of serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, plasma high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and plasma reduced glutathione (GSH). Immunohistochemical analysis (VCAM-1, MCP-1, and TNF-α) and histopathologic assessment of aortic atherosclerotic changes were also performed. Results: …

Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) is a clinical syndrome characterized by rapid onset of weakness, affecting the muscles then progressing to maximum severity within several days to weeks and sometimes may lead to death. The objective of this study was the isolation and detection of Non-Polio Enteroviruses, The ECHO virus from three hundred stool specimens obtained from children aged less than 15 years old showing symptoms of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) from different Iraqi provinces and characterization the different serotypes of these viruses using both tissue culture (using RD cells) and neutralization-assay methods. This was done according to protocols applied by …

The study was designed for isolation and identification of Pseudomonas spp. from neonatal nosocomial infections, from Three Teaching Hospitals of Maternity and Pediatrics in Al-Mosul city. The total collected samples were 288,which included clinical(134samples collected from preterm and full-term neonates who less one year of age ) and environmental samples(154)from anuary 2011 till end July 2011, in order to evaluate the classical laboratory diagnostic procedures for diagnosis of Pseudomonas isolates and compared them with molecular technique on the basis Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Pseudomonas spp. has been isolated and identified by using cultural method, biochemical tests and Mini API 20NE …

It has been observed that in a dimicrobic mucosal urinary tract infection . The specific antibody titre of E. coli was higher than that of P. aeruginosa. The interpretation was based on antigenic competition . Hence a case of UTI with combined gram negative infection were chosen and diagnosed as E. coli and P. aeruginosa (Identified by classical tests and API 20E system) . Balanced and unbalanced heat killed E. coli and P. aeruginosa antigens in different combination proportions were made and used for specific immune priming of rabbits. Monotypic heat killed antigens were made and used for priming rabbits …
